    Awesome videos! After a 10 year hiatus, I’m getting back into flying next year. Watching your videos motivated me to get back into flying. My goal is to get into aircraft ownership as opposed to just flying for others as this time, I will exclusively fly family and friends: the most precious cargo I can ever carry. I’m saving towards my first aircraft as we speak.
    Hope your family enjoys the trip to Florida.

    I watched your video primarily because I just lost some friends (entire family) in a PC 12 crash where the plane basically fell out of the sky supposedly due to an auto pilot problem. I am so heartbroken! The final investigation is forthcoming. I am a pilot that has flown everything from a 172 to a 737, but I have never flown a PC 12. Thus, why I watched. Frankly, I'm not a fan of airplanes that are as complex as that yet permitted to have single pilot operation. In my friends case, I believe the pilot was overwhelmed when an emergency occurred. You definitely struck me as a very capable pilot, but I have to be honest with you to say that my heart was heavy and broken when I saw your daughter in the right seat. She is an extremely cute little girl that anyone would love to have as a grandchild, but not as a right seat passenger. You said she is taught not to touch the controls, but I saw many instances where she had her hands on the controls when you weren't looking at her. The distraction of having to keep her entertained and engage in her child banter is a distraction that should not be in a cockpit. I kept trying to visualize what it would look like in that cockpit if an extreme emergency occurred where you would need every ounce of attention paid to the airplane. The odds of you having a mishap are low but boy, are they sad when they do occur. I hope you have many many hours ahead of you and that your family gives you immense joy as I know they will. Please continue your well done videos but please don't include the multitasking of flying an airplane while entertaining a toddler. The viewer interested in aviation will be grateful. Best wishes!!!

    • @GrantBaker
      @GrantBaker  Месяц назад +11

      That was a very sad accident and I’m eager to see what the NTSB determines to be the cause. I’m so sorry for your loss! If you have any questions about PC12 operations please feel free to reach out via email at pilatusgrant@gmail.com
      On this flight, my daughter had her hands on the controls in two instances, both with my full knowledge, consent, and monitoring. One was the control check on the ground and the other when I let her “fly” at a safe altitude and you’ll notice my hands are on the controls physically flying the airplane, not with the autopilot engaged where she could potentially disengage it without my knowledge. I can see how it appears that I’m unaware due to editing but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

    • @randalllewis2434
      @randalllewis2434 Месяц назад +1

      The sad thing is that Larry Hannie was a very capable pilot. He just should have had another pilot with him on this long flt. When he got into trouble, he was overwhelmed, and the plane came apart on them…. There was pieces of the left wing, and fuselage 8/10’s of a mile from the impact sight…. So sad.. Loved the Nelons..

    • @Williamb612
      @Williamb612 Месяц назад +8

      The Pilatus is extremely powerful and capable, but also rather unforgiving…respectfully: your daughter has 0 business being in the seat next to you, for any reason. You are flying with 3 generations of your family in this plane, which can get in front of you easily:
      Turbulence kicks off the auto pilot
      Rime ice builds on the leading edge
      Weight distribution not properly balanced
      Plane loaded to the weight maximums: do NOT do this
      Stall speed and parameters not properly abided by
      In a stall this plane is not easy to recover from…please put your family first.
      This plane is a high speed high torque rocket, respect her 💯… you should be flying tandem with another experienced pilot…many Pilatus have gone down in the last few years…NEVER because of mechanical failure, but rather the pilot not properly abiding to the point above.
      Do not aloe this plane to be a venue for a midlife crisis

      @@randalllewis2434 Didn't know Larry but I'm sure he demonstrated cognitive abilities with no impairment. But he was 67 years old. I am roughly the same age and I took myself out of the cockpit in my early 60s not because of my inability to fly, but rather the possibility of decline in my reaction and awareness in an emergency such as the unexpected loss of autopilot in turbulence. I am very healthy at the moment but know that I would be less reactive than what I was up to age 60. I also find it interesting that the company registered as the owner of the plane is.HAYNIE ENTERPRISES INC. That company is registered in Nevada, but has not paid its required fees since 2016. That's a red flag in how attentive Larry may have been in the details of running his businesses and makes one wonder if this practice spilled over into proper attention to his airplane. It'll be interesting to see how the insurance situation plays out given that the owner of the plane is a business that has been dissolved. Not sure if insurance companies issue policies to non-existent companies. Lawyers may have a field day with this. I feel so sorry for everyone involved. The Nelons were a beautiful family.

    Having a private license and and having flown Cessnas and pipers and a good number of hours in the right seat of a Kingair and having flown a jet ranger many distractions can take place in flight. Passengers are part of flying most private pilots have passengers a lot of time family. It’s his daughter he knows her she knows him it’s not some stranger little kid in the seat. She is not a toddler I would say she’s 5-6 yrs old. It’s a single pilot airplane there is no regulations against a passenger handling the controls no matter the age. You kept positive control of the aircraft at all times and was not a concern. Everyone needs to relax and just enjoy the video

    Great video Grant. Will subscribe. We are regular travelers to KISM with a house down there. If youre regular single pilot with passengers you have to learn to turn off in your head what they are saying and asking and be ok being a little rude while you concentrate on a task and answer the question later. Staying current and simulator training are keys to being safe. Hope to catch you at KISM one day. Safe travels.

    On this particular flight, IMO, your daughter sitting in the right front seat was one of the many holes in the proverbial block of Swiss cheese. This doesn't mean you're not a great pilot nor a great and loving father. I have zero doubt that you would never knowingly do anything other than what you feel is the safest, and best, for your children & family. I truly enjoy your videos; usually, it takes me a few moments to get over my envy of your lifestyle ;) and then I'm just a kid in a candy store who falls in love with aviation all over again. I have a chronic medical issue that will never allow me to be a pilot, so I have to live vicariously through pilots like yourself and I'm so grateful for the inside look you provide us all. You're a great ambassador for GA, and I'm sure your intent on this flight was to provide an opportunity to share this passion with your daughter. I appreciate you being honest and letting yourself be vulnerable by showing the audience your processes and reasons why you did something. It improves safety by giving all of us another outlet to discuss issues, like your daughter riding up front, in a respectful and objective way. In that spirit, it's my opinion that your daughter was a distraction on this flight. Very shortly after you lifted off the ground on takeoff, you had to say to your daughter "Daddy has to fly the plane now...." - that was a distraction, even if it was only a few seconds. Again, I'm not saying you couldn't handle it, nor that you're a bad pilot - if there was suddenly an engine failure, or other immediate issue that required 100% of your focus, was having your daughter in that seat the absolute best thing to do for everyone on that flight???

    • @GrantBaker
      @GrantBaker  Месяц назад +2

      I understand where you are coming from. But if I’m busy with anything, ATC, airplane configuration, etc., the front seat passenger gets ignored, regardless of age. Right seat passengers of all ages comment in all stages of flight, not just kids. Just as my daughter stopped talking as soon as I told her I needed to focus, I expect an adult to do the same. I will admit that I probably should have told her that a bit sooner. And regarding the hypothetical scenario you posed at the end, the same could be said about many normal operational decisions. There’s risk in every action we take every moment of every day, and it’s my job as a pilot to determine for each flight what is an acceptable level of risk. Each flight will be a bit different, and each pilot has a different threshold based on many factors. At the end of the day, I believe that having my kids who are well-behaved and familiar with aviation in the front seat is perfectly acceptable. I do appreciate the challenges to my processes!

      Watching you're flights. I remember the times I had my daughter flying right seat when we were going different places. A lot of hops we took, if it was a later flight, as soon as we reached level flight, she would fall asleep 😊. I still remember those days. Not sure why people complain about your flying skills 🤔. When we were flying, we didn't have the internet to post to. I just have great memories of flying with my dad, then having my daughter fly with me as she grew up. Thank you for sharing your flying time with your family with us. Those of us who are blessed to be able to fly, are so fortunate to be able to look back on the times we were able to have our families with us and spend that time together doing what a lot of people can't. Doing two things we love to do. Be with our families and fly. ❤ We are truly blessed. Have a great day, Sir. 😊

      I disagree. She would not be a distraction for this pilot. And less likely to yank on control wheel or push any buttons. Very simple single engine plane, with ample time to handle emergencies if should occur! From another experienced pilot...

    Nice flight and great family. I must say that with your daughter up front is not safe because of her age.
    We as pilots must maintain a sterile cockpit during critical phases of flight ie: takeoff, landings.
    She should not be allowed to touch the yoke or anything in the cockpit.
    Again nice family and aircraft. I am just stating my opinion and what I would do.

    Please ensure you do the following with the Pilatus:
    a. fly with another pilot in the cockpit
    b. always keep the de-icer before you approach rime ice, or even if you speculate there might be some although there is no visible evidence that there
    c. Thoroughly de-ice the tail ailerons if it is cold on the ground…always…this means getting a ladder if necessary to spray them down, and take off immediately there after
    d. Be completely prepared to fly the plane if the auto pilot disconnects…turbulence, inclement whether often disconnects the auto-pilot and the plane can go into a stall or death spiral…rely 💯 percent in your instruments and NOT on your spatial awareness
    e. Ensure you are SEVERAL hundred pounds under weight maximums…and balance the cabin properly so it is not front or rear heavy.
    f. Do not fly this plane like it is a sports car…it has enormous torque and speed parameters, however it can be quite unforgiving
    d. Do NOT take your entire family up in it if you do not have a pilot next to you, or if there is any kind of inclement weather on the horizon, and preferably not long distance at night.
    This aircraft is extremely high performance, and without a seasoned pilot flying her she can be extremely dangerous. Statistically there have been a much higher percentage of these going down…almost never because of the plane, but rather the pilot’s negligence in doing the things I have listed above, and getting behind the airplane because of it’s powerful characteristics.
    This is NOT a mid-life crisis machine, respect her…if you are having a mid-life crisis take care of it some other way

    First mistake in a crash scenario, putting a 4-5 year old child in the co-pilot's seat!
    Dear girl, but she has no business being there as a single pilot during a flight!
    The potential distraction is far too great, AND the child is a child... it can always happen that the child touches things that are better not touched during a flight!

      The PC12 can carry a lot more payload, has a larger, more comfortable cabin, and can easily operate off unimproved runways. The TBM is faster and has lower acquisition cost. TBM also has Garmin 3000 avionics and the HomeSafe emergency autoland system. PC12 has Honeywell Apex avionics and no emergency autoland…for now. I don’t have any special insight, but the longstanding rumor has been that the next PC12 will have Garmin and I’d venture a guess that autoland would come with it if it does.

    Just watch your speed going into bad weather with this plane and known icing. We use TBMs this is not an add it's just a way to tell you that they are better planes in ways after using them for years going into known icing and some rough air. They are smaller in size, but they are strong.

    • @GrantBaker
      @GrantBaker  Месяц назад

      Every pilot, regardless of equipment, needs to be vigilant in weather and icing. Why do you say the TBM is better than the PC12 in ice and turbulence?

    Flying that type of plane with a kid in the right seat is insane. There are too many accidents lately involving whole families. So sad. Don't forget flying at night is a strike and now you got 2 strikes left. Please be careful. Btw beautiful plane.

    I’m clearly not the only one to comment on this, but I’m Blown away by your little girl in the right seat. You was a HUGE distraction to you. You are very blessed to share these experiences with your family but the level of distraction you have is deeply concerning. You’re flying a high hp complex aircraft. Be wise so you can keep flying

    THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!!! This crew is incompetent. PF is okay... more or less... looks lie he needs some hours in the sim. But the PM is just out of the window! NO CRM! No radio skills! Doesn't check what the PF is doing. No spacial awareness! She acts like a five-year-old whose daddy let her sit in the right seat. RIDICULOUS!!!

    While your daughter is certainly adorable and cute, she is a MAJOR distraction (on so many levels) and should NOT be in that seat. I am amazed you posted this video; and I’ll be even more amazed if you don’t get a call from the FAA. For your families sake, please show this video to your sim instructor and ask him/her for their opinion on what I wrote here. Please discuss pilot decision making and CRM with an emphases on the important of “sterile cockpit”. Until you get this understanding, please leave your family on the ground!

      Great Video.
      And what joy to be able to include your little one in the beauty of flying.
      Regarding the comment made about distraction; I see a pilot with plenty of spare capacity, who operates to a high standard. I witnessed Grant prioritising tasks effectively. I saw zero evidence of task saturation.
      Clearly “BJ0521” has never been in a professional cockpit environment - there are always distractions! I think the FAA have better things to do..! Happy flying dude!

    No way on earth I would ever have a small child in the front seat with hands and feet kicking, pulling and turning. Very, very risky for everyone on board. This is why the private family segment has one of the highest fatality rates. "Warning Will Robinson, warning."
