  • Captain Hilliard A. Wilbanks was piloting his Cessna Bird Dog as an FAC over the skies of Vietnam. When he saw American led Rangers walking into a trap set by the NVA and the Vietcong, he took it upon himself so hold back the onslaught. An incredibly brave act that resulted in a Medal of Honor.

The only thing as crazy is this I can think of is when one of our British airmen climbs onto the wing of a Lancaster to put out an engine fire with a handheld extinguisher then was shot by an enemy fighter is friends at The Love Guru his parachute was on fire but somehow he managed to Land rather safely and survived
yes you heard that right a man literally hung to the wing of a plane got shot at probably got set on fire and yet still lives although he was captured by the Germans and his plane that he was in was eventually shot down when his follow crew with being escorted through a German hospital they found their friend miraculously alive

I think this historical event might have been, at least in part, an inspiration to the Gene Hackman movie "BAT 21", where a pilot is shot down over Vietnam, and then gives coded radio messages involving golf course distances and layouts to Americans in an attempt to facilitate his own rescue.
The idea was that the Viet Cong would of course have no idea how American golf courses were laid out, so the messages were like "par 3, 8th hole" or the like, to indicate to American intelligence he was going 200 yards in one direction, followed by 100 yards in another, or whatever, once intelligence officers overlaid maps of the golf course with maps of the combat area, they were able to easily figure out his movements and where he wanted to be extracted.

My grandfather was a FAC with the 20 TASS in 1972. Thank you for doing this work so that the sacrifice these men gave will live on. RIP Capt. Wilbanks and, if I may, Capt Bennett (my grandfather.) Both MoH recipients and the only two FAC to receive the honor, if I'm not mistaken.
