For spectators, in order to keep this from being to boring, we really need live dynamic stats on the screen. The meters counting up or down tells us little...keep the seconds behind on screen at all times with a variance of gains or lossed time. Keep the # of tacks and jibes up as it shows which teams lose time by having to tack more often. But really the key is time or speed lost in tacks and jibes. How well is the team making maneuvers? Also, figure out how to commentate on the tactics at the start, learn how to break it down better for an audience....we also need to see average VMG up and downwind for these boats to see which perform better during certain conditions. Finally, when showing the wind graphic with colors, out a key on screen. What's the average wind speed, + gusts in green, - drops in blue, we need numbers or more significant variables to really see the differences in pressure across the course...make it more enjoyable to watch the highlights please 🙏
Looks like I can save loads of time and boredom following these races by just watching the start to know who the winner is. The occasional mess up by the front boat will gift a win. Nail the start win the race done. A bit like the F1 days of old where cars were following one another with nobody being able to overtake due to the loss of performance for the car behind.
Oh, these mind-numbing team names, doggedly spelt out in full by the commentators: L-U-N-A R-O-S-S-A P-R-A-D-A P-I-R-E-L-L-I. just call it «Luna Rossa», PLEASE, we’ll know who you mean …
That start maneuver was the highlight of the day and this says a lot. They need to do something for the next LV, cause this is boring as hell. My idea would be to get rid of this 1:1 match racing and have at least 4 boats in 1 race. Hopefully this would open the door to a lot more tactical maneuvers on the track. Quite now it is: Win the start and don't fall of the foils. Don't get me wrong. Are those boats spectacular? Of course they are. The speed is absolutely spectacular. Is the sailing itself (tactical sailing, using the rules, ...) exciting? Not at all.
I hope Luna Rossa wins so that they take away the Kiwis' ability to decide which boat to race with. Great sailors, but incapable of developing a boat concept that can guarantee spectacle and real sporting competition. It is not possible to see a sport that is decided at the start and that makes it impossible to come back unless someone else makes a mistake. Does anyone remember how good the America's Cup organised by Alinghi in Valencia was?
@@kiwiroy48Do you mean Spithill? He’s not the skipper just a helmsman, and has been sailing for LR (and living on and off in Italy) for 20 plus years. NZ have Nathan Outteridge who’s Australian, American Magic have Goodison who’s a Brit etc. etc. all the teams have at least one foreigner
I hate the artificial boundaries - they are not pure from a match racing standpoint.Take the race course out to sea and this could be a lot more exciting than it is shaping up to be. These races are over at the start line.
I WANT OLD SCHOOL! This is so dull. Remember the old days when they'd be going 6 knots but you'd be caught up in the drama--the cdovering, the spinniker jibes, the slam-dunk tacks. Going so slow, but so much more drama. This is like watching TRON or something.
You're remembering a fantasy. The old boats would rarely get into tacking duels after the start. They were ALWAYS drag races with one team destroying the other. The only potential excitement was if a team in the lead broke something, which rarely happened. Those old monohull races were a complete joke 99% of the time.
Maybe the organizers will realize this is so boring that they will change the format to something like sail GP. As many have said watch the start and you know who has won the race. What a waste of money and time.
This is incredibly boring... after years of planning, incredible engineering, and massive amounts of money invested in developing hyper-advanced race boats, we've managed to create racing - at supposedly the highest level - that is entirely decided by the minute or so before the start. As more than a few people have suggested, there is something seriously wrong with not only the technological formula (as the lack of any apparent human involvement means it may as well be RC boats out there for all the spectators know) but with the race format itself. At this point, let's save time (and reduce the environmental impact of the entire regatta) and just call the race at the end of the first leg if the lead is anything more than 3 boat lengths (perhaps even 2.5. Or 2?). Given the modeling, sims, and wind/weather tech available, none of these boats have any chance of overcoming a lead any larger than that outside of some massive tech or structural failure -- which will only become less and less likely the more races they get under their belts. What a sad situation for the Cup and for sailing as a whole.
This is still FAR more exciting than many of the cups with the old monohulls. Those were always blow out wins by one team. They'd have a 3 minute tacking duel at the start, then a drag race with the fastest boat winning. But everyone seems to forget that fact.
How can you say there's a lack of human involvement when the cyclors are all putting out hundreds of watts and you said yourself that the starts often decide the races (so the sailing teams are also clearly involved)
@robertohaubold752 True... but it's all invisible to the viewers/spectators. Truthfully, for all we know, there's 999 hamsters running on gold-plated wheels below the decks and out of sight. At least in the old days, we could see the guys working at the grinders. Currently, we don't see the effort, or the skill, or the nuance, and without a sense of the humans involved, its lost the urgency and drama that makes it compelling.
The trouble is match racing in ideal match racing conditions with no tide, might as well be on a lake. I’d prefer a round the cans race with winds effected by land and changing tidal currents. So far this has been rather yawn.
😮Unfortunately I have to agree With the criticism on how there is no excitement in the racing after the racing has started.Glen Asby and Peter lester are hilight.whats happen to tye leading yacht advantage line overlaid on the Course

Great start!
These are basically warm up races doesn’t officially start till August 29th
This is great sport!
that was a clinic at the start

I don’t think that’s how sponsorship works.
Got to mention the names putting up the big bucks.
Sorry, Prada and Pirelli disagree.
Sail GP is much more exciting to watch. Once the start is over this is just a procession around the marks.

You summed it up perfectly; F1 on water but boring match racing.

I know Spithil is just in it for the money 👿😎

Yes, having 3 days of racing cancelled for lack of wind was great...
But very knowledgeable with respect to sailing😂😂😂😂😂😂

The camera shot facing the bow is the best, we should close up shots of nothing more.

Disagree ,remember the Paul Cayard gybng duel?
That was the start I'd expect to see in a junior sailing program. All AM did by tacking was set themselves up for barging. Truly STUPID.
