Shinobi was a big franchise for Sega during the 1980s and early 90s and it's no surprise that Sega's hand held platform received this extremely well-crafted, first party title for the system.
The game is similar to the Shinobi games that featured on the Mega Drive/Genesis consoles, but added different characters with different weapons and magic. The first part of the game requires the player to rescue the other four ninja, all of whom are required to complete the fifth and final stage.
A break down of the different ninja:
Red (earthquake: destroys enemies and scenery)
Pink (Walk on ceilings/flash of light: stuns enemies and illuminates dark areas)
Yellow (water walking/shield)
Blue (Grappling hook/tornado)
Green (Double-jump/self-destruct)
This was a great game on the Game Gear and I remember it keeping me entertained through many a rainy day. The game is simple to play, yet the final level took some thought as to how each of the puzzle rooms should be completed and which ninja to use.
The only issue with the game is the slightly picky controls when trying to perform the Green ninja's double jump. It's impossible to perform once the animation has passed the peak of the original jump; the only reliable way is to perform the jump whilst still rising. This is a minor complaint, however.
The game is quite accomplished for an 8-bit hand-held machine, even going as far to include some parallax scrolling and fairly detailed sprites.
Yuzo Koshiro composed some fantastic music for the game, including 8-bit renditions of Terrible Beat and Long Distance.
The Game Gear version of Shinobi was great fun to play back then and is still fun to play now. Happy memories...

I am 40 years old, my parents gave it to me when I was 12 years old ... what memories
We have things in common 😄
same age . 41
and i was 13
Same
I was 6 or something :DD
and beated it 1 or years later.
Same here, 42, played it when I was 11. First and favourite game on the Game Gear!
Used to play this game for HOURS when I was a kid. My older cousin had this, and I didn't own any handhelds - so I put insane time into this.
The memories... This was a great game!
this looks and sounds fantastic, and it has great level design as well! easily one of the very best game gear games ever!
Deserve remake by modern game engine
Played great too! Very responsive controls!
I recently beat Revenge of Shinobi on Genesis. Good game but I hated how enemies attacked you off-screen and mobbed you. This one seems to have less of that problem.
This actually looks better than Revenge of Shinobi design-wise. Looks like the Game Boy Castlevania titles but even better.
First game I bought with my imported Game Gear, around 1990. It's an absolute classic, with great music from Yuzo Koshiro and some near 16-bit class graphics. Very impressive for such an early release. 🙂
The soundtrack of this game is absolutely epic. Unmatched for that era.
The favourite game and soundtrack of my childhood!
Me too
@@PersonausdemAll Yessir!
@@pancon5 🤠👍
Yes me to!😅
Took at least one year to complete the final stage. I am 41 years old now. Youth memories at its best
Playing as different ninjas was great
I love the music in this game.
I Love satan
I Love
Yuzo Koshiro, amazing composer!
I liked this game so much that I decided to start work on a Megadrive/Genesis remake:

As light and easy as I find the levels to free the shinobi, the shivers run down my spine when I hear the music of Neo City. 16:48
Even today after almost 30 years 😬
When I listen to the music, I automatically lose 3 lives 🤣
A friend from school had to come over to show me how to beat that epic level!
@@pancon5 🙈Oh yes Neo City, this Music Scaries me still today :DD But I beated it as a kid ;D
@@HarzerI Yes absolutely, the music set the atmosphere, made us anxious,.and then all the different traps/environmental hazards. 😱
Wow I haven't watched this in 30 years!
The soundtrack was incredible. The GameGear games were ahead of their time. Even the Master System games didn't get this quality.
Dude, this soundtrack goes SO hard. Every single stage.
This brings back memories, thank you
ending song so good.
Yes!!! Amazing!
This game deserve remake
One of my first games : )
I would stay up for hours playing this game. Give me game gear🗣️
I Love this game.
Amazing OST and gameplay!
Absolute masterpiece of 8-bit programming. Everything Master System "Strider" ought to have been.
the game design concept of GG shinobi would make an awesome metroidvania game. Where the player unlocks addition ninjas with different abilities that allows the player to access terrain that was previously inaccessible
I don’t know why there would be badges willing to blow themselves up.
Had totally forgotten this game back in the 90s
Best music
Such a great playthrough, although how come you don't get the health increases in Highway in the top of the building and in Valley which I don't know where it is?
If I remember correctly it's maybe halfway through the first level, you have to jump all the way up and watch out for breaking one of the crates because you have to jump from on top of it to the highest point of the map where the upgrade is
For the one in the valley, you have to walk on water with yellow shinobi without stopping, until you see a plateform with a lady throwing shits at you next to a destructible case ... Wich contains the healt increase ;)
Sorry for my english
Legendary game, I used to play it with game gear
Legendary soundtrack. Even had a couple from Revenge of Shinobi!
My favorite Shinobi ❤❤
I tried this out on the 3DS virtual console, and I must say, GG Shinobi is probably the game that proved to me that the Game Gear was capable of having good quality titles than just cheap and portable versions of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. With how much of a success the Gameboy had with both exclusive and third party titles, I just struggled to see how the Game Gear was able to compete with the GB. However, despite not being the best portable at the time, I'm glad to know that it still got a few good games of its own besides just the typical Sonic games made for it.
Battery life aside, GG was the superior handheld. The overwhelming vast majority of Gameboy titles were shovelware and if it hadn't been for Pokemon, the Gameboys lifespan would have been half of what it was. For Game Gear, I love Sonic 1, Shinobi 1 and 2, Streets of Rage 2, and Shining Force 2. All are fantastic games.
I remember never beating this as a kid. I would get so bored on Neo City as it's so repetitive. I think I was only 2 screens away from the boss!
Similar story here!
Best 8bit game ever. With games like this, Master System would have been much more successful.
Agreed! Such a shame it never came out of the Master System.
Heres hoping it comes to Switch online
Sega could have easily been ported over Master System Shinobi, instead we got this really neat original game instead! Some of the background graphics were near 16-bit class 🙂
音楽かっこいいな
GGのマリオ的位置づけのゲームだったと思う 難しいけど
I personally prefer this to the genesis verson
The sound track to this game reminds me of castlevaina, just with a ninjas.
I had this game on the GG but I remember completly different levels. Is there another shinobi game on the GG?
Yeah probably a 2nd one
Yes you had the GG Shinobi II Game ;D
GG Shonobi II: Silent Fury? If I remember correctly.
8:55 the enemy looks sorta like Blaze Fielding.
Thatts right xD
For me this character was "Pocahontas" xD
3:21 Noooooo you forgot the Life Power up to the right xD
1:43 I love this music.
Yuzo Koshiro the best musician of Sega
24:38 is as far as I ever made it in the game. I'm not sure why I couldn't figure out that part.
This version of Shinobi basically was TMNT & MK💜🧡❤💙💚
I wonder why the pink level at 29:50 has video glitches, the electric water being invisible and then the blocks. It looks quite normal on a GG micro: ruclips.net/video/7PTRil07Zzk/видео.html
It's probably an artifact of the emulator interpolating the game to 60 fps. Transparent water effects on older (especially SEGA) consoles were often "faked" by only displaying the water sprite every other frame and letting the physical properties of the display turn that into a transparency effect, when you force it to 60 this can sometimes grab the image at the wrong time leading to graphical glitches.
Speaking of pink, is the pink shinobi a male or female?
hard game, gg!
I’m having a hard time not dying in this game.I need help…
I never beat this! Never knew their was an “order” to do them in lol smh
Neo City has the best music
It's just a cool ninja version of Mega Man. ;)
there is a blue thorny place in the end where u get stuck what u do there??
Unfortunally this came never for Genesis or Master System.
I NEVER BEAT THIS GAME! The Game Gear of Shinobi
Better than castlevania on nes
You are a gay.
you miss a lot of things
Thanks gay
Uruguay
Shinobi rangers?
It's such a shame that this game is locked at 30fps and cannot be overclocked (just like Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap).
higher fps isnt automatically good
