    For those that don't understand Spanish ... Adrienne said
    "but for me, I feel that when i want to speak Spanish, i can do it, because it is my first language and because I'm latina, I feel that (yes,) I can speak Spanish when I want , when I .. whenever I feel like it"

      +Lucy Krystal Thank you I was hoping that someone would have translated what she said. I agree she should be able to speak when she wants but notice she doesn't do it on this show except for when Julissa was on I hear. She would never be able to carry on a conversation with her co hosts if did truly exercise her right to speak it whenever she wanted. I just think the person that asked the question of the hosts she has a legitimate beef. Her boyfriends' sister high-jacked the conversation and purposely excluded her. In that scenario it was rude. I don't think it is rude in general.

      No it's about consideration and basic manners. I speak three languages but wouldn't purposely exclude someone out in a conversation. Use the most common language that everyone can understand. If someone doesn't understand I'd translate to make that person feel involved/interact in the conversation. If it's a private conversation that that's a different situation, I'm referring to an open conversation.

      @@dreamgladiatrix This is true. It is about manners. I am bilingual and I try to speak Spanish with this one friend because she feels more comfortable in Spanish. But once our American friend joins us we only speak English. Because we don't want to leave her out. I went hiking with my friend and her husband once. Never again...Everyone was Chinese and only spoke Mandarin. Only her and her husband would use English. Everyone knew English so it wasn't like they didn't. But I felt so left out. I was hanging with Japanese acquaintances once and suddenly they started to speak in Japanese. They paused one minute and apologized to me. They spoke English the rest of the day. Same situation where I didn't speak the language but one group was respectful and the other one left me out. And the Japanese group knew that I understood some Japanese but were still considerate that I wasn't fluent and couldn't keep up.

    The thing about Latino households is that some siblings are not accustomed to speaking english with their siblings and are taught "hablen español para que no se les olvide" (speak spanish so you won't forget it). I used to speak english with my cousins but when my brother would come along I would immediately switch to spanish because I felt awkward talking to him in english. Based on the description I can't tell whether the sister is doing it with rude intentions. It could be that she's not comfortable speaking english with her brother, as was I, if that's the case it's nothing to be offended about. However she should ask her boyfriend, away from the sister, if she's saying or is giving the impression that she dislikes her. Then it's something to be offended about. Hopefully the brother would be honest in their relationship and inform her what is being said in spanish

      omgitstracey HOSPITAL SETTING: I work w/many filipinos who do the same thing. At the hospital, when the patients were given a questionnaire/survey of their stay ( at time of discharge) , THAT was the number ONE complaint ( filipinos (staff) speaking their language in front of /around the patient to each other). The patients found it rude, disrespectful and inconsiderate. It became such an issue that the administration had to address the issue. In the envelope of our paycheck a MENO read on this order: Being bilingual is a blessing (some employees are multilingual which is a triple blessing) but, speaking any language (other than English) in front of/around patients who DO NOT speak the “other” language that you are speaking can be seen as DISRESPECTFUL. Please be mindful of THIS ( it’s about our patients and NOT ABOUT US) let’s help to make our patient’s stay less stressful. Now this may NOT BE THE EXACT WORDS OF THE MEMO BUT IT WENT ALONG THOSE LINES. To each floor was sent this memo as well and asked for the CHARGE PERSON to meet w/staff and enforce this rule. Well, it lasted for a while....but it still exist. To me, if a person come to reside in America, ENGLISH is the language that should be spoken when you choose to be EMPLOYED here.Your native tongue is allowed on your lunch break and OFF DUTY but when you are dealing w/the public ENGLISH should be spoken ( there are SOME EXCEPTIONS to this rule of course). 10/9/2019.

    As a Spanish-speaker myself, I'm very proud of my roots, but I do think it's incredibly rude to interrupt her own conversation and just take it over like that. I would never do that. I was always taught that if you're spoken to in Spanish, you respond in Spanish and visa versa. That sister should know better. She is being rude as hell in trying to exclude the girlfriend. I'd be pissed. On the other hand, I don't feel the need to cater to people outside my conversation. If it doesn't involve you, you don't get to make the rules for my private conversations.

      I agree that it is rude to take over the conversation and speak Spanish but it’s not about catering to people in my opinion. It’s about letting them know and helping them out. The girl wouldn’t know if it’s a private conversation or not because she doesn’t speak the language. I don’t see the need to have private conversations in front of company who don’t speak Spanish but to each their own. I would help translate.

      @Christina Prado I totally agree with you. There's a time and a place, and I definitely think if the girlfriend got the vibe that they were trying to exclude her, it's probably because they were. I was just meaning that if I'm having my own conversation in my own right, in whichever language I choose, others don't get to dictate how I do that if it's none of their business, but in this case it is the gf's business since it was her conversation to begin with.

Little did she know that this young man understood and spoke that language too. Cant tell you how happy I was when he talked back to her. Her jaws dropped. I just hope she learnt her lesson. It s never ok to say mean things about someone right in front of them in a different language.

      Nah fam. I mean if you are conversing in a group then yes but is sounds as if when they are in a group and she has other people to talk to they started speaking spanish between the two. That's fine. But also if it is someone else's home they should speak the language they are comfortable. I think it is rude to expect people to accommodate you especially when you are trying to integrate yourself in the family as in you are in a relationship with one. Now when I had friends over mom spoke english unless she was speaking only to me. But they werent around alot. A girlfriend and boyfriend hanging out wither needs to learn and ask or just start a different conversation with someone else. Especially if they werent part of the conversation before hand.
      Now if she is alone and then being left out that's messed up. But in a group where there are other people you could and should converse with ..... you dont need privy to every conversation or comment.
      Also as far as Tamar's comments go. Why do people who dont speak the language assume we are talking about them. Yeah that happened but not every time and definitely not in front of them. At least not in my Mexican experience. Its under breathe in spanish or in another room.

      If he is really that important in her life, I think that learning about each other's culture is really important, if one of you speaks a different language then it's on you to learn that language. Or, be okay with the fact that they are going to have conversations, not necessarily ones where they're saying anything negative - around you, and you're not going to understand it. I am Chicana, my language is English. if I was to see somebody, especially if they were significant to me, and they spoke Spanish or another language...I would do whatever I needed to to learn the language. To appreciate their culture is showing that person that they are important enough to me, that I want to learn. I know plenty of Chicanas that married somebody whose first language is Spanish, and they learned it. It didn't happen all at once but now they can speak it fluently. And, if they are planning someday to have children, more than likely their children will speak Spanish.

I used to ask for translation but I would get told if I wanted you to know, I would speak English. I now stay away from people who mainly speak other languages now. I used to try to learn the language but that just made people mad. Most Americans want to feel a part of a group. We are a very noisy group of people because we are very friendly. I mean people from other English speaking countries find us loud and too friendly. We like to get to know everyone. Also if you want to have someone mind their business, call that person later.

    • @zhabtema
      @zhabtema 8 лет назад +4

      +Monae Jones I see what you are saying. However, sometimes it's not so simple. I saw an episode of Scrubs where the hispanic girl was engaged to an African American husband, and her brother came to visit. Because they left to America at a later age, she wanted to continue speaking Spanish with her brother because it helped them stay connected to each other, especially since their Mom died - in essence, it was something they shared together. As much as we want to acknowledge others for feeling left out, I do believe there are reasons for someone to speak Spanish other than throwing shade. Second, many Latino cultures believe it is part of maintaining their culture and respect by continuing to regularly speak in Spanish "if you don't use it, you lose it." Imagine, if you will, if someone said it was too much for African American women to wear weaves and wigs in the office because someone had an OPINION about their appropriateness for the workplace. Not only is it your general perogative on what to wear, but consider how significant hair care really is valued in the African American community (and others, obviously). Would you think a woman wearing a weave or wig, even tasteful, should be called 'rude' by others in this instance?

    • @zhabtema

      THat part I got, and as many people said, the sister was somewhat rude because she inserted herself into the conversation. We just feel that Tamar presuming they're talking shade and DEMANDING they speak English in front of her on this basis implies some sense of insensitivity. I also wanted to highlight the point that, in absence of actually knowing the sister, some Spanish speakers still do this because 1) it's something they share with their family/part of their culture; 2) it's an unconscious reflex, like they are doing it without thinking, and here we have talked shade about it instead of confronting her. Both of these reasons have nothing to do with trying to shade someone or exclude them. I recommend she confront the sister and talk about it.

    As a Spanish speaking person, I feel as though in public, if I am not around Spanish speaking friends, I will not speak Spanish. It's rude in my opinion. There's a time and place for everything and every language.
    Pero al mismo tiempo, si tu te sientes como ellos hablan de ti en español, pues di algo.
    (but at the same time, if you feel like they're talking about you in Spanish, speak up)

    This is where monolinguals are made annoying. Not everyone has to speak your language in front of you, your own insecurities are your problem. Its by far easier to blend and mix languages than just stick to one, theres some things that just don't translate well and for you to be ignorant and be like "he cant speak to his own sister in their native language in front of me." Nah, grow up. If you wanna know so bad, learn the language. Otherwise hush.

    • @xassanbileful
      @xassanbileful 8 лет назад +38

      But the thing is, I'm Somali is not about Spanish language or any other foreign language. Its about speaking directly between 2 people if you have a 3rd person, even if you speak the same language. So, just wait or excuse the person gently and respectfully, or drop the third wheel forever, or say it together. But never ignore the 3rd wheel. Never. Its disrespectful.

    • @realmnthrwknives
      @realmnthrwknives 8 лет назад +23

      +Bilenaire Ignoring the "third wheel" yes I 100% agree thats disrespectful. But i don't find it disrespectful to say something to one person in one language and the other in another all in one conversation. As long as its equal and you're not pushing somebody to the side who doesn't understand then no I don't find a problem with it. I've done it plenty of times when both of my friends understand english but one may not understand something in their native due to translation or anything and ive had to completely stop speaking in English to re explain the situation or a different situation to them in their native. Idk the comments on this video rubbed me the wrong way and for someone who has friends of multiple different languages I have never felt excluded from a convo just cause the language changes.

    • @realmnthrwknives

    I think a lot of persons misunderstood what was said:
    1) They're (the couple) already having a conversation
    2) The sister inserts herself and changes the language
    3) The girlfriend is left out
    I speak 4 languages and honestly the language switching happens naturally. I've gone in a circle with all of my friends speaking to me in different languages without missing a beat. However, there's always a part of me that's conscious of persons who don't speak the language. If I'm with my Italian friends and bring an English speaker, I don't care what someone says to me, in whatever language I will respond in English because I've been that person who didn't understand.

      +M. Williams I love it a considerate person. Like I have said umpteenth times today on this topic. I don't have a problem when someone speaks their language. I have a problem when you exclude me from the conversation when you could easily include me by speaking English or by translating when you are done. Which doesn't happen most times. I am sure if her boyfriend had translated or explained what they were discussing she would not have felt left out. If it was something private he could also tell his girlfriend sorry didn't mean to do that but it was something that could not be discussed generally because of its nature. She could understand.

    • @prechus
      @prechus 9 лет назад +8

      4daluvofnikki I think that may be her problem also, the fact that he didn't take a half of a second to include her or explain to her what his sister is saying. It shows that there may other problems in communication between them even though that's neither here nor there.

  • @BlueAngel2397

    To me it depends. My in laws are Russian and will primarily speak in English in front of me but speak it with an accent and not too fluent. However there will be situations when they need to convey what they feel and can't really express it in English and will speak to my husband in Russian. That's not rude to me. My parents are the same. They speak in Spanish but if something is hard to say in English they will say it in Spanish in front of my husband. It's fine. Now, if my parents were to be perfectly fluent in English and decided to speak in Spanish in front of my husband anyway that would be rude in my book. People should analyze the situation first instead of jumping in to conclusions that's something is rude.

The issue is that his sister butted into HER conversation with HER boyfriend to rudely speak to him in a different language . I don't care who you are or WHAT language you choose to speak in, it is VERY RUDE to interrupt someone's conversation, but even more BLATANTLY RUDE to interrupt by speaking a different language . And if you ever did it to me, I would make SURE to call you out for being so rude and disrespectful . Like Tamar said, his sister did that PURPOSELY and lots of bilingual people are just as rude . I don't care that you speak 2 or even 7 different languages, if you interrupt my conversation, I'm going to make sure you're feeling JUST as uncomfortable as you're TRYING to make me feel . You may well be saying something normal that may or may not be private between you and that 1 person, but whispering when there are others participating is rude. The better thing to do would be 1. save the convo for when the two of you are alone or 2. if it's important, simply ask for excuse to speak.
    You cannot have a 3 person conversation where only 2 can understand and not expect the LEFT OUT person to feel offended.
    Absolutely no one is telling you not to speak your language, but the SPECIFIC situation being addressed was indeed rude!
    NB I was a bit aggressive in my comment because I'm just a tad annoyed by some of the other comments.

    No shade to Spanish speakers but i have realised that they do this a lot. I live in a foreign country that is non-Spanish speaking and the first thing i noticed about Spanish speakers is that they are perhaps the only ones who would just out of the blue speak Spanish to each other without translating to you and even laugh. Other people from different countries would pardon themselves and speak their language and then tell you what they were talking about. I find it rude but now i have accepted that Spanish people are just like that. They love their language and dont really consider people who cant speak it.

      +latina7292 It is definitely wrong if it is done intentionally to be rude to someone behind their back. Also, I think that foreigners moving to a new country should try their best to assimilate to that country's customs by speaking the native language. However other than those two instances, I have no problem with foreigners communicating in a different language, even in front of native speakers. I think languages are a part of what makes us who we are, and people shouldn't feel like they have to hide their culture in order to accommodate someone's insecurity.

The only ones who care are people like you. If you have a problem with it, that's your problem. They don't need to learn English. They are able to prosper in this country even without knowing English. Why would they want to learn English anyway when the people they would then be able to talk to would just be unpleasant biggoted people as demonstrated by your comment? Hsh1234 Agree with you to a certain extent. Spanish speakers are definitely very accommodating and if I speak my limited Spanish they tell me it’s ok and don’t worry if I make mistakes but at the same time...I live in Washington heights which is in the upper west side of nyc. It’s predominately Latino here and if you go to a supermarket all you hear is Spanish and a lot of times people address me in Spanish and I’m.....black. I’m just not very dark so they think I’m Dominican. But I’ve had some people get mad at me because I don’t understand them and then I say “I don’t speak Spanish” and then they get embarrassed...the problem is they shouldn’t assume everyone knows Spanish, especially in the USA. I remember once a guy was unconscious on the floor and everyone was panicking. I called 911 and the operator asked me vital questions like his age, if he’s breathing, etc and when I asked the people with him they didn’t know English...even in an emergency I couldn’t help them. I get that if you live in a place that has a different laguange to yours you should try and learn it, but why be so hard and rude with those who don't...english speaking people just assume you have to know bc it's easier for them.
