    Great series Capt Butch! Really like that you get into some of the technical details as that's what many of us aspiring live aboard/ cruisers need to know but are afraid to ask.. Also really like that you have Amira involved and your teaching her the ropes. Great to have a 1st mate that can back you up in a pinch. Wife and I are looking forward to following the channel.

      Thanks very much MV Seahorse! Amira is most definitely a stellar mate! And feel free to send us suggestions on what you would like to see in future videos that may be helpful to you.

      Chris, I am very happy to hear that you are able to watch some RUclips in the midst of that nightmare. I hope you have weathered the storm without too much damage.

    Something something ... scrub only across the grain so you don't erode the softer tissue of the teak. I once viewed a boat for sale that had a teak bulwark that had been pressure washed over and over. The teak was like corrugated cardboard, where the softer fibres had been blown away.

      Sorry for the late reply! I am back in action. Yup, I try to scrub across the grain as much as possible. I did scrub with a grain a little bit to get some really stubborn stuff, but after 6 years of owning the boat, the teak deck is still in the same shape that it was back then.

    Nice boat , do not scrub the teak , use a teak cleaner and a soft broom. All what you think is dirt coming off is actually coming out of the teak, if you look very closely at the teak you will see that it is made up out of filament type structure with a wax type filler in between , it is this waxy material that you actually are scrubbing away which gives the impression that the deck is very dirty.
    Long term hard scrubbing will end up destroying the teak, I have only ever used teak cleaner or concrete mould remover band a soft broom , the black on the teak is actually mould from being damp from the salt. I live in New Zealand and watch these videos all the time and get very jealous . Happy Cruising

      Thanks very much Frank. I have read alot about the different ways for cleaning teak, and a saltwater wash/scrub seemed to always rise to the top, and is the easiest "cleaner" to get a hold of when out cruising. However, I am interested in trying out a product called Semco. What is your preferred type of cleaner?

    Excellent job with your videos. I like how your informative style. I also like how you treat your subscriber's questions with respect providing solid answers to their questions. I would like to make some recommendations if you don't mind. A cat's whiskers for your mic would help a great deal for your sound. Also, slow down with your camera movements. It is a common problem when people are seeing everything, but the camera has a much smaller window, so it is a bit hard to follow. I hope you don't mind the commends. You are really doing a great job.

      Geoff Gelow I agree with every suggestion and observation you made. If Butch takes your recommendations to heart and alters the content accordingly we could be seeing the birth of a great new seafaring and liveaboard channel. It's like a breath of fresh air, but not quite. I hope he sees this and thinks about it.
      That being said Butch, if you see this, another thumbs up for the effort.

      Geoff, thanks so much for the feedback, and my apology for such a tardy response. I have somehow let time get the best of me lately. The tips are greatly appreciated. Right now we are doing all of our filming with the Sony Actioncam, in which they have a built in wind noise reduction feature that I need to utilize a little more. We are planning to get a larger camera that we can acquire a wind noise reducing muffler for (i am sure that's exactly what it's called). And the first mate gets a little excited with the camera, so I am working to have her slow it down a bit. Thanks so much for the comments, please feel free to send them our way anytime. We definitely want to provide the best product and content we can.

    Try a little beach sand while scrubbing with the salt water.

      Thanks very much Maj. Tom. Have you tried beach sand?

    • @MajTom-wd2yt

      Used it on a hardwood patio deck. We had an old Hoover dual brush carpet cleaner, replaced the brushes with green Scotch Pads, plenty of water and a couple buckets of sand.

    How did the dirty water flow off? Did it drain into the lower deck?

    325thousand homes that are flooded with more than that in shelters here in Houston. anyway I was wondering can you restain teak wood?

    • @AquaCultured
      @AquaCultured  7 лет назад

      You can definitely stain or varnish the teak many times over. However, it's usually a good idea to not stain or varnish teak decking, as it can do more harm than good in the long term. But, on rails and and other teak accents, you can stain and varnish aways to your hearts content. When the wood looks tired or the old varnish has oxidized, you can sand down the surface, which will bring the wood back to it's natural appearance, and then lay on the ol' varnish to get the look you want. Or you can oil it regularly to give it a nice color and not have to worry about the tedious varnishing process.

    NO! NEVER scrub teak with the grain. Rookie mistake.

      Hey Doug, you are right, it is best to scrub across the grain. I scrubbed a little with the grain to get some really stubborn stuff out. But guess what, 6 years later and my teak has not degraded one bit!

  • @tomharrell1954
    @tomharrell1954 7 лет назад

    Why don't you keep them oiled?

    • @AquaCultured
      @AquaCultured  7 лет назад +1

      From what I have read, oiling the decks just is not worth it and can end up creating more work than necessary, and even shorten the life of the deck. However, I have not tried oiling the deck as I have been warned against it, and have been plenty happy with just keeping it clean.

      Aqua-Cultured well what lasts the longest I don't know. I oil the teak dive platform on my ski boat and it's over 20 yrs old looks great. The teak on my Boston Whaler is new. I keep it oiled it still looks new . Duh that sounds dum. I just like the color oiled better. The gray don't do it for me.

      I don't think salt water gonna hurt the ocean much seeing as how that's what it's made out of.
