I was on the receiving end of a Stuka attack in Rotterdam/Netherlands. I will never forget that hellish siren. (I am 88 years of age now).

There are people, who complain they can't ride backwards in a train. Imagine being the rear gunner in a Stuka in a dive. Crazy.

The G force during dive recovery was high but only lasted less than 20 seconds.
My grandfather was a radio operator and gunner on a Ju 87 throughout the war. He often told me that the crews flew completely drunk. And that with almost every application. Greetings from Germany

The Stuka has always been one of my favorite aircraft of WW2. Its menacing shape, combined with the siren, always fascinates me. Nice video! More videos about the Stuka, perhaps the exploits of Rudel, will be awesome.

Accorrding to Eric 'Winkle' Brown, the Ju87 was the only dive bomber in WW2 that could actually accomplish a 90 degree dive angle and still be able to pull out safely.
Yeah, I read that too. I think he also said that Stuka felt completely comfortable in such a dive, like being in its natural environment.
@@showtime112 Indeed. He also observed that at 90 degrees, it felt as though the plane was going to tip further over, but never did. A well designed craft.
It's the only aircraft that can do a vertical dive to this day.

Another very interesting fact is that Stuka's had their landing gear equipped with explosive charges. If one gear was damaged or blown off in battle, the other gear could be "jettisoned" via an small explosive charge that cut the connecting bolts. Some Stukas that have been restored have had to have these explosive charges de-armed so that they could be worked on, safely.

I'm a 71 YO history buff. Around 40 years of age, I was introduced to a German lady who told me her father had been a Stuka pilot. She broke it off with me because I just kept asking about her father.

I'll never forget walking into the Milwaukee air museum and seeing a Stuka hanging from the ceiling. Very informative. What a uniquely horrifying monster aircraft.

Thank you for more feedback! It would be interesting to cover some more Stuka and especially the most famous pilot. There's detailed description in his book how he sank the Russian battleship but sadly, there are no battleships in IL-2. I'll need to figure out something else.

Unknown to the general public,Rudel was flown to an airbase in the southwestern US in the late 1960's to give the airforce's ground attack development team (callsign "AXE") advice on developing a ground attack aircraft that would become the A-10
Wish I was Col. Rudel's tail gunner.
On 3rd July 1942 Eleven Hawker Hurricanes of No1 Squadron South African Air force shot down fourteen Stukas and an ME109 and damaged two more Stukas without loss, all in a 45 minute action. The Stuka was only any good if there was no opposition. Unopposed it was an effective and accurate dive bomber.
I really need to do some Battle of Britain stories, this comment reminded me of that.
My dad was a machinist and heavy into aviation, so he always had these books around. My favorite was the one on WWII aircraft. There's just something about that era that fascinated me. I, of course, was just going by aesthetic, since at the age of 14 I didn't know much about the historical significance other than I knew there was a massive air war during WWII. Anyway, some of the ones that stood out to me where the P-38 - that double boom is just sexy, the P-51 (of course), the Spitfire, the F-4U (I was a fan of Baa Baa Black Sheep, so that was a natural choice), and the Ju-87 (one of the few German aircraft that I liked). I didn't know what it's mission was (although I did read up on it eventually), and I didn't care. I just liked the way it looked.
That's how you start with an interest in aviation. I remember getting box cutouts from various airplane models from a son of my dad's colleague. They were mostly WWII and I also knew almost nothing about them but they were so fascinating.

@@showtime112 My father was in the USAF and in 1962 we were transferred to a small base in West Germany. We had rented a house locally and I went to our landlord's home next door to drop something off for my father. As I was standing there in his house I noticed a picture of a JU-87 with him standing next to it in his flight suit. He had been a Stuka pilot on the Eastern Front. When he saw my interest he was happy to share his stories with me. I was only 11 but already had a keen interest in aircraft. Having known someone who flew them I have always had an extra interest in the JU-87.
Personally I believe that the Dauntless was the best dive bomber of the war. But the Stuka in the right environment was devastating as well.
Perhaps you can do a video comparison of the early war dive bombers like the Stuka, Val, and Dauntless? I would enjoy that.

Certainly the Dauntless was a good deal harder to shoot down. It was a real 1940's aircraft (with retractable gear) while the Stuka was a real 1930's aircraft. I do not know in what way a Stuka would be superior to a Dauntless, except having a siren. The Stukas, you better have really strong fighter escort or control of the skies. An unprotected but well flown Dauntless was a tough adversary for even a couple of Zeros.

@@joeelliott2157 Well the Dauntless also had a longer range, (even longer than the Val I believe) carried more ordinance than the other 2 dive bombers plus was faster. Not much to dislike about it.
@@raulisrael7342 Perhaps the Stuka could be more stable, in a more extreme dive, but I will put up with that to have more speed, tougher engine, more than twice the ordinance load and almost triple the range (of the B model). Besides they normally dove at 70-80 degrees which is pretty damn impressive.

I'm so glad you appreciate it. You probably usually hear English speakers try to pronounce Italian words and that's a disaster 😁 Fortunately, I studied it when I was younger so at least I know the pronunciation rules.

That lower aiming window is interesting. Few know that the Fairey Battle also possessed a window in the cockpit floor but in the case of the Battle the aiming window was manned by the observer who used a bomb sight during bombing attacks

I've read that the Henschel predecesor's engine made a similar noise while diving and during the Spanish Civil War this proved very demoralizing for the Republican troops. Even when the airplanes just dived and did not drop bombs.
It was purely for inducing terror, look up Jericho Trumpet.

Rudel was still alive when Fairchild was designing the A-10 and was consulted on it. Some of his recommendations for a ground attack aircraft, based on his experience with the Ju87, were incorporate into the A-10’s design.

The proud tradition goes on, I see. The choice of placement of the main weapon in A-10 was something that could have been used during WWII era also quite possibly. A cannon firing through the propeller shaft like in many fighter aircraft of the time could have been a better way to carry a weapon capable of harming hard targets. For a designated dive bomber however heavy, AT capable cannon armament must have been but an afterthought.

.....I read somewhere that the Tank Buster, Junkers 87G, only had 6 rounds of 37mm ammunition per gun. If that's true, and I think it is, it puts a whole new light on the effectiveness of pilots like Rudel to knock out so many ground targets.
That sounds realistic because at latter stages of the war since the Stuka would probably not get more than 1 attack run on enemy before it would have to head back to base out of fear of being shot down by patrolling allied fighters so why carry more heavy ammunition than would be needed and lost when the Stuka is shot down or to weight the plane, down ,make it slower effect its maneuverability and increase fuel usage since there was a shortage of aircraft ,fuel ammunition and repair parts for the Germans maybe German air commanders only gave pilots a limited amount of 37mm ammo to discourage them from staying over the battlefield too long to make more attacks and get the plane shot up or destroyed by anti-aircraft fire or fighter planes
Rudel says, in his book, that his unit was also equipped with Focke-Wulf FW-190 but the pilots, and he himself, were not satisfied by its toughness and stability, so many of them asked to be given back the Stukas. Rudel ended the war flying a Stuka with modified commands, because he had been wounded by Romanian "not so friendly" fire in 1944: according to his tale, he was in flight when Romania switched side and when his group tried to land on the Romanian airport they left from, they were shot at by the AA guns and flew away, he lost a leg under the knee and had a specially modified plane made for him, with some command which is actioned by the foot as a manual command.

I like this video very much and just subscribed! It good to remember that the Ju 87 was supposed to be replaced by the Me 210 due it's increased obsolescence. Unfortunately Willy Messerschmitt started to put in production an awful airplane with dangerous issues without fixing it's problems. Because of him the Me 210 was supposed to replace the Ju 87 and the Bf 110 of which both stopped the production to make space for the new incoming airplane but when the Me 410, a much modified and better version than the Me 210 is already too late to make up the lost production of 1½ year of the much needed airplanes thus they were forced to keep in production of the obsolete Ju 87 and the Me 110....

It was surprising how big an aircraft it is . Standing by the side of one it is huge ! The siren when first introduced would be on from take off and could not be turned off .It was not till later was it able to switch it on and off . Which must have been very tiring for the crews . The undercarriage could be jettisoned in an emergence landing . Flying out of grass fields , grass would collect in the spats . This maybe the reason , they were taken off . We could take 4 "G" positive without any problems , and may 8 . But I don't think I could do it day after day as these guys did !
That was also the reason why the Ju 87 was taken out of service over England.
They were pure suicide missions. Top flight speed 390-402 km/h.
The Hurricane 511-542 km/h. The Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IX 656 km/h. That's self-explanatory. It's like taking part in a Formula 1 race on a bicycle.
I don't claim to be an authority on the Stukas, but as I understand it, the Stuka's versatility was also it's greatest liability. It wasn't a dedicated fighter, or a purpose-built anything else. It was pretty good at a lot of things, but vulnerable owing to design compromises.

Hans Ulrich Rudel had 2 X 37mm cannon on his, he was the only man awarded the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds.

During the Axis aerial assault on Malta ~ a place that earned the title of ‘most bombed place on the planet’ ~ once more modern fighters were made available to the defenders, the RAF made use of the remaining Sea Gladiators to take advantage of the automatic pull-out feature of the Stuka. One Sea Gladiator would loiter at low level, usually near Grand Harbour, and pick off Stukas as their auto pilot pulled out of the dive. They even increased the firepower of one of the biplanes by attaching two extra machine guns to the upper wing. I think they christened this one ‘The Bloodiator’.

Stukas caused havoc among soldiers on the beaches of Dunkirk. But in the Battle of Britain they were sitting ducks against Spitfires and Hurricanes of the RAF.

I would be interested to know how and why the wing design came about? It must have been terrifying being bombed by them. In the UK 'airfix' made nice models of them which I enjoyed making as a kid. I think the attraction was the shape of them, in my mind they were like the equivelant of a light trail bike with big chunky tyres😁.
I seem to remember that the wing design had something to do with easing visibility from cockpit. That's an interesting analogy with the tires 😁
Monogram/Revell, Academy, Airfix and others make model kits of the Stuka. At 65 and retired, I still build models, and the Ju-87 remains a favorite subject.
@@showtime112 the cranked wing is actually really strong. Secondly it lets you use shorter undercarriage legs which for the Stuka was helpful operating from rough airstrips close to the front. It let them build a strong fixed gear. On the eastern front they tended to remove the JU-87s wheel spats to prevent mud from clogging it up. The 87 survived several attempts to replace it. The HS-129 and BF-110 were supposed to be better ground attack planes ( the HS-129 even had a BAK-75 75mm cannon for the job) but the 129 suffered from unreliable engines( French radials ). The BF-110s were in high demand for night fighter conversions. The BF-109 frequently found itself serving as a jack of all trades on the eastern front. Though the 109s narrow track undercarriage was always an issue

It was always a treat going to a hobby store and going through all the different models trying to decide which to get. Most kids today don’t have the patience for it. However there is a very active gamer following that is into figures of lore and building dioramas of them. So at least that is a good detail exercise.

I haven't read the book. My 'to read' list is getting bigger and bigger all the time 😁 But I imagine it's very interesting.
I fly giant scale R/C aircraft and one of my favorites has always been the Stuka. It flies smooth and docile making it a lot of fun to fly. I sure wouldn't want to be stuck in one with any of the allied fighters around though!
That must be a fun hobby, I hope to try it someday!
The last version of the Ju 87 was the Ju87H, dual-control trainer (an attempt to teach pilots how to stay alive in the thing) not the 87G.

As someone smarter than me observed, there wasn't a siren. It was the panicked screams of the tail gunner.
It's hard to imagine what that experience must have been like. At least, there was no panic that pilots must have had, realizing they would hit the ground 😁
Just 40 years prior..they were flying in literal crates, and only a few years from the Stuka they were flying combat jets.....the speedy advancement in aeronautics is one of THE greatest and amazing human achievements.
I suppose that's why there are still so many people interested in that period.

It was generally abandoned by 1943 since the psychological effect was gone and it caused extra drag. In this video, it's used a lot because it is so recognizable.

British pilots who caught them in battle said Stuka was German for "Sitting Duck" they were so poor in dogfights.

What would have happened if the Stuka Landing Gear was folded and streamlined into the wings and a more powerful engine added.. with cannons and machine guns and acted as a fighter bomber??Just a thought..
Hard to tell. It probably would have been complicated to redesign the gear to retract. The wings contained a lot of fuel which would have to go someplace else.

I agree. This is my favorite airplane of WW2.It took a pilot in great physical condition to constantly handle the g forces and courage to go into a vertical dive facing AA fire.Undoubtably,the COMMIES intensly hated this plane.

"Kill" claims by airmen of all sides, in all battles, but esp WW1 and 2, were grossly exaggerated. Often claims of "kills" against tanks in the Eastern front by German pilots grossly exceeded the actual number of armoured vehicles that were present. This exaggeration was actually encouraged by the leaders, esp Goebbels, as it had immense propaganda value.
I doubt (as do many historians) that Rudel achieved anywhere near the claimed kills, but Germany needed another "Ace" hero at that time.
In reality, most effect by all ground attack planes by all combatants was against unarmoured vehicles, trucks, trains, buildings, personnel etc. rarely against armoured vehicles.
Captured German tank crews said that the hardest thing they had to do was convince rookie replacement crew members to stay inside the vehicle, as it was much much safer. Direct hits were rare, disabling hits even rarer, most damage was by near miss bombs that damaged tracks, or sometimes flipped the vehicle.
They also mentioned the psychological effect was the most effective, especially the sound multiple rockets from P47's, Typhoon/Tempests etc. The screeching sound of the rocket, plus the explosions scared the poop out of soldiers. The rockets needed a direct hit to do anything, but unguided rockets just aren't accurate enough, esp in WW2.

Figures mostly refer to Rudel and they are called 'claims'. Some sources do believe that those claims were exaggerated, sure.

Stuka dive bombers biggest failure was the bridge at remagenden 1945 being shoot out of the sky by US AAA gunners and fighters, the West was lost for the German air force, but the Eastern front was an equal match.

Stuka,s were of great value when the luftwaffe had air supremacy. They were superb dive bomders but poor fighters. As a fighter bomber it was of no use. When escorted and protected by me 109,s they were very effective. If they used them this way against the british fighter command airfields during the battle of britain they would have won.

One hundred and eleven Ju87 Stukas covered by half as many ME 109s were dispatched to SW Britain on morning of Aug 18,1940 to bomb several airfields and were set upon by the RAF. Thirty were either lost or severely damaged in the a.m. and were withdrawn much to Goering's displeasure. Even with top cover they were picked off so easily when broken up. "The Battle of Britain"

My grandfather told me that when you heard that horrible he'll siren you could not help but run for cover, 75 years later he still gets chills. Also the memoirs of Rudel in his ju87 is an incredible story,a lil nazish but pure combat tale. Read it you'll love it

Hans-Ulrich Rudel had 12 confirmed ariel victories using the Stuka as a fighter.
Perhaps I will cover some of that in the future.
Rudel (well known Stuka pilot and ace) had a rear gunner (maybe 2 of them) that shot down more than 5 planes. Does that make the rear gunner an ace?
Interesting question. In Vietnam, Americans credited WSO's with kills and gave them ace status but I've never heard of Germans doing that for the gunners. Some of them must have shot down more than five enemy planes.
afaik they didn't "activate" the sirens. They would run for the entire flight of the Stuka. I can only imagine how maddening it must have been to fly.

The soviet AAA is a Ks-12 of 85MM.....the last US aicraft shot down over North Vietnan was a US Navy F-4B January 14 1973 by a Ks-12......from Stukas to Phantoms.....still deadly!!!
