  • Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau chronicles the remarkable life and times of the late Eddie Aikau, the legendary Hawaiian big wave surfer, pioneering lifeguard and ultimately doomed crew member of the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokulea. With its rich combination of archival imagery, dramatic reenactments, contemporary interviews and meticulously researched historical source material Hawaiian is a compelling examination of the tragic decline and extraordinary rebirth of the Hawaiian culture as personified by a native son whose dynamic life and heroic death served as inspiration to an entire spiritual movement.
30 for 30 'Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau' premieres October 1st, 8pm ET on ESPN.

About 44 years ago, I was 16, and body surfing Waimea on a big day. The waves were increasing in size and all of a sudden the people on shore were standing and pointing out to sea while shouting "swim out". Myself and two men swam out to the middle of the bay to avoid the dangerous breaking waves. Eddie was lifeguarding there that day. He paddled out on his long board and carried us in one by one waiting for the lull between sets to safely take us to shore. It felt like a long time, for I was the last one in, and as Eddie walked me to the parking lot he scolded me, I shouldn't have been out there. Happy and exhausted, I thanked him for being there that day. Thanks Eddie!

I hope Eddie scolded those two men for jumping on the longboard first.

Surfing is incredible. What these athletes are able to do it remarkable. And to save hundreds of lives in that rough environment is great. He has been well honored for his work. I find it interesting however, that they were upset about the "white man coming" and taking over the islands and yet the story is about them going to find where they came from. So they came at some point and took over the islands. Why is it OK for them to do it but not anyone else? Is exploration and settlement only for the first ones? And in this case we assume they they were the first. Perhaps they took it from someone else.

When the first voyagers settled in Hawai'i, the history goes that they were absolutely peaceful for the first few hundred of years until a priest from Tahiti showed them his God of War named Kū. It was then the Hawaiian decided to get violent. So just from looking at that, the first voyagers either found this place uninhabited because a such a peaceful people could never have been able to overtake an island of natives, or (highly unlikely) merged with the people who were already here before them.
Thank you so much for your respect of surfing and I hope I was able to shed some light on some history. If you have more questions, I'd be glad to try and answer them by messaging me on my account

Before you criticize us Native Hawaiians. Know that we were the first people to sail to Hawai'i. We sailed from Polynesia by navigating by the stars and the currents with no navigational instruments. We are proud people who love our history and love our ancestors. We are a deeply spiritual people. And many of us are still loyal to OUR Kingdom of Hawai'i. I am among those people. All we want is to have back what was stolen by the U.S and other foreign countries because they have mistreated these lands as well as its true native people for over 120 years. Know that it was and is the USA who is ignorant to all of us. We have a sad history with the western countries. It is not that you are white or anything like that. It is that your people have systematically disgraced, raped, stolen, and desecrated nearly everything we hold sacred. Even all of our cultural practices INCLUDING OUT OWN LANGUAGE was banned because it did not fit into the western ideology of the time. And one more thing just to top it all off. Remember that we, the Kānaka maoli (indigenous Hawaiians) are the sole creators of recreational surfing. The US even tried to take that from us

The Hawaiian Polynesians had made life on a newly created Polynesian island. The white men had came to take it over during that people lost their home, language, culture, religion. The Hawaiians took nothing from anyone.

Remember that it is not necessarily the person's color, it's the culture. I have friends that are white but love Hawai'i for what it truly is. And these days, the Japanese have become so corrupt and so powerful in government as well as most other ways of life here in Hawai'i that they are changing place names that are Hawaiian with Japanese names because they want to establish their self-proclaimed dominance over the rest of us. That isn't too hard to notice. It doesn't take a sociologist professor to figure that out. And yes, we never took lands from other people. But we did have our own wars for lands, just like every other people of this planet.
