    Great video! For some people the size of the house you are trying to cover will come into play. Say you have a 5,000 square foot house (and assume for now that you're going all wireless; no wired backhaul) then the Eero 6 Pro 3 pack wins. It's $600 versus the Orbi 2 pack at $700. The Orbi suffers ever so slightly in range tests and I honestly feel like a 2 pack is cutting it close for 5,000 square feet.
    I'm probably biased though. I jumped from Eero to Orbi a few years ago when the Orbi first hit the market. I was BLOWN AWAY by the improvement in speeds. The Orbi was awesome. But then came some serious firmware problems. The system would constantly crash and reboot. Turns out it was an issue with Google devices (my pixel was causing it) but the Eero firmware was smart enough to handle the issues that Google was causing. Orbi's customer service throughout the whole ordeal was abysmal. The forums were a mess of angry people! Hopefully they've improve dramatically since then but It's going to be hard for me to go back.
    I'm closing on a new house this week and I'll likely be upgrading my existing Eero Pro system to Eero Pro 6 (3 pack). I'll keep some of my existing Eero beacons to supplement if necessary but I think the 3 pack will more than cover what I need (roughly 4,500 square feet).
    Anyway man - really great stuff you're doing with these mesh router reviews. Your range of tests are thorough and super informative. The BIG benefit in all these systems is the dedicated wireless backhaul channel (like on the Orbi and the Eero Pro 6 devices). That dedicated channel is what enables the faster speeds. Without that you lose a little speed on every hop from the main router.

      Thanks for the feedback and your experience! It’s good to know the history of products, my Orbi has been working fine but I plan on keeping both the eero Pro 6 and Orbi and swap them weekly to see which one will do better long term. If I run into firmware issues, I will be sure to relay that info as you have. Congrats on the house! and I think you’ve made the right decision with the eero Pro 6 based on your previous experience and the fact that you can add more eero beacons if needed, granted the pro 6 3 pack might be enough as you mentioned.

    Thank you for the review. I gave up on the eero pro 6 after 1 week of trying to optimize it for my setup. I've done a lot of rebooting, customer service etc. My speed is fast but multiple times a day, it would slow down to a crawl. Now I'm on the orbi rbk50. The older model with wifi 5. Couldn't be happier.

    • @landpet

      No worries, I haven't had any issues with either one but the Orbi does seem to be faster, so far I'm using that one.

      You can't go wrong either way but I recently made a video (not posted yet) comparing 5 mesh wifi systems to each other and in that video I picked the Orbi as the winner. Honestly it's a tough decision, they're both good, eero gets slightly more coverage and Orbi gets slightly better speeds so I picked the Orbi as the winner.

    Great WiFi review as usual. Very strange on 2 Eero Pro 6's wirelessly connected and the AC speed dropping that much. Probably another firmware will be rolling out to fix that. I ordered the Eero Pro 6 set based on your earlier reviews as I intend to use them where they are wirelessly connected and then use ethernet for a PC and PS4. The router should be 30-50 ft away from the access point. I'm hoping to get max speeds or close to it like you did. Thanks for all that you do. It makes buying this stuff easier without having to deal with returns. Hopefully...LOL

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 года назад +1

      LOL! I think you'll get pretty good speeds for your PC and PS4 based on what you said. Yeah hoping they will release an update to take care of the AC devices. Eero Pro 6 hands down is amazing and so is the Netgear Orbi, honestly a tough decision between the two. Eero Pro 6 seems like a better value because of the lower price.

    Great reviews as always- interesting to see you choose the mid range Orbi to review vrs the top of the range eero pro 6 - I think the Eero seems to win in this review due to its cheaper price variance .

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 года назад +2

      Thanks! I chose the mid range cause it's the same speed rating of ax4200 and a "similar" price point even though it does cost more. The high end Orbi cost much more so thought it's not a fair comparison to make. But it makes sense from a top tier to a top tier comparison as well. I like both routers, wondering which one I'm going to use as my main mesh wifi. I was just so impressed with Orbi's ability to hit max speeds no matter the configuration.

      @@landpet both seem good products - for me personally I need to have powerful unit for the house to run lots of items wirelessly plus with an ability to connect a satellite unit 80ft away in a garden room . The Orbi has more ports which is helpful but my set up will ultimately be connected house to garden room with cable
      Tbh I thought the eero performed well but I am still keen on the high end Orbi - if it comes down in price

      If the router is in the center of the condo, then probably not necessary but if it’s in one corner of the place then yes I would. Either of these would make a good choice, maybe I would lean a tad more in the Orbi’s direction

      Let me know how that goes. I’m still using an Apple Time Capsule with another Apple router as an extender. My current system still works reliably. I’ve tried two other mesh systems (google and Netgear) which didn’t maintain a good mesh signal and I returned both of those mesh systems.

    • @frankcatania746
      @frankcatania746 3 года назад +1

      @@douginNC28139 After looking again at the family budget and testing the speed on my Time Capsule and the Airport Extreme used as an extender, I've decided to cancel my Eero order and stay with the Time Capsule for the time being. When I tested my system again, I found that the Apple Extreme I use as a wifi extender upstairs is giving the same 200 MB service I'm getting from the Time Capsule directly connected to the cable router. I wanted to trade up to an Eero as we are getting new iPhone 12s which offer wifi 6 which is unsupported by the older Apple routers. Also, the HD in the Time Capsule has failed and I thought perhaps the Time Capsule's wifi might also be on its last legs. But as my wife reminded me, the Time Capsule still provides fine service and meets our needs at home. So I'll just hold on with the wifi set up I have until it no longer works. So it looks like I've reached the same decision as you. I wish Apple still supported its routers but they made great equipment that lasts and the money I've saved on not getting the Eero Pro can help pay for the new iPhones.

    I am thinking of purchasing the ax4200 but I have a question about hardwiring. In your videos you say you can connect via Ethernet wire from the router to the satellite but can you run an Ethernet wire from the back of the Orbi satellite to an Xbox at the same time. I guess the satellite would act as a hardwired router. I can’t find my answer on any videos or netgear site

    I am struggling with QoS on the Orbi because there is no option to set whatsoever. I have a few Ring cameras that seem to be hogging my upload bandwidth (which is a pathetic 5Mbps where I live). I was hoping to bump them down on priority during daytimes to allow WFH video conferences to not lag, but no luck.
    Any idea if Eero or some other brand might be a better one to switch to?

    To what extent we can still benefit from those mesh solutions if we cannot put our main modem/router in Bridge mode?
    What are the alternatives? Does creating another SSID help?
    Thanks for the video. Good content

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 года назад

      Thanks for the feedback and the question!
      The main purpose of using a mesh system is to expand your WiFi coverage on a single SSID. If you don’t put your modem router combo in bridge mode then you will have 2 different networks with 2 different SSID’s. I think this complicates things, something I try to avoid. Really depends what you’re trying to achieve, if you want a simple feet WiFi coverage system then a mesh system is for you.
      Alternatives are keeping your existing setup or replacing with a single powerful router granted mesh systems tend to outperform these types of single routers.

    How does the internet backhaul work with the Orbi?
    My understanding:
    - 1 router connects to the modem directly with ethernet
    - the satellite connects to the router
    - I place the satellite in the order room
    Do simply plug in an ethernet cable into the back port of the satellite and to my device (PS4), and would mimic Ethernet ported speed?

      Nest Wifi is a good router, works very well if you have ethernet backhaul. You will notice less of a difference between the Nest Wifi, Orbi and eero Pro 6 if you use ethernet backhaul. They are all good from what I've seen. Price per performance though eero Pro 6 seems to be ahead of the competition. I currently oscillate between the eero Pro 6 and the Orbi (switching them out once a week, not at use at the same time). I'm doing this so I can do a long term review of them on RUclips. If it wasn't for me doing RUclips reviews, I didn't even see a need to upgrade from my Nest Wifi since it was a rock solid router with no dropouts.

I think I will go with google since I don't have any wifi 6 devices yet and I have a lot of google-enabled IoTs and I have a wired back haul to the 3 routers I plan to install at each level. Another good "prosumer" router to review is the Orbi Pro Wifi 6. Really like that it has 4 VLANS and a different SSID for each VLAN. Each SSID can be setup for family/employees IoT, Guests and Home Entertainment.

    I have an Orbi system ( router + 1 satellite) for a 1500 square foot single story house. I have heard that to get really good coverage and speed you should mount the router and satellites as high as possible on the wall. Is this true or just more work for little return? I have the router in the master bedroom and the satellite in the living room both on table tops around 2 feet off the ground. Using the Orbi app I measure 940 mbs (paying for 800 mbs via Xfinity). My second question is what WiFi speed test app is everyone using in these You Tube videos? I am not sure I trust the Orbi app for checking WiFi speed

      I have my main one up higher and my secondary one at desk height. I think as long as it’s desk height, you should be ok. Another thing that’s more important is to place them in a more open area if possible, meaning don’t hide them behind other electronics. For internet speed tests, I use the speed test app. For local speed tests, I use the open speed test server which I haven’t done in this video. I started doing those about 8 months ago starting with the Asus ET8

    I'm based in the UK and our speeds are not that great, we just about get 1gb now.
    Before I buy anything, I like to thoroughly research all aspects. It was a toss up between the orbi and eero 6 Pro. I think I'm going to go towards orbi, simply for the speed, consistency and stability.
    However, I've heard negative reviews about netgears app and limited functionality as well as updates which makes people's Internet drop.
    For me speed, consistency and stability are important. Range is the last thing I consider but its still something I need.
    Apart from orbi, are there any tp link products that compare to the orbi? Only because of the better app and features. I would have the Asus et8 but in the UK we are restricted with products, and I've heard Asus doesn't have great reviews on the app, stability but has awesome safety features and free parental Controls etc.
    Can you advise and shed some light on orbi alternative, like tp range, Asus models for the UK etc. Maybe you can review app features of brands so people know what to expect, as well as features, like free protection, parental controls etc
    Thanks, keep up the awesome work. Really helpful and informative

      I do like the new tp link products like the Deco XE75 or XE75 Pro. They have free basic parental controls and good range with good speeds. I heard some of the negative reviews on the Orbis but have not experienced it myself on the RBK752 or RBKE963. Asus has the most options from all the routers I test and the ET8 and ET12 Pro are both great systems.
      The simple answer is, I like the TP Link Deco XE75 for the budget systems and the Asus ET12 or Netgear Orbi RBKE963 for the expensive systems.
      Hope this helps and thanks for the feedback!

    Is Mesh Wifi just a marketing term? What's the difference between a "Mesh Network" and buying 2 routers and having 1 as a access point or a range extender?
    (Edit): also great and informative video, learned way more than what I was expecting

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 года назад

      Thanks! Mesh wifi and mesh network are basically the same thing as you mentioned. The only difference is that these mesh wifi routers are designed with mesh in mind meaning they actually test that as a good portion which is why they're seamless when you walk through your place. Your device switches from one to another effortlessly without a drop or lag. Mesh network is more like you're buying a router which is mostly designed to work by itself but can work with an access point to extend your network. In the past, I had a mesh network setup and while it worked fine, it wouldn't switch as fast and you would get those occasional cut of signals. I'm sure with newer devices they've solved that so it's basically the same thing.

    I get very confused regarding range with these devices. I live out in the country but have a good wireless ISP with 12MB download and 2MB upload, which is fine for me. I currently have a last generation Apple Time Capsule, and I can get a usable signal at 180 feet from it, and a poor signal at 220 feet. So when you talk about a range of 70 feet losing performance it gives me pause.
    Am I overthinking this? Would an Orbi 6 replace my Apple Time Capsule without a significant loss of range?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 года назад

      Good question, the more interference the less the range becomes. If you’re in the country, then you should get much more range than me. It should get you more range than your time capsule. Results can vary a lot based on radio interference and walls.

    You may be missing one of the reasons for a tri-band router. The reason you got better speed with Orbi satellite wirelessly connected over the eero extender wireless connected is the Orbi has the extra wireless channel to use for backhaul.

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 года назад +1

      In theory, yes but it really depends where you’re placing the router and how much other interference exists such as walls, other wireless interference nearby, etc.
      You can always get 1, place it in the center of your house, if possible, and try it out, if it’s not good, then add 1 more and at that point you can switch the places so they’re strategically located to provide great coverage throughout, again if possible.
      I feel like you’ll probably need 2 for great coverage.

  • @Mikegritz
    @Mikegritz 3 года назад

    Having a smaller range can be a good thing, particularly in a high density area. you have a small mesh network with little noise and you're using the advantage of a mesh. If you just have one access point, then I can see having something with lots of range. I think of it like a speaker, if you just have one, then how loud matters, but if you have several, you don't need them to be loud, you can instead, have them sound good as the range is not an issue due to the satellite access points. How would you test for that in a place like a condo complex? Does this have any relevance?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 года назад

      In a condo/apartment, you would typically get less range cause of the extra walls all around (compared to a house) and the fact that your neighbors have their own wireless signals. This test was done in a building, so should give you a good idea that in a house environment you can expect to go farther.

No problem with multiple devices being on at the same time. Netflix doesn't lag, youtube doesn't lag, surfing web is still fast. Lastly, getting these are more about increasing your wifi coverage regardless of your internet speeds because older routers like my old asus (7 year old router) can easily keep up with my internet speeds. I had a question..
    I have spectrum service with the basic package of 100mbps but yesterday spectrum gave it's customers an additional 100mbps for free.
    Prior to the additional free upgrade of extra speed. Direct connect obviously gives me the fastest speed but I mainly use my internet wirelessly. Typically direct connect I get a bit more than 100 down
    I do not use the spectrum wireless router as I got recommend to get my own router because the spectrum provided one was trash and has issues switching off and on.
    So I got a netgear ac1000 dualband nighthawk and it works fine and get around 90ish plus mbps down out of the 100mbps using the 5ghz band. Using the 2.4ghz yields me 20 down out of the 100.
    Fast forward to today when I got the notice that spectrum was giving me the free upgrade to 200mbps down. I was excited but then disappointed very fast as when I tested my internet speed and was still getting the 90ish plus down out of 200mbps.
    Direct connect yields 220mbps so I figured it must be the router.
    Is my router not strong enough to push out the fast speeds? I would have thought I would have surpassed the 100mbps considering the newly upgrade.
    What should I do? What router would you recommend? I do playing pc games which I do not play direct connect at this time but I do have a nighthawk wifi adapter using the 5hz band which aids in a stable connection..
    All of my devices as of now are non WiFi 6.
    It seems I may need a stronger router but not sure where to start and It also seems I may need to do something like adding another router for ethernet backlog or backload whatever it's called for my desktop
    I just want to get closer to my full speeds wirelessly. Thanks

      Thanks for the detailed info, helps paint a better picture. While your router is on the slower end, it looks like it can support 200Mbps.
      So a few things to mention, wireless routers obviously degrade in speed the farther your device is placed. So while your router can support 200Mbps, it may not be able to support those speeds a certain distance away.
      So I'm assuming you restarted the router and modem and everything and no matter what you do it doesn't get over 90Mbps.
      If this is the case, getting a single eero Pro 6 router should solve your internet issues. If you want to get something less expensive, I'm thinking even a single eero 6 router will suffice.
      I recently made a video (not posted yet, still need to edit) but I determined that the TP Link Deco X60 is the best budget friendly mesh system but in a 500 sq. ft. Studio, I think 1 router is more than enough (assuming you just care about inside coverage). Since the TP Link comes in a 2 pack, I think one eero 6 router will most likely suffice, if not for sure one eero Pro 6 will get you those full speeds.
      Hope this helps!

      @ivantenorio1300 3 года назад

      @@landpet ya I restarted and powered cycled both modem and router. And even standing in front of the router I still get the same 90ish mbps.
      So will either one eero 6 or 6 pro give me better gains? Let's say range isn't the issue? Is my router just not strong enough even though it supports 200mbps?
      My other issue is getting a strong signal to my netgear nighthawk wifi adapter that's connected to my pc. Would the 6pro give me better speeds or do I need a 2nd eero 6 or 6pro and do a ethernet backhaul?
      Would ethernet backhauling be better than a wifi adapter like what I have?
      Oddly enough a friend of mine also has the same package from spectrum and uses the spectrum router and gets 230mbps down. The same router I understood was trash.
      His complaint is that the router connects on and off.

Same with option #4. I tested this on laptop and iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus. The Eero tech support says that this is the maximum speed I will get on wifi. I wonder how you get 480 plus on iPhone, any thoughts ?

    • @landpet
      @landpet  3 года назад +2

      Eero tech guy is wrong. You can easily get 500 down, my upload is not fast but I’m sure you can get 500 up as well. I get 480 down with all my phones, tablets, laptops.
      Did you try restarting your modem? Have you directly connected to the modem via Ethernet to a laptop or desktop to test the speeds without the eero to verify you do intact get 500 down. If so, the only logical thing that comes to mind is that your devices are connecting on the 2.4G band instead of the 5G band.
      This is what I recommend you try:
      1. Disconnect the eero and connect directly to your modem via Ethernet with a laptop or desktop and verify you are getting the speeds you expect. If not, restart your modem or contact your ISP.
      2. Once step 1 is verified, hook up just one eero pro 6. Reset it if you have to but create a new SSID that’s different than what you had. For some reason, sometimes when you use your older SSID, your devices can potentially not connect to the optimal band or other weird things can happen. Make a new SSID just to be safe.
      3. Connect an Ethernet cable to the eero pro 6 and connect it to your laptop or desktop or anything else that you can do a speed test on. Verify you are getting the 500 down and up you’re ISP provides.
      4. Now connect to the new SSID, and run a speed test with a few different sites like Speedtest.net, speakeasy.net, google speed test, etc.
      This should work, People have told me they get almost gigabit speeds with it. For sure you can get to 500 as I get to 480 without issues when I’m close to the eero
      Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

    Speed and range isn't everything. It would be help immensely if you could test connectivity in a Smart Home with 100+ devices over at least a month. Cam Secore does this kind of testing - ruclips.net/video/OrH7U4S_hJc/видео.html. After 2 months of pure hell testing/tweaking Google Nest Wi-Fi with 4 AP's, it failed miserably with frequent daily disconnects and pathetic speeds even when close to the router. Google Support said that the poor performance was due to the interference caused by the large number of W-Fi devices (which I question). I have been testing the eero 6 pro for 2 weeks and have not had any disconnects - so far so good. Initially had an issue with Leviton switches disconnecting but a firmware rollback fixed it. I am curious if the NETGEAR Orbi Whole Home Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi 6 System (RBK852) would perform as well. This review and Cam's do not give me the confidence in the Orbi - ruclips.net/video/zu4kB85W78c/видео.html.
    To me connectivity is the ULTIMATE test because when your Smart Home Speakers consistently says, "Sorry there has been a Glitch, try again later" your Smart Home is now a Dumb Home and useless. If eero 6 pro doesn't perform, my next step is a prosumer setup like The Hookup - ruclips.net/video/ufJ3dPAgFiM/видео.html.
