Yes, Jon best way to go 🙏... i know it must of hurt because of the amount of times you said 300 pounds 😂 My 450 is still on its original exhaust... so you will probably get even longer than 15 years as you will look after better , your dad's a absolute Gem 👌 brilliant guys , look forward to the next installment 👍
@JonCoupland I've been looking at the pricing for parts on the 451 ... the only thing cheaper is the 3 spark plugs instead of six 🫣 maybe it's just a more current vehicle 🤔
Hi, that back bolt is easily reached, when the car is down on all four tires, and you get under a bit and reach under, back and around that wheel bar thing. I had that back bolt screwed on faster than I wanted with a cheap hand drill. I just put it all on, without removing anything else. It was hardest to reach in, and hold the gasket (maybe use removable tape to hold it in place?), and keep muffler positioned right with my body under it ... And reach in there, ... It was crazy. I used about different tools, just to screw it in. Again, that was without removing the panels and crash bar. Funny, we had opposite frustration with the bolts. I would have used a kid or strong girlfriend to do it for me, if I owned one of those tools. The tools I used for this, was #9 metric Universal socket, a E-12 Torx socket, a 1/4 hand held usb cheap powered rachet, a normal and a swivel racheting wrenches I think #8 or #10 metric, and I think somehow I managed to use a cheap bent drill bit holder thing and a short drill extender bar, maybe. Now I have the problem that the Universal socket which was most helpful, got fumbled and dropped and I have no idea where it went. Based on your video, it seems ... There is no logical place for it to have gotten stuck, except in the muffler edges? Or on top of crash bar?? Ive felt with fingers, magnetic bendy light, looked with pivot stick mirror, shaken car. I don't want to take off the muffler and risk ruining integrity of gasket connection. Well thanks. You guys are funny and interesting and educational to watch. Its a nice break from the stress of it. I don't know about Britain, but in USA 16 year old cars dont generally run anymore, let alone not be totally covered in rust. So far my 2008 smart car has ended up being much easier to fix than any car I worked on. Those were mostly a 5 year old, 11, and 8 year old car. And I do it without jacking it, and often without seeing what I am doing.
Good job reinstalling the exhaust. Genuine parts definitely the correct way to go...£300 is cheap these days. I repeat my last comment...the Auto Knight videos on a 451 are superb and will save you a lot of time in the long run as he gives many tips on how things are disassembled correctly. Mercedes spent a lot of time thinking about how to shove a vast amount of technology into such a small package and knowing how to work on them is half the battle. Few garages know how. Strangely, many things are a LOT easier dropping the engine a tad using long service bolts... it's a lot easier than you think. Things to check: All the springs ..these break often with potholes. Engine mounts...there are three...after 15 years these are likely perished. ABS reluctor rings for corrosion. Judging by the overall condition these may need changing. They are behind the hubs. Check the Tridion shell for corrosion and wire brush and treat any you find with Waxoyl or similar...you don't want corrosion on that area at all. Good luck with the rest of your restoration ❤

👍👍 Good work dad! i can't remember the last time I saw a pattern part go on as easily as that exhaust - even given the difficult access. Amazing how crusty it all is under there for 2011. I guess being hauled around the country (front end lifted?) pushed a load of road grime and salt under there.

Those exhaust bolts (technically, they're screws) are an E-Torx head. I'm surprised your dad doesn't have any such spanners or sockets (something else you can buy for him). The genuine parts were money well spent.

At the moment I have got some problems with my display. It sometimes just goes off for a few seconds, when I shift or break!? I am looking forward to more smart-videos. These ones with the topic "exhaust" were very helpfull, thank you. And yeah, your bright orange colour is unique and at first I didn't know that this version existed as an original. Very cool!

John, you need to buy your Dad a set of Torx sockets instead of letting him struggle using ring spanners 😉
