  • In this video I set up an HP Z600 workstation for use as secondary system to capture game footage and for basic desktop use through parts purchased on eBay.

Nice review, I put a Z400 together that is running TrueNAS. The 400 is a great unit and I saw the Z600 for sale locally for $40. This review helped me decide that I really don't want it :) Thanks for the video!

I've just picked one up in the Uk with 2 x monitors for £ 35 looking forward to upgrading it over time

That's a sweet deal, I'm sure you'll turn it into a nice rig

I got an old HP Z440 for $230Au on eBay. Put an HP Turbo pci-e nvme adaptor and nvme in for another $60 brand new. Upgraded the ram to 64g from 32g for $50. I kept the k2200 4g Quadro. It goes really well for an old hag.

That's aweosme, I've really wanted to get my hands on the later *20 and *40 models but I don't really have the space to house them right now and also need to save money. I will visit the Z840 someday though.

Thanks for an interesting analysis. I bought one of these in 2022 with dual processors for photo editing. However, Lightroom benefits little from the dual processors and does not use the GPU. Besides, the machine is rather slow, energy hungry and noisy (which all previous reviewers denied). I hardly use it anymore, having picked up a HP z240 for a better price. Also, the z600 is not supposed to run W11. So it seems like a dead end to me. (I would gladly be corrected on this point, though.)

I agree with you on the dead end comment. I would to get into the later gens like the 240 you mentioned but don't have the space and can't warrant the cost for a video yet. I will probably in the future though.

@@haedenshardware Z600 is such a beautiful piece of engineering. I really liked tinkering with it and I still think about possible uses for it. But somehow, my home is getting clogged with old HP workstations. Heating a room, perhaps???

I can confirm, Z800 is very noisy, but Z420 was ok

Got one of these for free today and i have no idea what to do with it. I have a nice gaming pc, and I converted a hp s-1115 into a plex server already.

That’s cool you got one for free. Maybe you could set it up as an old retro machine with Xp or Windows 7 like they came with. I found the old install discs for these machines on archive.net and got Windows 7 Pro installed on my Z400 the other day and pulled all the updates from LegacyUpdate. There aren’t many more options with it since it’s low on drive storage bays. I’m sure you’ll find something to do with it soon though.

There is one of this for 189€ with monitor and keyboard + mouse included, 16 GB RAM and 500 HDD, I was thinking about getting it to convert it into a server but idk ñ, do you think its worth it?

Honestly no. With the slow limitation of SATA on these machines, you will be limited even if you swapped the slower Hard drive for an ssd. Odds are the keyboard is also a cheap old stock unit as well. I would save your money and either wait for a deal or search for a newer machine.
