Excellent vids. I went ice climbing on a whim in the UP a couple of years ago. I am a former powerlifter, and I basically tried to do pull-ups with the axes. My forearms were absolutely screaming after a few minutes. Of course, my feet were useless. I am going to try again this winter, but with at least a rudimentary understanding of proper technique.
Enthusiastic, clear, memorable and motivating as usual! I hope this hasn't been commented to death already, but at 1:10, you meant the ice is a convex area (bulging outward), not concave area, no? Thanks again, Will, huge help as always!
Hi Will, at 11:09 I noticed the ice changing colour below the pick placement - potentially seperating from the rock/the surrounding ice. Would you still consider it safe? Great videos, thank you!
@@willgadd2187Hi Will, thank you for your reply!!! It is a "shame" that the clips can´t transport the feeling😀 - na, let´s rather get out and feel it ourselves! Cheers (from a dreadful/climatechange european ice winter)
Great video. I’ve done a beginner ice climbing course last year. The problem I had was getting the axe out of the ice again. I wasted so much energy. Any tips on how to be more energy efficient?
You're probably swinging to hard, swing from the wrist and peck, you don't need be burying the tool. It can also clean easier if you file off a few little teeth near the end.
Rip it out aggressively pulling on the handle after you have stood up totally. The top of the pick is a "wedge" so it breaks the ice, and out the pick comes. Plus it's fun.
Love your sound effects....especially when you were vvvping up in vid 1.
It's truck!
My new catchphrase
Tell me about it 😂

Third time watching this series through and still learning things 💯💯 thanks Will
After teaching martial arts for years your attention to mechanics is amazing. I love these videos.
Thank you, and I'd love to learn more about how our bodies move. There's some commonality across sports that's fascinating to me.
Absolutely love the stoke abt good placements 😂🌞🌞

It's a sound and feel thing, and also about the shape of the placement and underlying ice. Sometimes, but if you are in doubt swing again!
