- Well today's 10k race didn't quite go to plan but thats sometimes just how it goes. Training has been going well but on the day it didn't come together. I will take these lessons into my next races and look forward to going again soon. I always feel it important to share both the highs and lows across social media as after all thats the reality. If you enjoyed the vlog (despite me being a bit of a Debbie Downer) please leave a like and consider subscribing.

Watching a running "failure" (at a tremendous level) is so much more interesting & relatable (to me) than PBs and all smiles, thanks for sharing Ben!
Glad you found value in it all be it not quite as fun to edit ahah :)
This makes you human Ben. Thanks for sharing, this is what sports is about.
Cheers Seb
What is sports about?
@@NyelandsHaving failures and coming back from it
That moment you see you've only run 3k and you feel dead. It happens.
I really felt this
I get that after 1k lol
We've all been there mate. I had a shocker last year in a HM where I got way too excited in the first 5 kms and suffered for the last 12kms! Absolute misery. Well done for finishing.
Dw pal happened to me in the bham half just over a month ago.....went out way toooo fast ....soo fast I got a PB in 5k nd my 10k lool but the last 8km my legs were dead.....stumbled to the finishing line...its lessons to be learnt for both .....discipline is key in running
I love how obvious "don't set off at silly pace" sounds, and yet (at least for me) it happens. Every. Single. Time.
Ditch the watch. This forces you to run by feel. Try it, it will surprise you im sure!
Some days you're the hammer, some days the nail. You'll be back pounding the competition in no time
I like it. Not as fun being a nail i must say ahah :)
Not a race to forget, a race to remember. So many lessons for you take and.
Hold onto those feelings! They can empower you.
Honestly watching "failures" and seeing your response is probably better than watching winning
Good man for sharing, tough days happen! It’s part of the journey… my first race post marathon was proper sh*t… since then it’s got better, same will happen for you 👊
Thanks Andy! You’re in great shape at the moment, it’s great to see. Hopefully catch you soon :)
I think you showed a great example of keeping going when the going gets tough. Well done!
A day out in the country with family, scenic course, lovely village, breathing in that fresh air. It's all good as we can all live and learn whether its in a race or in life. Thanks for sharing with all of us your adventures. Cheers!
Rofl yeah terrible time Ben .. 😅 awesome brother you still crazy fast ..
Totally. 32min 10k! 😮
Thanks mate, you know its all relative! A minute and a half of my best :)
County champs, finished 11th. Nightmare 😂 understandable though
Oh Ben, golden rule ' start easy , finish hard, you have the speed to reel them in , i feel your pain . Dont beat yourself up too much , many more races to come. Youve had a busy week with the move too . Recover well. Take care . Still a champ 🎉
Very human, Ben. You rather won me with this one than any other vlog of you. Great attitude to finish this one, true sportsmanship. Respect!!!
Great training run. To finish in those circumstances was excellent. That feels so hard to finish those runs where you've blown up early. Great learning experience and respect for showing the highs and lows
Although you weren't happy with your performance here, I still learned a lot from this video and have taken inspiration from it, so many thanks for that, Ben. Looking forward to your next one.
Thats great to hear and I'm pleased to hear that. Thats exactly why I share such content.
Well done on sticking with it a finishing the race. I think it’s important you share the highs and the lows…it makes it relatable for us your audience. Rather see reality than a faux image. Keep up the great content.
Thank you for sharing the lows as well!

Gives me hope! Sometimes I feel miserable because of some bad runs. Good to know good athletes, like yourself can have bad days as well.
You'll bounce back no problem Ben,you're a bloody good runner.🏃
Cheers Tommy
Proper honest commentary here, Ben and so relatable to everyone here! Many of us appreciating the sharing of the "not so good" days because it's all too easy to get caught up thinking no one else has bad days!!
Good on you for sticking with it man. Lots of mental training to be had there.
Bad races and bad days happens! Never be embarrassed about that, as you said there’ll always be another race. Every experience helps and it’s a learning lesson! 😄💪🏻
It’s happened to us all. Thing is you never quite know what shape you’re in and it’s so easy to overcook it if you overestimate your level of fitness. And once you go out too fast the pace then does fall off drastically. On to the next one.
Despite your disappointment Ben this was a brilliant video and absolutely no reason to feel down or beat yourself up about it. I've had a few races like this myself this year, around the same time as yours, where they start well and then a third of the way in you realise it's not going to go according to plan - and boy is it tough to keep going mentally when you can feel the pace dropping and the legs struggling. However, always worth keeping going and refocussing your mind to making it a training run as you did and live to fight another day when you'll be all the stronger for it - both mentally and physically. Well done for sharing when things didn't go as hoped - it was a great insight and something many will be able to relate to.
Nice job finishing it. I’ve had similar and I always feel it’s important to finish it off with no regrets.
The lesson: don’t forget the basics.. Well done for sticking in there to the end
What a great honest video. I’d be really happy with anything close to those times. Well done Ben
32.xx is still a mad respectable time 💪
But like you said, you still got plenty of races to look forward to
Most definitely, looking back at it was less about the time and more about how i executed the race! Looking forward to having another crack on friday :)
Ironically this race probably will do a lot of good for heading forward. We definitely don’t go into races with the mindset of performing badly but regardless of what happens you can always learn from your ‘failures’. Great video! Keep it up!💪🏽
One of the best videos and footage so far. Nice that you sticked to the end and didnt drop out
I enjoy how humble you are. The average runner is too hard on themselves, even the best have bad days.
Considering how you felt early on, to still go and finish the way you did with consistent pacing is awesome. Dont beat yourself up, you still managed to show grit like always even if the lights were off on the day. Things don’t always go to plan but you handled that very well. Onwards and upwards ben.
Thanks for sharing Ben, this is part of racing and props to you for sticking it.
Brother, I wager we learn as much from these videos as you do from living them. It's so valuable, and I really appreciate your sharing them. And I send you cosmic waves of strength and endurance for your next competition!
Really appreciate the honesty Ben. As you said, pick yourself and go again. Good luck In the 5k.
Hey Ben, sorry to hear that your race didn't go as you wanted, but on to the next one, and I'm sure it will go better. I'd also like to say thanks for being such a great running inspiration. I've been running for about 15 years now, no seriously, and I really just plod along. I'm getting a bit older now, and haven't been making as much time as I like for running, but seeing your love of running, how you help others and are always so positive has given me a great boost and I've got back in to running now. Well done, and keep up the great work!
Thank you for sharing this! I share the same sentiments as you - going way too fast in the beginning for my 5k race and bonk at KM3. Your sharing teaches me that knowing my own effort and abilities is crucial to pacing a good race.
Many thanks for posting Ben...your 'terrible' times are still fast!...the course looked amazing....
This just looks like my last 10k race...It was a flat course so I was really confident that I could run a 4.48m/km and try to break 48m (47.59m) for a new PB. Aside from the hot weather, I also started a bit too hot, ran the first 3k at 4.40 - 4-42m/km and I ended up blowing up in the 4th kilometer. The last 3k's were a pain to finish and obviously, didn't get my PB... it was really disappointing but a lesson learned.
This is how I felt this year when I ran a 5:19 mile, my fastest ever mile pr, and then around a couple weeks later, I ran another mile race and ran 10 seconds slower, running a 5:29. Thankfully a few weeks later I bounced back to a 5:11 mile pr, an 8 second improvement. Thanks for the videos man, keep up the amazing work, and don't let the bad parts of the races (or anything in life really) get you down. It's not about if you have bad days, but about how hard life hits you, and then if you get back up.
100%! Glad to hear you rallied back from a bad result. Hopefully i can tell a similar story come friday :)
@@BenIsRunning Good luck man! You got this! Maybe sub 14:40 5k?
Another down to earth video. Good training run Ben. Despite all the races we run we can still make "mistakes".
great man for not giving it up! this is why I support & subscribe your channel
Such an important vid! Goes to show that no matter at what level you are, there’s always gonna be bad days.
Ugh I know these races/runs, they’re hard on the soul. But like you said, you learn a lot and you’ll just race even better next time. Im excited for you and your next one :)
Thanks Connor :)
Happy to see you are “merely” human like the rest of us. Still a time I will simply never run, but we all face similar feelings when we reach plateaus or go off too fast, relatively speaking of course. Love you are picking up the content frequency again. Always love following you, your story, your running, your family and Meg’s support. All great stuff to watch and follow 🙏☀️
Love that! Thanks Tim :)
Super relatable (at a level I can only dream of lol)! On the plus side, it gives you a solid fitness indicator so you can adjust and do better on the next one :)
I think we’ve all been there! Mine was last year’s Great North Run. I set off, and at about 3k, my heart rate was through the roof, even though I was running at what should have been a sensible pace. Needless to say, the last half of that run was rough. 😅
I am so glad I watch this vid. This happened to me a few times.. I'm running a race the end of June wanting to get close to 42mins
Don't sweat it Ben! As you know well, running races can turn out good, or they can turn out bad, it's unpredictable. You'll have another great race soon, I know it!
It happened to me also 2 years ago, now I am doing the one record after the other. You are a warrior you will overcome this
Did I spot a pair of superblast 2
I couldn't possibly comment...until July
Oooooooooo 👀
Great video regardless of the run (it happens)! Camera man did a great job 🔥
Good honest review of your race, good days and bad days, they are all learning days ❤
Absolutely smashed it regardless. Hardest part is turning up mate. Good too see both sides of the content tho. You’ll be back before you know it, as you will know as long term runner, every day is different ups and downs and all that. Back stronger
We learn from mistakes Ben, that's how we grow. It may be painful at the time but you'll remember next time. You're an awesome runner Ben 🏃♂️
Alphafly v1 is a really aggressive and easy shoe to go out too fast in as well. Good race either way 🤙
It's a sport of ups and downs, we never lose, we just learn, we follow Ben🤜🤛
Great 10k course and footage.
Thanks 👍
Well done Ben, sometimes you need to push the envelope to see what your limits are!
I always learn more from a “failure” than a success. I know you’ll figure out what needs tweaking and get it at the next one.
great video ben. like you said - after a break from a big race, the next one is like a test to see what you remember. keep up the good videos
One can only TRULY appreciate a 32min 10km if you yourself run.. My Pb on a 4km is 15:52min and that is 3:57min pace. My soul left my body..
All part of the sport! My guess as an ex England international runner myself would be the marathon had a part to play. 5weeks between is fine but what you do between them is key! Would be interesting to hear what your training looked like between races.
Indeed, all my training is shared on strava. Maybe a little too much of a focus on getting back to it rather than building back gradually. My guess is the fitness is coming but sharpness is a few weeks off :)
Aside from the pacing, it's easy to underestimate just how much a house move can affect a race. Still great to be disappointed with a 32min 10k, training looks to be going well - better times to come!
it's incredible the difference between your right and left leg back kick. Maybe focus of lifting your right foot higher like your left one
I have picked up that heart rate monitoring will be key for me
Great video, and great camerawork too! You'll get 'em next time Ben.
When you go off too fast and blow up, it’s a horrible feeling.
Indeed
Just weren't feeling it today Ben. I can relate. We all have those days.
A good reminder it happens to us all (although sorry it did!) I had a similar (but worse drop off) at Podium 5k last weekend, went off at anout 17:39 pace (i'd predicted low-18's for my current fitness) the last 0.8 of a mile killed me.
Did a similar thing a week last Saturday during a 5K park run in Cork when we were on Holiday there. I went off far too quickly and paid for it dearly after about 2.5K. I should know better at 66 with 55 years of running experience. 🙄 Still a good time Ben. The most important thing is that you enjoy the run no matter how it turns out. I know that is easier said than done when you are competitive.
Lovely course.
This just got released as I was midway through a 10k shake on the treadmill, soon sped me up! Thanks for your inspiration, I’m always motivated by you. Always have to remember you are only ever racing the capability you have on the day. I feel them evo’s should just be worn if running in a white porcelain room
Yes!!! I have a great taste on t-shirts! I have the same colour way with Ben!
Yes!!!
Thank you for the video, you are an inspiration (with great taste on t-shirts, obviously)!
The adidas one? One of my favourites :)
I run 5k in 28mins. You certainly haven’t failed here mate!
Enjoyed your video and your honesty when it went wrong 🏃♂️
Great attitude Ben. Enjoyed listening to you on Chris’ podcast too.
Awesome, thank you!
Still great content. Races like this just make you train harder 🎉
Well done for getting it done! On to the next one 💪🏻😄
Look at it as a learning lesson, yea the bad is you didn't do as good as you expected but it REMINDED you to ground yourself and not overshoot your effort. You already know what needs to happen next race, stay mentally sharp m8.
These races are the memorable ones :-)
Great work ben, you still did great.
Thanks for sharing your still an amazing runner wish I could run like you :)
That was an incredibly useful video to post. thank you!
Imagine being that good you were thinking a 32 min 10k wasn't good 😅 it's all relative though, get the head down and you'll smash it ben 💪
Looks like a gorgeous course Ben. You'll get it next time!
on a entire different level, and different speed, I had a similar experience in my last race (10 mile) where I ran about half the race well, then a bit of digestion trouble. Ended up with a slower average pace then my half marathon PB a few weeks earlier.
I had a very similar race as well! I went off way too quick for the first 2 miles or so and hit the wall so the rest of it was just painful!
Love these types of videos. I'm sure you'll bounce back!
Thanks for showing this! Very informative, as I have no experience of my own on running races! Edit: Also must remind, that moving is always a lot of work. It can exhaust via added volume, even if you don't move all the stuff yourself..
I think its just as important to share when it goes not so well than when you smash it out the park :) Thats a fair point but think today was more on my terrible pacing than on the move,
If you don't try and go with it sometimes then you'll never end up making those big leaps in performance. On another day you might have been nearer 30 minutes and stayed with those guys. Only had to go right that first time.
Most of my best results have been when I've ran this way but for me what was a bit of a shock was how quickly things went wrong. Usually i can maintain the pace at least into the 7-8k makr but hey ho. We go again :)
Still a great time, Ben! You'll get it next time =D Best of luck for the Friday race.
You’ll be back on form in no time! 💪
Don't feel embarrassed man, we all feel you.
2 months ago I raced a 10k post injury off 40k/week on a hilly course. I was aiming for a time around 33:30,, but after the 1st km @3:13, the 2nd half of the race was a huge struggle. Ended up with a 34:18 on a slightly long course and was willing dizzy till breakfast next morning 😅
Jack Nixon was flying 🚀🔥🧯
It is what it is Ben. Moving on to the next one 💪
Cheers David, Indeed!
Thanks for showing us your lows.
Welcome, thanks for appreciating the transparency :)
Thanks for sharing man! I noticed are rocking the new superblast 2 on warmups?
Regardless of the outcome, you did amazing. You're crazy fast. 🎉
