According to his supporters, this is a story of a brave, selfless Hawaiian who risked his life surfing large waves and passed on attempting to save his crew.
I never met you Eddie, I have only heard the stories. From an old man surfer to one forever young, Thank you for your inspiration throughout my life. To the Aukai family. So sorry for your loss, so long ago. I live on a distant shore and can tell you that Eddies spirit has touched these waves.
I'm lucky that I saw eddie when he was working and surfing the bay. I was sitting on the beach and watching as eddie surfed a wave in. Eddie ran up the beach with his red gun. He was intently watching as a black guy that was out was trying to paddle in through the shore break. Eddie would wave to the black guy to retreat back out because a set is comming! Finally, the guy got in, after eddie guided him..through that mean swamping shore break....man, I'm happy I saw this act of kindness! aloha
Although eddie is gone his spirit and legacy will live on forever. A true Hawaiian. My family is Hawaiian but living in Australia and even here on the coast of aus everyone knows eddies story and keeps it close to their hearts. When I was 3 years old my uncle first put me on a surfboard that had ‘Eddie would go’ written on the nose. Every board I’ve owned since then has the same thing. Eddies story was one of the first stories I learnt and I live by ‘Eddie would go’. Rest In Peace Eddie.
This is so sad. Eddie is a hero. I live in Honolulu and I've been to Waimea bay several times. The waves can be pretty high. One time my wife was wading in a tide pool when a rogue wave came up over the side and slammed her into the rocks. She came out bruised and bleeding. This was on the North Shore. Eddie saved hundreds of lives up there. He was truly skilled and talented at what he did. True to himself, he set out to find help for the capsized crew of the Hokule'a and was never seen again. I believe he is at peace in heaven now. I have a shirt that says, not Eddie Would Go, but that Eddie Went. He is a true Hawaiian hero. Liked and saved.
What a beautiful story of Eddie. I am 74 and never knew the backround of the Hokulai'a incident. I remember it being in the papers. Eddie and Duke are watching over Wiamea. I always enjoy watching the Eddie contest online and the next generation coming along. Nowadays there are float vests and waverunners and it's still hairy. 🔜🇺🇲👊
Eddie went! Much Respekt to THE aikau Family. After Fishing out of Honolulu since 1996I've learned that the waters around HawaiiCommand great respect, beyond the contrary,It's not always flat and glassy weather, the natural landscape of the islands channels produces wind tunnels (blowholes) thruThe passes, prodominatly strong NE trade windsWill intensify when channeled thru the steep turain of the mountains meeting the sea,I've xperianced 50-60 ikt winds within 10 miles off the islands, then watched it drop to 10kts after crossing a wind line and entering protected waters from a natural wind break, usually a mountain or geographical anomaly, fishing from Alaska to New Zealand , some of the worst seas I've experienced were between maui And big island, close to were Eddie met his fate,His family member(nephew) kimo aikiua was my crew member for many years aboard the "F/v. Marine star out of Honolulu,he was a great guy and one of the hardest workers I know , Thank you eddie foot your sacrifice,And stillvwatchingvover us.}+}+}~~Capt,William winn,Marine Star,Ocean Pearl,Princess jasmine2,seatrail,missjane,Rachel,golden sable,Hokua.and kimi 1,,
+dallas sanders Tears rolling down my cheeks what a guy. A true hero what a inspiration. It is a long way almost nobody could do what he attempted > Moma Aikau please don't cry.
I would have to agree with you, but we do not know exactly what were the sea conditions. If the waves could easily destroy that boat, even superman would get tire of paddling against a current with big waves breaking at him. Paddling 12 miles with good conditions its pretty hard, now Imagine on a hurricane.
eddie aikau was a living legend, and not just a surfer but a waterman. sad though it is that he died, it was a fitting way for him to go, always thinking of others, a hero. fuck all haters.
really strange that a pro big wave surfer and lifetime lifeguard, couldn't paddle on a big board with a leash attached 12 miles to shore... I think eddie was murdered!
Rule number one of ocean survival, stay with the group. No one is superman. 10 miles in high swells up wind? What about the current? Even in a canoe it would be hell. Anyone here ever paddled more than 2 miles without food or water? And the second you stop paddling, you backslide. Sisyphus had it easier.
etihwttam the point is that he went. He tried to save these people regardless of how dangerous it was. He wasn’t thinking about himself, he was thinking of them. We should all hope to be as good of a man as he was.
I think he got killed by a shark. There are many tiger sharks near shore and even more out deep where he was paddling trying to get help. He was a sitting duck
Eddie Aikau. He was a true hero, not just for Hawaiians, but for all people.
The will of aloha Eddie gave us great pride
if i'm one tenth the man eddie was... all will be good
500 rescue attempts 0 deaths. That man is in heaven surfing swimming and fishing
