    Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
    Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

      Thanks Pablo! Will have a DIY dubbing video soon. And BTW, some materials are a lot harder to get to stay on the thread than others. Squirrel is a little harder than rabbit, and beaver or seal can be really tricky! What can help a lot is mixing in just a little bit of synthetic for some of the harder-to-dub furs.

      @@SavageFlies you're gonna do a pheasant skit series!?!?!! I have long wanted someone to do a a series like that as I have two rooster skins and a hen. • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 года назад

      @@JamesMcCutcheon -You are correct! And they are beautiful birds and VERY useful to a tier. But guess what... I just bought five ringneck cock pheasant skins this week. I'm going to start a series of 12 flies that primarily use these feathers. I'm going to take volunteers of anyone who wants a skin, I'll send it to them, but they have to commit to inventing a fly that I can tie for the channel. It'll be a fun experiment. We might get some crazy looking flies, but that's one of the things that make fly tying so cool. Stay tuned for the series, probably starting right before Thanksgiving, and if you want to participate since you've already got some skins, that would be great! :-)

    Great one!!! This one is on the more realistic ones! Matt, how many flies do you think you have tied?
    Loved the ending with the silver stacking ad! Lol. Yeah, that has to be because of Sarge's videos!

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 года назад

      Otto, thanks my friend! How many flies have I tied? That's a good question. I can tell you that this year, since starting this channel, it has been more than any other year before! Let me think about it... in a typical year, since about 2015, I would probably tie about 2-3 dozen of the six or so main patterns I fish with. That's really only about 200 flies a year. And not a whole lot of variety! But since starting this channel earlier this year, I've probably tied another 500 or so. That's probably 150 different patterns, 3-4 of each.
      The problem is that I probably USE much less than 200 flies in a year. I would love to use more, but I only get to fish a couple of days a month. So I end up with a bunch of flies stockpiled that I just give away. Maybe I should give them away on the channel. That's a good idea. :-)
      Thanks for watching. I hope you have a video for us tomorrow. I can't wait!!

    This is a great nymph, though I never have any squirrel tail hair so I tie the tail like I'm doing a hare's ear tail.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 года назад

      Eric- I think your way (using body hair for the tail) actually looks better. It is how Dave Whitlock ties his. And he's pretty emphatic about not using tail hair for the tail. It's just a little harder sometimes, and I'm not a purist so I'll use squirrel tail hair on lots of mine. BTW, you should try squirrel tail sometimes. It stacks well, and makes great hair wings for some streamers, and even a decent wing on some caddis patterns. If you don't have easy access to squirrel tails, I think I got a ziplock back of them one time off Ebay for pretty cheap. :-)

    Very nice nymph. I would like a video on creating dubbing. I have done dubbing a pinch or two at a time. I have not resorted to the coffee mill technique yet. I have hand stacked some deer tail colored hair by hand as well to sort by size for tying streamer patterns.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 года назад +1

      @@nlcirque -No animals I would really avoid, though some are harder to work with than others. Seal (or imitation seal) is a pain to work with. And rabbit and fox can be so similar as to be almost interchangeable. As for hunting, I haven't really hunted in decades. I do let folks hunt and trap on my farmland in exchange for some skins here and there. But honestly, I live in a rural area so a lot of my pelts are from roadkill (raccoons, opossum, fox, and squirrel if needed). I do have enough hunter friends who will give me enough bucktail every year to last a lifetime. :-)
