  • The Messenger dives straight into its narrative in the title menu, before even starting the game, so we may as well start there too. In short, the story revolves around a clan of ninjas who must prepare for their inexorable conflict with the demon army, while also awaiting the arrival of a legendary hero from the west.
Upon starting the game, we find ourselves in control of one of the ninjas. Bored with training and unconcerned by the prophecies regarding the demon army, this particular ninja has developed a reputation as a lackadaisical slacker. But of course, just as he's assuring his master that there's no reason to take the threat of the demon army so seriously, there's a sudden attack. Most of the ninja clan is immediately wiped out, and our hero charges forth to face off against the demon king. Just then, the hero from the west arrives, and repels the invaders. The demon king and his general retreat, vowing to finish the job later.
The hero from the west informs the ninja that he has a very important job: to cross the island, and deliver a message to the three sages at the summit of Glacial Peak. It is at this point that the character becomes the titular "Messenger" which is what I will refer to him as from now on. As The Messenger. Which also happens to be the name of the game. So don't get confused, because there's The Messenger, the guy, and The Messenger, the game, and I'm expecting you to use context clues and inference to understand which of the two I'm talking about at any given time. I have faith in you. Well, some of you.
So anyway, that's how the journey begins.

The retro styled modern games are such a gift to us who love that nostalgia.

A great video. I don't really know what else to say, so I am just making this comment in hopes that it feeds the Eldritch horror that is the RUclips algorithm and convinces it to show the video to more people.

A minor correction: at the beginning of the Visual section, you mention that the graphics of The Messenger call back to the 8- and 16-bit forebears of the NES and SNES. It's actually meant to evoke the Genesis, and specifically the Shinobi games. The same is true of the audio: RDE composed the 8-bit soundtrack using Famitracker, and the 16-bit soundtrack using Deflemask. Fun bit of trivia: it should be possible, at least in theory, to reproduce the soundtracks on actual hardware!
A minor technical note: for the sequence in Quillshroom Marsh beginning at 8:30, it sounded like you were fighting with the BGM. It was only that part, oddly.
I loved this. It was a really good retrospective/deconstruction!

Thats really interesting, didn't know about the audio production being that closely tied to the actual pieces of hardware that the game calls its roots from.

That's a super interesting bit of trivia, thank you so much for sharing!
As far as the audio issues, I actually had a week-long and painstaking fight with the vocal track that I had to deal with in excruciating detail, so I'm actually somewhat relieved it only ended up being noticeable in one section.

Oh, hey! Someone else who loved Sea of Stars and played the Messenger after because of it! I find the connection between the two wild on a surface level, they seem so different, but there's a lot of good lore, I'm all about that shit

I've been meaning to check out that lore video that explores all the connections but it's all text with no voice over so it's less accessible. Would love to talk about both games if you're interested, though!
