10 years later, 118d 143cv N47 engine.
210.000 with the stock chain and it's still working as the first day.
I remember during the night i was praying not to break the chain.
Just motor wirh M47
Nice work George. I’m building a 116 Trophy car and I found an area where it rusts. It’s two U shaped box sections (one left one right) that is tacked onto the rear bulkhead, just in front of the petrol tank. In particular, it rusts in the corners and around the fuel tank mounting brackets.
Remembered you from the corsa page, you've gained a massive following. Nice! Good video too :)
Thanks mate🙏🏼
Love our e88 with the n52 engine - lots of fun to drive and the car has been very reliable over the past 200 km
Really good information, I also have the interior burns.
CCC idrive was updated in mid 2006, much better. I coded one in to my old 330i, replacing the 05 idrive that had failed. Easy to tell which one you have, the one in your clip was a later version. The early versions had a different colour background, more brown than grey. But yeah CIC is the way to go for sure.
Ive got an e87 with the n47 engine (your videos on the 5 series have been fantastic on how to work on these engines) ive found that the LCD pannel in the radio can fail if it gets too hot ie left in hot sunlight for too long. Not a big issue as the radio doesn't fail but can be a bit annoying.
Keep up all the good work on the videos 👍
Much appreciated Harry🙌🏼
Excellent straight to the point video 10/10
Thanks!
Very informative video George
Cheers Ian!
Mate newly everything you mentions has broken on my car 😂 great video I’ve got the 120d M Sport. Turbo, reluctor ring and now the Bonet cable has snapped! Any ideas on how I open the bonnet??
I have an 06 116i. Timing chain tensioner was sorted before I bought it and the abs sensor is sorted so the major issues are sorted. I wouldn’t be able to run anything over the 120i as fuel bills would be prohibitive.
Enjoyed this video, thank you. My old Dad used black boot polish to restore vent colour.
Did it last?
Hi George, I remember how well it worked...looked like new. He used 'cherry blossom black' He said he used cotton buds to apply in circular motions and then buffed it to a shine (just like his boots) He said he only did a couple of times per year. On my e82, I always use a sun windscreen cover and on my drive, I keep the front of my car turned away from direct sun during summertime. I think it lowers the risk of front headlight haze too.
120i, e88
Bought it with 52k miles on the clock. Timing chain issue with 62k miles now. Both rear shocks went after a while, front shocks to follow soon after and now I have an issue with the low pressure fuel pump.
😊
Such great cars. I wish they were available in the US. Good video, George.
They certainly are, the e82 are available👍🏻
compared to disasemble a Volvo its crap XD
My mates e87 had a leaking diff from around 60k miles. Also the dreaded DTC warning, but relates to the battery warning rather than the reluctor rings themselves..was a strange one
Also I think they stopped the N47 when they got to the 14 plate reg. The main issues were with cars from 08 - 11
Nice vid fella 👌🏻
Cheers mate
Window regulator drivers side failed on mine. Unsure if that's a common issue but I guess over time there is going to be more strain on it due to it being used every time the door opens and closes. Also had an issue with the ABS rings not long after I bought the car. Got stainless steel ones from Ebay and been fine ever since. Also the bonnet catch release likes to stick if its not opened regularly and lubricated.
Hi George. Thanks for the info. How about the 2008 123d E87 engine??…What can you tell us about that model??…
Cheers
Great video. Also the EPS. Electric power steering failure. The shock absorbers are made out of dairy milk 🍫. The n47 engine leak from the oil filter housing gasket. I’ve only just bought one and these are the issues I’ve had so far and I’ve only had it a month 🥴
Yep, luckily I have hydraulic power steering as mine is pre LCI👍🏻
Had mine for 60k miles it was fantastic. Only prob ever had was the drivers door window reg and that was my fault it was icey and the windows drop to open the door and I didn't clear the ice before trying to open the door
E81*
Vent discolouration: when I bought my 2010 model 2 years ago I cleaned them, then applied back to black from a bottle with a cotton bud. Dream fix!
Permanent fix?
@@GeorgeAusters Yes. I was expecting to have to re-apply regularly, but I've only done it once 2 years ago and they are still black now, when previously they were white like yours. However, my car and AC doesn't get used very often, but it does get sunlight now and again, so maybe it's the AC that turns them white.
@@mickmarshall3517i have the same problem with my vents ,i'd like to know how did you fix it ?
@@rafaelsouzapedrosa
I literally still apply 'back to black' with a cotton bud every 2 years 👍
Thanks for the video. I am currently looking for a 1 series, I see a fair few 118 and 120 models available at decent prices... After watching the vid I now know why...Will stay away 😂. Good tips, cheers. 👍
No problem 👍
Hey, I have 2004 120i (e87 n46) I have a rough idle, and code p110d (throttle position sensor) does this mean I need to change my accelerator pedal/sensor? Thanks man
With the air vents, apparently you can just use some “back to black” and it sorts it (I’m going to be trying it soon)!
Let me know your results👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters I think olive oil just works wonders. PS NO joke :D
Hey george, I'm thinking to buy a 2005 120i 170k kms with recent servicing and new parts (timing chain, rocker cover gasket) installed. Should I buy it?
If you wanna restore your vents just use vinyl glance or silicone on them and they will look like new again
For the vents I used shoe polish. Works fine
I have a 2010 e82 I’ve blew out the motor and replaced it I’ve been told my cats are bad and My car turns off when I come to a complete stop but I can turn it back on and it hasn’t been preforming the same any suggestions
116 and 118 use different engines. Not the same quality as well. It's a bit strange to write all the 1-series apart from your model off as useless. Look at the amount of 1-series 116 and 118 driving around with over 200k miles. You don't see that with a Corsa or Clio. Just look after your car and you'll be fine generally speaking.
Yeah but n42, n43, n45 and n46 are not worth the average persons time
@@GeorgeAusters Right, sounds like youre an expert.....
@@mehmeh5471 sounds like he did his homework
@Waves Motion For the 116 generally the engines are fine but i personally encountered a lot and i mean a lot of electrical faults. I bought mine with 175.000km (pre facelift e87) without test driving it as the guy already took down the plates.Generally speaking you shouldnt buy one without test driving even if the car seemed fine (everything matched no ticking etc) and check for different problems while testing it (i had abs problems). So to everyone reading this beware of too good to be true deals even if the car is checking all the green boxes, because as i have learned a cheap bmw can easily become an expensive one.
are 116i e87 good
Any ideas on my 116i, I keep having to re set the time on the display, I get in and its just a line of dashes .
Just adding something else, my e87 118d n47 engine every now and then comes up with a big engine light and a p115c fault code 😑 I replaced egr valve and cleaned the cooler and tried 4 different maf sensors oem and no oem and still have the fault code sometimes. I don't know what else to do
I have a 2007 E87 120i with the N46 motor. I urgently needed a car after a couple of trucks nose-to-tailed my VW Jetta (same year), and the BMW was the cheapest low kms car available. It is very nice to drive, it was specced with the M suspension so it handles pretty well. It is firm enough that it was unpleasant while I was recovering from being battered around in the accident though.
It does lose a bit of oil, and a bit of coolant, and there's a VVT error that comes up on hot starts and puts it into limp mode requiring a restart or two to get it going again. I'll get the motor, seal, and sensor replaced when I send it in for a service. They basically have to pull apart the engine to get at the sparkplugs anyway, it's just another layer, the cam cover, to get to the VVT motor and sensor.
I hit a feral cat driving home from work the other night, and it damaged the right fog light, so now the car is telling me to replace the fog lamp, presumably just the bulb.
I owned an MG Metro, and a 2.8 Audi A6. Honestly, this isn't causing me any major grief.
The real 1 er by Chris Bangle! The nicest of them all.
Just bought an 08 118d E87, the faults are, abs light on, stop start not working, rear de mist not working, radio display vanishes, clock resets itself, tyre pressure light on, heated mirrors not working, - been told all this could be down to one fault, the battery is low and not running non essentials and sensors can give errors on low power (makes sense)
Can anyone help. My daughters 2015 116d has lost its acceleration especially when you shift down a gear. Not safe to overtake. It won’t rev past 4,000 in N and there are no fault codes. Regularly serviced.
Great video! Though a bit anciety inducing considering how many things I have to look forward to now. I'm from mexico, and I've got a 120i with the N46 engine. Apart from oil level sensor and a strange ECU failure, I've been doing pretty alright with this engine. Had it for a year an a half now, and use it as a daily. Currently, I have water leaking into the entirety of the driver side floor carpet. Got any ideas?
Try clearing the drains underneath the scuttle pan
I have a 118i and the engine oil level seems faulty, ive added 2litres of oil now but stills comes up "+1"
My E87’s Shock Absorbers went off and I was on B-Roads 😆 but it is fine now. I have the 116i and I must say it has now done 118,000 miles and it has never let me down. When I took it for repair it clearly noted ‘VEHICLE PARKED AT OWNERS RISK’ and sure it was! Somebody used tire spray to spray the tailgate and that panel for the petrol filler cap and it has all dried :( I have an airbag light on so the sensor has just died for the Passenger Side. One more annoying thing is the boot doesn’t open... Either I use the key or it opens when I unlock the car. Either way I wouldn’t be here because I bought a Mazda 3 top spec and a trucks brake disabled and just crushed the car :( I do miss it. I bought the BMW on 47 890 miles and it has served me well! Though the air conditioning system made a right noise, the next day I get a recall leter. Still is not done as yet but I enjoy my car a lot
120i 2008
What engine ? And it a good one or a bad one
And one more question
The motoroil pressure is too low that Cole on the dash red
Is it a famous problem on that engine of bmw or it’s a serious shit
Thanks guys .
The E82/N47 (120d), the problem I came across is not the timing chain as such, but the chain tensioner and it's not a minor fix because the chain is at the back of the engine, so engine has to come out. Also, the injector seals can be a problem, I would recommend checking regularly under the engine cover for signs of carbon deposits.
Injector seals get replaced when you get the timing chain replaced👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters - Just as well
whats the 2008 120i convertible like engine wise please, is that the one you said stay away from? thanks
got the m47 1series 120d 2006 111,000 going strong it is my first car but i did hear something about getting the swirl flaps removed to stop any future engine problems on them as it can be pretty pricey if they fail not sure?? ive literally just brought a brand new rear sub frame and replaced the old corroded one as it was failing on the mot apart from that it seem pretty good for a 18+yo car with 111,000 on the clock
Im gonna subscribe so that I learn a lot about BMW 1 SERIES. Next yr im gonna buy it
Wise choice!
Hi, I'm from Belarus. A week ago I bought myself a 118d 2005. Great rides, excellent condition. Maybe you can tell me, I have an aux connector, but there is no aux point in the radio tape recorder, only СD and radio.
Underneath the arm rest
Not sure I agree regarding the ccc - it’s actually very useful and informative, agreed it’s not as good as the newer idrives but I’ve never had an issue, it’s far superior to not having one, unless you’ve had one in your own car, I’m not sure how you’ve come to the conclusion that its unreliable and problematic?
Heat the vents up with a lighter to remove discoloring mate
hi is a BMW 1 Series 2014 2015 plate are they good engine 20l and 1.5 diesel can someone let me know please
I want to buy one I'm in the UK
E81 120i N43 not to be recommended?
Thanks just double checked and avoided the N engines!
The N52 is the BEST engine choice!
I have a 118i and the engine oil level seems faulty ive added 2litres of oil now but still comes up ""+1"
I had a 2008 118d from new, only issues I ever had with it was the cable to bonnet snapped, one of the motors for the electric windows burnt out and the rear washer jet hose come loose, just over 97000 hassle free miles and some t*sser t boned me coming out a side road and wrote my car off 👎
ur offset wheels please ,i wanna put 225/40/18 on mine but i'm not sure if it will fit or not .
Hi George thanks for the informative detailed videos…
What about 2014 116i 1.6L petrol 136hp? You think the engine is good and reliable or still full of issues??
Thanks again and all the best
I'd like to know this!
The rear wash/wipe motor fails, as the water is fed through the wiper spindle. If/when the jets gets a slight blockage, the pump forces water into the motors drive system, followed by corrosion and unrepairable failure.
Had this exact same issue this week, then the water leaks into the boot.
@@ManontheOutside can you fix it?
@@jasmienvandelook6925 we had to replace the whole motor, approx £30 for the part, but a lot more expensive if the garage does it
Our e87 120d m47 engine had issue with window regulator on both sides of the rear doors , the actuator also on both rear doors (don't know why , maybe because they're not as used as the front ones) and also with the rear wiper engine that got stuck because of the corrosion. Due to what I've read and seen on RUclips those are some common issues. No worries regarding sensors or engine issues.
Just bought a 120d and the rear window opens a little after full close. Did you manage to fix yours?
@@pauloabrantes5722 It's a bit awkward, to be honest. If it's closing full and after that falls a bit. It's the same on both sides or just one? If it's just on one side I would try to get the window regulator out and put it back like it would be a new one. Maybe this will "reset" it. In my situation, the cable from the regulator torn so I had to change it, but after I've put it back, it was all good.
@@olteanovidiu7687 Just one side, thanks for the answer. I'll try something like that, but only if the problem gets annoying, I'm not really feeling like taking the door apart.
Anyone come across a BMW 116i F20 N13 engine with smoking and water leaks? what was fixed on it?
I ended up respraying the vents which makes it look perfect, no point trying to replace them. I think it's the sun too but I wouldn't be surprised if it's the heated AC that causes the corrosion.
Not a bad shout!
@@GeorgeAusters I got the experience of dealing with both and found spraying is definitely better because you ensure that perfected look. A second hand one may end up with tiny corrosion as well.
Oh I wasn’t talking of 2nd hand one, I was talking about buying new👍🏻
@@GeorgeAusters ah... Never really looked into how much they are brand new. Not sure if it's worth it since a respray seems like a better and cheaper option in my opinion.
Just had a few abs lights flicker on for about 5 seconds today then vanish. Flashed an abs light the other day aswell for less than a second before vanishing. Had one of the rear wheel sensors done a few months ago but been sweet till now. I hope its not the other one failing too but probably is :(
Are you sure it wasn’t your traction control?
@@GeorgeAusters was definitely the left rear sensor last time. Not sure about now as the errors vanish too quickly/I dont have an obd reader so im just assuming it could be the other sensor. Time will tell I guess.
Having an 116i, not had any issues outside injectors clogged initially. I don't drive like a snail, but I don't drive like a M version either, never had any issues.
Is it a bit underpowered, yes. Considering you barely have any roads in my country where you could actually hammer it, not a problem.
Fuel usage is 11L mixed, which I can't imagine to be realistic on higher petrol motorizations
The fuel economy for the 130i is around 10-11L /100km mixed driving
@@GeorgeAusters i mean the actual fuel usage, the computer shows 8 for mine with winter Conti TS830 P tyres on, however, if you do the math, it actually goes up to 11 mixed use
I realize that the bigger engine will have less work to move the car, however in a clogged up traffic, I still say the real value on the higher ones is simply higher.
I have a 2005 116i with the N45 engine. I had the timing chain replaced like 4 years ago and since then, 0 problems. The main downside of this engine I think is the lack of power. Also no 6th gear which it really needs I think.
This was fixed with the LCI model but they seem to have less reliable engines. The bonnet release cable on mine came loose also and I had to have that fixed.
The interior vents on mine are not discoloured at all, (even though now it's 17 years old) but I did see that before on LCI models. Maybe they changed the type of plastic or coating?
what KM did your car reach when you replace the timing chain? because i also have 116i and start to think to replace it for preventive although there is no issue about it until now.
@@MrPedawdaw 124500 km. But I bought it with this mileage. Now almost 155000. I think it is still fine though.
@@yerunski thanks for the info
I change chain with 180000 and now is 193000,no problem. N45 with 6th gear. May 2006 first registration.

You can fit LEDs if they are the correct size
Just had my crankshaft pulley replaced at 150K miles, had the turbo done at 90K M47 120d. I wouldn't say that's too shabby...
Stem valve seals break down and let oil
Into combustion chamber transmission has harsh gear changes due to clutch delay valve and the computer in the transmission needs it’s oil replaced
Is the engine loud on these cars 118i sport model
Interesting how the vane where the adjustment tab sits on hasn't faded
Any ideas on my Bmw 1 series 118d. Smoke from the exhaust and burning oil like mad. 2015 with stage 2 remap. I drive slowly and do a lot of start/stop (48 miles a day) driving. Look after my cars pretty well like.
Replace your valve stem seals, my uncle changed mine without removing the cylinder head. I also had the same symptoms you're describing.

The fuel filler flap is also a really common problem on these, I still need to replace mine.
What's wrong with it? Is it swinging around when you drive like mine? 😂
@@jasmienvandelook6925 The previous owner put a little bit of duct tape on the plastic tab that sticks out of the filler door. It makes it just thick enough that it wedges the door closed and doesn't swing around while driving.
what style are the rims?
You'll find a lot of the engine problems with the N47 are down to BMWs unrealistic service timings. To prevent chain failure you should be changing the oil every 6k miles not as they suggest think they say service every 12 - 18k miles.
Exactly what I recommend!
@@GeorgeAusters Hi dude. I have a 123d 2008 with 184000 km. The timing chain is original. I change oil all the 15000 km. I use Castrol 10/60. What do you think about this oil?

stay away from 1.6 1.8 or 2 liter ? but those are the most common engines out there + the reason why most people buy 1 series with 1.6 is because its cheaper :) if everyone could afford to buy a 3 liter version i thing they would, but it bloody expensive !

Hi George, an unrelated question here but can I use an endescope camera to view if swirl flaps have been removed? Without having to take the manifold off the car? Cheers
Which engine?

We have this car (the 118D), issues we've had (currently has 80K on the clock): Rear washers block easily and the water then leaks into the rear motor and corrodes it; water then leaks into the boot. Oil leak on the rear differential. Failed bonnet release cable. Battery constantly complaining it lacks charge whenever it gets slightly cold. ABS rings rust and cause both the rings to warp and screw up the ABS, putting the car into limp mode. Then the rings totally fail and the ABS sensors become ruined. Exhaust flexpipe snapped. Unknown 'tinny' sounding rattling noise under acceleration which despite 3 garages looking at it, they cannot nail down. Problems with the door retainers not holding the doors properly. Absolute worst thing about them is the condition based servicing, which BMW claims saves you money because they only service the bits actually needed. We have had a service done and literally had it back a week then the service light comes on again, then it has to go back in for something else. A month later, light comes on again...something different - totally infuriating!!!! It's going soon, we've finally got fed up with it!
Any info on the 2.0 litre petrol 2011 plate
