you are right!! the daytona would never have the aura of the speedmaster. The design of the speedmaster also is way superior with the dome termoplastic crystal and the shape of the case. some people may say that the daytona has better finishing but the moonwatch keep the original design with no aplied index, aluminium bezel, etc

As an owner of an 1861, I always say that if you have never handled a Speedmaster in person, it is so much more stunning of a looker than it shows on videos. Especially in lower, non fluorescent light - all of the details of the case shape/brushed vs polished bevels, and the domed hesalite crystal all pop
Rolex bores me because once you have one model you have all. All the sports models share the same bracelet, same case, same feel. So don’t get me wrong I absolutely love my Rolex submariner. I just have no desire to get another Rolex model. Now omega I could see myself owning a speedmaster, seamaster smp, and aqua terra. Absolutely beautiful watches with different bracelets, different feel on the wrist, different experiences
I don't have a Rolex but lots of my close friends do. I don't know why but I have no desire to own more than one if ever I'm given the chance. It's like if I get a GMT, no use for me to have a Sub. But I own Omega and I just keep on thinking which on is next. SMP300 on rubber , Planet Ocean on bracelet, Globe Master on leather, Aqua Terra on rubber, speedmaster on nato. It never ends! They all look good!
The Omega is an absolute classic in every sense and it’ll still be a classic long after the Daytona has aged with time. Both ultimately are nice watches, but in the real world most are unlikely to ever own a Rolex due to their “preferred” customer list, on that alone the Omega clinched the win!
Teased by the 321 in thumbnail which has unreal fit and finishing when seen in person. Some scoff at the asking price but once you handle the bracelet and see the movement you realize Omega took it to the next level.

Just don’t look at the Daytona under a Marco lense. The finishing is criminal for £10.5k. Truly.
Besides the Speedmaster being more iconic you are spot on with the point that you make regarding the price that you pay. If you take pretty much any Rolex and pay the same price for an Omega, the Omega will beat it every time. If we exclude diamonds on watches, Omega make watches costing much more than Rolex. The 321 Omega, Rolex don't have an answer to and never will as their niche is expensive machine made high quality watches and don't have the skills.
Omega history aside which Rolex cannot much, but unfair to hold that against Rolex as they cannot go back in time, it amuses me that the general public actually believe that Rolex are superior to Omega. They compete in a similar space, albeit with Omega having a wider price spread, but have very different approaches. Both are very good at what they do and how they do it and a buyer cannot go wrong with either.
Yes the Rolex looks flashy. Yes it looks expensive. But it does - imho - not look good. From a strictly design standpoint - Omega any day of the week and twice on Tuesdays.
I loved the moon watch design 10 years ago, I love it today and I will love it in 10 years. This is the reason I'd take the Speedy over the Daytona any day of the week. It is just timeless. That and the Rolex design language just doesn't speak to me.
I’ve had Rolexes and other Omegas but the best experience i’ve had so far in a watch is the Omega Speedmaster. I wind it look at it and inspect hesalite glass and checks time which I would not experience in any other watches. My interaction with a Speedy is phenomenal! You honestly develop attachment to it plus it is iconic with a huge history backing.
I love both I own the Speedy 3861. I prefer the Speedy Moonwatch maybe because I can get it and because of its horological significance. However although I'm a purist I would have preferred Omega put a ceramic bezel at least offer it as an option with the sapphire sandwich. Once the warranty expires on my 3861 hesalite I will instal an oem sapphire back, that movement is gorgeous and I want to be able to glance at it and to show it. Next I will get a sub or sea dweller to have the perfect two watch collection and I think thats all the watches I will need other than my g-shocks.
What is that writing on the bracelet on the omega? Part number? Why did they put that on top, where it’s visible?
The Daytona commands the price... but will always live in the Speedmaster's shadow.
One is a safe queen and show off piece for the Nouvaux Riche, the other is a tried and (Nasa) tested, hardy, beautiful, tool.
The Daytona has bezel numbers upside down between 20 and 40 seconds or maybe you're supposed to hold it in your hand for timing?
Great video James, congratulations on owning both these iconic watches. I own the 1861 and love it, I have never owned a Daytona but have worn one, I would be interested at retail but can never see me paying the inflated prices. I find the games Rolex ADs play irritating and will never engage or encourage the aftermarket dealers either. I guess its the Speedy for me for the foreseeable future.
This is only Omega watch to keep beside 321. Nice comparison, showcase. 👍🏻

Thank you for your honesty. One of the best reviews. I recently held a Speedmaster and it was a beauty, but after having bought a Submariner recently I gotta say that I’m totally sold on those Rolex Cerachrom bezels.
You're 100% correct in saying that the 2 watches cannot be compared.... The omega is the most perfect chronograph, arguably the most perfect watch at its price point (The rolex explorer fights it for the title I feel)...... I can't wait to try this new version on to see if I take to it or not (only ever tried a reduced on and that was over a decade ago) ... The Rolex Daytona IS the ultimate sports chronograph and you have the best modern iteration of it..... It has everything that you could want from a chronograph watch, the design, functionality and legibility, the durability, the true water resistance and the easylink comfort extension on the bracelet... But as you point out, this is a circa £20k watch (due to the Rolex game) whereas the speedy is a circa £4-5k watch...... I wish the Tudor black bay chrono would've been better designed as it could've stolen some of omegas thunder in the sense of what you're getting at the price point..... It has some good things going for it (the breitling column wheel movement, the build quality, the true water resistance in the screw down pushers, the symmetry) but its too flawed to be even considered against a speedmaster, the biggest gripe being the snowflake hand (bonkers) seconded by the case thickness.........
I never liked the Daytona ; I wouldn't pay even the retail for one ; never mind grey market prices. But man that speedmaster it's a beauty.
I adored the Daytona until it was pointed out to me that the middle of the two subdials do not line up to the 9 and 3 o'clock indices. That and the thinner lugs on the pusher side compared to the left side makes in unbalanced in my eyes. Speedmaster has none of those issues.

Hey Geezer. Which watch ? The Daytona I purchased pre owned unpolished, a 2019 model. The Speedmaster I’ve worn quite a lot since buying so will have marks related to use

I would be totally happy with either of these in my collection.
I personally like the Daytona better. But it’s much harder to get. You need a serious history of buying watches at the Rolex AD, before you get the privilege buying a steel Daytona for retail price. It’s like you said, The Mount Everest of all watches. I own four years the 🐼. I consider to buy the newest model Speedmaster. It has a lot of character, and I never owned one. Thanks for the review

I am big rolex fan, but I don't like daytona in steel, but I love speedmaster. if daytona then in two tone or in gold. speedmaster got that great looking caliber in case back and nice contrast on dial.

i actually do not like the daytona at all. i think its over done. liike all those citizens dials that are too busy.. its a ugly watch! OMMEGGGA!
It’s funny I find the Daytona overly hyped, excessively bling and it’s design is meh… But it’s good that people love it and fight for it.
The authorized dealer hates me too but I’d rather pay more than kiss a dealers behind but that’s just me.
Would love to find an AD near me willing to give 20% off on a new 3861...

For me the Speedy wins, but I understand the hype of the Daytona. Both are very different watches for very different types of people. For me I feel that the dial on the Daytona is dated. It hasn't changed much since 1987. It's an icon but it never kept it's icon aesthetic, by that a true panda dial that's not busy. Rolex added bling over function. IMO the best Daytona's are the vintage Pal Newman Daytona's from the early 70's. NOW THAT"S when I would take a Daytona over the Speedy. To be honest I was never drawn towards a Daytona. It gave me the old man midlife crisis vibe. The Speedy looks vintage but it's youthful. It doesn't attract attention. The Speedy compliments the man. The Daytona outshines the man. They are very difficult to get at an AD but for $38k you can get a bunch of them used on Chrono24.

I think that's looking at it too simplistically. Would Michael Phelps or Usain Bolt be regarded as the best in their fields of they didn't win golds at the Olympics? They are rightly judged by their achievements.
But it's also about the journey as much as the destination: the speedy passed the objective tests it was set by NASA (tests that the competition including Rolex failed) and so it proved it's quality both before and long after the moon missions (still the only watch certified for EVA).
The other watches talk the talk, but this one has walked the walk.

There's a flip side to that coin. Would Daytona have become such a hype piece, had it not been gifted to Paul Newman by his wife?
I'm also suprised nobody mentions the badly finished bracelet & clasp on the 3861...it's like wearing a cheese grater. Gonna try a Forstner/JB re-issue Komfit while my watchmaker polishes up the whole Band. Love the Daytona btw. I fancy an early 2000's 116520 with black dial & satin bezel.
Being a proud owner of the Speedy 3861 I don’t find the bracelet of clasp badly finished at all. Sharp by design, but really not cheese grater standard by any stretch of the imagination!
@@MichaelSmith-fn1ci So showcase filing down the front of his speedy clasp was unneccessary? The Case is "sharp by design" but is beautifully finished and completely smooth. Unfortunately the laser-cut metal pieces on the bracelet are not. Very easy to fix, but I didn't expect the bracelet would need polishing...not on a new luxury £5k watch. I did ask about this at my local A/D, thinking I might have suffered from bad quality control. But alas, I was told they're all like that.
The other annoying thing is my 3861 runs slow, which isn't to spec & a pain to keep dead accurate.
another great video. you and I have 3 of the same watches and my viewpoints on those watches are fairly similar! explorer one and daytona are two essentials from rolex in my opinion. The aftermarket prices are really irrelevant if you collect watches and want the best. If rolex increased the msrp on a daytona to 30k for steel sports there will still be a waitlist around the block.

I’ve owned the new sapphire speedy for a month now and there are sharp edges and parts of the lugs as well. I’ve also handled several others in both sapphire and hesalite prior to purchasing mine and they all had sharp edges. With that said, it’s a beautiful watch and different from my Rolex watches however I’d choose my Rolex over my speedy any day of the week.

No offense but if you are going to do a video that shows your knowledge of watches, you should be pronouncing the name of the watch correctly. It's pronounced oh-meg-uh not om-eee-ga
No offence but you shouldn't assume you are pronouncing OMEGA the correct way and its the only way to pronounce it. Where I come from we pronounce OMEGA like this.......om-eee-ga. We are both correct, depends which part of our planet you come from.

Omega have caught up the Submariner with the Seamaster, very little between those 2 now. Speedmaster is a level below the Daytona, the Zenith Chronomaster is more comparable to the Daytona than the Speedy is.
One is glamour, one is heritage. Both have their place in the world.
