It makes me feel better knowing I’ve come so far after my surgery 3 years ago with no therapy or medication. My ankle might never be the same but I’ve done the most I can possible on my own to help it heal and get back to as “normal” as it can possibly be. Water aerobics and religiously tapping my foot to the hardest drum riffs that would pop into my head made it possible for me to get where I am now and I’m grateful my recovery went as well as it did. Best of luck to anyone else recovering from this specific injury it’s a pain in the ass but you can get back to 100% if not past that. Don’t give up!!! keep going!!You got this!!!

I'm now two months after surgery, but a couple weeks ago I had the idea of beating my foot to death listening to music. It was the most pain I felt since the day after surgery. I started crying from the pain and kept doing it for another hour. I can almost "walk" with one crutch now. Going up and down stairs is easier than walking... I only use a crutch for stability. This is the first time I've seen a comment or anything mentioning music. Hope you're doing better now

Stumbled across this video. I broke my fibula and foot (grade 3 high ankle sprain) from a skiing accident Jan 2023. It's almost 6 months since surgery, had a plate and screws similar to yours and two tightropes for my ankle. For day to day routine, I'm pretty much back to normal. I'm learning to run and jump again. My scar is still deep red and a weird tingling sensation when touching the scar or top of the foot.
    Hope you continue recovery.

i broke my ankle end of may so it’s almost also been 6 months for me and i can relate so much to this! my scar is still a bit deep red and the tingling sensation is evidently there as well. However, running and jumping are still very hard for me. Seeing you posted this comment 3 months ago, i would love to hear about your progress when it comes to jumping and running, as well as dorsiflexion which is making me suffer most these days🙏🏻

@@Randilynn66 I had two cast on. Each one was about 3-4 weeks. By the time the second one came off which was probably about 7-8 weeks, swelling pretty much went away, muscle atrophy was my concern. It hurt to walk as there was no muscles holding the foot up.

I'm glad you are doing so well, and it make it easier to hope that it is possible for better days to come! 💝💐
I am 15 months in recovery from a trimalliolar fracture to my right ankle, too. I have noticed that my ankle has gotten worse lately, with extreme pain certain days, and require crutches. It feels like something has loosened. I can not jump or even point my foot to go down stairs. I go down stairs with a stiff 90 degree ankle. I will also get rid of alot of shoes with heels. I am aware that those days are over. I called the orthopedic doctor and got it xrayed. I was right, the main long screw through the tibia and fibula had started to wiggle and carve out the tibia, with "bone gravel" around it, and also making a havoc of pain around the main area and up through the whole calf. Also, the 2 screws holding the inner ankle, still cause a pinching and horrible pain. On the latest xray, I can see that the screw heads seem to have been scraping away on the talus. So I am waiting to get an appointment for screw removal surgery. I hope that will help my pain and be able to get better movement in my ankle. I'm thinking about all you guys out there struggling with this injury from h*ll! 👹Wish you all a good recovery! 💖

I've been watching videos about people getting the hardware removed. Seems the best option is to get it removed as soon as you can. I don't see why anyone would want to try and leave it permanently. No matter what anyone says, that's a permanent invader inside a bone and it would make sense the body is always going to be wanting to grow bone there. But... just like a lot of stuff we do these days...

I’m 60 and it happened to the day after thanksgiving 2019 surgery Dec 4, 2019. I’m a slow healer. I have been trying to be normal forever. The tightness in around the area is every morning. The rubber band feeling is one I have complained about. I’ve settled into this leg hurting for the rest of my life. Oh I did mine with a foldable scooter it folded up on me. The attorneys wouldn’t touch it bc of the company that sells it. Lost my retirement money bc I lost my job after this accident.

Hi, sorry to hear what you have been through, it must be a very tough period of time. It maybe a good idea to do some gentle physio exercises and see if it helps to increase the flexibility and ease the pain. My physiotherapist also advised me to massage the ankle with some arnica cream everyday to break down the scar tissue. It took a while to see the difference but I think it helped in my case. I hope you will feel better soon and all the best on your recovery.

I had the same surgery six weeks ago, I am ready for therapy but since the bones aren’t completely fused yet my doctor said to start putting 25% of my weight only. My physical therapist did an evaluation yesterday and had me move my foot to see how much mobility I had, I hardly bent it and I had a horrible painful night. Six years ago I had a seven-level vertebra fusion, I was paralyzed from the neck down for a year after the surgery, however thanks to (excruciating) therapy I can now move all fingers, eat by myself and even walk without the assistance of a walker, It took 12 months in a rehab hospital and 18 months outpatient to be 100% independent..well about 85%. I do hurt sometimes but I’m still going to therapy and swiming so I can actually say I don’t hurt as bad and as often as I did the first five years post surgery. As of my ankle unfortunately it will take time and pain though . . . We’ll get there 🙂

I was told today that I can start putting pressure on my right foot. I’m trying to do some stretching, moving my foot up and down. My foot is really tight but I’m trying to stretch it as far as I can. Not sure if it’s due to scar tissue or just being set in one place for over a month. One part of me wants to be brave and walk but I’m still unsure at the moment. It feels like I’m pretending to walk. Thank you for giving me hope that recovery is possible.

Hi Nathan, congratulations on starting the weight-bearing stage of the recovery! It will take a while until full recovery but it is a big step forward :) The scar tissue definitely played a big role. My physiotherapist recommended me to message the skin around the scar tissue frequently to break up the scar tissue and I did it ~3 times a day. I made another video showing the 11 days of progress after I started weight-bearing: ruclips.net/video/KCZ1JDeogoM/видео.html. Hope it helps and hope you will have a speedy recovery!

I have 2 plates, numerous screws and a pin on top of the foot angled into the ankle. Since week 7 when my surgery had healed and I was out of my surgical boot, I returned to Aqua robic classes twice a week. I took it easy, but exercising in water really helped, plus I was doing a lot of Physio myself. After 6 months, I returned to lane swimming and although it stung a bit, I found I could do the breast stroke without too much nerve sting. I do walk small distances without pain or swelling, but a 2k walk does cause me some discomfort a swelling, mostly the discomfort is in the area of the pin on top of my foot and the swelling around the outer ankle. I’m wondering if I should ask to have the pin removed in the hope this will give me better flexion without the pain when out for am2k walk. Does anyone have any experience similar to mine, or has had any of the metal removed. I would love some feedback. TIA

I don’t know why but I hope it gets better with time. I’ve also felt some strange sense towards the flesh inside my ankle. It’s sharp and it’s almost tickling. Could it possibly be the screw inside that hits the other side of my foot?

Hi Shailesh, sorry to hear about your injury and I hope you will have a full recovery soon. I actually haven't gone back to bouldering since I broke my ankle, but it was mainly due to Covid lockdown and the mandate on masks. I also need to look for a new pair of climbing shoes since my shoe was cut in the hospital. Since the Covid restrictions are easing now, climbing and bouldering are definitely on my to do list of 2022!
Regarding the tingy numbness, I remember I felt the same after the surgery. When I poked or touched the area near my scars, I could feel the sensation but it also felt like it was anesthetized. I remember asking my physiotherapist about that and he said it was normal. I stopped paying attention to it and the numbness went away naturally. I think it will be good if you can check with your physiotherapist too. Hope it helps!

Uneven payments, random weakness in leg that leads to constant failed steps, stairs, standing or walking too long, swelling, occasional burning feeling and pain thats relatively similar to the moment in which I broke it but then turns into an ache! It was just a big mental relief to get rid of it even though I did thirty days of rehab again afterwards. The ankle was dislocated and fibula was broken at the end of the bone. Of any injuries I've had it turned out the best. Thanks for your interest. I hope everything goes the best for you. Your ankle looks good though. They did a great job it looks like.
