Nothing wrong with poplar. It is a solid, easy to work wood and great for painted bodies because it's big weakness is that the grain is boring and occasionally has green-brown mineral streaks. Even as a tonewood, it has been used for a long time to good effect on acoustic instruments.
I love roasted necks. Much better feel on your palm vs finishes. For fingerboards it sounds similar to Ebony for the high end, but mids and lows more like normal Maple, which isn't necessarily good. Ebony's bass response balances that out, Maples low mids emphasis not so much. But turning up the bass a little and cutting the frog fur highs gets it normalized. Stainless Steel increases the effect. I have roasted one piece fingerboard/necks w both Stainless and normal frets. So far I m staying w Stainless just for it not wearing out. Normal frets sound a little better, but for me its not enough for the inconvenience of refretting.
