Goats ARE your "Roots" and Refuge". You're just going home, Jess. Thx for always sharing your faith-filled authentic lifestyle. You're a wealth of wisdom, that I genuinely respect and appreciate. God bless you and yours too. ✌🏽
I think wanting your own little goat pen is like the gardeners who manage the gardens on large English estates and go home to their cottages where they have roses rambling up the cottage walls, sweet peas climbing fences and scattered hollyhocks swaying in the breeze. The Gardner’s love what they are doing and find gardening on a private , carefree scale restful and rejuvenating.......enjoy your little goat oasis Jess🙂
Having a partner that supports your dreams is so wonderful. I have talked for years about getting chickens because I love them and we could use the eggs. Then one day my husband decided that we should also do turkeys and I thought it would be productive to do geese. Then one day I asked him if I should give up on the chicken idea due to the other types of birds being more productive. He said no, because my enjoyment of what we are doing is important. It made me feel so loved. Can't wait to see your new goats!
Ugh, “romantic” farming. So good! So dreamy. I struggle to keep up with everyone’s new videos, blogs, Instagrams, etc., but I swear every time I take a minute to watch you or read Slowdown Farmstead’s essays, it feels like my soul’s being hugged. Thank yooou. 💚
I'm thrilled to hear that you can drink goat's milk & that you're getting goats again!! Your goat videos were a go-to resource for me before & after I welcomed my Nigerian dwarfs. I have to admit, I was pretty bummed when you rehomed your herd, but I'm excited to see what's next!! 🐐❤🥛
IF you’re not aware, Heather at Sage and Stone is a huge fan of yours, and has a beautiful, healthy herd you might consider - several breeds. She is so knowledgeable, and takes wonderful care of them!! I’m thrilled that you’ve found dairy that your body can tolerate!!
Your decision makes so much sense! You all went from a little homestead to a fairly big one so quickly. Yearning for the closeness of your own goats brings you back to your "small" dream. Love your channel.
I'm not surprised you feel this way about your garden. I enjoy creating content about gardening and cooking but there is something healing that happens when you do those things disconnected from a phone, laptop, what have you. I breathe deeper, pray and just enjoy. But, sharing what I'm doing brings me joy too. It's all a balance and I love that you're acknowledging your struggle. Hope the goats bring you a sense of connection and joy ❤
I started with 12 baby chicks years ago and now I have about 50 plus 8 guineas. We have bottle calves almost every year. I get what you mean about disconnected. I liked having 12 chickens because I knew which was which and were more like pets. I don’t help with cattle except the occasional twin or orphan. It’s nice to have your own piece of the farm! Almost like that walk in the garden with a cup of coffee.
You know what thought kept occurring to me listening to last week's podcast? How much I felt you missed your sweet little pink garden gate. This "news" you're sharing today is really an extension of that podcast, Jess. You ARE "a garden enclosed." You NEED to place a chair in it to rest and survey that protected lovely place within. A sanctuary to birth new dreams. Just like a bustling restaurant, the front of the house is where all the action, merchandising and business takes place. But the backyard is for respite. It's for hanging clothes on a line. It's for sitting with a cuppa, your journal and listening for the still small voice among the rustling leaves and morning bird song. I'm glad for you to see that sweet personal dream resurrected in the very midst of the much bigger corporate dream. May it richly bless you. ❤
I think you just identified for me what has endeared myself to our landscape even more this year: just for me elements. Thank you Jess! A gorgeous stone pot for flowers at the edge of a new fruit guild? Fall flower decor outside on a patio I can see from our kitchen sink (with dried flora from our garden)? Adding flowers to raised garden beds, more than needed for companion purposes? A whimsically painted birdhouse and beads dangling from macrame plant hangers? Bringing home 2 gorgeous stone pots from a nursery in the same area as a medical trip? God is so good and I am grateful for leading me to these touchpoints from Him, just for me. Thank you my Lord Jesus!
I think it's a great idea to keep something small just for you! I'm sure it is difficult to feel connected to everything on the farm when it is expanding so rapidly. I really appreciate that you do your best to show realistic timelines and decisions foe us 5o understand more. Nobody here will complain about some more goat content, haha. I totally understand that earthy, alive, greenhouse smell. One of the best smells there is. Thanks for sharing! I always love hearing your perspective. Until next time!
Oh my gosh, Jess. I feel so validated. These last 4 years have been so hard for our family. So much to surmount and overcome. And I'm drained and overwhelmed, and I feel so inept. We've owned our land for 3 years. We've set one pre-built shed but not managed to run electricity to it. We've dug a footer trench for the combination wellhouse and storm shelter. It's sat there through so many storms that it needs redigging and squaring up before we pour concrete. Three years,, and that's all we have to show for it! We're still debating on where to put the house! I ran into an old friend in Aldi yesterday. She said, Is your farm still a work in progress? I said, Well, it's a work; I don't know about the progress. I literally sobbed during this video. I watch other channels and feel like "normal" people would roll their eyes at the glacial speed that we cannot seem to get away from. You are the first person that has made me feel better about this. Thank you.
Yes! I thought goats too! It makes my heart happy. I love it. We have dairy goats, and I love watching other people with their goats. I'm so excited Jess!! ❤️🙏❤️🙏
If goats give you your bliss moments, Jess… regardless of their practicality… if you have room, can provide a safe, loving and healthy environment, DO IT! 😊 P.S. I enjoy watching your YT Channel, I have learned so much…. Thank you 💕 LOTS of thanks to you, your family and friends for all the hard work involved in making this content happen. …xx♥️xx… 🇦🇺
It's always good to have something that is just for you! I find myself letting my dream slip away, but have to realize things take time to build and when the time is right I will have my dream! We were going to try and build everything at one time, but started realizing it could get overwhelming, so we slowed down and are making sure we have everything in a good place and have the knowledge before we move on to the next thing.
Jess, it sounds like a blessed plan. It's mentally and physically healthy to have a place that's "your space". The scripture says "come aside and rest awhile". "Your space" is where you can find that. Thank you for sharing, it's encouraging to others.🙏❤️
No eye roll here, Sis. God's timing in everything and if there's one thing I have learned (older than you) never say never. God bless your plans & changes in direction and being real!
😂 I’ve had to eat my words many a time, but I’m sure everyone’s hearts jumped a beat of joy to think you could have a spotted black/white baby goat as a birthday present. I’ve recently had 4 pets pass (age related illnesses) and still have a number of animals on the homestead, but with all I do I know that God has something planned in the future. I’m doing the kitchen stuff, herbalism stuff, working full time, gardening year round, homestead barn critters, but what’s on the plan for 2024 is the anticipation. My husband and I are heading out on a 4 day road trip and I can’t help but feel like I should bring a carrier. 😂
I don't know the science behind it but I do know that a lot of people who can't drink cow's milk can tolerate goat milk. My Mama was born premature in 1950 when babies didn't have as great a chance for survival as they do now. I come from a very long line of farmers and when the doctors told my Grandparents and great grandparents that my Mom wouldn't survive my Great Grandfather refuse to give up and took her home and fed her goats milk. Not only did she live (obviously :) but she thrived and became a very robust and healthy child. I'm so glad you're able to enjoy dairy again and I'm so excited for you to have goats again. I absolutely adore mine!
Ok, I just sat down with my first cup of Beulah Coffee from Guatemala and I open YT and play this video. OMGosh, what a delightful pairing of Jess with her vision of having goats again and sipping this wonderful coffee! I thank you Jess for your visions! ❤
Yay Goats!! I totally respect your decision to change your mind. It's so important to be able to reassess things. Sometimes the heart just needs a couple of self care goats. 🐐 😉
Yay for new goats! Your goat happiness was always so bright. I'm proud of you for claiming a small project expressly for the purpose of feeding your soul.
You sharing your heart always brings tears to my eyes. You are such a beautiful person. Those that get to have you in their lives are so blessed. I’m glad to know goats are coming back to the farm since we will all benefit once again from your interaction with them as well as the care you give them! I bless you as well!
Hey Jess, Have you considered sheep milk? It has a very mild taste like cows milk but is usually tolerated by those with lactose intolerance. If you are getting a ram for you sheep it may be worth exploring. We have been milking one of our meat sheep as a trial.
I love that you take care of your needs and telling us about it. To live well you can't only focus on having new, bigger and more extrordinary things and projects to show your audience. Taking a step back and listening to yourself is essential to be abe to give others as much as you do. ❤🌻
So happy that you shared. I hope you get wonderful goats and a beautiful goat yard. I know it will be a challenge for Sweet Mia to keep the goat yard simple because he will want to make it a beautiful functional space for you to rest and enjoy. ❤
I also have done carnivore to heal and every time I try a little organic cream in my coffee my stomach says NO! Tried goat milk with no problems! Yea goats! Lol!❤ love goats!❤ Blessings!❤
Jess, thanks for dreaming out loud with us about something special that is just for you. I hope that goat’s milk remains tolerable for you and that this happens in a way that fulfills you and gives you that special solitude that feels joyful ❤
I don’t take this, the lease fit like complaining… Not at all!!! You just need a little corner of the Farm to ground You. Seriously you really make perfect sense. That little piece of woodsy area with two or three goats is how you keep yourself grounded, and connected to your homesteading Farm♥️👍🏼 🐐🐏🐑🐄🐃🐎🦙🐕🦃🦢🐈⬛🐈🐕🦺🐣🐓🐝🪱🐞 🐖🐂🐠🐟🦆🦉🪿🐱🦋
You have to listen to your heart voice. The connection with goats & routine of their care & milking is very grounding . Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the journey ❤
Yay!!! As soon as I saw your thumbnail I was quietly chanting - goats goats goats!! Oh, your creative romantic soul needs the smallness, the intimacy, the cottage home that a small (ish) herd of quirky, honery, loving goats brought you when your homestead was small, your home was small and your channel was the wee bitty thing I stumbled across.
😂 you almost didn’t flinch at the shot. 🤷♀️ country life/deer season. Lost our cold crops too. Froze a little harder than expected. But that’s alright. Thank you for being honest and real. Father, continue to bless this women as she stays true to You and helps shepherd so many.
Hi Ms. Jessica. As we age (gracefully) we also age ideologically. When my wife and I built our home we needed 4 bedrooms. ( four kids, 2 adults.) After Danielle lost her sight and the kids were already older we changed to 3 bedrooms and a beautiful, emergency out, patio, just in case of a fire and because Danielle was blind, she could find her way outside and to a safe place'. Our visions change and grow. God only knows what the future holds for our dreams. As a side note, I always loved your goats. btw: I was raised on goat's milk because I was allergic to all the other milks back in 1954, who knew? God bless your family.
I feel you, totally. I started out with a handful of Nubians, quickly turned into a full herd, then came soap making. I ramped up and made a business. While I am thankful for the way of life now, I long for those first days of the small dreams of Honey Springs Farm. Thanks for all you do Jess.
"We live in the country"...that deadpan look just busted me up! We have a shooting range about a mile away, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays we have an hour or so of gunfire. Freaks our visitors out, but we barely notice it. Can't wait to watch your new goat adventure! My little flock of hens are my special thing. They always cheer me! Blessings, Marie
I dont know how you can bring me to tears so easily, just casually talking to everyone. I find myself feeling so much of my younger self in so much of the things you say, only you've done life on a much bigger, wonderfully grandiose scale than I have, which is just awesome. Watching your videos the past several years has helped me through some really tough times. That being said, I am familiar with putting everyone else before yourself and I know its done unselfishly and with much love for those people. So, good for you taking something just for you! Its good for your soul and I dont know of many people who deserve that more than you do. Bless yourself. You bless so many people with so much of yourself, its your turn. ❤❤❤
It’s so great that you are listening to your needs. Whatever they are, big or small, they are your needs. You are a caregiver and an advocate, therefore you must care for yourself first so as to have a full well from which to give to others. If your well is dry then everyone feels it. So, good for you, Jess❣️
I’ve always admired how you and your family are able to scale-up everything you do. It can be so difficult and overwhelming, and that’s coming from someone who’s operations don’t even compare to what you guys are doing! I’m so happy to hear you are doing something simple for yourself that you find enjoyable. You deserve to have some peaceful milking time for yourself and get back to some of the simple roots of roots and refuge! Much love! ❤
Life has its seasons, and the season for goats has come around again. I’m so happy you are in a place where you are less overwhelmed. Moving, getting a new house set up, and starting a much larger farm are all individually overwhelming. Doing all of that with health issues is just impossible. You were wise to re-home the goats when you did. Now that things have settled, and you are healthier, it makes perfect sense to return to raising goats. I’m glad to hear you can tolerate goat’s milk. That alone is a good enough reason for keeping a small herd!
You impress me so much!! I admire your desire to show the vulnerability of you, the farm and the critters! It keeps it all so real !! Bless you.. Can’t wait to me your baby goats!❤️
Definitely a deer hunter... I live in the country, too. Putting meat on the table. You're making the right decisions. Yes, we all make mistakes, but that improves our next decision. Good decisions move you forward. Godspeed
In the middle of winter, when the days are dreary and cold and I'm feeling dreary and cold, I will visit our local garden center and walk through the greenhouse. The smell, the warmth, the aliveness all help me to remember how the cycle of the year will come around again.
Sometimes you have to reassess what you want and sometimes you realize what is important after it is gone. I’m looking forward to the return of the goats to Roots and Refuge Farm.
Thanks for sharing your heart & passions with us! I believe it encourages us all to dream & create! I’m excited to see what breeds you get! Blessings to everyone 🤗💗🇨🇦
Squealing with excitement right now as I’m getting ready for work!! I found your videos before I got my goats 3 years ago while I was researching how to care for them. Before I knew it I am chasing after the homesteading dream because you have greatly inspired me with both your lifestyle and your faith. Thank you so much for sharing this with us! My goats are my babies and I milked them for the first time this year! I am so excited for you and I cannot wait to follow along this journey. ❤
It’s good that you’re feeling the need to have something to keep you, you. You’re following God’s prompting for balance, and being practical. God bless you and keep you forever Jess. There’s millions of entrepreneurs but there’s only one telling us to let our waiting room be our classroom. Not that I feel your hard work to share with the world is insignificant , but I don’t want you to lose you in the process.
I had nubians when I was much younger and when i gave them up, because life got too busy, I regretted it for years. I couldnt even go into our barn without the heavy sadness. 10 years later and me in my 50s my hubby purchased 4 nigerian dwarf doe babies for my birthday. Im now in my 60s and I love their small size and your video helped me fall in love with them all over again. They are just for me and I hope to keep my barn and pasture a happy place for them and me for many more years.
Good for you, Jess 🙌🏼 They say that women are much more inclined to get autoimmune conditions because of how we tend to put others first (Gabor Maté). I have recently been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition (Hashimoto’s) and have also had to learn how to look after myself properly physically, spiritually and emotionally. Enjoy your new goats when they arrive! 🐐 I bless you! ☺️
I love this and can relate SO much! I can relate to this so much. I gave up a lot when we had our 3rd baby two years ago because I just didn't have the bandwidth. We still have a few of our goats, but haven't bred or milked them in two years. The other day while doing chores I realized how much I miss that "me time" I get with my goats when I milk. It's so meditative. I talked with my husband and we decided to breed a couple of our girls so I can go back to milking this spring. I'm so excited! I can't wait to see you guys build the infrastructure and get your goats when you're ready. ❤❤
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW EXCITING! I LOVE YOU WITH GOATS AND I'M SO SO HAPPY YOU WILL DO THIS AGAIN!!! I have 5 Nigerian dwarf goats and we are hoping to breed this winter for Spring babies! So excited! I could glean so much from you in this process! The 1st goat video I saw of you was when you had to help your doe and bring her babies inside and keep them warm and bottle feed. I just fell in love with your soul and how much you cared for them. You were emotional and just lovely. I love you Jess and I wish I could meet you in person some day!
Goats ARE your "Roots" and Refuge". You're just going home, Jess. Thx for always sharing your faith-filled authentic lifestyle. You're a wealth of wisdom, that I genuinely respect and appreciate. God bless you and yours too. ✌🏽
Beautiful message.
God is good all the time.Jess and Miah are awesome to learn from and God has blessed them.
Yes!!
Yes. I just love this for you, Jess 💛💛

As soon as I saw the title I said “she’s totally going to get goats again!”. So exciting 🙃
Me too! I thought "goats!?"
Me too!
Me too haha!
I did too! That was my first thought when I saw the thumbnail pop up!
Yeah, right!!

Jess’s personal journal/diary goats. It’s sweet. I’m glad you are wanting to do something small just for you. Love it.
Your baby goats made me smile. Hope you get them back. 😊I vote for goats with pajamas 😊
Your decision makes so much sense! You all went from a little homestead to a fairly big one so quickly. Yearning for the closeness of your own goats brings you back to your "small" dream. Love your channel.

I have to agree. Goats are such sweet hands on animals. They 100% say family farm to me.

I just got my first bag, can't wait to try it! But I'm getting a pour over setup before I try it.
@@steveegbert7429 I only do pour over and you will not be disappointed. Enjoy
I'm glad the goats milk works well for you and your dream is waking up in you fervently . It makes me smile for you with a joyous heart.
Goats are so lovely and funny. Good on you for following your heart .

I’m so glad to hear you’re going to have goats again! I know how much you loved them and, more importantly, you’ll have milk!
I'm happy for you. I have missed the simple. I love the little farm Jess because we see your joy and happiness more in that.
Part of the life you lead is having the freedom to choose your own path. It also means you get to change your mind…. A person’s prerogative 😊

I looove the smell of the greenhouse!! That gives me summer in the winter! It is meditation in itself to me. ❤
So happy that you shared. I hope you get wonderful goats and a beautiful goat yard. I know it will be a challenge for Sweet Mia to keep the goat yard simple because he will want to make it a beautiful functional space for you to rest and enjoy. ❤
This is a G-d wink to you. Goats for your health and the health of your family. He’s preparing you for the storm to come that you know is coming. ❤🙏🏼
Goats just fill a space in your heart, I miss mine.
I also have done carnivore to heal and every time I try a little organic cream in my coffee my stomach says NO! Tried goat milk with no problems! Yea goats! Lol!❤ love goats!❤ Blessings!❤
So happy to hear. I always associated Roots & Refuge with goats!
Sweet Jess, I say follow your dreams while you're young, and capable. This is your life, live it the way you invisioned. ❤

You have to listen to your heart voice. The connection with goats & routine of their care & milking is very grounding . Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the journey ❤
I LOVE that you want to be more CONNECTED to the farm in a hands on way! So excited for you all!
Soap making is -so- much easier than you think it is, truly. It's amazing.
❤ I'm happy for you Jess... and looking forward to seeing goats again. In God's timing blessings abound.
I love it!!! I’m all about goats too and couldn’t imagine life without them!
A little something just for you sounds wonderful ♥️
I just want to know who else knew raising was for goats before even clicking on it. All I needed was the title! 💕
I love this for you guys!
Yay for goats again ❤
You impress me so much!! I admire your desire to show the vulnerability of you, the farm and the critters! It keeps it all so real !! Bless you.. Can’t wait to me your baby goats!❤️
Every tiny creative heart needs its sweet satisfaction, too. Go for it.
Love verbal “mind mapping” your wants and dreams. 😊
I love hearing you talk about doing something FOR YOU! That is awesome and so exciting. 🥰
Definitely a deer hunter... I live in the country, too. Putting meat on the table.
You're making the right decisions. Yes, we all make mistakes, but that improves our next decision. Good decisions move you forward. Godspeed
Definitely a wonderful plan to have your Goaties!
Goats!!! I'm so happy you are getting goats again. For purely selfish reasons just because I love them so much but I'm also happy for you.
your words, as always, are clear and make it easy to understand. Goats bring you to your 'roots' embrace it! Enjoy it!
I'm dying😂😂😂 we live in the country..so matter of fact. Excited that goats milk agrees with you. Your goaties will love you❤
Jessica, I’m so happy for you that you can have a small thing just for you. 💖💖💖
glad to see you have garden cats again
In the middle of winter, when the days are dreary and cold and I'm feeling dreary and cold, I will visit our local garden center and walk through the greenhouse. The smell, the warmth, the aliveness all help me to remember how the cycle of the year will come around again.
You bring JOY to so many. Jesus, Others and Yourself. Love seeing you pursuing something for yourself.
Who knew. Having goats is romantic. 😁May your dreams come true.
Yay!! I love that you are having goats again 😍
I saw the title and thought goats. If they make you happy, Go for it, why not? That woods area is perfect!
Everybody needs something that is all theirs.
Good for you, Jess 🙌🏼
They say that women are much more inclined to get autoimmune conditions because of how we tend to put others first (Gabor Maté).
I have recently been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition (Hashimoto’s) and have also had to learn how to look after myself properly physically, spiritually and emotionally.
Enjoy your new goats when they arrive! 🐐
I bless you!
Slow and steady fits me, also. I function better when I’m thoughtful when considering new projects. Follow your heart and dream.
I think that is a lovely idea. You have the means and the land, thanks to Papa T, so go for that simple dream so we can dream along with you!
