FAFO! Ice Roof Climbing.
FAFO Ice Roof
Is this clip from Festiglace 2024 stupid, crazy, or awesome? How you see it will probably depend on your tolerance for profanity and uncertainty, and understanding of ice. I love this kinda thing: Big unknowns, physically demanding, hazards to be managed or avoided, a psyched team, and something so ridiculous that it just has to be tried. Most everything meaningful in my life has come from seeing an opportunity to try something different, and then, well, FAFOing with it.
Note that the outcomes here mostly fall into the “Bumps and Bruises” level of the risk-management program I run with with everyone from our kids to new business development: Bumps and bruises, hospital, death....

Ice Dreams: Quebec!

I love ice, and people who make their dreams come true. Marcel Maltais made his dream a reality, and in the coolest possible way! I was just amazed at his ingenuity, stoke, and passion for life. The world needs more people like Marcel, a huge thanks to him and his friends for an incredible day of sharing the joy of ice.
Ice Climbing in the Ghost!

The Ghost! Climbing in the Ghost is always an adventure. The drive, hikes, climbs, wind, it’s just like no other place else in the world I’ve climbed, and I love it. I am privileged to spend ten or fifteen days a year there climbing with my friends (guests, family, filming, all friends), here’s a random assortment of footage I’ve shot in the last few years that I hope gives people who know the ...
South African Ice Climbing!

"Africa" and" great ice climbing!" aren't words commonly used together. But when Will Gadd saw Tim Larsen's Instagram pictures of ice climbing in South Africa he had to go, and what Tim and the other locals showed him completely blew his expectations away. The trip started with beach weather and ended with four new routes, two broken tents, baboons on top of the climbs, a frozen toe and a whole...
It's not a playground, it's a gym!

Some people see a playground, I see a gym 🙂. More training for winter climbing. I often do 3-5 rounds of incline pullups, pushups, squats, go hard! Throw in whatever you feel you need more of from body tension (Front lever progression) to Tabata hangs, get stronger! Simple, effective, and you can do it anywhere.

Helmcken Falls is famous for insane ice climbing, but could you do the same kind of climbs with out bolts? Will Gadd and his wife, Sarah Hueniken, AKA "The Voice of Reason" set out to find out. The Voice of Reason is not happy about it.
Plice Training Video Final

Want to train effectively for winter ice/mixed climbing? Build a “PLICE,” or plywood ice, and stash it somewhere legal or illegal, get strong! I came up with this idea about 15 years ago while trying to train for a 24-hour ice climbing event. The ice was late that year, so I built this thing in my back yard. Originally it was vertical, then gently overhanging, and as I and my training partners ...
You are an Athlete!

You are an athlete, even if you don't think you are.. Your ancestors fought lions, migrated across continents, and flat out survived because they were world-class champions at the sport of life. But we've lost the necessity of physicality, and often even our belief in our athletic talent. So we sit around and say, "I couldn't do (x)." And our bodies and minds suffer with the cost. If we look at...
Training for Ice 1: Tabata Intervals
Просмотров 10 тыс.Год назад
If you can't hang on then will fall off. So developing effective, specific hang strength for ice tools is absolutely critical to make ice climbing safer. If I could only do one exercise for ice and mixed climbing it would be this one, it is the fundamental required strength. Tabata hangs are are simple, effective, specific and fast way to get much, much stronger at hanging onto your ice tools. ...
Gecko Mode! Tabata training for ice climbing
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.Год назад
The single most important strength in ice climbing is the ability to hang onto your ice tools. Getting pumped while ice climbing is sketchy because if your forearms get pumped you can't swing effectively at best, and at worst you'll fall off if your feet blow. So, get stronger. Tabata hangs are just 20 seconds of hanging followed by ten seconds of rest, done for eight reps. I find four sets of ...
Dealing with Ice Sharks

Recent (Jan 23) climbing in the Ghost River area, with old friends Raphael Slawinski and Kolin Powick. Raph can hear a big chunk of ice break loose, but has a solid tool and carefully takes it apart. He still takes a shot, but like a good boxer protects himself enough that he doesn't get knocked out.

A really fun day out with Sarah H. and Ian F. in one of my favourite areas in the Ghost, Valley of the Birds. I had some fun with new to me video editing tactics here, let me know what you think. If you just want to enjoy the ride great, or it might be useful to stop and see where I return to "sag" (hanging straight armed off my top tool so my trunk is loose) to fix my feet or adjust my positio...

Jesus you are bloody rough as guts on your gear. Striking the head of the ice screw with your is bad practice. It’s not s bloody piton.
My failure point on these is my biceps giving out rather than my forearms. Am I doing something wrong? I'm engaging my biceps to keep my shoulders engaged.
what type of axes and crampons would u recommend for beginners?
8:05 at what level of ice climbing do I begin to naturally produce those transformer noises
Excellent job brother!!! I plan to paramoror across and around the Grand Canyon next year. Cant wait to have the thrill your having! Be safe on your future journey's.
Hi, I am in the UK. What are these training tools called? Thanks in advance!
Love your vedios sir. ❤ from the mountains of himalayas 🇮🇳
Iceclimbing is the other side of the game of the climbing arts the best thing to do is take a course or 2 the scout out with someone more experienced then yourself
This has such late 90’s early 00’s vibes
How can buy that training tool?
Is there a Training for Ice 2 coming soon @wil gadd?
Hello Will, Thanks for your wonderful technical knowledge. But what I need know about and what I observed are your gloves. Hi, I am Rohan from India. I go to Himalaya every year and each time I struggle with my gloves which never help with the technical work what we do like holding and using an ice axe, some kind of rope work, clipping n unclipping carabiners, zoomar handling and also to deal with the cold temperature with goes from sub 0 to -10 around at 6800 mtrs. the reason is I have very thick and fatty gloves. I have seen your whole series of ice climbing and I observed your gloves every time, all are BD. please can you help with the model names you are using for mountaineering and ice climbing? Or you can send the link where I can get it online. I'll be very grateful if you recommend a pair of gloves. Thank you.
Wait ... what .. are those bolts I see ... placed in a World Heritage Site ...no bolting zone???
Need to go ice bouldering to build those skills 🤘🤘🤘
You should show yourself taking a drinking

That looks like so much fun, and great training! Thanks for sharing these videos Will.
Ice done did an uno reverse.
I’d be the second guy. Is Will just good at everything? Certainly everything with an ice axe.
I understand the temptation to drink that water but it could contain Dinosaur pox for all we know...
Came here after playing The Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Wanted to see the real ice climbing.🤭
Haffner canyon?
promo sm 😚
Did you film your climb of Dells Falls?
Truly inspiring 💚
Is 'truck' the Candian equivalent of 'bomber' in British climbing jargon? Also what have you done in Scotland? Such an amazing place to mix climb!
That’s some 3am shit right there🤤
Love your excitement :D
guys do this without ropes... not that impressive
Uh, no...
Sounds like you had a blast! I just imagine myself... Falling at the very first move: "FAFO, that is impossible!". Congrats on the climb!
FAFO can be applied to a wide range of activities :). It was fun thanks!
I need this! I’m obsessed with water
This was so sick to watch🤙🫡✌️
Sorry Will, my parents said not to touch yellow ice...
Ha!
Wow💛💛💛🤍🤍🤍💛🤍
This is so awesome ! Good job Will !
Amazing skills Will and I've always admired you not just because of your skills and knowing the dangers and bringing them to everyone attention and respect for the mountains.
Wonderful video.
Amazing!
FAFO: for when the YOLO variation wasn't hard enough.
Ha !
Badass! You're the ambassador of ice climbing
GOAT moves 🙈
Thinking at least WI8?
There were two friends videoing there, so at least 10 ha ha!
Good skills
Inspiring stuff - love the stoke
FAFO ... if you have the skill. Otherwise it's fuck around and FALL OFF!😂
Oh, I like that :).
Awesome climbing and video. It is really inspiring. What kind of gloves do you use? I saw two different gloves on this video.
I thought I could climb it with some light BD protos I like, basically golf gloves, but they got soaked putting in that first screw so I switched to another pair of something, can't remember what. but likely BD Terminators, good eye!
@@willgadd2187 Thank you for your answer
That’s some seriously cool ice climbing!

Hell ya Will! Your videos never fail to get me psyched!
