This has been one of the best boat tours I have watched on You Tube. You have somebody that knows what he's talking about because he is the hands on guy instead of some sales man that just want's to sell you a boat. It is not a clinical tour where all you see is the boat but rather the folks that live with the ship explaining their pride and joy. I wish all the boat tours on You Tube where like this. In an earlier life I just about lived all the time on the water except for the time I was working to afford to live on the water but sadly I now live in the middle of the prarries where the deepest water is the three feet in the slough. I really miss boating in my retirement but it is now out of my range of affordability. All I have is watching boat videos on You Tube so Thank You for the great video. Give me more.

I just bought my first boat - a 1973 43' Defever to live aboard. I really enjoyed your engine room tour. I'm happy to see that overall your boat doesn't really look much different than mine in terms of layout and engine space except for the forward space. I'm thinking about starting to video document my live-aboard adventures as well, especially being a single woman and first-time live aboard and boat owner! Thanks for sharing! Debbie
Nice to see a live-aboard cruiser that is neat and well organized and doesn't have a lot of stuff piled up in unused spaces. Love that large engine room that has a lot of access around the engines, somebody knew what they were doing.

Thoroughly enjoyed this walk-through. Land-Locked in Dallas TX now but lived in Clearwater for a bit in 99' and before that lived on the Outer Banks for some time and Folks lived in Marathon. My father has always owned boats. Last one was 31' Mophie Bertrum '63 model. First year of fiberglass for that make. Prior to that Stamas Yachts, Sea Ray, and the list goes on. Grew up fishing out of Oregon Inlet, 20 miles out to the Gulf Stream Awesome!!

Nice life....I lived on boat off and on for couple of years, then 3 years full-time....wish I had a first-mate like her, I was single-handed, did about 12kn miles over 2 years - Florida, Bahamas few times, then to Maine and back....often 100km offshore....I loved the life......I too "stepped up" buying boats that needed work, doing the work and moving up each time to what I would have to admit was luxury level of 57ft center line that I operated single-handed. I loved the dock life, meeting people at marinas I came in to visit. Many times people on docks gathering to watch me dock, then offer me wine and sometimes dinner while picking my brain (not worth much after the wine).

Excellent tour. I look forward to future vlogs for maintenance & operating. I had seriously considered "live aboard life" and was close to purchasing a Defever 44; but was turned off by the difficulty (my perception) of being a SOLO operator. You very quickly mentioned operating solo while touring the lower helm. If possible a future vlog could be about SOLO operating... anchoring; picking up a mooring ball; docking; whatever else would be involved. . It might prompt me to get aboard full time.

I have in the plans to do exactly what you said, as I have done quite a bit of single handing, which has included in and out of slips, fuel docks, moorings, and all of the above while being an engine down. You can definitely single hand with confidence, it just takes methodical planning.

Great videos from what looks like very nice people. Question on this episode: if I heard correctly, each engine burns about 2 gallons per hour and the generator burns about 1 gallon per hour, for a total consumption of 5 gph. 3 each 300 gl. fuel tanks totaling 900 gallons. So that would mean a range of about 180 miles without a reserve? Sounds a bit off. Did I misunderstand something?

Well, the GPH burn depends on load on the engine.But 2GPH is average for the Lehman 135. We typically cruise at 7-7.5 knots depending on wind/waves/current.

I bought my vessel for around $175k. My last boat had a cockpit and I miss having one dearly! Oh well, everything is a compromise!

Your boat is beautiful. I hope to have a similar boat one day soon. I have a question about the sun deck furniture. The love seat/sofa (and chair?) looked very comfortable. I noticed you had some rain come through. Is your furniture all weather or do you cover it up when it rains? Thanks.
Thanks so much Janice! So the sundeck furniture was actually from a friends salon on their Hatteras 63. They were replacing their furniture and were going to donate the couches, and I thought, I could use some furniture on the aft deck. I figured I would get some use out of them for a while until I could free up some cash for some actual outdoor furniture, or until they were eaten up by the elements. They are super comfy, especially when out on anchor. I initially was covering them, but after not getting to them in time before it rained several times, I decided to let them be, and I just clean them regularly. When they start to look real bad, I will get some more appropriate furniture.
Enjoyed the episode. I have the same boat right down to the baby blue countertops (currently being replaced). Your boat and mine are set up almost identical. Right now I'm in Pickwick TN, at the beginning of the Tenn-Tom waterway. I'll be heading down to Mobile Al in a couple of months and hang out in the upper Gulf region for the winter while I add bow and stern thrusters and a new davit crane. Love your channel, I will be buying a 42 to 48 live aboard vessel in a few months..what I like is knowing your background and experience and how diligent you are to share this knowledge. I will watch and learn! My first choice is a Californian 45-48 foot, my thinking is I would be a fair weather local cruiser and don't need a helm in my salon. Would love your feedback. BTW, judging your age, about the same as my son, I am 68 and have decided I'm doing this! LOL Will moor in California where I live.

What a great tour of your boat Butch. Just enough attention to detail and the tour of the engine room was especially well done. What a great boat for a liveaboard couple, how could you get more usable space in a 44 footer? One thing I wonder about, how does the loss of a cockpit affect your ability to fish or is that even a concern for you? All my boats, with the exception of a daysailer, have been set-up for offshore fishing. Can I offer a constructive criticism? Slow down the pan just a little bit. Cleavage on the thumbnail is always a good promotion for views but please resist the temptation for clickbait titles. I, for one, appreciate the numbering of episodes included in the title like you've done so far so I can see if I've missed anything. Amira looks like a great first mate, her beauty and enthusiasm and naivety are a nice compliment to your video productions. You're livin' the dream Butch. A great boat in great waters with a great lady. Show us more. Another thumbs up.
Thanks so much Kevin, really appreciate the feedback. You are absolutely right, I have looked at many many boats and it is real hard to find a 44-48 ft vessel that is set up better than a 44 DeFever. And I do really miss having a cockpit. If I could have afforded the cockpit model, I would have been all over it. Having a cockpit is certainly better for getting on and off the boat to and from the water or dock, there is more storage space, and of course easier to fish from. However, you always have to make some sort of compromise when buying a boat on a budget, and that was a compromise I could live with. We really do appreciate the constructive criticism, it really is helpful and we will be striving to make the channel better with every video. Now, we will do our best to get the boat through Irma so that we can keep the content coming!

SweetPea Jones Hi SweatPea! So, my choice to go with Tecma was a result from having experience with them on a couple of friends boats. One had them set up as freshwater fed, and one was set up as raw-water fed. First, I really liked the touchpad control. One button would fill the bow with water, and the other would add some more water and then flush the bowl. If you just need to pee, you can just do your business and then hit the flush button, which conserves water if you have it set up as a freshwater feed. The second great thing is that the macerator pump turns on a second time to make sure all waste is pushed through the line and nothing is left to sit and fester in the waste hose. The third awesome part is that the pump is very powerful! It can take down some serious business! I even had a guest recently that flushed a feminine hygiene product, including the plastic applicator, and the toilet still flushed! I had to pull the plastic out of the pump, as it obviously did not pass through the pump. And the added testament to the pump running a second time after flushing, when I took the pump apart, it was actually a relatively clean job, because there was no residual waste sitting in the plumbing. Bottom line, I cannot praise the Tecma toilet enough. Absolutely love it. I do have mine set up as freshwater fed, because I was over dealing with saltwater toilets for a couple of reasons. Freshwater tankage is 350 gallons, and we are equipped with a water maker. Also, I failed to mention, you can adjust how much water the toilet uses, so you can set it to use very little water. But of course, if water usage is a concern, as mentioned, you can feed the toilet with raw water. All in all, I can’t recommend the Tecma enough.
Thank you! We don't have a very large freshwater tank, but we do have a watermaker, so this report is very helpful. Vacuflush seems to dominate the marine market, so it is awesome to hear about alternatives.

Excellent tour. I look forward to future vlogs for maintenance & operating. I had seriously considered "live aboard life" and was close to purchasing a Defever 44; but was turned off by the difficulty (my perception) of being a SOLO operator. You very quickly mentioned operating solo while touring the lower helm. If possible a future vlog could be about SOLO operating... anchoring; picking up a mooring ball; docking; whatever else would be involved. . It might prompt me to get aboard full time.

I have in the plans to do exactly what you said, as I have done quite a bit of single handing, which has included in and out of slips, fuel docks, moorings, and all of the above while being an engine down. You can definitely single hand with confidence, it just takes methodical planning.

Great videos from what looks like very nice people. Question on this episode: if I heard correctly, each engine burns about 2 gallons per hour and the generator burns about 1 gallon per hour, for a total consumption of 5 gph. 3 each 300 gl. fuel tanks totaling 900 gallons. So that would mean a range of about 180 miles without a reserve? Sounds a bit off. Did I misunderstand something?

Well, the GPH burn depends on load on the engine.But 2GPH is average for the Lehman 135. We typically cruise at 7-7.5 knots depending on wind/waves/current.

I bought my vessel for around $175k. My last boat had a cockpit and I miss having one dearly! Oh well, everything is a compromise!

Your boat is beautiful. I hope to have a similar boat one day soon. I have a question about the sun deck furniture. The love seat/sofa (and chair?) looked very comfortable. I noticed you had some rain come through. Is your furniture all weather or do you cover it up when it rains? Thanks.
Thanks so much Janice! So the sundeck furniture was actually from a friends salon on their Hatteras 63. They were replacing their furniture and were going to donate the couches, and I thought, I could use some furniture on the aft deck. I figured I would get some use out of them for a while until I could free up some cash for some actual outdoor furniture, or until they were eaten up by the elements. They are super comfy, especially when out on anchor. I initially was covering them, but after not getting to them in time before it rained several times, I decided to let them be, and I just clean them regularly. When they start to look real bad, I will get some more appropriate furniture.

I'll be heading down to Mobile Al in a couple of months and hang out in the upper Gulf region for the winter while I add bow and stern thrusters and a new davit crane. Love your channel, I will be buying a 42 to 48 live aboard vessel in a few months..what I like is knowing your background and experience and how diligent you are to share this knowledge. I will watch and learn! My first choice is a Californian 45-48 foot, my thinking is I would be a fair weather local cruiser and don't need a helm in my salon. Would love your feedback. BTW, judging your age, about the same as my son, I am 68 and have decided I'm doing this! LOL Will moor in California where I live.

What a great tour of your boat Butch. Just enough attention to detail and the tour of the engine room was especially well done. What a great boat for a liveaboard couple, how could you get more usable space in a 44 footer? One thing I wonder about, how does the loss of a cockpit affect your ability to fish or is that even a concern for you? All my boats, with the exception of a daysailer, have been set-up for offshore fishing. Can I offer a constructive criticism? Slow down the pan just a little bit. Cleavage on the thumbnail is always a good promotion for views but please resist the temptation for clickbait titles. I, for one, appreciate the numbering of episodes included in the title like you've done so far so I can see if I've missed anything. Amira looks like a great first mate, her beauty and enthusiasm and naivety are a nice compliment to your video productions.

Thanks so much Kevin, really appreciate the feedback. You are absolutely right, I have looked at many many boats and it is real hard to find a 44-48 ft vessel that is set up better than a 44 DeFever. And I do really miss having a cockpit. If I could have afforded the cockpit model, I would have been all over it. Having a cockpit is certainly better for getting on and off the boat to and from the water or dock, there is more storage space, and of course easier to fish from. However, you always have to make some sort of compromise when buying a boat on a budget, and that was a compromise I could live with. We really do appreciate the constructive criticism, it really is helpful and we will be striving to make the channel better with every video. Now, we will do our best to get the boat through Irma so that we can keep the content coming!

SweetPea Jones Hi SweatPea! So, my choice to go with Tecma was a result from having experience with them on a couple of friends boats. One had them set up as freshwater fed, and one was set up as raw-water fed. First, I really liked the touchpad control. One button would fill the bow with water, and the other would add some more water and then flush the bowl. If you just need to pee, you can just do your business and then hit the flush button, which conserves water if you have it set up as a freshwater feed. The second great thing is that the macerator pump turns on a second time to make sure all waste is pushed through the line and nothing is left to sit and fester in the waste hose. The third awesome part is that the pump is very powerful! It can take down some serious business! I even had a guest recently that flushed a feminine hygiene product, including the plastic applicator, and the toilet still flushed! I had to pull the plastic out of the pump, as it obviously did not pass through the pump. And the added testament to the pump running a second time after flushing, when I took the pump apart, it was actually a relatively clean job, because there was no residual waste sitting in the plumbing. Bottom line, I cannot praise the Tecma toilet enough. Absolutely love it. I do have mine set up as freshwater fed, because I was over dealing with saltwater toilets for a couple of reasons. Freshwater tankage is 350 gallons, and we are equipped with a water maker. Also, I failed to mention, you can adjust how much water the toilet uses, so you can set it to use very little water. But of course, if water usage is a concern, as mentioned, you can feed the toilet with raw water. All in all, I can’t recommend the Tecma enough.
Thank you! We don't have a very large freshwater tank, but we do have a watermaker, so this report is very helpful. Vacuflush seems to dominate the marine market, so it is awesome to hear about alternatives.
