Drunken Master 2 aka Legend of the Drunken Master is the one you should watch. Arguably Jackie Chan's best movie. I think a lot of people who voted for this thought it was the sequel.
Also drunken mantis, the unofficial sequel to this movie, has no jackie in it but the directors brother ugly Yuen that stars in it along with the bad guy from this.
I very much agree with this.
Drunken Master 2!!!!! Love this movie
Richard B ○ Nah, they watched the right one. Plus you would have to be a moron to think this was the sequel. Drunken Master 2 definitely isn't my favorite Jackie Chan performance but if you feel it is kudos to you.
yes. the sequel also the best. Snake in the Eagle shadow also a good movie.
Famous quote of Bruce Lee about Jackie Chan," I like that guy he can take a punch"
This was one of 2 films that played a part in making Jackie into a major star during the Kung-fu craze.
He was influenced by silent film greats Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd throughout his whole career.
The director Yuen Wo-Ping is the legendary choreographer of The Matrix Trilogy; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the Kill Bill saga among many films.
In this film, Jackie is playing a young version of Wong Fei-Hung, a folk hero of Chinese culture.
But while other actors played the character seriously, Jackie in the role took many liberties in portraying the known figure as an delinquent learning to become responsible.
The sequences are bar-none considered Jackie's best in his early career.
To combine art with action and comedy seemed impossible to viewers back then.
But it's has become the Jackie Chan signature with over 100 films, many broken bones and all worth the success.
Folk hero Wong Fei Hung (1847-1925) is analagous to Wyatt Earp, and like Earp, he lived to see the first movies based on his life. The first actor to play him on screen was one of his students. The actor best known for portraying him is Kwan Tak-Hing who starred as Wong in 77 movies from 1947 - 1981. Along with Jackie's iconic portrayal in Drunken Master, Jet Li's star-making turn was as a more super-heroic version of Wong in the "Once Upon a Time in China" series. More recently Eddie Peng was a young Wong Fei-Hung in "Rise of The Legend" (2014)
There was a folk song called "The General's Mandate" that became Wong Fei-Hung's theme music over time. For the Jet Li Movies, new lyrics were written by James Wong and the Mandarin version used in the second movie was vocalized by... Jackie Chan (who can sing and has a whole career as a popstar on top of being cinema's greatest real-life super hero.)
Wong Fei-Hung's drunken style master, Beggar So, is also a popular figure in Chinese folklore and movies. The actor who portrayed him in this movie, Yuen Siu-Tin, reprised the role in two other movies. (Also, he's Yuen Woo-Ping's father) One of Stephen Chow's (Kung-Fu Hustle) early hits was as Master So in "The King of Beggars"
The action is even more insane in Drunken Master 2. Jackie can take a lot of pain.
@@chrisleebowers I've seen 2 from the series with Jet-Li and Jackie's voice in the theme was familiar. Other than Jet and Jackie doing these, the only other one I've seen was Iron Monkey.
I did like that one and putting Fei-Hong in connection with an masked vigilante was kinda cool.
@@k.delpino1124 Iron Monkey's one of my favorites! There's so many great martial artists and folk heroes that were adjacent to Wong Fei-Hung that I'm probably forgetting to mention a zillion other great movies. ("Magnificent Butcher" with Sammo Hung is another one I just remembered, about his student Lam Sai-Wing)
The main villain (“Thunder Leg” in this dub) is played by Korean master Hwang Jang Lee. He was deemed “the king of leg combat” in the _Top Fighter_ documentary, and some of the things he could do within his kicking repertoire during his prime are just mind-blowing.
Somehow I can see, "Kung Pow: Enter The Fist!" in your future. 🤣🤣
Weeo weo weo we
Ugh... must we? After Kung Fu Hustle.... ya really shouldn't go backward.
@@DanJackson1977 you don't know Emily do you
@@DanJackson1977 Really? It's just Kung Fu Hot Shots. It's pretty funny.
“You may call me… Betty. Nyahahaha.”
"I forgot to do my practice!" The Miss Ho bit of the final fight is the best part! You must watch the sequel, Legend of Drunken Master, for even more drunken boxing!
"What is this?"
"wha...uh..it has a skull!"
Yesss finaly someone does the original drunkenmaster!!! You will forever have my respect..and gratitude 🙏🏾😎
Yeah...but it's the bad dub
I have the original VHS dub on DVD
@@christopherpoll6935 I also prefer that version, but this one seems fun too.
@@gamerbear84 same movie different dub
I love it, so glad Emily loves this genre, there are so many classics.
In the wake of Bruce Lee's death, there were tons of copy cats that were a dime a dozen, but with this film, Jackie Chan differentiated himself, because beyond being a masterful martial artist and stuntman, he is very funny. That mixture made him the next great martial arts legend.
NOW, you MUST watch Drunken Master 2, where Jackie revisits this character much later in his career, in what I consider his best film and one of the greatest martial arts films of all time.
Definitely
'Snake in the Eagle's Shadow' (1978) for fun
or
'The 36th Chamber of Shaolin' (1978) for a little more gravitas.
agreed...
and
ninja in the dragons den
Yay! Classic Chan! Can't wait for Police Story, Project A, Operation Condor, Dragons Forever, and DM2!!!
Then let's see some Jet Li! Once Upon A Time in China I-II, Fist of Legend, Legend of Fong Sai-Yuk, Kiss of The Dragon and Romeo Must Die!
But friends don't let friends watch dubs... try to find the original Chinese releases - they're often longer with more stunts and funny bits and don't have annoying American pop music that they had a habit of shoehorning into the soundtracks for the US releases in the 90's.
City Hunter is unironically my favourite Jackie chan movie.
@@EmperorSmith It's one of mine too, I'm usually reluctant to put it on the "must-see" list for newbies because it's *so* off-the-rails, but these two would probably love it.
Yes, City Hunter is hilariously campy and unapologetically silly and just plain fun. In the omage to Streetfighter, Jackie as Chun Li is indescribable...it's just something you have to see to appreciate and make sure you're weating Depends when you do. Also the end fight with Jackie and Richard Norton will have you ROTFL so don't be drinking anything when you watch it unless you want it coming out of your nose.
Pippin looks so precious. I love how he reaches out a paw, sometimes.
26:42 Oh man, Matthew had my Saturdays as a kid. Oh the days.🥲🥲
Good times.
I liked "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" from the same era better. I hope you watch that one too.
Wong Fei Hung was a legend in the martial art world, the 'Once upon a time in China' trilogy featuring Jet Li in his prime is an amazing series of films to watch. Both funny and entertaining. The movie uses the same theme song as drunken master with Jackie Chan actually singing it.
You know, I tired those pushups that flipped between wrist positions once. It hurt. A lot.
Brilliant, I wish more people would do reactions like this, I don’t think they realise how much fun they are. Not to mention that it’s also a total classic.
So, Jackie Chan grew up in something called the Chinese Opera. It was a brutal experience, and is why he was able to move so athletically.
As well, yes, Drunken Boxing is an actual style. It has nothing to do with drinking, and just the movement. Remaining nimble and chaotic weaving.
I hope you also watch Legend of the Drunken Master as well as Police Story 1, 2, & 3 (aka Supercop). Four of the best martial arts films ever made and golden examples of 80's / early 90's Hong Kong action films in my opinion.
Top recs for Jackie Chan -
Big dangerous stunts - Who Am I?, Armour of God, Operation Condor
Martial arts comedies - Police Story 1-4 (3 is Supercop, 4 is First Strike), City Hunter (it's a live action anime/manga adaptation!)
3 Dragons era (w/ Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao) - Wheels on Meals, Dragons Forever
My favourite scene is the Drunken Poetry scene, right before the actual Drunken Training starts. Master and Student just drinking and bonding.
Go straight to Drunken Master 2 (the uncut Warner Archive bluray, not the Dimension "Legend of the Drunken Master" cut with replaced music)!
Manga author Akira Toriyama cited Drunken Master as one of his major inspirations for the Dragon Ball series of shōnen manga and anime. Toriyama said that he would never have come up with Dragon Ball if he had not watched Drunken Master, and he was drawn to its more light-hearted tone. Drunken Master also served as a reference for the training scenes. The series pays homage to Drunken Master when the first tournament is held, where Kame-Sennin (Master Roshi) is disguised as "Jackie Chun" and he tries to use a Drunken Fist technique on Son Goku (Goku).
Jackie was a stunt guy in Enter the Dragon.
now we need a reaction to Snake in Eagle Shadow... almost the same but Emily will more afraid of Pippin after that
#Title: Fearless Hyena.
The scene in Kung Fu Panda where they battle over the dumpling during Po’s training comes from that film.
Some Jackie Chan movies that I think you guys would really enjoy:
Operation Condor
Mister Nice Guy
Rumble In The Bronx
Police Story
Legend of the Drunken Master (aka Drunken Master 2)
There are probably a lot more, but for the life of me I can’t think of any more right now. This list should get you started at least.
Jackie Chan first strike
Jackie Chan who am I
Super cop
Twin dragon
Huge Jackie Chan fan
This and Snake in Eagles Shadow were they movies that made me start training martial arts. 40 years later and they still inspire me.
You just know Emily is gonna be doing Miss Ho impressions for the next couple of weeks 😂
One recommendation for a Jackie Chan movie that would fit your humor very much.
City Hunter - probably one of his funniest.
Oh she will totally get a kick out of Anita Mui's auntie in Drunken Master (1994) or Rumble In The Bronx.
It is gratifying to see someone who finds this movie as hilariously epic as I do. Jackie unapologetically throws every previously accepted version of Hong Kong marshal arts movies to the wind and set Asian cinema on its ear. It took a certain amount of guts and a major amount of talent to buck the status quo to create his own style. At the time, this irreverence and infectious fun involving such a reveared historical figured would have been a real risk for him but he dared to do it anyway. People would never quite see the venerable Wong Fei Hung in the same way ever again. Another legend was born.
I hope this is the start of many 80's/90's Hong Kong action flick reactions, a criminally under-represented films in the RUclips.
My all time favorite Jackie Chan film. I'm SO glad dad let me pick up a VHS from the London HMV while on vacation. I prefer the dub on that version to this one, but it could VERY well be all because it's the one I know.
I also prefer the other dub with Sam Seed, watched it until the tape wore out 👍
SHOWDOWN IN LITTLE TOKYO - Brandon Lee and Dolph Lundgren
Pippin is such a nice cat. You can see that he wants to sleep, but he don't want to be away from his can openers either. 😆🥰
Project A, Dragonlord, Wheels On Meals, Dragons Forever. You wont be disapointed.
DRUNKEN MASTER!!! So happy y'all watched/reacted to this one! One of Jackie's best movies IMO, and some absolutely fantastic martial arts. I know you said the sequel is too easy a recc, but Legend of Drunken Master is, if anything, even better than this one.
Other reccs...you literally cant go wrong with any Jackie movie, but my personal favorite is probably Who Am I?. The rooftop fight scene is AMAZEBALLS, and it has one of the best, but also most terrifying, stunts I've ever seen.
Or, if you want to watch more of his modern stuff, Shanghai Noon & Shanghai Nights are both great! They also star Owen Wilson, and they're another 'Fish out of water' setup, like the Rush Hour movies, but they're set in the Wild West era and also star Owen Wilson. Nights has an absolutely incredible swordfighting scene.
But seriously, you cannot go wrong with a Jackie movie, period.
For non Jackie stuff...any of the Raid movies; Old Boy; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; ANYTHING with Jet Li (Hero and Fist of Legend are, IMO, two of his best).
Oh, and I cannot recommend The Forbidden Kingdom enough! Jackie Chan vs Jet Li!!!!! And Jackie (sort of) revisits his Drunken Master roots, plus Jet Li plays Sun Wuhong, the Monkey King. The whole movie brings the feel of a fantastical Chinese folk tale brought to life.
Pippin is judging your drunken style...and wants you to watch the sequel
That dub voice sounds like someone who worked with Cheech & Chong too.
Part 2 made me cry hope y’all get to it 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
There's a fighting video game series, Virtual Fighter, whith a drunken kung-fu character... he's a ton of fun to play as.
Awesome reaction! One of my favorites! Randomly searched for this movie and was glad someone reacted to it. The dub for this film is legendary. 😂
Totally agree with Matt. People having it in their contract that they can't lose a fight hinders movies from being better nowadays.
\o/ You ought to check out something from Sonny Chiba. He was the Japanese version of Bruce Lee, starred in his own movies early and then was fight/stunt director for a number of U.S. movies.
Can't be a drunken master if you're not drunk
You have GOT to watch Drunken Master 2! Enjoy!
I don't know, but think this might be my favorite Jackie Chan movie. Maybe it's cause it's about a martial arts style you don't hear much about, maybe cause it's so early in his career, but definitely cause choreography is still so top notch.
Her reaction was gold. 😂
I never thought that she could enjoy and laugh so much the Eastern humor from 70s. 😊
If you haven't seen it yet, you should watch Jackie Chan's "City Hunter". It's an adaptation of the manga/anime, is silly, over the top, and one of the greatest STREET FIGHTER II fights ever.
17:31 Nobody knows it but he’s got a secret style, and he keeps it only for Jackie.
I can definitely recommend 5 deadly Venoms, Once upon a time in China series, Invincible Armor and The 36th chamber of Shoalin. Just to name a few of the old school movies. For more Jackie Chan movies there are Operation Condor 1 and 2, Supercop, My Lucky Stars, Wheels on Meals and Dragons Forever!
I love this film and I love Drunken Master 1000x more, I hope you guys watch it. That film really opens the door to Hong Kong Jackie Chan, there's so many amazing films, from his earlier days, that didnt reach us over here.
Love that yall did the original drunken master just don't try to drink every time they drink
My two top favorite Jackie Chan's films are _The Young Master_ from 1980 and _Dragons Forever_ from 1988.
18:28 comment: cat notice #movie "Snake In Eagle's Shadow."-Ernie Moore Jr.
You two should watch "t'he Five Element Ninjas" aka "The Cninese Super Ninjas", & "The 36 Chambers of Shoalin" aka The Master Killer". These were my favorite kung fu movies from the late 70's and 80's, & yes Matthew I watched them on WDBD channel 40, after cartoons went off, lol.
Emily
Drunken Master, Legend of Drunken Master, sequel has Jackie speaks without dubbing.
Drunken Master up till now is remain my most favourite funny movie...(cant resist in background; hahah)
The character of Goku is inspired by Jackie Chan in this movie. Everything from Jackie's personality, martial arts, eating habits, comedy etc.
There's a definite reference to this in Kung Pao: Enter the Fist -- the hand grab is ripped straight from here.
This is actually the second installment. You definitely have to react to the first one "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow", also with Jackie and his teacher and the same villain. No drinking but with similar humour and training.
I’ve never seen this before, but I have to see it in its entirety. It’s unapologetically goofy and I love that. Mel Brooks and Monty Python seem like Shakespeare after seeing this 😂
Emily looks so darn adorable in the thumbnail 🥰
Love drunken master, it’s even better with the original dubbing that was on vhs. Old kung fu movies were the best.
Jackie's first two American films are the Cannonball Run's 1 and 2. Hal Needham put outtakes in during the ending credits, Jackie liked that idea and every one of his films afterwards did the same.
Technically his first American film was Enter the Dragon; granted he only had a bit part as an extra in that.
Actually his real first solo performance American film was Battle Creek Brawl aka The Big Brawl in which came out in (1980)
Great ups.
Drunken Master is probably the best first film for a classic kungfu film.
My fave is Shaolin vs Lama (1983). Maybe yall will see this and consider it.
Of course the high praised classics are great to do as well.
36th Chamber of Shaolin
5 Deadly Venoms
Shaolin and Wu-tang
Eight Diagram Pole Fighter
Master of the Flying Guillotine
Executioners From Shaolin
Etc.
I love the first film and the dude that teaches him he's legendary but the second one is good to where he is Wong fei-hung
"He's doing it, that's his body"
Yeah, and nowdays it would be like 5 months of 3d modelling and rendering to do the same sort of shot :(
That restaurant scene was directly from every single Chinese buffets.
I'll join the band wagon and recommend watching Drunken Master 2 asap. It's amazing.
“Three Stooges but with Kung fu”
Yeah, Jackie Chan
-Linda Lin plays Fei Hung's Aunt.
-You should watch some more of Yuen Sin-tien, Su Hua Chi(Beggar So) aka Sam Seed. He plays a similar character in several movies. He plays Beggar Su also in "Story of Drunken Master" and "Dance of the Drunken Mantis". He also played in one called "Ol' Dirty Kung Fu".
Please react to Snake In The Eagles Shadow.
Pippin fights a cobra in that movie. 😂 and Jackie Chan vs Jesus too.
The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, The Wandering Monk, Master of the Flying Guillotine... this is a rabbit hole worth going down.
Man, given the choice between this and Armor of God, or Police Story, or Wheels on Meals, or Project A... well I don't know what to say.
she is aware that Jackie Chan dose all his own stunts, which include some EXTREMLY dangurous ones?
March+Martial Arts= March-al Arts. Boom.
I'll see myself out.
No don't go! That's literally what I've been calling it! Lol!!
Druken Master 2 is the same ........BUT The Legend of Druken Master IS the BEST.
This was my first kung-fu movie. Also I believe it was the very first comedy kung-fu movie. Also Jackie chan was trained in acrobatics from a very young age in a brutal scheme (run by the government I believe as he was a orphan )
Now Imagine if Yoda had used all of So Hai's teaching technique on Luke... not just Master Gadlight.
The sequel is amazing, don't sleep on it for too long
The logical follow up movie for this one is Snake in the Eagles Shadow.
Pippin is gonna love that one.
Another great classic kung fu movie is the one armed swordsman.
And for a really weird one check out kung fu zombie.
"Who am I?!" is a masterclass in Jackie Chan movies, in a similar vein as this one, I must say.
We need to see her reaction to City Hunter
Never saw this with English dubbing before, it’s absolutely silly. By the way, drunken is a style of kung fu but the 8 drunken immortals that they showcase in this movie is something Jacky and the legendary choreographer Yin woo Ping came up with for the movie.
So Hai is a legendary character in Chinese mythology. He is better known in Chinese as Bagger So. Like Robin Hood, the legendary Bagger So is a couple of centuries from when he is to have existed from this movie’s timeline.
Yuen Shi Tin was the actor who played Jackie Chan's shifu. He was the father of Yuen Wo Ping, the director of the movie.
Seconding other comments, City Hunter would be an awesome Jackie Chan film to react to. Also Armor of God 1 and 2, though they didn´t age too well, and the little-known Mr. Nice Guy.
If you guys liked this, I totally recommend watching warriors two, and the prodigal son (81)... amazing movies
Five Deadly Venoms, Fist of the White Lotus, and Chinese Super Ninjas. Might be to bloody for RUclips.
#title CinemaSuperSayan I also watched 'Black Belt Theater' on Saturdays after the morning cartoons. Another great Kung Fu film of that era is 'The Five Deadly Venoms'. The story in this film is very good. It is essentially a murder investigation/mystery. It's not just a long fight scene loosely strung together with some weak story.
My recommendation is IMHO the greatest martial arts film of all time, and my personal favorite film of all time of any genre. 'Fist Of Legend' starring Jet Li. Jet Li put a lot of effort into making the fight scenes very realistic and accurate to the time. Co-Star Shinobu Nakayama is one of my favorite actresses. The cinematography is amazing and the American dub version has a much better score. I recommend that version.
The master was So High, and he taught the ways of the woman he called Ho
It's not a joke, and yet here we are...
Kung Pow did a... well it did a job, at trying to parody and satirize old kung fu movies. Liked it as a kid, but dunno if I'd like it so much as an adult. Could give it a spin on the channel once you've got some more of the classics under your belt.
I'd give this one a seven on my personal taste, but the sequel is an easy 10 for me. Rumble in the Bronx is an easy Chan film to suggest, and, in terms of more recent projects, the Foreigner was something I rather enjoyed.
Please react to Drunken Master 2. It is one of the greatest martial arts films of all time.
3:24 - nice call back to 'Enter the Dragon'
Drunken Master is a funny goofy movie, but Drunker Master 2 is a masterpiece. Some of Jackie Chan's best work.
I thoroughly enjoyed this but I was so hoping she would watch Blood sport next. All the call backs to Enter The Dragon. In particular, Bolo Yueng.
One of the few intros I never skip, always interested in seeing the beforehand and love the aftermath.
This film is so close to my heart.
Yeah, Dragon Ball was initially inspired by the Chinese 'Journey to the West' novel as well as Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan films.
Some other Kung Fu films you may enjoy are Jet Li's Fist of Legend, The Legend I & II, Twin Warriors, Once Upon a Time in China, and Fearless. Also, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and Curse of the Golden Flowers are amazing wuxia films I think you'd find interesting.
