The musical structure kinda reminded me of Robert Fripp's "The League of Crafty Guitarists" in that it feels extremely mathematically regular and from this regularity beauty is born. Gosh man Flea and John are on a whole complete different than Omar. I love the Marz Volta, but you can tell Omar more of a studio type player rather than improvising jam type artist like John and Flea
Probably a clean channel with the neck pickup, I also saw him switch to the bridge pickup during the interlude of the first jam. But he most likely used his DS-2 or His Fuzz. Actually it sounds like they all turn on distortion at some point. but its not always on. John changes from Distorted to super clean to semi distorted.

I don really know anything by Omar and havent listened to him ever, but was he only fooling on this jam? John's improvising is simple, but has great sense of melody, the Omar one were full random notes all ove the neck (I'd say he was using the chromatic scale but when you use the chromatic scale it does not sounds like random notes they sound in order). As for Flea and John, always great. I said it tons of times and I'll say it again. John should really get more into the guitar community and jam with other guitarists. The guy has such a great and recognizable improvising and could really work in a guitar jam (one plays lead, the other one rythmic, and then they change up roles). Id really like to hear him jamming with Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, maybe Greg Howe, John Norum,etc. it would be historical for sure! :D
