I think FIDE’s incompetence in modernizing the game of chess mirrors Sagar Shah’s arrogance of not wanting to change his ways.
FIDE has deemed that the current way things are done is more than enough, and that it doesn’t need to change. This despite all the evidence from sports around the world. The problem is Chess thinks of itself as a sport unlike the others, and chooses to live in its own bubble, ignoring the money to be made and the professionalism to be had from globally recognized sports of chess’ caliber.
Sagar Shah has deemed that deemed that the current way things are done is more than enough, and that it doesn’t need to change. The problem is Chessbase India thinks of itself as a news org unlike the others, and chooses to live in its own bubble, ignoring the money to be made and the professionalism to be had from being a globally recognized news org of chess.
The interviews at the candidates are a great example of this. Levy has chosen to interviews with Vishy and Hikaru where they are both seated and facing each other, as human beings just conversing. Sagar Shah has chosen to walk around with his selfie stick, standing behind the camera like a paparazzi and repeatedly saying how does it feel, and oh so beautiful.
If Sagar Shah chooses to internalize his chosen identity as a journalist, he will look to how journalists across the world conduct themselves (unlike FIDE). He seems to be missing the basic training that would take all of these paparazzi type intuitions out of him. He needs to understand that journalism is an institution, not just what he makes it out to be from what he randomly reads. He needs to understand, like FIDE, that he can learn from how others are doing it.
I think there might even be a bigger problem with Chessbase India’s interview style. It feeds into an Indian idea of media figures being “larger than life”. Often, you get the feeling of Sagar going oh wow, I can’t believe I’m standing next to X person. But X is just Vincent Keymer or someone random, who is a human being, and wants to be seen and treated as such. Elevating them to some type of media figure that needs to be wowed at shows a lack of professionalism, and I think in the long run it will lead to people not wanting to do interviews because of the awkward dehumanizing format. Right now people do it because you are a very nice human being and there is no alternative.
Overall, I think it is fair to say we owe Sagar Shah a lot for his dedicated work. But like FIDE, he can stand to learn much from being open to how other sports journalists and the institution of journalism functions. Only he and ChessBase India have anything to gain from it. If not, he will be eaten up by better quality productions leaving him to fend for the 15k views he gets from Maharashtra that will be very hard to monetize.
PS: Sagar Shah really needs to learn adjectives beyond “beautiful” and other questions beyond “how does it feel”. Talking to other journalists about how they do their job might help open his horizons.
You’re being overly critical of Sagar. He has his own style and his style caters to GenZ and GenX too. As far as journalism is concerned, he puts more thought into his published articles which is of high quality both in terms of the language used and content delivered.
