- In this video we are taking my old YZ85 dirt bike frame that I've had for years and converting it to electric. We are using a 72V 8000W hub motor and converting it to mid drive to solve the unsprung weight issue that hub motors have and installing the motor on the swing arm.

No video on Sunday this week and no post in the community section. Very "Un-Chris" like. Hope all is well. I didn't realize how much I anticipated these videos until one was taken away from me with no explanation :) Looking forward to an update on the "Better-Balanced, Hub-motor as Mid-motor, E-Dirt Bike" with less un-sprung weight, or the "Mini-Truck, Chain-Driven 4WD" Chris.
Cheers, Sev
this guy is like me… if i did any of my ideas 😂
And if you were an extremely talented machinist and fabricator.
@@19speedi which he isn't either of those. I mean @ratherbwelding

It's always good to know when a project is getting too complicated to continue on with it, and to know when to call it and move on to something else.
But you'll always learn something from each misstep even if it ends up incomplete.
It's good to know when to move on.
I think this was a good choice. That beefy motor needs a beefy frame to support it. Looking forward to the rest of the project. 👍
1:55 how many old projects can y’all recognize back there?
I remember the one with 2 gas tanks. I can't remember off the top of my head what it's called but I remember watching you build that.
it's sad to see them rotting there
2 stroke mini bike, homemade dirt bike (that's going back to the start), the mini mini bike??, Two speed go kart, Baja mini bike (the black one can't remember much about the red one), electric mini bike, do I see a tire from the monster go kart? There's other stuff in pieces so hard to tell what they are
Why dont you fit the motor in the wheel? Hope I didn’t miss you explaining why. Really like watching you build these vehicle’s. 👍
Looking forward to seeing what this build turns into been enjoying your videos for many years
sad that you gave up on the ebike project but it definitely makes sense. Would be sweet to see you attempt to fit that 6kw motor in a standard bike frame as a hub motor and then see what breaks and strengthen it until it isn't super sketchy
The only way to do it without breaking the bank or without putting motorcycle parts in a bicycle frame is to go to BMX, which would mean he'd have to change every part that needs to touch that chain. Not worth it, because you upgrade that and then the rest of the bike is not adequate, like the rims... so where do you stop? At that power level, short of putting the motor inside the wheel, there's nothing he can do about it. And wheel centric power bikes suck, it's like riding a bike with a sack of potatoes behind you.
I was a subscriber on here when you got the YZ85 running the first time, I think this decision to axe the electric mountain bike was a good idea to bring back the YZ85. Looking forward to more of this project, keep up the good work!
Greetings from Texas! That's what this channel is all about. Finding out what works and what does not. Part of the experience and a lot of fun along the way. Thanks for continuing to deliver outstanding content!
Be sure to wear eye protection on your eBike, a bug in the eye at 35mph is not fun. That bike is killer! I run a DIY 3Kw mid-drive with a "street-legal" switch.
Nice... Do you have videos? I want to get inspirations for my project
I think it is awesome that the background music in your videos is the only music you listen to on your headphones while working. Enjoying the build so far, and looking forward to seeing how much better this works vs. the bicycle. I believe it is going to be much better, especially once you get the gearing set up to your liking.
You could make one side of the swing arm removable and make the shaft of the motor the pivot point
Love the work! Helps knowing it’s okay to scrap some ideas, sometimes my projects start to get overwhelming, but so far I’ve pulled through!
I'm loving my newly converted bike too much.. I've done 140 miles in a week just cruising going places I haven't been.
Managed 40 miles on one charge on one of the days 👌
I'd love to have the beasty motor you've got 🤤🤤
Just converted my mountain bike with a 2000 watt hub motor kit. Best thing I ever did.
@@StefanRandall that's what mine is but it gets hot pushing 2kw through the woods and up hill. I run it on less amps now but still get 36mph on flat 43-45 on full power
@@MaNNeRz91 yeah I pretty much just commute with mine keep it around 35 or 36 mph
It’s not the shear force of the bolts that you need to worry about so much.
It’s the clamping force against the hub surface that provides the friction to keep the sprocket from spinning.
Adding some lock tight to the surface might help.
i love to see you fabricate and weld but most of your projects end up too heavy with too many tubes, would love to see you build something specifically lightweight!
I'd say his one fault with build and design is that he builds, designer as he goes rather than having a real plan. If he did some CAD and then did tests in CAD on material strength, placement to gain the most from the least weight then he wouldn't be constantly worried its not strong enough and "I'll just add one more pipe just in case, etc". I don't think he understands just how much one pipe placed in the right place can take in terms of stress and weight etc. His welds would probably go first and these days he's a good enough welder to not worry about that to much.
@@itarry4 agreed!
You didn't even mention his use or turds for materials. Seemed steel tube instead of Dom, grade 5 bolts everywhere. But he gets sh!t done
YES YES YES..... Now you're speaking my language here. I have a Razor Mx650 and I bet you'd love a small electric dirt bike like that.... Especially if you had the 72v 6000w Electro and Co kit. 😁😉
Edit: That Cyrusher Ranger is actually kind of cool... But I've never ridden one to know what it feels like to ride, but I'd love to try one out, especially for towing my son in his bike trailer.
That fully-sprung e-MTB was sweet! I want one!
Interested to see how you plan to run the pivot through or around the motor.
You can’t really just cut the end off a tap to make it a blind one.
The swarf can bind up ahead of the tap as it’s not shaped correctly.
Also you start the hole as far as you can with a normal tap to help prevent this .
Bud not to disrupt your chi or anything. But when you tap a hole bottoming tap or either. Put anti seize on the tap. Less stress on the tap plus when cutting threads it removes metal shavings while cutting. I did that for years working on trains.
Old song, "you gotta know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em" Good call!
Retrofitting makes perfect sense, the park of used vehicles is huge...
That feeling when even manufactures get so frustrated watching a person try and fail at designing and building an e-bike, they decide to send them one to put them out of their misery...
I am love cyrusher for giving you a sponsor. Glad to see it.
It would be fun to mount a chainsaw engine or similar to that included cargo rack on that eBike you were showing, since it moves with the swingarm. Id attach one of those centrifugal clutchgear reduction units made for pocket bikes and like a 32 tooth sprocket, then you'd have a hybrid bike. It would be interesting to see if the engine would charge the battery at top speed if you were giving it both throttles, or what would happen and the performance characteristics.
I'm always amazed in each of your videos.. I learn new stuff every vid.. Now all I need is a shop🤣🙃 I wanna do rc custom builds.. 1/4 scale sized stuff Keep up the great videos🤘😎
Good decision.on calling the project. The thing was starting to look like a bit of a death trap. My concern would have been the derailleur getting sucked up into the wheel due to overpowering, causing an ejecto seato scenario. I run a 750w bafang mid drive motor on my bike and I'd say it's the sweet spot for usability. Ive tried the 1000w bbshd and I found it Abit much for most applications other than off road blasting up hills.
That horn sounds like happy beepings 😂
I was thinking where you've mounted the cog to motor and used larger bolts.
That the placement had notches equally around the edge ,of where drive cog sits .
My thought ,even though ,its steel against alu was that maybe some very precise weld pegs to match the notches.
To give more bite ,lock stability.
i wanted to build an electric dirt bike from scratch just looking how you deal with projects it my motivation to keep inproving the disign on my laptop big thums up man👍👍
Knowing when to quit and move on is a skill in itself
Dude i seen the yz 85 electric conversion ! You are an amazing fabricator!!
Amazing job well done, what a lovely good young man you are , Great work on the bike build, Thanks for sharing the video with us! 😎👍
Motor should share it's hub with the swingarm pivot, as long as that doesn't make it shorter than the original swingarm.
Always a pleasure. Thank you.
Sick how you corrected yourself and said it’s for safety and you have to wear protection👊
Wear helmets guys even though they’re annoying
Can't the motor go directly into the rim with modifications? They look a close fit. Love chilling out watching your vids 👌🏼
That's where it came from. Electric hubs create too much unsprung weight.
Would give a lot of unsprung weight, and that isn't really something you want.
@@kizzmiaz Because thats where it belongs. He should get a mid drive motor if he wants it in the middle.
I think the argument was he already had that motor and didn't like the unsprung weight. Besides the channel is all about modifying and making crazy machines. Some work out some don't. I'm not a crazy fan of the electric bikes he builds and wish he'd concentrate on the buggies but it's his channel and his choice.
@@kizzmiaz it's still unsprung weight with it mounted in the swingarm
Really cool for them to send you an e-bike 👍
That was Awesome that they sent that Eletric Bike wow that's got some speed to it . I'd like to see you get a sponsor that would really get your Channel going It doesn't hurt to ask for one like your PLASMA cutter that Darn thing save's you so much time and gets you an Awesome part every time. You know sometime we have to just bite the bullet and move on lot of time put into it but you learned your lesson just move on to the next project And that's Y I enjoy watching you channel Thanks so much for having us in your shop to watch your project build's .
Chris it was cool actually seeing cyrusher sending you out that bike . It’s not lost on most of us that you don’t plug a lot of stuff and pretty much go it alone. I for one have no problem seeing you show us stuff you actually think is cool and would use . You definitely deserve some stuff 👍
After many years of watching and thoughouly enjoying your creativity Chris, is this the first time you legally took a test vehicle on the road evil grin! At 63 this way I must say I have been seriously considering a electric something for short distance, to the shops, away etc, instead of firing up my diesel van and not even getting it up to operating temperature
Obviously it depends on the peddle assist you use, but did it suggest an appropriate distance you could travel and recharge times for the battery?
You have come so far in your fab work Chris you are a credit to you work ethics and creativity, I'm so proud of your achievements
Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺
In the UK the three tap types are 'taper', intermediate' and 'plug' (bottoming).
Why not make the hub motor shafts the pivot point for the swing arm? Won’t be any unsprung weight. Besides the tire and swing arm
You're not giving up. You're pivoting when a better idea is presented.
That cyrusher frame was absolutely designed for one of the bafang mid drive kits of today, upgrade time already ;)
hate to come up with an idea now..mount hubmotor on centre with the pivot point of the rear swingarm…weight of motor suspended from frame, not on the rear swing….chain tension remains constant, no matter what position the suspension is at, compressed or relaxed.
I like the YZ85 idea, I think you would be miles ahead spending the time to mount the motor in the rear hub like it was designed for, I do realize the logistics of the spoke modifications and centering of the motor
Chris, you NEED another building dedicated to storing your projects!
I can’t believe you let them sit out and rust to death 😂
I’d donate to a go fund me to build you something
Ive been here. Bike frame to motorcycle frame for my diy electric mobility.
That swingarm looks soooo good
Man, Get you some knipex pliers. They are so dang good! Grip like you wouldnt believe.
Check out the Talaria XXX model, the battery placement and overall design seems great as inspiration.
I've been waiting for something like this.
I got the Polarna M6 E-bike. Things are SO much fun!
Chris, it’s nice to see you came
To your senses on this project. You know I’m supportive of pretty much everything you do but the electric bicycle was not a good idea. Now if we can get you to use less chains and build your own differentials then you’d be unstoppable. You have the tools and knowledge to make a very good differential so why not go for it ? You’d stop losing horsepower and you’d gain reliability.
And if I remember right mountain bike was the one that you had the problem with the chain kept skipping if I believe I'm correct that would have been so so simple to fix and I believe it could have been done without adding a single thing!!!
good decision giving up on the "mountain bike" it was never gonna feel like a mountain bike with that much weight on it
Hi, I love your video's keep up the great work!! What are you going to do with the MTB parts?
Just a second thought motor is about the correct size to just incorporate the rim/tire and a disk brake to it. Then use the engine bay as battery compartment..
It's the friction created between the sprocket and the hub that handles the torque...the bigger bolts will be able to be torqued tighter then the small ones...the sheer strength of the bolts doesn't matter, the stretch strength does...good decision
Assuming they are done up lol
Those bushes would benefit having crush tubes in them as the ware component. looking forward to more. Keep up the good work.
Here in Germany e-bikes that have no insurance are limited to 25 km/h and are restricted to 250W, so be glad to live in the USA!
4:18 1000w motor is enough, also paint the exposed steel before parking it.
Lol, you ran the video fast and didn't warn me of welding flash.
I love your videos, all-around awesome. I absolutely try building things like you. But don't have the time or materials. Now I just want to buy out grainger yo make all sorts of mobiles.
The best way to do a commercial.
lol, for a moment there @ 8:42, I thought you used the wrong tap
lol😅
I love that fat tire mountain bike it's awesome and i love the look and colors, that suspension is off the hook . Wow with those accessories man that is nice.
There are plenty of ultralight trail bikes out there with mountain bike suspension and parts...but they all use a low slung 125-175 gas engine that weigh about 35lbs.
The concept will work, just won't work with such a heavy drive system.
love these electric convertions ! keep it up boss !!!
19:31 when you mount an 1500 watt controller on this bike it will run easily 60
I really like your ideas and creativity. Honestly, i think the sponsored E-bike could have been a separate video with a bit more testing. Good Video overall, though!
Hey for the first bike idea for e bike use a haibike pedal assist motor cone with bosh battery 600 watt motor and people conversion them to auto thumb throttle or throttle tube too that would be great on your bike I’m sure you could make some plates up
❤ I love your work and channel mate 1 day soon il record my builds you are such an inspiration and I look forward to your videos 🏴👌
The trophy truck is not a simple project. The engineering is insane to get to work without extensive time and fitting of parts in forthought. This electric dirt bike should be a relaxing break from that and the bonus is he used this setup on a mountain bike so we know there should almost zero issues with this refitting to the dirtbike
I have a lot of respect for people like this that just do without excuses. Sure it takes some level of intelligence.
I live in Norway here its 250w Max and 25kmh or 15mph
here's a fun thought. Why not take two hub motors and make a 2 wheel drive bike. The wires don't have to move more than the handlebars do so it should work. You just need a controller that can handle the extra power.
This is great work, but can’t help but wonder why you don’t just have the “hub motor” laced into a wheel as a “hub”???
Chris, that hub motor needs to go back in the wheel so you can get rid of it. Buy a Sur Ron motor or something. You’re making this way too hard for yourself. Having that much unsprung weight that far forward is going to make it ride very unpredictably. The damping will be all off.
That’s a pretty cool e-bike you got there. It’s pretty dang fast for a pedal assist.
The magnets won't fly away on the bad road?
Wont be better put the motor at the pivot point somehow? All hitting force will go to the springs...
I'd say it was a Valiant effort on the bike 👏 you ever get a bug in your eye Chris ?
I didn't realize how small you are until I seen you next to that YZ 85
i was so hopping youd do the motor mod to make the axle spin instead, endless sphere has some good posts on it
This should be a allsome bike build bud cool stuff 😃👍🎉🌟🦇
looking forward part 2 !!!!
is wiser to rectify
I love your videos 👍👍
Please do a maxed out full everything etrike. There's not enough builds like that on RUclips and seeing one done properly would be awesome.
Dont forget the shock mount
I Love looking at your project
Looking foward for this, seems very interesting thing :)
What are the final bits of information on the first dirt bike?
Range?
Speed?
Charge time?
I wonder, will the motor act as a giant fly wheel at high speed, making it super stable, as like a gyroscope?
Chris going to do Uber eats on his new e-bike in his downtime
I'm just curious why you're using a hub motor and not using it as a hub motor?
Thanks Chris. For yet another awesome video. Thank you. 😁👍
Much better plan 👍
If you're revisiting the electrified mountain bike sometime in the future, get a mid drive kit then design the frame around it. Or, do a motorized Custom frame Fat bike instead with a predator 212😁
curious where the shock is gonna go
