    Video is a couple weeks old.... got to the beach with kayak in tow right after sunrise, drove around looking for 50lb stripers leaping out of the water but instead saw a whole lot of nothing.. drove around with Tenzin for a little while searching for any sign of life worth launching the kayaks for... found the fleet and I scouted it out from the beach.. It didnt look to promising.. Romo and Mike arrived.. we got out into the ocean a little before 9am... penetrated the fleet and found they were working a huge school of peanut bunker with very few fish on them, didn't see anyone hook up or any bait spraying, a couple hours passed, the fleet disappeared, started finding little pieces of life here and there, Romo got a nice Bluefish, there were some 24"-30" Bass working some peanuts in tight... it was basically dead all over out there and the only life we found was tight to the beach. Decided to try to find some structure and tog fish mid afternoon... caught a short.. then lost a drag puller (which I didn't have on video), before seeing the birds come back to life. Chased birds for the last hour of the day, they would pop up here and there and move quickly but I caught several bass and a bluefish on topwater before the day was over. Luckily the Bluefish I caught was able to destroy my waders while I was unhooking it. I missed a lot of blowups out there, the fish were doing their typical "hit the lure a bunch of times before actually eating it" but by days end I caught enough fish that I was semi satisfied... until it was time to go in. The waves/swell on this day were a little dicey and thanks to my poor timing I caught a nice wave which flipped my kayak, and lost just about all of my tackle.
    From the beginning of this day, after seeing dead water everywhere and then seeing the one fleet.. I wanted to bail on the striper persuit and drive another hour to try to get on some big tog, but I went against my better judgement and paddled the many miles and took a ton of casts all for some short bass and an average bluefish, destroyed my waders, and flipped my kayak.. but in the end, it was a beautiful november day with my friends on the water, even tho the fishing was tough it was still fun and I have no intentions to stop the ocean kayaking
    Luckily the beach bite lit up in the days preceding this which you saw in my last video.. I have a few days of footage to sift through but those videos will be coming up shortly. After editing the epic underwater blitz video I have been facing some serious lack of motivation to go through all these vids and put together less epic vids than that last one.. This here video took me a few days to piece together.. some kind of writers block.. editors block?
    Hopefully you enjoyed watching at least parts of this slow day of fishing and can laugh at my misfortune as I roll through the surf.. This was my first time "turtling" as they call it, and I should really be better prepared for this, every time, with leashes for all my rods and waterproof containers, but if you havent noticed by now, I am lazy and irresponsible and always put forth the minimum effort into maintaining my gear and well being... I dont think that will ever change. Luckily that box of plugs didnt have too many good lures in it...
    Romo also got some footage of me flipping which you can see on his channel here - / romo7493

    OK, some hints from somebody who surfs the ocean waves with a 5m ocean kayak.
    0. remove anything that sticks out from under or at the side of your boat
    1. get your paddle out; you don't have any support otherwise (learn the low brace, it's easy, only required for breaking waves in that kinda surf)
    2. you need to keep calm and time your run, which should be easy with the low frequency waves - wait a bit for the big waves to subside
    3. let the last big wave go under you (paddle and lean back if it decides to not do this, and start again), but generally you want to have some forward momentum for step 5
    4. follow that wave and strongly paddle straight to shore, note that the wave will nicely suck you in if you stay right behind it; and without speed you cannot control your kayak
    5. get out once you are about knee deep and walk the kayak in, grabbing it at the back so you don't get run over by your own kayak when hit by a wave, the problem with beaching is that a wave may still tip you over: get out fast and clean
    Wear surfing gear, not fishing gear, and include a PFD (there are great ones for fishing with many pockets). With such nice weather, first take a swim in the shallows, so you know you're safe if you get tipped over. I just took an ocean dip at 15 degrees celcius; if you cannot rescue yourself in the water you're going to travel in: don't go in your kayak.
    Anything not waterproof, tied to the boat and preferably floating should be considered lost before starting any journey. Even if you can afford to lose your stuff, please don't litter the ocean.
    But most importantly: practice without the fishing stuff. And keep doing it, because trust me that this quickly becomes fun and addictive.

    if you're unsure about landing in the surf, get your paddle and paddle in backwards. You'll be able to see the waves and deal with them accordingly while working your way back in. You won't get surprised by a bigger wave since you're looking out to the ocean. Always keep the nose of the kayak pointed right into the waves, you cant flip this way. This method is much slower but its also very safe

    Dude, your paddle is your friend when coming in through the surf. Don't ever come back in with your paddle secured to the side of your boat. If you get caught by a wave like that, you will get sideways just like that. It's unavoidable. What is avoidable is flipping as a result and losing your gear. Pro tip, when you get sideways, you just stuff your paddle into the wave and lean into it. The paddle will act just like an outrigger and allow you to brace yourself enough to prevent the roll. Those were tiny tiny waves. I promise you that if you practice what I told you, you'll never be scared of coming back in with the waves like that again. There are plenty of videos showing the technique I'm talking about. Good luck.

      Or if the yak is able to go in reverse, point the nose into the waves and peddle to shore backwards will keep the yak stable even if a crasher gets you, it will more than likely jet you to shore as opposed to rolling the yak.

      Mary Ann Simpson if you get tangled in a rod leash, then its way too long. Mine are there to secure them in rough seas. Never intended to be used while fishing. Should be long enough to take the rod out of the rod holder and remove the leash. Not to supposed to be long enough to lay the rod across your lap with attached. Paddle leash should float and be thick enough to not get twisted and be able to tangle you if tossed. This is why I stay away from home made safety gear.

    • @unclebusterbrown
      @unclebusterbrown 7 лет назад +6

      Mary Ann Simpson put a small eye bolt in the bottom of your rod and attach a float on a short line to that. Long enough you can still put it in the rod holder but not so long you will have line in your lap while fishing.

    I'm not piling onto the criticism-train, suffice it to say that every kayak angler flips and that is usually the point when they get smart about leashing their gear and preparing themselves better. An expensive lesson, but a necessary lesson nonetheless. Don't give up, get prepared and get back out there!

Am i missing something? I only yak fish lakes so the waves pushing me to shore aren't capping like this. I guess what I'm really asking is "If you weren't going to nose straight into the beech with the break, and you clearly weren't trying to capsize, what WAS your plan for getting to land?"

    A few basic things:
    #1: Ditch the water proof gear. Your IN the damned water. Just go with it and get wet!
    #2: When you paddle in, just paddle straight in and ride the waves and lean back. I've ridden 5ft breakers in my sit on top kyak!
    #3: Put a lid on that bucket! They only cost about $2.
    #4. You might consider installing a long cloth wrap on the sides of your kayak. Before you come in, lay all of your poles and gear down in the cloth, wrap it up and secure it to the kayak. That way if your boat flips over it doesn't become a yard sale in the middle of the Ocean. It'll all stay together as one piece.

    As a surfer I cringe at the lost gear when watching videos like this. We are on kayaks people!! Let the wave pass you - then follow it in while laughing at your plastic navy friends strewn across the shore line.
    They will be watching in awe as the back of your wave pulls the yak along in the flowing current. Let alone if you have peddles and a paddle it is WAY easier to get in that spot the whole way to shore -depending on your conditions of course.
    Hope you have lost less gear since this video.... "keep the seat side up".

      Never Mind Hey, YOU said it. Didn't look too gnarly to me. I've NEVER kayaked but I would have TOTALLY surfed that one in with my mad skills and brass balls. Anyone who pitches all them sea monsters back is a dirty tree hugging hippy that needs a bath anyway.

    • @steveklick
      @steveklick 7 лет назад +3

      Neil Armstrong You would not have surfed that one in. It was to small to surf but big enough to tumble him. He probably would have been fine if he would've taken it head on, but I really don't think he's that dumb because he did it a few times, which leads me to believe with other factors that this was basically staged as many RUclips video's now are. One little note I would be careful with your tree hugging statement it's really not as accurate as the confidence you've placed in it. I'm not saying your wrong, you've just basically mashed two incompatible resolves together and called them something they are not. This bothers me to some level because I love nature, but human interaction with it is unatural, so it needs to be managed, or there basically wouldn't be nature extremists or non extremists because there would basically be nothing to be extreme about one way or the other cause it would be gone. See what I mean? Also sometimes, many of the times, I go fishing and release fish because I don't want to clean them and store them and think about it and cook them, I just want to go out to nature and practice my skills in the art, just to get the experience and keep up. I'm sure you can understand that?

    You usually cant just float in between waves, the undertow will start to pull you back into the wave anyway. Ive got a hobie and take my fins out to keep from damaging them. Youve got to use your paddle to as you drift in to correct your kayak when it starts turning. You can use the paddle as a brake and steer yourself. as long as you stay straight your ok. if you start turning sideways your over big wave or small.
