Too Much Power? SVS 16 Ultras vs SB4000 - Subwoofers for the Garage or Home

  • I've unboxed these monsters to try out in this garage, and I quickly found out that due to the sheer size of these, the room really needs to be built around one (or a pair!) The 4000 does fit amazingly well however and flush next to my cabinet though. I think that is what I would go with.
    To purchase any of the SVS subs we carry, go to our SVS page. The 16 Ultras and SB4000 are special orders because of their size but reach out to support@obsessedgarage.com if you want to set up your space and we will get you dialed in.

    XLR uses a positive signal, flipped negative signal and neutral. Any noise introduced in the cable run will affect the negative signal and positive signal differently. At the speaker the positive and negative signal are run through a differentiating op-amp and the signal noise is removed. This is commonly referred to as a balanced signal.

    • @PaulVolcko
      @PaulVolcko Год назад +1

      Also get +3db on the signal stength to the speaker since the cable has a negative mirror signal vs 0v common on an RCA or other unbalanced connector type. XLR is great for electrically noisy environments or when you have long connection runs.

    I recently acquired the SVS pb2000-pro and 1. I did not look at the specs before I ordered it and holy shit it’s HUGE and I have a pretty good sized living room so if space is a concern the 2000pro is not the sub for you and 2. It absolutely THUMPS! It vibrates every wall, drawer, cabinet, door knob and window in my house which is mid-sized 1500sq foot single story house. I was watching Godzilla: King of the Monsters last night and this subwoofer was vibrating my sweatpants and that’s something I’ve never experienced before and it’s incredible. The biggest difference has been in movies and hip/hop music where there is seriously low hard hitting bass. Im beyond pleased with the upgrade to my 2 channel system!

    I work in a photo lab the size of a bedroom inside of a metal shop. We've blown 3 Klipsch 2.1 promedia sub speakers. I splurged on a scratch & dent, svs sb 1000 pro, and a discontinued SVS Prime Wireless speaker set. Both of them, new, from Crutchfield for $1250 after tax. I'm in that limbo where I don't know what I bought until it gets delivered.
    I was nervous on that first youtube search of the SVS sub. Instant relief, when I saw your channel- and your collection of SVS subs in the thumbnail.
    Edit: Swapped out the SVS Prime's with PSB Alpha AM5's w/ Crutchfield before they shipped. Thanks, boss.

    In our country, you can get the SB4000 also in piano black which is my preference. No problem to "take good care" of equipment with this kind of finish (always wearing fine white gloves), at least not with my current Focal Sopra SW1000 😊

    26:13 these are the type of descriptions I need lol. Currently I have dual Klipsch 120sw and in the market for a serious upgrade. Was thinking PB 4000 then klipsch just announced their new sub line but on paper it doesnt look like they will stack up to PB 16 ultra and pb 4000. Leaning heavy on picking up 16 Ultra and maybe getting another next year. If I get the 16 ultra not sure if if the 120sw will hold it back or If I should just remove completely. Hoping some reviews on the new klipsch subs are released soon. Right now, I'm itching to hit submit on the 16 ultra

    My piano black mirages BPSS210 still look like new after 23 years but the electronics in them are starting to fail which is why I replaced them with SB16 ultras These go even deeper and spectacularly much louder and when played at the same volume, distortion is comparable despite not having servo feedback like the mirages I was doubting between SVS, B&W and jlaudio but SVS have double the bang for the buck without sacrificing accuracy, quality or service

    All these are more or less overkill for me, not doing a dedicated giant home theater (well, I would if I could afford to build a new house but yea no). But they're certainly impressive. Lots of noise right now (7 months later) about the new Klipsch lineup. Not remotely the same feature set, and no actual veneer, but it does look like they came to kick some butt and take names on performance.

    Ive always wondered, ive watch thousands of home theater videos and never understood how ppl actually use these gigantic subs in small spaces like, apartments, condos or small spaces. Ive literally seen some home theaters with small spaces like a 10×12 room with four 16inch subwoofers. Especially in an apartment and not an actual dedicated home theater in an actual house.
    I still wonder what their use case scenario is.
    Im in a townhouse and only use two 8 inch definitive tech passive radiator subs and they do just fine. I just cant imagine using 16inch subs like i see most ppl doing. Ive even seen ppl using 18 inch subs in small theater spaces.

I have 2 Sub Ones from early 2000's and they can run with the best up to date subs made . They aren't neighbor friendly though , you can hear them from half a block away . The video passingly suggests "about a 20% increase in size" when going from a 13.5" to 16" driver. While that is ballpark correct for the increase in diameter (actual 18.5%), it grossly understates the effect of the driver's ability to move air. Given constant excursion, air movement is determined by surface area, not diameter. That 2.5" diameter jump from 13.5" to 16" actually creates a whopping 40% more surface area. Not surprising, then, the immediately noticeable increase in performance.

No difference than taking care of a fine piano, I wipe it off with a soft clean cloth once every two weeks or so. If you have small kids or animals it may not be for you. Otherwise, it’s like a piece of fine furniture and it kicks ass as a sub,

      I would assume the Dayton 18 is more for your dollar if you put in the time building the enclose

    • @ObsessedGarage
      @ObsessedGarage  Год назад +1

      Well said. The Dayton setup was similar to the Ultra. The fit and finish of the factory made woofer enclosure is the main reason I prefer this option.

    SVS bookshelves and center speaker
    Question due to room limitations
    Picked up 2 sealed pro 1000 dual subs, thought on coupling directly under the tv 7' from loveseat. Or I could move things and go opposite corners. First subs I have owned for inside the house. Thanks.

  • @mohammedisaa9952

    Its literally mathematically IMPOSSIBLE for this to "sound clearer"...
    What your buying is a huge air compressor...
    Consider, for it to sound "clear" the cone has to respond to the electrical signals sent to it.... this coil is not a solenoid....
    So this 16inch air pump creates a vacume in this "sealed box" when it extrudes (goes outwards) and intrudes when it goes into the box compressing the air....... that air compression and expansion is fighting against its linearity restricting its movement as its pumping air in one direction to another.....
    Especially in these big speakers NEVER BUY A SEALED BOX.....As all it will cost you is more money in electricity to pump this air.....?????? Oh, and the coil will heat up quicker as it slowly begins to warp, then the windings will begin to rub against the frame as tollerances between windings and frame have to be ultra thin to get electrical inductance from the magnet...... just amazing how anybody could sell this ??????. and what makes it worse, is that anybody could actually buy this just thinking it through

    • @mohammedisaa9952

      What your buying is a wooden subarine, if you know how they dive and rise to the surface, and the box is the tank....... crazy 🤪

    The acoustics in a garage are going to be garbage. Just buy 1 or 2 cheaper subwoofers and be done with it. You're just throwing money away installing something this expensive in your garage.

    Would you recommend 2 SB-3000's or 1 SB-4000? I will be using it for both music listening and home theater, so 50/50 on both. I listen to a lot of electronic, house, rap and hip hop music with deep low extended bass and plan on putting the sub in my bedroom with carpet flooring. Room is around 20x15ft with about 10-12 ft ceilings on the 2nd floor. It's a hard choice.
