It's hard to judge an amp from an online video but they both sound quite good. Thanks Phil.
Come on Phil, it’s the law that you have to play at least 5 AIC riffs when playing through a JJ.
I was waiting for the we die young riff
I hear it well enough to enjoy it :)
I think I like the runt gain options better. It has BE mode and a cut option for lower gain. It sounds like the JJ JR has the BE mode and JBE is similar but really just a lot more saturated. I think I’d get tired of the overly saturated thing and would prefer the cut option of the Runt. I’d like to explore clean channel differences more. Sounded like more headroom with Runt but a little more scooped in the mids
I love the channel Phil. I believe the amp is actually called the “double J” named after Jerry’s family ranch. Of course 99% of people out there refer to it as JJ.
Double J it is.
This video sounds so muffled compared to literally every other JJ mini demo :/
I agree. I am not sure what happened here. I love phil, and his video stuff.
He's miking too close... too much proximity effect. See the baby bottle slammed up against the grill.
00:21 jj
00:38 runt
2:03 jbe
2:19 runt
Seriously! Pink taco, brown eye, dirty Shirley! This company has a seriously great sense of humor!! This video should have a PG rating!
Phil, the amps are great but that G&L is a beauty... Looks and sounds amazing.
Those look nice, but I guess Friedman should make a 2 channel Pink Taco or Dirty Shirley Mini.
I was on the fence between the Pink Taco & Runt 20. Fortunately, my procrastination paid off when the JJ Jr. was released 😜 It has all the tone & features I need. The clean channel is based on Vox AC, per Jerry's requirements. It is grittier than the Runt's clean channel.
They sound exactly bthe same.in the vid. I'm sure it's different in the room. But damn
Any chance you can review the synergy system?
I’d be interested to hear the BE-OD pedal through the JJ Jr. lol
I had both and sold the be deluxe od. No pedal matches what a real amp can give you.
I bought the Runt 20 combo in part for Dave's XLR Out, for home recording. Dave is now selling it as a stand alone unit. Im happily keeping my Runt but The JJ' Jr. wont disappoint with all the features of the Runt! Thanks for all the great content!
Still learning to play ... years of relatively quiet. Getting close to wanting the walls to shake and the neighbors to know! For at least a little while.
Hey Phil which would you prefer the PT20 or the JJ JR?
Friedman crunch sound is so iconic, so unique, so awesome !
From what I've seen from people like Robert Baker, Friedmans have definitely made an impression on me for wanting to get one! Surely both have their unique attributes, but I have to go with the Friedman on this one! Great work!
RC32 they’re both Friedman amps.
@@Thatblackz28 Ahh ye that is true Haha. But the JJ definitely sounded more for me
RC32 I concur. Definitely the JJ.
@@Thatblackz28 ahhh definitely my man
G and L and the JJ nice
Cool! When was the PRS Silver Sky acquired?
all the amp these day are way overprice
Thanks for video comparison. the question that has me hesitating pulling trigger is whether the clean channel can compete in a live situation with a pounding drummer as far as non breakup loud clean sounding. I have a DSL40 that i use for live shows and that barely cuts it. So i am also curious to know if the 20watt vs 40 is something that should concern me as well. thanks for your respone
I want a pink taco to go along with my MB MarkIV. Clean/Wet.
Hey what's up!I had a runt 50 and sold it is the jj the same amp?I love the pt 20 tone but it doesn't have a clean channel.Does the jj sound as good as the pt 20?I have a splawn quick rod I'm selling to get a jj.Sorry I'm such a dork lol!
Great Review! Exactly what I was looking for in an interview of this amp. Thanks
JBE Mode = Happy. great video
Great video Phil. Thanks for all the work you put into all your videos.
JJ pedal ?? ............... Yes please Mr Friedman !!!
4:42 You meant FX loops, right Phill?
I did a double take when he said ground loops
Wow. Just wow. And I can’t believe this has quality cab sim out so perfect for bedroom studio recording too. Exactly what I was after.
Yep they Booth Sound good, but i prefer a slinkyer Sound like the M....... Studio Classic (Mini jcm 800) less gain more bite is what I like😜
The JJ having the BE mode is the way to go I'm thinking hard in the DS 40
The bobble head played just as good as real Phil, cool
I have the runt and I love it. It's a badass little amp.
Is that the 1x12 cabinet made for the JJ mini?
Killer playing Phillip!
I WANT one of those bald bobble heads! :-)
I'm going with my 2 yr old Runt stereo with a a JJ jr!
Mr Phillip, sir. PCB direct mounted tube sockets & external control pots = cheap construction and not gig worthy amp. Oh, sorry, I didn't realize the amp is only $395.00 new. That's different.
What do you mean both have ground loops?
They need to put full size power tubes in these amps like marshall and prs did with the MT 15. Regardless they sound badass
Can you NOT adjust bass mid treble on the clean channel?
Nope
They sound exactly the same
A bit of treble would help. This tone would get buried in a full band mix.
I them both. Too much 4k. And very poky. Good but pokey on the OD. The clean on both is great
This intro might be the best sound I've heard from you.
Hey what model G&L is that. Great video. Bought the JJ. Thanks
Love the little blue bass! It rocks!
They sounded the same to me.
that's the ugliest guitar I have ever seen lol but it sounds damn good.
Hi. I have the mini dirty shirley and love it. I was going to buy the Pink Taco PT-20 to have something with a little more gain, to compliment the dirty shirley. Now, the JJ JR has come out. How does the gain channel of the JJ JR compare to the pink taco? Does it have more or less gain? Thanks
Not much diference on the gain channel, the clean on Runt is more compressed. An A/B JJ Jr with Pink Taco would be great as I planning to purchase one f them. Anyway, I like your videos, simple, short and straight to the point, Thanks!
Sounds like a compressor is pumping on this video 👎🏻
For that kind of money to get EL84 power tubes? Get a Marshall Silver Jubilee Mini. has EL34's.
I need specifications on that guitar Phil please
It’s a G&L ASAT deluxe. Dunno beyond that.
Google is your friend
Great review. Ty!
Hey man. I have the jj junior I am inquiring about the 1x12 vintage cab. Is it worth the dough? I find lots of 1x12 sound boxy and small. What are your thoughts?
Avatar makes nice 1x12 cabs and you can specify your speakers. I got their 2x12 but it's difficult to carry without help.
Hey Phil, great channel, inspiring content and I’ve learned lots. The green G&L with matching headstock drew me to this episode. Are you able to provide the specs? Is this a Ltd edition or a ASAT of some kind? I’d greatly appreciate any info you can provide. Andy
As Michel said...we’re not in the room, but they both sound very good. Therefore, it would be a matter of preference. Personally, I almost like the Runt better, but would I in real life applications? Great demo, as usual. Thanks Phil for all the input/output;)
I can tell a difference the JJrs tone when the open chords are strummed still has growl with more clarity on the open strings they ring out.Im ALL about the GAIN
The pink taco is better than both of them in my opinion.
Phil, Would you consider comparing the Friedman runt to the Victory sheriff 22? I’ve been searching and there’s nothing out there comparing these two. love your reviews on both But would be better to see them together, thanks
Both Friedman amps sound good though my monitors so like always it comes down to personal preferences.
They both sound about the same...sounds muffled.....
Hello from Italy.___what do you think about sustainer pickups
The JJ is cool, but I want a mini Phil!..... But playing a Strat!
No EQ for the clean channel....?
I currently own a PT20. But have the opportunity to trade for a JJ jr….. ugh…
I feel like I’m just missing a presence ‘knob
Hey Phil is that a Jackson Dominion on your wall behind you
Ok , where can i buy that bobblehead.?
Hey Phil what’s that blue guitar with p90s behind you? Looks awesome.
You take a runt, you write JJ on it and you have a JJ jr.
This is simply not true. The JJ JR has different pre-amp and power-amp circuits. Custom tailored mods by David Friedman and Jerry Cantrell that dramatically change the tone and feel of the amp making it sound nearly indistinguishable from the 100W JJ, as well as the addition of the JBE Diode mode / circuit that the Runt also does not have.
I don’t think the power circuit is unique and it’s using their PT20 transformer (saw that marked on another video inside the head).
My guess is that are a couple resistors and capacitor values that are different in the filter sections of the preamp...no magical design concepts compared to the Runt or other Friedman amps.
The differences in the clean could just be component tolerance.
Please do the Friedman BE 100 Deluxe!
Essentially the JJ can do what the Runt can do, but the Runt can't do what the JJ does. Got it.
Definitely can with a boost pedal .
@@paulmales1889 Good point. And personally, I usually prefer an amp with it's gain dialed back a bit and then hit with a TS/SD1/etc than no boost and the amp's gain pushed up.
@@KipCount Exactly
Is that a single 12” Friedman cab?
Nice Comparison!!! Thanks!!!
I was reading you need to turn the presence all the way down on the jj to get true clean.
I'll know soon, the combo arrives next week along with my mccarty 594
Would you be able to compare the combo versions of these amps, Phil?
Are both amps cathode biased?
dang i want a friedman they all sound great and so do you
Does the JJ Jr come with a footswitch for channel switching?
Yes, and also an instrument cable to hook it up. The F/S has an LED and the cable is detachable.
Can't wait to collab with you Phil. Just hit us up when you are ready!
You look scary
what about the RUNT 50 vs the JJ JR?
Sounds muffled?
JJ jr vs PT-20!
what kind of speaker cable do you use?
I've been using Pig Hog 5 ft. speaker cables and highly recommend them
Rockin' the Funko Pop!
Hey Phil... RE: The Gibson debacle....
Are Gibson going to do a Les Paul Godfather model?
"Don't disrespect me, you don't want to sleep with a horse head...… "
Love the videos
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang
The Friedman JJ Jr. is hard to beat for 1500 bucks. If I didnt own a 50W Splawn Quick Rod Id be all over this amp!
I miss my Quick Rod and Nitro.
Having same issue. I really want one of these JJ Jr. amps, then I play my Quick Rod and have a hard time justifying spending $1500.
@@TheRoadrunnerguy I have a modded Superlead that can do these tones but I still want a JJ jr. Damn g.a.s
🎶👍🎶
Can’t you get a PT 20 with the clean channel added to it? 🤷🏽♂️
40th JJ video.
what is the blue p90 guitar hanging on the wall?
Owned the runt, have played the JJ jr. JJ jr all day long owns the runt in every way
How are you finding lower gain on the JayJay?
@@glp046 Not really noticeable. It says it's 20 watts but I swear it's louder than a 20 watt amp. And the versatility of gain stages can really get you the full range of tones. Can do metal even and if you toss a boost on it, even more so
Are you sure the Friedman JJ-JUNIOR is not hand wired? It says on the Sweetwater website that the JJ-Junior is hand wired.
This is right from their site:
"All Friedman Amplification products are handwired to exacting specs to give you amazing tones every time you play. Premium components and attention to detail ensure that your JJ-Junior Jerry Cantrell Signature amp head will deliver the sound you want and need onstage or in the studio. It doesn't matter what type of music you're into; a premium, handbuilt Friedman amp has the tonal palette you need to create the sound you're after."
A better comparison PT20 vs JJ junior
I have this amp and it's the real deal....Don't let the EL84 tubes fool you...It is very articulate with a big wide open sound.....awesome low end thump
Ordered mine today and got a notice that they are finalizing getting ready to ship it out to me...damn I hope so !
@@rosskrause3926 Awesome what kind of cab are you going to use?
@@garyz0611 My stock EVH 5150 2×12" sounds amazing with all the amps I have tried..it has the Celestion G12h 30's Anniversary speakers and it awesome..I will look into one of the Friedman cabs but the EVH is king.
@@rosskrause3926 Very cool......I am using a Marshall 4x12 with 25 watt Greenbacks
@@garyz0611 Yeah I bet that sounds great. .I do have a V30 & G12T-75 that are put up in boxes and might try them..I do have a 4-12" that has 2 Celestion V types and 2 Mojotone BV-30V's,their version of V30's and it has sounded good with all the amps that have come and gone, but it's currently in use at a friend's house,I don't have room for it right now.
