  • A walk through Oldham, I really felt a sense of community from this small town. Walking through the market (not filmed) it was full of locals shopping at the locally ran stalls, the butchers and greengrocers. Not a common sight nowadays with the chains taking over. It was nice to see.
Definitely not the prettiest or best kept town I've visited but it felt nice to be there, even just for a short trip.
Oldham is a town in Greater Manchester, England, it lies amongst the Pennines on elevated ground between the rivers Irk and Medlock, 7 miles (11.3 km) northeast of Manchester. It is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, which had a population of 237,110 in 2019.
Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, and with little early history to speak of, Oldham rose to prominence in the 19th century as an international centre of textile manufacture. It was a boomtown of the Industrial Revolution, and among the first ever industrialised towns, rapidly becoming "one of the most important centres of cotton and textile industries in England." At its zenith, it was the most productive cotton spinning mill town in the world, producing more cotton than France and Germany combined. Oldham's textile industry fell into decline in the mid-20th century; the town's last mill closed in 1998.

A trip from the top of town, down Yorkshire St. to Mumps ... Haven't walked that path for a long time ... I do remember Mumps bus station wall from the top deck of a bus as a young lad ... There was a poem chalked on the wall which I still remember to this day ...
Behind the iron gates of fate
The seeds of time were sown
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who were known
    Knowledge is a deadly friend
    If no-one sets the rules
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools
Home of the "Tubigrip" people it used to say on Mumps Bridge ... I am one of those people ... Does anyone remember the tower club?

Oldham was one of the best places in 70s and 80s for shopping the good old days have gone along with the pub and free speech

Former mill towns are pretty much all in a bad way, nothing left to fill the void of manufacturing/textiles…been a slow and steady rot since the early 90’s

I have visited different parts of England mainly in the South and have not heard much positive things from Oldham.
I have been there many times visiting in laws around Greater Manchester area and in Oldham.
I’m from Helsinki Finland and I personally don’t think this look as bad as people say it does.

Looks like town planners of the past have done their worst. Glad to see St Mary’s, The Greaves Arms, Church Terrace escaped their clutches, and was that Barclay’s Bank at bottom of what was Lord Street still standing? Feel for the elderly in Oldham, lot’s of places to trip up on the beautification madness.
