When ever I see o-rings being changed I think about when I was a tech for a scuba shop and would service high pressure regulators. I was taught to service regulators by a Mares designer/technician and he was adamant about using the correct tool to remove o-rings. He used dentist pics, he got them from his dentist who regularly discarded his old ones. He said that if you used screwdrivers, nail files etc to remove the o-ring there was a possibility that the metal surface that the o-ring sat on could be scratched and a leak could be formed. But with a dental pic, the slight curve got under the o-ring without scratching the metal. He also said that the o-ring should be lubricated, for Scuba/air, it should be a silcone grease and for liquids the lubrication should be the liquid itself.
A good day out, great to see Amelia enjoying the helm. Just think when Sarinda is all done and in service, she will be a qualified Captain ferrying the old folks about the Mediterranean.
When you pour from a container, pour so the exit is on the top or at least down the side, that will let the air in as you pour and stop it surging, you will get a smoother flow.
In case you two forget just look how Emily has grown to how long you've been here on boats. What a treat to see her on the helm and fishing good family togetherness and then the boyfriends start, ha ha. Those engines now sound really sweet Simon so well done you but how you find all this time is a total wonderment.
Modern diesel engines commonly run oil temps of between 95 - 105° when running at speed. It's always good practice to write date and hours on the filters when you change them.
We are looking at a boat which has twin inboard diesel engines. Smaller than this but its good to see that self service is possible. Buying the boat is only the initial cost, and we are currently doing a spreadsheet of annual, bi annual and five year servicing costs on the Volvo Penta engines which our target boat has. It's all new to us although we have sailed for many years and done some routine diesel engine maintenance, these massive twin engines are more complicated. You managed all that work with minimal mess, which is great. I hate seeing dirty engine bays.
Great video. Lovely seeing you all enjoying the boat instead of working on it. Unfortunately, with boats it can be all work and no play especially when they are older. She runs lovely, great job. 😊
You need Simon a electric circulation fuel pump. To circulate the fuel that removes the water in the tanks and filters out that black microbes microbes in the fuel. You need to put in fuel algaecide right away for your tanks are now filled with those microbes. So sooner the better to start circulation in a loop though a filter. No fun be caught on the ocean with clogged engines. We enjoy your videos
Basically a 2 micron bypass filter system to continuously clean the diesel fuel. The same idea is valuable for engine oil. Bypass filters shift the micro debris before it can get into the engine bearings. Clean oil also lasts longer. Lab tests will show when the oil needs to be changed.
Het guys that a cool video on the engine service regim, Simon does just do it with his eyes closed doesn’t he. Now I’m not a spanner man or should I say I dont engage with it unless it Absoloutley must be done which I’ve done in the past. So this video helped bolster me as I want to do a diesel course. I have a stern drive boat but i am looking to get a single engine shaft drive boat. The future of boating for me and Deborah are that i do all the engine annuals myself or we have to give it all up. Thanks for sharing. Can i just say it was lovely to see Jemma on the camera. I would just say if anyone bullies her rad this. I was a bullied at school, dont know why i am no one special. But the guys who used to bully me and get other less brain worthy boys to bully me are all wasters today, i see them outside the pub most days smoking looking like real losers. Now with parents like you Gemma will be looking at the bullies in the same light as she and her brother will do very well as they have great role models. Mark xx
My daddy taught me everything I needed to know about boats. He said, "Son? A boat is a hole in the water that has the tendency to vacuum out your wallet on a regular basis."
Re the water pump end covers you can simply revers them just making sure you save the model numbers stamped on the front side. Peter I used to work for Jabsco and Johnson pump here in Australia.
Hi,I worked on diesel engines for over forty years and I hated the smell of the stuff especially if you got it on your overalls and had to work in them all day.a great video,cheers.Roly🇬🇧.
I notice you used elbow fittings on the galley water pipes. JG Guest is pretty stiff so fittings needed. Polypipe is more flexible (like the early Hep2o). You can often plumb a sink with no elbow fittings. Better flow, less to go wrong and less cost.
Its a nice size and a powerful boat, as you say it can probably be even faster, love to see that. Whats with all the sharks!? Love all your videos, keep them comming, please.. 😄
Did the carpet get sent off for cleaning ? Nice to see Amelia enjoying herself with the oldies. Did she finish her little sailing dingy. Was looking forward to seeing her sailing that. That camera is a brilliant bit of kit, see what’s down there before you start the fishing competitions in future. Thanks for the hard work on the video.
On eBay or Amazon there are 12 volt pumps for automotive oil transfer that may make the oil change faster and easier than the vacuum pump. Fishing off of wrecks will get you in some big conger ells and other big species as well.
If you have any truck stops in your area they may sell 30W by the gallon. That’s how it is in the US. Any way you could buy a 55 gal drum and keep it at your shop? Then refill jugs from that.
Loved the video. Great work as ever. Did you get another reading of the oil temperature. Was it lower than 100C?. The camera was pretty decent for something cheap.
anode are small. Order for now and for next time too, so you can do the work without waiting for them to come in. Maybe all the things you need for the service next time....then reorder when you have used them to have for the next time.
Diesel Bug is the name given here, but with a scientific name of Hormoconis resinae. It is indeed an issue here, and it will thrive in most climates as it is quite a hardy algae. Likely more so in climates where it is cold outside as you warm the inside of the vessel, that differential in temperature results in condensates which increases the likelihood.
enjoyed the vid, I may have missed it but do you have oil coolers fitted? I would imagine you have, if your oil is getting hotter than you like it maybe the raw water cooling side of the oil intercooler is partly blocked, just a thought. on all vessels I have owned they have had an gearbox oil intercooler and on the same raw water feed one also for the engine oil,
Gemma, you are a very nice person to not give Simon a little grief about that "gender pay gap" comment - not many American hubbys can say those things!
The boat goes lovely nice to see Ameila how's your son doing these days I liked the underwater camera nice to see the tiny fish was there anything wrong with it afterwards enjoyed the video 😊😊
Oh yes another thing as your doing the full service is check the Blowers Fans are working good as these must be blower any fumes out from engine bay before you start the engines as Boy I have seen Boats Blow up into a Huge Fireball always make surethat that the Blower wires switches are working good it is cheaper to fix and replace than the whole Boat
Right or wrong, over here in the colonies, we pronounce the name of those filters as RAY core. Interestingly (or not), I had an American built boat (36 foot Uniflyte) that had British built Cummings V8 504 cubic inch diesel engines..
Sorry. Me again. Engine oil should run around 120 centigrade because it evaporates any moisture that gets into the oil. Cold starts and short runs will allow combustion gas water into the oil. 135 C is the absolute maximum to avoid oil degradation. Fully synthetic is ok to 150 C (300 F). Older engines of course should not be given synthetic oil. It’s too thin and blows by piston rings and turbo seals.
Simon says it’s pronounced “Rackor”. I’ve always said Raycor and never got corrected for my error. To my ear, “Raycor” just sounds better. But what do I know?

Who needs music when you can listen to those twin sisters purring away in harmony.

When I was a bargee and used to change the impellers I always included a new case cover as they act as a wear plate and improve the flow of water.

I have used ASAP supplies several times and they have been great.
Thank you . I enjoyed that trip.🤗🤗🥰🥰🦘🦘
Great to service the engines before winter storage a few jobs less to do for spring Time
Now you can see how good a mechanic Simon is. He can work by feel.
That’s an awesome boat guys love it. Well done on the maintenance work you’re spot on with everything.
Those engines sound great!
Just reverse the impeller cover-if not already worn. And don’t forget bug juice in your fuel. Looks like you’ve got algae growing.
Nice change bit of spanner spinning instead of wood butchering
In an emergency, or you have trouble finding new end plates, you could always turn the end plate the other way around.
My daddy taught me everything I needed to know about boats. He said, "Son? A boat is a hole in the water that has the tendency to vacuum out your wallet on a regular basis."
Well what a day for you nice to see this done before it gets too cold. Crack on be safe and enjoy
Thanks 👍
Re the water pump end covers you can simply revers them just making sure you save the model numbers stamped on the front side. Peter I used to work for Jabsco and Johnson pump here in Australia.
When you change your fuel and oil filters before putting new filters on fill them up with fuel same oil filters on you wouldn’t have starting problem
Stop enjoying yourself, I’m jealous, get back on Serrinda
Hi,I worked on diesel engines for over forty years and I hated the smell of the stuff especially if you got it on your overalls and had to work in them all day.a great video,cheers.Roly🇬🇧.
Great video , thoroughly enjoyed it , great boat , very fast 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
Lovely solid piece of engineering..especially the Detroit Marine diesels series 6.2/6.5/8.2's. You've got your motor boat looking lovely.
i used to work at parker hannifin .. they call them the same as simon called them
Twin disc 5061-A requires 3 liters of fluid, change frequency 2000 hrs. 30 or 40 weight oil. check the filter screen in the drain.
So if yearly engine runtime stays the same, next oilchange due in about 30 years😂.
Gemma, just remember " riighty tighty, lefty loosely "
use your oil suction pump to draw fuel threw the filter via the fuel return
Yes that’s a good idea
I'm with you Simon having those engines in your car would be awesome, oh just had a thought you've got a van could be your next project. 👍
Those are some lovely sounding engines!!!
They sure are, but would definitely be nice to make the boat a little quieter while travelling 😆
@@ShipHappensAdventures Hmm.... wonder what could solve that problem ;)
I notice you used elbow fittings on the galley water pipes. JG Guest is pretty stiff so fittings needed. Polypipe is more flexible (like the early Hep2o). You can often plumb a sink with no elbow fittings. Better flow, less to go wrong and less cost.
Interesting and entertaining. Good to see both of you doing maintenance and fishing. 👍🎣
Nice 8.2t application
Its a nice size and a powerful boat, as you say it can probably be even faster, love to see that. Whats with all the sharks!? Love all your videos, keep them comming, please.. 😄
Great vlog as always guys, love the fish camera. Stay well.
Yay! Always a treat!
Nice goin, nice to see Amelia, thanks m8s, stay vertical Eh!
It's pronounced Ray Cor, We were the house Trucker in the 80's&90's for the Export market via Air Freight, wonderful company to do business with!
Success. Caught some fish. Had fun with a cheap underwater camera.
Great video, nothing fazes you, keep them coming .
A day on the water, That'll!
Did the carpet get sent off for cleaning ? Nice to see Amelia enjoying herself with the oldies. Did she finish her little sailing dingy. Was looking forward to seeing her sailing that. Beautiful !
If you’re stuck you can use the flip side of those water pump end caps.
If you live on an island you should learn to live off the sea. Love your shows, keep up the great content...
On eBay or Amazon there are 12 volt pumps for automotive oil transfer that may make the oil change faster and easier than the vacuum pump. Fishing off of wrecks will get you in some big conger ells and other big species as well.
Smart use of puppy wee pads
They are really handy to have onboard, great for cleaning up mishaps!
Been fixing boats all day now I’m watching Ship Happens . Something wrong with me!
since it's a 'murrican boat, you can call them the same thing we do on this side of the pond "ray-cor"
If you have any truck stops in your area they may sell 30W by the gallon. That’s how it is in the US.
Any way you could buy a 55 gal drum and keep it at your shop? Then refill jugs from that.
25:07 You can tell when someone is doing a full service by the bleeding fingers! 😂
Loved the video. Great work as ever. Did you get another reading of the oil temperature. Was it lower than 100C?. The camera was pretty decent for something cheap.
anode are small. Order for now and for next time too, so you can do the work without waiting for them to come in. Maybe all the things you need for the service next time....then reorder when you have used them to have for the next time.
don"t know if you have the same problem in cold water as tropical, there is a algae that forms between the water and the fuel, just my two cents!
That was ACE...
Funny, American engines take less oil generally. 350/ 5.7L Chevy takes 6 quarts. My 3.0 1991 309CE Mercedes takes 8 quarts.
Another good video 🛥🛥👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it
All the kit:)
You should drain the filter bowls before you put the new filters in.
enjoyed the vid, I may have missed it but do you have oil coolers fitted? Push it Gemma push it real good lol
Your boat sounds great👍👍🛥️
Thx for the vid.
Gemma, you are a very nice person to not give Simon a little grief about that "gender pay gap" comment - not many American hubbys can say those things!
In case you don’t know, sand shark is damn good eating!
Used to catch dogfish out of Swansea, good eating they are.
great vid on channel thanks lee
Find somebody that can sort out some four bladed propellers for that boat it will make a huge difference
The boat goes lovely nice to see Ameila how's your son doing these days I liked the underwater camera nice to see the tiny fish was there anything wrong with it afterwards enjoyed the video 😊😊
Send that fuel to be tested for Diesel Bug
In Australia Gemma is right.! Chris from Western Australia. Chris from Australind.
Diesel fuel vapors are not explosive. Blowers not required. Gasoline vapors are very explosive.
Should have cleaned the racor of dirty fuel before putting new elements in
Right or wrong, over here in the colonies, we pronounce the name of those filters as RAY core. Interestingly (or not), I had an American built boat (36 foot Uniflyte) that had British built Cummings V8 504 cubic inch diesel engines..
What happened to yer new carpet? I've had several 6.2 l Detroit diesels in Suburbans and I loved them! Animals indeed!
Ha,ha,ha,😂you know why I’m laughing Simon
That yellow funnel looks very army 😂😂😂😂😂
It seems to be nothing but sharks down there.
Does the boat have hydraulic levelers? If not they will help plane out the boat faster, and maybe save some fuel!
We always filled our fuel filters with diesel before installing, no need to prime them that way.
Is there anything your husband can’t do? Yall are the best.
He can’t use the washing machine 😂
Sorry. Me again. Engine oil should run around 120 centigrade because it evaporates any moisture that gets into the oil. Cold starts and short runs will allow combustion gas water into the oil.

Ray Core filters for my part of the word but then I put my luggage in the trunk, girls wear bonnets on their head and check the air in my tires.
Hey Alley prop goes faster than a stainless Steel prop check with other boat the same size as yours and see what prop they have
maybe they are both as dirty as each other but the dirt come's off easier when it's wetter
Why not clean the fuel filter housing out 😎
Jema you are pronouncing it correctly
Next time. Fill up ya filters, first, especially fuel. 😅
the dark stuff from your fuel filter is diesel bug, Need treatment . Wouldn't hurt to have a fuel polisher
Simon, it is pronounced RAY-cor 😇
Simon, STOP pickin' on Gemma!!!
Should have prime the filters first what engine's are those are they 4-stroke Detroit
Simon says it’s pronounced “Rackor”. I’ve always said Raycor and never got corrected for my error. To my ear, “Raycor” just sounds better. But what do I know?
Good Work. Why is the Diesel red?
Because it’s red diesel
Can I ask where you got the yellow boxes behind you Jemma , Barry Mac 😊,
They were given to us when we entered the Sea Angling Fishing Comp, great fishing boxes! Not sure who makes them
Those water pumps look like Johnson pumps, same as my gas engines.
