They are currently spending a lot of money and effort regenerating the town centre so hopefully it will be looking better soon. I don't mind shopping there as it has a decent mix of shops for a small town, and it's just much less stressful than going into Manchester.

I was born and raised in Oldham but moved away in the Mid Sixties to the East Midlands. I think the city of Leicester is currently very depressing but looking at the content of this video can only comment - I probably did the right thing although I loved living in Oldham at the time.

A trip from the top of town, down Yorkshire St. to Mumps ... Haven't walked that path for a long time ... I do remember Mumps bus station wall from the top deck of a bus as a young lad ... There was a poem chalked on the wall which I still remember to this day ...
Behind the iron gates of fate
The seeds of time were sown
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who were known
    Knowledge is a deadly friend
    If no-one sets the rules
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools
Home of the "Tubigrip" people it used to say on Mumps Bridge ... I am one of those people ... Does anyone remember the tower club?

If you have lived nearby for long enough you may recall, When a bunch of Council employees were caught for taking bribes from a large local building firm but nobody lost their jobs or were prosecuted? The Saint Peter's centre, built in the middle of the town that consisted of a large tower block where most of the floors were never occupied from the day it was finished to when it was pulled down. Concrete shop bays that most were never occupied. Being on top of a hill, the wind howled through all the alley ways. A subway were most of the entry/exits were via very steep concrete steps where once you tripped you would tumble all the way to the bottom. The one entrance that was a sloping pedestrian walkway looked too much like a slip road and had a few cars driven down it into the subway. All of it demolished and filled in with no trace left after only being there a few years. I think we are still paying for it through our council tax for it to have been built until about 2030 and then we can start paying the demolition costs. Don't get me started on Batty's folly, the glass bridge built over the top of Manchester road. a million pounds was spent on a glass bridge' instead of just crossing the road on pedestrian crossing , using the glass bridge involved walking in the opposite direction for about 50 yards, then climbing stairs or a ramp up to about 60 feet above the road then crossing the bridge, which was about three times the width of the road, descending the steps or ramp on the other side and then walking the 50 yards back to the roadway pavement. I never saw a single person using this bridge to cross the road. Again it has been demolished with no trace of it or the costs of building or bribes paid and the costs of demolition were probably woven into the costs of putting tram tracks through Manchester road roundabout.

    • @scenicrouteyt

Oh wow, that’s awful. I had no idea about that!

The only problem with Oldham is there aren’t enough decent big stores to attract shoppers. It’s
    Like every other small
Town with one exception. It’s full of habitual moaners ! Anything positive is immediately criticised. The town is in the middle of regeneration at the moment and the changes looks promising. The naysayers are on the case already and haven’t a good word to say about it. . Encourage more artisan shops and a big name store would be a start. Be interesting to see the new

Goes with the useless Labour Council. It’s becoming the dustbin of Greater Manchester.
So sad to see this once busy towns demise.

It seems the Labour council and its 'shenanigans' has destroyed the town centre, Tommyfield Market and virtually everything else. Voting for independent parties will end all this. As a town, with some fine architecture (much tragically derelict and magnificent views, it has so much going for it. I left there after 10 years, determined to get out before the town was cut off from the main rail network when that damn tram was foisted on the town and the swift 15 minute train ride to Manchester beme a 35 minute ordeal.. Visiting a few weeks ago, I was appalled at the decline of the town.

I didn’t realise they cut off the rail network. That by itself would have a huge impact on the town, let alone everything else that’s happened

Looks like your there when the shops aren't even open....
Go to any town at silly o clock it will look deprived
Why not go on a weekend or evening time especially where the chicken shops are.. ..
Like it or not thats where the action is,people come from out of town for food here.....
And stop crying about the good old days and move on...
