I so love this Jess. People wonder how I only spend about $100 - $150 a month at the grocery store. We eat what we grow. It is what it is. We’re older, we have no kids. We don’t eat as much as we used to. I make my own tortillas. I make my own bread. We grown our own vegetables. I make my own tomato sauce. Etc. I cannot make my own toilet paper. I do not make my own shampoo or laundry soap, yet. That’s about all I spend money on.
@@donna1018 probably premade stupid stuff like frozen pizza or veggies in a box? Homemade pizza is so much better! I totally get it if you cannot grow your own food but darn it. At least grown your own herbs….those can be done on a windowsill. Right? There’s always a way to save a buck, somewhere….
The giddy look on your face when you remember that you sre drinking your own coffee. That you have a coffee roasterie. ☕️ I love seeing you bring your goals to fruition. I can't wait to taste your coffee! Hopefully, in person, one day!
Roosters learning to crow make me laugh!! I could not agree more with your comment around the brussel sprouts and have said it for some time now - folks are not used to the "if we don't have it and can't make it, we do with out". Not being able to do without is the biggest set back to living this life style. However, it can be learned and challenges such as this will help. Your teachings are also doing lots for changing things one plate, one person, one garden at at time! Well done Ma'am!
Guinea fowl are also fantastic at keeping the tick population down! We need a follow up; I'm betting that Miah didn't put them in there, and they flew in to be with the chickens. ;) And Avocado kitty relentlessly going after your love reminds me of God chasing after us. Also, Fern has the most boopable nose! I love it!
I loved THIS VIDEO! Sometimes the ones with no actual point ( your words) are the best. It's so much more on a personal sit and chat level!! You make us feel more like friends visiting! Thank you!!
I was scouring the internet, as you call it, for a long time about growing most of our fresh produce and eventually got going by also challenging myself. My husband thought he had to rent a skip to get rid of the limbs and trunk of the camphor tree that was already covering half of our backyard in shade when he cuts it down. Right then I said that I should rather use it to build terraced veg garden beds. Well, this week I have sown the starts for the finished beds. Now to save those starts from the snails when they go into the beds. Hunting them now most early mornings and late afternoons to reduce their numbers before planting.
I love that you’re doing this! I do the pantry challenge in January with Jessica @threerivershomestead and every time it just grows me so much! I’d like to do a few months in 2024. I’m your age and have a 19 and 14 year old. One thing they both absolutely LOVE in their lunches are yogurt parfaits and smoothies. I make yogurt in the instant pot. Then make a fruit sauce by throwing some frozen berries in a pot with a bit of water. Cook down and smash. Sweeten with maple syrup or honey. Then thicken with a bit of arrowroot or cornstarch. It doesn’t water down the yogurt this way. I make the simple living Alaska recipe for chewy granola (you can google it) and pack it on the side so it doesn’t get mushy. I make a bunch of smoothies at a time and freeze in mason jars. Take one out in the morning and it will act as an ice pack in the lunch and be thawed by lunchtime. These are probably things you either have access to on the farm or in your stores so maybe can do on your challenge! Ps I love my Beulah coffee!! 💕
I love this way of thinking. I love growing vegetables so that at least during the winter, I won't have to buy so many fresh or frozen groceries. I try to bake breads and bagels every so often, so I don't have to buy so many. It makes me excited to at least see my grocery list rather short. It makes me feel accomplished and happy.
I'll admit that I never really saw myself as a "cat person", until our first farm kitty found her way to us. It will be 2 years in February that we've had her. She holds my heart, shes so sweet and so goofy💛
For those of us who- because of space/land limits - don't provide all of our produce or meats, it is a very good alternate challenge to have NO WASTE on what is already in our pantries and freezers period. :)
A few years ago I decided to only buy ingredients and make everything from scratch that I can. I'm so good at it now! Every month I have a project, next month it's sour cream. I've become a really good cook as a result. Because I live alone I give a lot of food away. I'll make blueberry muffins and put half in the freezer, give my neighbors a quarter and eat a quarter of them. I wanted to have a variety of foods and condiments like I would if I bought groceries. I'm able to do that now. I buy bulk and dehydrate or can it. I even make no churn ice cream and soda! My life is richer, my diet is better, my health is better. I have a small garden every year but I am never going to be able to raise all of my food. But I absolutely can afford great food by making everything myself.
My neighbor’s 3 roosters have adopted me. They roost in my trees and basically undo everything I do lol. I call them the Backstreet Boys, they’re always fighting! When I see them I sing “the boys are back in townnn” 🎶 They may end up in a pot of dumplings or chicken & sausage gumbo. Just kidding! I pretty much have them trained to shhhhh 🤫 Yes! I’m hooked on chocolate again, been eating sugar and bread. The pain and inflammation is outrageous. Challenge accepted! I’m going back on AIP. You’ve inspired me and I’m going to do the whole meal prep thing and freeze portions so I don’t have to cook every day. I rather work outside unless it’s raining. I find that I’m always hungry when not on AIP. My body wants good, real nutrition. So where did you leave your coffee cup Chicky? ☕️
I quit buying bread 4 to 5 years ago. Can't handle the chemicals in it. Have a good bread maker. My shoulders are bad so can't knead bread anymore. So use that and make sour dough off and on. Don't have the area to grow lots and not even allowed to have chickens anymore. So Have to buy some things. But buy as little as possible and Do can things I buy in bulk. I think your challenge is a great idea!
Thank you for this! I can completely relate to the aging child dilemma. My one and only daughter turned 18 in July. It blows my mind at how fast the last 18 years have gone. It’s unreal. ❤❤ much love to you momma Jess.
I’m so weird, I work my butt off preserving the harvest and every time I open a jar I panic thinking, I’m going to use it all up! Of course that’s what it’s for silly girl…I tell myself. Trying to avoid the grocery store has been something we’ve tried doing more of for various reasons-cost, health, challenging myself to cook more interesting meals using my Garden Bounty. I fall into just making the same thing over and over and challenges like yours really helps to break out of the rut.
Over the summer one of your videos (can’t remember which) inspired me to set a goal to eat something that we grow everyday. This really helped me use our harvest to the fullest! Even if some days it ended up just being herbs it made me feel so good and took the pressure off that comes along with growing food sometimes. Congrats on six weeks!!
I live in NC and my banana plants finally succumbed to the cold. I mulch in winter and they come back in the spring. On a side note I like Guinea hens, but the rascals are l-o-u-d.
Oh Kitten George, he was an awesome harden kitty. I think many of us were broken hearted when he passed away. I am glad to see Avacado stealing your heart.
Thank you Jess! Iʻm a very new gardner and iʻm so in love with the progress and watching my babies grow from seedlings to harvest time. This morning was the first harvest of some spinach and italian kale for my morning smoothing. I am so grateful and humbled and no doubt tickled. But more so, how much money I saved with this morningʻs smoothies. And everything in my garden is organic. Just blowing my mind and dancing all at the same time! I love watching your videos Jess! I love finding like minded beautiful humans on our beautiful mother earth🙂.
We started sending dinner leftovers for school lunches and it has gone well. Even the teachers commented on how creative we were and that we did a good job. Made me feel good. 🥰
It’s so weird that I just got done watching Simple Living Alaska getting their chicken coop all ready for winter. There’s already lots of snow and below zero temps. Then I put you on and here you are with your dress on and you chickens have it made!
Not at pantry challenge level yet but I do try and have food I grew here with every lunch and supper. I also try to stretch the time between grocery trips each week. So far 2 weeks is about my limit because of yogurt and breakfast fruit. Kitten george was such a darling cat. He will always be remembered and loved but I am glad Avocado was able to sneak into your heart!
I've been subbed to your channel for a long time, but just recently rediscovered you...your videos have been my refuge from the dreary news these days. I appreciate you sharing your life and activities on your beautiful property...it's so refreshing. I wish I lived closer to my own remote 11.25 acres, but it's a drive!
I got a load of 17 cubic feet of free cedar chips yesterday. I am trying to sequester carbon and restore my ecosystem. I got them free from chip-drop and by this morning the pile was steaming, so I spent most of the morning deconstructing the pile and spreading out the chips. Sometimes we get to have these little unscheduled interludes with nature. It changes perspective and teaches us gratitude for the little things. God bless your family. I hope you have a great holiday.
Jess, I absolutely love especially first thing in the morning, or at the end of the day after dinner in the evening, when you just pick up the camera and take us with you 🌻 Kinda starts my day or relaxes me at the end of the day. But anytime a day any day as a perfect time for roots and refuge video❣️❣️❣️💝💞🥰😘😘😘😘 Gracias Jess always ♥️
You're absolutely right, Jess. Straw is the by-product of threshing cereal grains, hay is dried grass, essentially. And it has weeds, but lots of nutrients, so you had it totally right. I'm so glad to hear you're getting goats again, because it's milk you can drink, and it's for you. I always love listening to you, and Avocado is a beauty kitty. Unlike Morgan, I am a cat person, ha ha!
You are so inspiring ❤️ I am a brand new sourdough baker and have 2 loaves under my belt. It has been so exciting and rewarding! While I hope to eventually grow most of my own produce, it has been a slow process with many failures. Compared to gardening, baking bread felt like immediate gratification! 😂 I’m going to participate in the challenge by not buying any bread from the store for the rest of the year! 🦩🌺
Hey Jess….you can cook the Brussels sprouts leaves and they taste just like Brussels sprouts. In Arkansas it’s difficult to get them to grow the little baby cabbage looking parts but slice those leaves thinly and cook them; you’ll never wait for baby cabbages again! 😄
Do you have trouble getting the sprouts because it gets too hot too early in the season? One technique I've learned with Brussels Sprouts is to top them (by snapping off the top growth) once they begin to show those baby sprout leaves and it will force the plant into sprout production! :)
@@mamaearth35 yes, it goes from the end of winter right into the heatwave of summer many years. Not much grace given to those little Brussels sprouts. I’ve not heard of this method but it’s worth a try. I saw a documentary years ago showing a Farmers Market in the New England states and it showed the produce on the tables, one of which was what looked like a stack of leaves, neatly bound by a ribbon or string. It was said that those were Brussels sprouts leaves. When my plants only produced leaves I took that opportunity to cook the leaves, slicing them thinly and sautéing them. They tasted fabulous; just like Brussels sprouts only in a different form. Thanks for the information on topping the plants!
@@shesatitagain234 I'm so glad you found a way to enjoy them, because it is such a delicious plant! I ran a market farm in Alaska for a couple years and pruning them was the only way we could get the sprouts before winter -- they are such a long season crop! Now I'm in the South (Alabama) and if my current garden conditions permitted I would try overwintering them. Anyways -- the joys of gardening! It's such a fun adventure every year to see what works! ;)
Do you just do a few leaves per plant at a time? Or wait til the brussel sprouts are mostly developed and then harvest the leaves? Can you harvest the br.sprouts prematurely? Also - what abt the stalks? #inquiringMindsWanttoKnow
Jess -- to get Brussels Sprouts by Thanksgiving try topping your plants! You can prune the top growth off (and those parts are edible, too, of course!) and that will encourage the plant into sprout production! ;)
We keep the wasps around because they're fantastic bug control. The vast majority of paper wasp nests haven't bothered us, even when working right beside them. If we do have an aggressive nest, like with your hive, then we just eliminate that one. I love my little waspy friends
Additional benefit of sheep would be processing their wool. I do wool felting and surprised how popular it’s becoming. I think crafters love using local locks.
I made a small grocery list this morning that included garlic bread. You just reminded me that I have a full loaf of homemade bread at home that I can make garlic toast with! I've been working on shifting my mindset on a few things so I think I'll challenge myself as well...no store bought bread/rolls/buns for one month (to start!!) ❤
Oh Jess, the way you say Ranonkulas reminds me of the made up word Ridonkulous😜 and I think it every time you say it which happens to be a lot! What a lovely cherry blog with your 30 free minutes and a garden kitty, the sunshine and your light heart☀️✨
I have a couple of garden goals - to get a year’s supply of basics (garlic, onions, potatoes), and to eat only what is in season or I’ve canned. I’m getting married in the Spring to a knowledgeable gardener, so it will be fun to see how we do! I’m so looking forward to my new life on the farm, with a loving partner, and getting chickens again!
Zucchini is learning how to love, my stray cat does the same thing with biting. She has now decided your her friend in other words, and she has decided she likes being petted. My cat is working on not biting hard, there mothers bite to show them affection, and learning. Just my 2 cents. Love your show.
I have been housebound due to an injury since the middle of September, so Friends go grocery shopping for me and the upside and downside are the same. Nobody buys me sweet treats so that keeps me healthy. I eat more yogurt and salad and that sort of thing since I’ve been in the house. Another upside is that it helps on my grocery bill because I have to write down what I want they get it and then it might be, maybe another week before somebody goes shopping for me so it really helps on the bill. Thank you for being you, and always being so open you are appreciated more than you know Jess.
I was just thinking of Kitten George yesterday when I took one of the feral kittens to the vet yesterday. Such sweet things, our random barn and feral kittens. Love them.
This was the perfect vlog for me. I am truly in my waiting room. I have a small garden at home and I have been gardening in a make shift garden at my work/church. But I have been blessed with a grant for the garden at school and I want to make the most of the $500 from the grant to improve the current space. Where do I start looking for the most cost effective way of using the space and replacing the deteriorating 'raised' gardens I am currently using???
I love the hang out videos Jess. I'm happy to hear that you decided to get goats again. I pray that you find exactly the right ones, and they make your heart happy. Be so blessed!
I remember Kitten George, he was a cool soul. I was so sad yet proud of your ability to do the vlog when he was gone. I don't blame you for closing your heart.
One slightly weird option for those school lunches...when my kids were that age, they didn't really like sandwiches. But they needed something to give them the protein of the cold cuts or peanut butter of a sandwich. Then one day after a party, we had some leftover deviled eggs and I thought: eggs are protein and deviled eggs just have mayo & mustard like a sandwich does....so I packed up several of them for each child as their 'sandwich' (we had lovely tupperware-like sandwich boxes that kept them un-squished). The kids loved them so much, they had deviled eggs for their 'sandwich' most days for years. I'd make up a large batch on the weekend and parcel them out into each lunch for the week.
Kitten George was in the very first video I watch on your channel. It was so sad when he passed. RIP little ginger kitty. I commented on a video a couple of weeks ago that Avocado is Kitten George reincarnated. Lol.
Avocado kitty! Thank you for highlighting the felines on your farm. She's such a pretty little stinker :) I've got an adolescent DLH girl who is a biter, too.
Pam here….love your challenge. As a kid I hated sandwiches for lunches. Can do left over casseroles, pasta salads with meats, cold slice of meatloaf with lettuce or cheese. Ham and your homeade cream cheese rollups, with sundried tomatoes and such mixed in. Apples, carrots with peanut butter, jerky, freeze dried fruits…hheee…making me hungry!!
Ho Jess, I received my order of Beulah Coffee today in the ail. I can't wait to try it. I ordered teas too. I saw that you signed the enclosed sticker with your name and I felt happy and sweet. I've been watching you for years. I'm happy to share your experiences and I'm growing a beautiful suburban garden because of you ❤️
I just about FREAKED OUT. I clicked on one of your videos and started to scroll down and… what!? There were only 3! I was like, oh know is she getting rid of all the old videos!!???? Turns out it was your new channel!! So excited!
My eldest turned 18 this summer and I believe you and I are the same age(I had that first baby at 19 years old). It is definitely a big change to see your baby become a man! Solidarity to you 🤍
I love this vlog! We essentially did something similar while we were harvesting loads of produce from our garden and eggs from our tiny flock of chickens. We are not to the point of being able to completely cut out produce from the grocery or farm stand, but we are certinaly buying a lot less. Our challenge is to grow more. We are adding containers to our growing space, so we are looking forward to growing more.
I have grown and preserved more food this year than ever before. But I am definitely in the group of "I can't use this because then I won't have it anymore!" You've inspired me to use the delicious food I've worked so hard on and to grow my skills to remove other foods from my grocery trips. Totally off topic, but I love the dress you're wearing and I just realized how perfectly it goes with your tattoo!
Three Rivers Homestead does something similar during January and February. Her exceptions are birthdays and special occasions. I've been doing this with her because it helps me use my food and not panic because there are a few empty jars.
Yes! We’ve done this a few times and absolutely love it!! It really helps make you creative with your food, plus opens your eyes to what you need to grow.
My fave kitty snuck up on me too. I wasn’t into her and she preferred my husband. Then she got sick and I was devastated. I took care of her and now I’m her person and she’s ❤.

Compared to gardening, baking bread felt like immediate gratification! 😂 I’m going to participate in the challenge by not buying any bread from the store for the rest of the year! 🦩🌺
Congratulations on the bread.
Blessings all
@@MsBetsyLu Thank you!

I remember kitten George, he was such a cute little guy. I remember when he passed. I’m so sorry you lost him.
We have loved our St Croix sheep that we bought from Karen and Jim Fogerty at Cross Key Farm near Ft. Payne, AL. They are large, rugged, and docile.
I seriously miss kitten George. Love the now cats too but man oh man I really loved him. 😢
I had my first cup of Dark Roasted Buelah coffee yesterday morning and oh my!! It was heaven in a cup.
I do that with the outer cabbage leaves, broccoli leaves, and brussel sprouts leaves. Yummy!!!
You can prune the top growth off (and those parts are edible, too, of course!) and that will encourage the plant into sprout production! ;)
We love you too Jess! ❤️🙏🌹
Jess’ genuine excitement about her own coffee in her cup made my heart happy!
We keep the wasps around because they're fantastic bug control. The vast majority of paper wasp nests haven't bothered us, even when working right beside them. If we do have an aggressive nest, like with your hive, then we just eliminate that one. I love my little waspy friends
Nice chatting with you. Happy Birthday to Jackson. Enjoy your brother and his while they are there. LY❤
Additional benefit of sheep would be processing their wool. I do wool felting and surprised how popular it’s becoming. I think crafters love using local locks.
Thank you for letting us walk the farm with you tonight!
Thank you Jess, for the walk on your beautiful farm.
You make me laugh. I love Avocado kitty too!
Love drinking your coffee every day ❤
Oh Jess, the way you say Ranonkulas reminds me of the made up word Ridonkulous😜 and I think it every time you say it which happens to be a lot!

I remember kitten George, a little grey fluffy bundle of cuteness. I'm really hoping the goats are good for your dairy allergy.
Love them.
Every time I see all the animals my heart just melts ❤
This was the perfect vlog for me. I am truly in my waiting room. I have a small garden at home and I have been gardening in a make shift garden at my work/church. But I have been blessed with a grant for the garden at school and I want to make the most of the $500 from the grant to improve the current space. Where do I start looking for the most cost effective way of using the space and replacing the deteriorating 'raised' gardens I am currently using???
I love your ‘just hang out’ videos ❤
Sounds like Avocado is a sleeper agent sent by Kitten George ;) Striking you with affection at the precise moment you'd be open to it again.
Kitten George was in the very first video I watch on your channel. It was so sad when he passed. RIP little ginger kitty. I commented on a video a couple of weeks ago that Avocado is Kitten George reincarnated. Lol.
What a lovely video! It was so nice to see you so happy! Not that you’re not happy most of the time!
Jess on the cute scale the long ears win every time - Brahmin cattle calves have the long huge ears too and I melt every time I see them
I absolutely love mini LaManchas
My face hurts from smiling!!!! 😁😊🥰😁
Loved this video. I enjoy the conversation and seeing the animals. Always brightens my day. Thank you.
What a lovely way to end my day, a walk in the garden with my favourite u tuber!
All the best Jules 🌷👍🌈
This excercise is also so good for the planet...no fossil fuel transport to eat out of season food.
Avocado kitty! Thank you for highlighting the felines on your farm. She's such a pretty little stinker :) I've got an adolescent DLH girl who is a biter, too.
You, Ben, and Kitten George every video . I remember
I enjoy your casual walks and chats😃!
It's fitting alvacado took awhile too establish a connection. That way your garden knowledge is respected also.
Solidarity to you 🤍
I would love to have some guineas. I'm told they are hard to keep alive. I love hearing their alert call😊😮😅 neighbors had some but they moved.
I've been doing this with her because it helps me use my food and not panic because there are a few empty jars.
crazy weather here too. It was 87 on Sunday and now we have 5 nights of freezing temps again Wed-Sat.
I love my cats. Cats have personality and they do pick a person to be their favorite.we love u Avacado.
Goats are funny and clever.
