- Bewitched was a weird show that's managed to work its way into my brain for the better part of two decades. This is one of the weirdest subplots of the early seasons and I'm here to share it with you.

His excuse was part of the joke. Comedy in those days was not the 'logical smart' comedy you saw in later years. The whole show was based on absurdity. If this scene bothered you, don't even attempt to watch Green Acres, where every cast member except Oliver is completely nuts. That's the charm of the show.
You are overthinking this, there is nothing behind the statement "I'm colorblind", it's just meant to be comedic.

There are a ZILLION Holes in Bewitched scripts. My favorite is Samatha, who can not be two people at the same time. Then she twitches herself up as a castle tour guide & watches herself give the tour! 🤔🤔🤔

Internet rumor has it that the car in "Car 54 Where Are You?" was in fact not a black & white patrol car but rather red & white, perhaps so as to not to be identified as official NYC police by the public during filming.

More likely because red renders better on black and white photographic emulsions. Their makeup would have been garish and oddly colored too but that isn't because they were all punk goths.
From what I've read about CAR 54, the NYC cars were green & white, not B&W, and green looks closer to red than black does.

No absurdity here, it makes total sense ! The tv was in black & white only because at that time, this was no other way around ! But the real world is in color ! He was in the real colored world ( still, we know it's a show... ) but it's not because the image on a tv is in black & white that their lives must be interpreted in black & white ! He is color blinded while his wife sees the world as everyone sees it !
But the different texture in her hair makes it very different for him while a change of color makes no difference at all ( colorblinded ) !

It's basically a gag saying that men don't really care about what their wives look like as long as they look normal. 😂😂😂

She said he didn’t notice her when she wore the platinum wig and the blonde wig. A color blind person could not tell the difference between the two. There wasn’t anything said about him not noticing her in the brunette wig.
BEWITCHED and everything else was B/W until '83 when my folks finally got a color set

Just a quick comment from someone who is colorblind. Most colorblind men (women are rarely colorblind) can see color but have difficulty differentiating between shades. I, for instance, have difficulty telling olive drab from tan which occurs at a rate of 1 in 10,000 color blind men. Rarely someone has significant color color loss, but never total. I remember the clip above and recall the various wigs she wore. The scene is funny but truly makes no technical sense. One note, it seems that only women have matching outfits. With us men, blue is blue - colorblind or not.

Your overthinking the joke. It's a riff on the stereotype husband, especially so during that time, was largely uninterested in his wife. That leads to an escalation of absurdity on the wife's part leading to the outlandish hairstyle in the conclusion. Because the stereotype of females, especially for the time, was that they would do anything for attention.
Good thing everyone is here to point out to you it's a joke, otherwise you might have missed it.

You dont understand how original film equipment worked. Black an white wasn't a filter it was just what was able to be captured at the time. Thats why the Adam's Family house is actually painted Pink

Part of the joke is that Abner is convinced Gladys has gone 'round the bend, moreso since the Stephenses moved in next door. So his responses to Gladys are frequently nonsensical and dismissive.
The other part of the joke is that you are completely devoid of humor.
