@@TomShredseven more ironic is that he was a classical trained piano player and a keyboardist BEFORE he became a guitarist. SInce 1984 he played lots of keyboards on VH records
I’m very happy I bought Tom’s course on how to Shred like Eddie. Even though I’m only on video 64, he’s already explained so much. Now that I’m working on classic solos like ‘Beat It’ or ‘Jump,’ thanks to the exercises I’ve done, understanding these sections is much easier. This course is helping me understand the roots of more modern techniques and styles. Thanks, Tom! I’m truly grateful for your course; it’s definitely worth it. Highly recommended!
Played this one some thirty years ago. Now I can see I didn't get much right. 😂 That first blues lick has been with me through the years. Love it. What a Genius he was! Great lesson! Great playing! Thanks.
18:50 All if the above!!! I got the course and I would highly recommend it, great for breaking down Eddies licks and learning how to incorporate them into your own playing style! Rock on Tom 🤘🎸🤘🎸
Well I know what I’m doing this afternoon, also I’d love to see a bit on how Eddie does the tapped harmonics before he goes into Spanish fly in the live solos
Wonderful playing! I am glad to hear a player at your level note the importance of tone and equipment (specifically, how to set up an amp by lowering the bass/400hz to get that thump and notes to jump!) yes, its in the hands to a point but, case in point, early EVH sounds differently from VHs last album.
I was a pinkie guy for twenty years who switched to the ring finger after watching Eddie in a video doing it at Jason Becker’s home. What a revelation it was.
Hey Tom, thanks for the lesson. Two questions for you: 1. In the second last bar, after raking you play 13p9 11 and frett the 11 with your second finger. I understand the rake is played with the first two fingers to set up the rest of the lick, but don't see the point once the hard work is done. Is there a reason why you dont revert to playing the 11 with your ring finger or is it just personal preference/emulating how Eddie played? 2. Upstrokes on the final 15h16h18 run. The first one makes sense as you move up and down the strings, but is there a reason for this as you move further down the strings? Or again just personal preference/emulating Eddie? Love your work, if possible I'd love to see a lesson for Right Now sometime in the future 🫶🏼
You did a great teaching and performing job. It is a real shame you did not develop a taste for Nuno Bettencourt because you would have made one hell of a tutor for Extreme songs.
One comment on the “hands like the hulk” G string index finger bend stuff: Ed actually did do these with his index, but the key thing is that he used a lighter G than most sets of 9s. It’s a 15 and it makes a huge difference. He got the technique from Clapton and you can see him do it in other solos like When It’s Love and Poundcake too.
I have a question tom about your picks what gauge pick do you use .60 or 1.0. and how do you tremelo pick like Eddie with the 1.0 m pick because there so thick
@TomShreds please do mean street. Plenty of people have posted the intro bass slap like riff but not many have the entire song which is just Golden from EVH . That track is attitude personified!
@@allboutthemojo I’ve just completed transcribing the entire song correctly with the correct tuning. It is with my engraver now and the complete score should be finished by the end of this month (November 2024). I’ll be happy to give it to you for free…
@AllenGarberGuitarFun thanks Allen. I'm subscribed to your channel and we've communicated here before. You've answered my questions previously about the EVH offset tunings . Appreciate it
@@allboutthemojo My pleasure…I’ll send you a link to my pdf of my “Mean Street” transcription (probably in a reply here) when I get it back from the engraver and I’ll let you know if I do a tutorial video on it…I probably will do one in the future.
You know, I am "pinky guy". My pinky may even be my best finger. But I started at playing at like 10-years-old. My hands weren't fully grown and I had to use my pinky to reach stuff, so I do have some peculiarities in my playing even 40 years later. For a while I did try to do the Yngwie thing and do the 123 thing instead of the 124 thing but eventually I realized the subtle shift you have to do with your wrist there is bad ergonomics for your index finger. I think it's best to keep your fingers parallel to the frets as much possible. Yngwie may get away with doing it that way for decades, but he's a damned giant of a man.
To be clear...this is NOT how the guitar parts on "Jump" were played on the album version. This tuning and this arrangement that Tom is demonstrating is an amalgamation of a general arrangement that Eddie used when he played "Jump" live in the late 90s and on the Sammy and Roth reunion tours in the 2000’s. It is not possible to play the parts of “Jump” correctly if you do not tune to the correct tuning from the album that Tom described. There are open string notes involved in this solo that cannot be replicated in the tuning that Tom is using.
Is there a tutorial or video (or even tab) that illustrates the differences that you refer to here? It would be interesting to compare. I usually check out whatever David Escobar has done for comparison. Both he and Tom are brilliant.
@geraldhinson Yes. This is my complete transcription of all the guitar parts for “Jump”. No one has transcribed these parts correctly before, but here is how Eddie actually played it on the album: drive.google.com/file/d/1BLCbdpTas6YGb78szzxeZ2uZGKhd6qS3 You can see me playing the solo and the rhythm guitar parts under the keyboard solo on my channel using my reissue ‘58 Gibson Flying V just as Edward used his vintage Flying V on the record. Neither Tom nor David know how to play it correctly.
@@geraldhinsonIt is 100% safe. I’ve been published in Guitar World and I would never steer you wrong-but I do understand your reluctance…the internet is rife with bad actors👍🏻

THe rolling note ending was always the best part for me
What is REALLY iconic is the magnificent SYNTH riff in Jump.
Agreed. So ironic that the G.O.A.T. of keyboard riffs was written by a guitarist 😎🎸

Wow. Soon as i thought, 'thats very Nuno-like' you said it. Nuno can rip that like @5:00 so fast like at the end of 'It's a Monster'
The solo on the record was pieced together from several takes. You can hear one cut when the tapping comes in.

How much is the E1 string action on 12 fret on this guitar? 0.5mm? :)
I have a question tom about your picks what gauge pick do you use .60 or 1.0. and how do you tremelo pick like Eddie with the 1.0 m pick because there so thick
Hey Colin, I use .60 Nylon picks for EVH stuff. Nice for the butterfly tremolo picking technique too 😎
@TomShreds thanks. it is easier to play with the .60 but the 1.0m makes the guitar louder so I'm kinda down to which one I should use
На каких струнах вы играете?
Why aren’t you playing live…
What gets me to fail at this solo is the timing. I get completely lost and dont know the 1 ,2, 3 , 4 bars are within the background chord progression
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how Tom goes from Yngwie style picking to Eddie from one video to another?! I can’t do either let alone both!
nope
