- At least nine people have died after flash flooding and tornadoes hit the north-eastern US, local media report.
Some people were trapped in flooded basements of their homes, while one body was found in a vehicle that was swept away.
The governors of New York and New Jersey declared a state of emergency, and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called it a "historic weather event".
At least 3in (8cm) of rain fell in just one hour in New York's Central Park.
Almost all New York City subway lines have been closed, and non-emergency vehicles banned from roads. Many flights and trains out of New York and New Jersey have been suspended.

The majority of underground subway stations are below the water table, they rely on pumps running 24/7 to keep the system dry, but the pumps send the water into the sewer or storm drain system. That much water in so short a time overwhelmed everything.
Not a good time to travel the subways during heavy rainfall. :(

@@marilougo6084 the city is not working on a plan to evacuate trains at the next station if rainfall gets extremely heavy. And I expect every New Yorker to complain about it, “this isn’t my stop!”

When Ida passed us a few days ago as a tropical storm causing damage to crops and property, little did we know that she would have developed in such a monster. Sending comfort and strength to all those that have been affected 💫.

I'm in Michigan, hurricane Ida just passed south of us near the Ohio river moving towards Pa and NY. This was stronger than Katrina!!

Ok I get that they're only going to cover the major cities but NJ literally got a tornado as well as the flooding. Also our Jersey shore got hit the worst during Hurricane Sandy, which is why it wasn't as severe in NYC.
We have a 120cm average annual rainfall and I have not seen water flowing like a river .. why is it that NY hasn’t planned well for draining water?? This is a major problem if NY and NJ doesn’t plan soon…

i saw a ticktok where a man was walking in his own basement with water just above his knees. Then the basement wall caved in or seemingly dissolved and all the water came from the other side of the wall rushed in. It created a rapids effect pouring water in and pushing all basement furniture, outside trash, and the man into a new exiting water flow. Everything along with the man got washed away 😖. It took everything outside the view of the camera. Assuming he posted the video, I hope he made it out.

The weather forecasters warned of the potential for excessive rainfall across the NE as Ida moved up. My question is if I who was sitting in my home in SC saw all these warnings repeatedly, why then were the people ahead of the storm's path not WARNED loudly and CLEARLY by mayors, governors etc! It should have been all over social media, all over ALL news channels, and even perhaps police etc riding through NYC areas with loudspeakers WARNING all of this terrible carnage. My heart goes out to all people who have been impacted in the worse possible ways from this storm. Better warning systems MUST be put in place, we have the technology to inform and I am left wondering why there was such a failure of information.
