They did a terrific job protecting the bombers...but were dead last in kills as P-51 pilots for the 15th. Army Corp. You could not destroy the German Air Force staying with the bombers. That's why in 1943 Gen Jimmy Doolittle ordered all fighters abandon bomber protection and seek out and destroy the German Air Force when he was commander of the 8th. & later 15th. Army Air Corp. Also over 60 German jets had already been shot by the 8th. Army Air Corp before this raid on 24 April 1945. A German jet had already been shot down one year before this raid unlike what this video claims. Below is Gen. Doolittles orders for the fighters to abandon bomber protection in 1943 and seek out and destroy the German Air Force.
Escort fighter tactics Doolittle's major influence on the European air war occurred late in 1943 when he changed the policy requiring escorting fighters to remain with their bombers at all times, allowing fighter escorts to fly far ahead of the bombers' combat box formations in air supremacy mode. Throughout most of 1944, this tactic negated the effectiveness of the twin-engined Zerstörergeschwader heavy fighter wings and single-engined Sturmgruppen of heavily armed Fw 190As by clearing the Luftwaffe's bomber destroyers from ahead of the bomber formations. After the bombers had hit their targets, the American fighters were free to strafe German airfields and transportation on their return to base. These tasks were initially performed with Lockheed P-38 Lightnings and Republic P-47 Thunderbolts through the end of 1943. They were progressively replaced with the long-ranged North American P-51 Mustangs as the spring of 1944 wore on
They did a great job when they were mainly bombing targets but by the time they got to escort bombers the war was practically over and the Germans had almost no experienced fighters and some were even kids. I don't mean to take anything away from them but it is fact.
On 5:50 it was falsely reported that Brown shot down the first German jet. This was a bigger lie than the Tuskegee Airmen never lost a bomber. Brown was not the first to shoot down a German jet. The only jet he shot down was on March 24th.1945. The 8th. Army Air corp had already shot down over 60 German jets before that date. Moreover, on the day three Tuskegee Airmen shot down three German jets over Berlin raid on March 24, 1945, five other American pilots of the 31st. Fighter Group Fifteenth Air Force, on the same mission, with the 31st. Fighter Group, also shot down 5 German Me-262 jets. They included Colonel William A. Daniel, 1st Lt. Forrest M. @@keithjackson4985 I object to the mythology that has shrouded them. It is the soft bigotry of lowered expectations that just being a mediocre pilot is some sort of achievement worth glorifying. Let me ask you a question. Have you ever heard of the 761st Tank Battalion? They were an all black armored unit. Like the Tuskegee Airmen it was believed that black soldiers could not operate complex machinery and grasp the complexities of armored warfare. Not only did the 761st prove them wrong but they were ACTUALLY one of the most effective US armored units of WW2. When no other white generals wanted them Patten said give them to me. The battalion received a Presidential Unit Citation for its actions. In addition, a large number of individual members also received medals, including one Medal of Honor, 11 Silver Stars and about 300 Purple Hearts. The unit has been called "one of the most effective tank battalions in World War II. Do these American heroes EVER get mentioned? @@keithjackson4985 I am not saying they didn't have kills, they shot down over 100 enemy aircraft. However for every enemy aircraft they shot down one of their own was shot down. America's Ace of Aces Major Dick Bong....yes that was his name recorded 40 kills and 7 probable kills. He made ACE in less than two weeks of entering combat. All in the P-38 lightning. He would have had a lot more but the US Army Air Corp kept pulling him out of combat for months at a time out of fear he would be eventually shot down and it would be a huge propaganda win for the Japanese. This 6 minute short was as much if not more exciting than the whole feature-length film George Lucas produced about the Red Tails, funny that
We really need a remake of Red Tails.

I had the honor of meeting some of these men. Despite the ignorance of prejudice they served their country with distinction, and my understanding is never lost a bomber to enemy action. A hand signed artwork, hangs in my room, that I am proud to display in their honor.
The graphic designers & animation team do a Fantastic Job on these videos thank you guys & gals👍
Ya, like a video game without any credible historical evidence
Wow they have realistic eyes now? I’m impressed, the animation gets better every episode!
These guys are my heroes! Thanks so much for doing this for black history month. Maybe make it a yearly tradition, and do one for indigenous history month too. They have tons of cool stories as well, like the Navajo code talkers.
The contribution of Native American tribes to the War of 1812 is greatly overlooked. Chief Pushmataha of the Choctaw tribe for example actually went AGAINST Tecumseh and sided with the US, because he believed in peaceful coexistence with the settlers. He and his warriors were so skilled that they even fought the British later on beside regular American troops.
The animation in insanely good

Yarnhub, it is illegal to have such great animation, what the heck was that parachute scene?! It was INCREDIBLE!!
I honestly can’t comprehend how much this channel has improved in a year. Godspeed, Yarnhub!

@Jonathan Eanes hmmmm u sure? when 262 is piloted by competent pilot 51s are no match for them.
@@ussindianapolis487 Hmm yes, and when the P-51 pilot is better he wins, almost like skill matters huh
@@eldritchgod4308 Depends. The difference between the machines is so different it's without question that WHAT pilots fly matters just as much. It doesn't take a ton of discipline to not turn in the 262. And being the faster aircraft, they control the fight as they can engage and disengage on their own accord
Well done Red Tails. It's not the size of the fight that's in the dog, it's how awesomely the story can be told and animated for millions to see and appreciate.
It is remarkable that such detailed records were kept on both sides to enable the identification of who was shot down by which pilot.

The Tuskegee airmen are said to have had a higher percentage of successfully escorting more bombers back to base than any other fighter group in WWII.
1/2 true. Bomber losses under their watch were lower than the average (not by much they lost around 30 bombers under their escorts, the average was 35-40) but their were escort squadrons that lost fewer bombers on missions

I don’t think I need school anymore.
No heart, but it's true. Most things we tend to teach ourselves.
School is stuck in the industrial age made to just teach us on remembering things. We need school that better equips us to handle problems of the future.
If you want to educate yourself, school is the last place you should go. You just need to be open to education. Keep your mind, eyes, ears and arms open.
Love this. Appreciate this unit! Thankful they got their shot. They proved, they could do it. They deserved to be up there!
Actually when you look at their combat record the 332nd Fighter Group was one of the lowest performing fighter groups of the war. They didn't have a SINGLE pilot claim the title of ace, meaning he sot down 5 enemy aircraft. Their kill ratio was a pathetic 1-1.
@@Bellthorian Seriously dude! With the racism they had to face to even represent their country in combat? That's the point you bring up? What if their unit was created and allowed to fight at the same time as their white counterparts?
I believe in celebrating people for accomplishments...not the color of their skin.
@@Bellthorian I appreciate your opinions but I feel had these pilots been given a fair shot, they would have had many more kills and members would have attained the title, of ace. Thanks for bringing up the tankers. I vaguely remember that story.
Sadly he died the day the Atomic Bomb was dropped on Nagasaki test flying the P-80 shooting star when the fuel pump malfunctioned and his aircraft exploded.
KG 7: No!!! you cant do that we are superior in race and technology to you
Tuskegee airmen: haha P-51 go brrrrrr

The flying circus and a man from Prussia!
Yay I’m not the only mentally unstable individual
I love how it's told like a story, with seeming protagonists and backstory, but still doesn't irrationally look down upon the German side who were just as brave in many cases.
i mean you need some serious balls to go head on with 2000 enemy aircraft with a handful of me 262s
Couldn't have said it better.
Not to mention I think most of the German pilots were Christian, and other religions, as Adolf Galland stated that the Me-262 flew like angels were pushing it
Thanks for mentioning that. All German soldiers who did not belong to the Nazis simply fought for their country, no they had to. If they did not fight for their country there were only 2 options either option 1 flee with great risk of being caught and then option 2 go to the concentration camp to die.
