Persona 1 Analysis (Part 1) - Ultimate Persona Compendium

  • In this first part of a new series I analyse the very first Persona game, released in 1996 for the PlayStation 1. I would later be rereleased for the PSP in 2009 but we'll get to that version in a later part. In this first part we dive into the inception of the Megaten series, starting with the first Megami Tensei and Shin Megami Tensei games. We also go over a brief history of Atlus USA and its many attempts at bringing the series to the west. Finally, we go into the story of the first Persona game itself and analyse its roots in Jungian psychology.

    Hey what's Persona 4 Arena?
"Well you see, it's a spinoff of a spinoff of a reboot of a game based on a novel".

"It is a spin-off canonical story sequel to a fourth installment in a spin-off series, which has heavily distanced itself from its roots since the third installment, while still having indications that it is supposed to take place in the same story continuity established by the spin-off the spin-off series based itself upon. So it is a spin-off of a sequel of an entry that had a director change and thus ceased being anything like its previous installments, which were a spin-off of a what-if take on a reboot based on a video game adaption of a novel."

The idea of people actually playing the piano and singing the song in the velvet room is amazing. Since P3 it just feels very lonely, only Igor and his companion(s) and only the MC goes there, Im' pretty sure in P1 and P2 the whole party enters the room. It seems like they just went for another path for good sadly.

Seriously good stuff. It's about time someone took the Persona stories and looked at them beyond skin-deep. I'm only sad it didn't start off with Shin Megami Tensei itself, but all in due time I guess.
Also I'm reminded how the first SMT takes a looot out of old Dungeons & Dragons(the original 1974 edition), which also relied on the alignment of Lawful, Neutral, and Chaotic, and where the modus operandi was, in fact, also to dungeon crawl and negotiate with monsters, convincing them to join your cause! It's honestly one of the truest simulations of oldschool D&D made into a video game.

I actually want some of that stuff in SMT. It’s a extremely unexplained and unrepresented part of psychology that’s honestly fascinating to me. Maybe a social link that touches upon that. They aren’t afraid with getting uncomfortable with some of the subject matter in the games and SMT is probably one of the only series that Freudian Psychology could fit in.

I don't think Mae is the superego. Mary felt abandoned by her mother, which is why her shadow is a child. That's when she lost herself. Mae and Maggie are both her Shadow. Shadows are not necessarily destructive towards others, it can also be directed at themselves. Mae is weakness. Pandora should probably be seen as her current and mutated shadow. Maggie and Mae only care about the original trauma, the mother. That's all they know. Pandora though, have moved on, but since she didn't properly deal with the trauma, it corrupted her, and she suffered from other traumas as well, like not being popular in school.

Also interesting note is that "psyche" is also the word Aristotle gave to the butterfly and as such, butterflies have often ended up coming to represent the human soul and psyche in a number of cultures. In that sense, you could say that the butterfly represents the concept of the human psyche itself.

Lets just ignore how Philemon just T-posed on us at the very end there. Very well done SnicketySlice. This is my 3rd time returning to this series due to the sheer amount of meaning you reveal when analyzing it. Everything is so carefully crafted together, and I am enamored. I review these videos as a way of self-reflection and understanding, as you pick apart of the small details to craft a larger picture that the developers were aiming for. Thank you for your hard work.

By far the best video i've seen regarding Persona. I am reading several books of Carl Jung , it's a shame how so few people mention the importance of junghian psychology in the Persona series.

Funny as there is a Persona 3 and Persona 5 crossover fanfic that has Ken become a Phantom Thief and he mentions that Jungan phycology has similarities to Personas.

Dude..I'm just getting into this series and was considering making some videos about it but my god, I feel as though you've said it all. This video is incredible and I can't wait to watch more of your work. I don't know if I'll end up making any videos on this series but I do know that the passion on display in your work has inspired me.
Thank you and keep it up!!

Awesome work on this series, I'll be checking out each installment. You definitely deserve a sub. I got into Persona later than a lot of my friends but now that I'm a fan I really want to check out it's origins. Funny enough, it feels like I was always going to be a fan. I even share a birthday with the inspiration behind the series Carl Jung.

Excited to see P3's analysis. P3 FES' the answer got me interested in the effects of desire and human condition how the human mind is keeping locked away a primal evil. The game had made me change the way I thought about myself and how I think.

Thank fuck somebody acknowledges the existence of Shin Megami Tensei If.... I've just about grown really tired of telling people it's the 1st actual Persona game that isn't a Persona game. I wish it would get localized or fan translated so i could play it.
This video is a godsend, thank you so freaking much, i can't accurately express the ammount of gratitude i am feeling towards you right now. For the longest time i was actually angry that Persona 1 and 2:IS and 2:EP have gone overlooked , despite of Persona 5's popularity. Like, i love P3, 4 and 5, but i want Persona 1 and 2IS and 2EP to be recognized as the great games they really are. Maybe they're dated today, but their writing is honestly impressive for their time period. Especially Persona 2 and ESPECIALLY Innocent Sin. I'm still surprised at the balls that game had.
