- Опубликовано: 4 ноя 2024
- A pattern I would almost consider a guide fly - a simple, quick tie with fairly cheap materials. And it catches fish.
Hook: #12-16 1x long nymph
Bead: Silver, size to match the hook
Thread: 140 denier, any color
Tail: Squirrel body hair
Rib: Thread (from the tag end)
Body: Squirrel dubbing (any color)
Thorax: Ice dub

Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. Thanks for stopping by.
"Savage Squirrel" could have been a TV superhero when I was growing up! Great name for what looks like a simple tie & a sure fish catcher. Thanks for sharing it with us Matt.
Hahaha! John just mentioned it would be a good name for a TV show. :-)
Good Morning Sir Matt, The Savage Squirrel WOW 👏 so simple and so productive ... what more can you ask for ... Thank You Sir Matt 😊 until next time.
Thanks Edward! Always appreciate it my friend. Have a great weekend!
Have a great trip, love starting my Friday with coffee and you video
Well thank you Jim! I appreciate this comment my friend.
Glad to see the nymphs have made a return to the channel. Can't wait to tie a few of these up.
Appreciate it David!
Can’t beat that for simplicity. But high on enjoyment and productivity. Thank you Matt. A great looking fly. Let us know how it does next week. Have a great trip.
Will do Jeff! Have a great weekend my friend. :-)
Thanks Matt you have no idea how much I appreciate you doing this for us I really do
Well thank YOU for this comment Marty. I appreciate you for watching my friend. :-)
Three materials, it doesn't get much more simple. I've finally figured out how to tell what fish like to eat, pretty much anything I wouldn't want to eat, especially if it wiggles or crawls. Keep the good stuff coming Matt.
Hahaha! You might be right Dave. But more on that note... I actually tied a one-material fly tonight. It's called a Honey Bug and I heard it does well on the creek I'm fishing tomorrow. (Big Hunting Creek up in northern Maryland).
Love simple flies that catch fish
Thanks for the video Matt
Thanks Dave! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Great TIE Great fly!! That ice dub seems to make flies magical ,and buggy spkiy squirrel can't go wrong
Absolutely Chasse! Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
Matt, I hope you will forgive me if I say you are not the best technical fly tier on RUclips; but that helps make you so accessible to a relative newbie like me and along with your great communication skills is what makes you one of the most enjoyable for me to watch. Thanks so much for your ongoing contributions.
Simple pattern that appears like it would be a fish catcher. Thanks for the video Matt.
Thanks Mike! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Thanks Matt for a cool quick tie, looks great.
Thanks Lee! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
You just made my tying list longer. Fuzzy, ambiguous insect is indeed a recipe for success. Good one, Matt. Using the thread tag to counter wrap is good for durability, & it does make for nice segmentation.
Thanks Bob! I do love tying these "in the round" patterns. You might appreciate where I'm heading in the morning. I'm going up to Big Hunting Creek in central Maryland. It's just outside of Camp David and there's actually a pool there called the "President's Pool." I've also always heard that Presidents Roosevelt, Eisenhower and Jimmy Carter used to fly fish it. Somehow I doubt I'll bump into Joe Biden up there though. :-)
Very cool!
Matt, your keeping me busy tying. I tied up some of your zebra midges (from Tuesday) last night. Now I will have to tie up a few of these. Thanks! 😁
Hahaha! Have fun with it Bruce. :-)
Great name and for sure the fish like it. Thx Matt.
Thanks Clyde! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Another nice one Matt, definitely adding this one to my box have a blessed day my friend.
Thanks! Always appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
Looks good and have a good time fishing. Thanks for sharing Matt.
Thanks Butch! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Great little fly, looks awesome. Will have to add a few to the nymph box. Thanks Matt for sharing.
Thanks Layton! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Awesome job Matt, that’s a cool Fly!!!!!
Thanks J! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
I really like this nymph. You can change it up quite a bit with different colors. Thanks Matt and have a great weekend.
Sure looks like it'll catch fish, Matt. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Jim! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Hi Matt. Currently sitting in Montana watching Savage squirrels and no it’s not a television show. 😀. That fly is definitely going on the list to tie. We are here until Tuesday waiting for truck parts. May have to tie some flies while stuck in the hotel. The perils of winter travel and poorly engineered emission systems. Oh well. We’ll get there a few days late not a big deal.
Man, stuck in Montana for a few days. Hopefully you're in a beautiful part of the state! I like your attitude though- just make the best of it. Savage Squirrels could definitely be a cool name for a TV show. :-) Okay, almost bedtime for me. Only back from San Francisco for a day and I'm heading out to Big Hunting Creek in the morning. BHC is truly a cool, historic stream down here. Joe Brooks started his "Brotherhood of the Jungle Cock" there way back when, and the area is just outside of Camp David (our president's retreat). I've always heard Presidents Roosevelt, Eisenhower and Jimmy Carter fished it often. Fingers crossed I'll have a good day. And good luck to you in Montana!
Very catchy looking fly, I can't wait to towing, and fishing a few. Thanks very much. God bless.
Great stuff Matt, the name is what it is. I will add this to my fly box. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Howard! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
I'm glad you mentioned a dedicated scissors for cutting the lead. When I was beginning to tie flies, I cut wire and lead with my scissors. I can't explain why I didn't notice the nicks in the scissors sooner. Part of the learning curve.
Another great looking fly Matt, hope you got a couple hour nap before you had to get up for work today.
Hahaha! That's about all I got Phil. Also got your emails... hopefully I'll have some time Saturday or Sunday to catch up with my backlog there. Have a great weekend my friend. :-)
Looks like a great bug. Like the name as well. Have a great holiday season. Warmest regards
Great fly Matt,
Thanks John! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Awesome fly I like that it's so simple
Thanks Pat! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
I love it!! Thank you Matt!! I’m going to be tying up some flies tonight to send to a RUclips channel I like! I think I’ll send him some of this fly. This guy has just recently started adding fly fishing to his channel so I thought I’d share some flies with him! #bassntrout
Cool! Thanks Barbara. You have a great weekend my friend. :-)
I love these simple ties 👍
Thanks Mark! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)

@@mikefick6725 Sorry Mike. I was rushing through the comments last night trying to answer them all.
@@SavageFlies the fact that you actually answer them all is incredible and speaks to the dedication you have to your channel and this community 👏
Nice! Thanks Matt
Thanks Daniel! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
I really like that fly Matt! It looks like something I might come up with. I found out a long time ago, if its dark and buggy looking, the fish will eat it. Thanks for sharing, have a great time next week. Hope the streams aren't running to high. Tight lines. 👍.
Thanks Jim! Fingers crossed the weather cooperates down in Georgia next week. Always appreciate the note my friend. :-)
Thanks Matt! Love the name..Savage Squirrel..gave me a certain visual of a mad squirrel you wouldn’t want to trim his bushy tail while he’s wearing it! 🐿 😂 Great looking fly.👍 Not sure how far south you’re heading, bass and sunfish are still active here in Texas. 75 degrees today..C’mon down! Have a great weekend my friend! 👍🎣👌
75 degrees... oh man! Jim just told met he lows next weekend for my Georgia trip are going to be in the mid-20s. And going to be in the 30s when I'm fishing Big Hunting Creek in the morning. Not quite Texas weather, but not too cold to keep us off the water. :-)
@@SavageFlies Good luck Matt! Hopefully you’ll get some awesome fish and fishing videos for us! Have a great trip! 👍🎣
Very cool thank you!
Great fly Matt. Thanks.
awesome Matt
Thanks Michael! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
Great generic pattern. Tan, olive and brown would cover most Eastern streams. Even though I only trout fish when I go North twice a year, I'll be tying some of these in size 16 . Thanks again for another great video.
Appreciate it Ed! You know the bluegills would love this thing too. :-)
Good stuff Mat.
Great tutorial Matt! Buggy, simple, limited materials... but a savage squirrel needs a loin cloth, no? 🤫All kidding aside, that's an awesome impressionistic "in the round" nymph. I see the Whitlock influence, and I like the dark ice dub thorax, imitates the the dark wingcase of a nymph ready to hatch and the "ice" is the gas. Well done and thought out pattern Matt, thanks! 🤑👍
Appreciate it Joe! I forgot to mention in the intro that this is another of the ever-successful "in the round" flies. And hey, you might appreciate where I'm heading tomorrow. It's called Big Hunting Creek here in northern Maryland. It's just outside of Camp David and I've always heard presidents Roosevelt, Eisenhower and Jimmy Carter used to fly fish it. It's a fair hike for me and I've only been twice. Skunked once (in the spring) and had a decent day the other time (a January). Fingers crossed I'll have some luck tomorrow. Have a great weekend my friend!
@@SavageFlies Yes, Camp David! "I like Ike" and Ike liked the House and Lot aka the H&L Variant. I had to refresh my memory on Camp David, I searched it and the fishing Presidents. So if you see any H&Ls in the trees they may be Eisenhower's. Carter may have used the PB&J, aka the Peanut Butter & Jelly. 🥜🧈 🍇 😂🥪m-m-m. Good luck Matt, safe trip! 🤓👍
Hey Matt☕️☕️
Man oh man, just rolled out of bed🤪not like me at all. That does look good, I should twist some up and love the name. I will be sending you an email. When we can talk about some things this is going to be epic 👍
Absolutely! I can't wait. :-)
Morning Matt. Placing my order now. Baker's dozen. Christmas code for discount "Santa's sleigh".
Like the fly. Have fun on your fishing trip. Hope you take some videos fishing with this fly and will share it with us.
Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Hahaha! Thanks Nich. We're definitely going to have a good time. I'm just hoping the fish will cooperate. Have a great weekend my friend. :-)
Sweet fly Matt could add a cdc collar safe trip
That's a good call Burt! If I had some black CDC I might have tried that. :-)
Pretty neat
Thanks Jeff! Always appreciate it my friend. :-)
@@SavageFlies you are very welcome. it is my pleasure
that one is full of good ideas. I wonder how it would act with a partridge collar?
I think any "fuzzy" like soft hackle or even something like squirrel in a dubbing loop would look good. Thanks for the note Tom!
👍💪
cool name and fly matt thanks...hey have you had a chance to try my fly THE ALLEGANNY NYMPH...was just wondering if you have and if you did how did it do...thanks...see ya joe ...and as always i will be watching.
"Park it with the magnet?" What do you use for your material clip? A magnet?
Yep, just a simple little disc magnet I got in the craft section at Walmart. Something like this: www.walmart.com/ip/Go-Create-19mm-Round-Magnets-52-Count/19525324?athbdg=L1200
A while ago I watched a video of yours where you shared a website that you got fur pelts and scraps from. I can’t seem to find that video and I’m interested in checking that website out. Would you be willing to share?
