So the difference between chilis back then and chilis now is right here in this demo. Last two albums are full of californication demos, pleasant enough sounding, nothing special. Old chilis found the genius magic, the genius riff/baseline/whatever that turned the demos into all time classics.
Well put, actually. When I listened to Unlimited Love, I mostly enjoyed it, but absolutely nothing stood out to me. The whole album felt like I was in a bar and there was just a band jamming in the backround. It was good music, they are all great musicians, but I also haven't revisited any song from that album since.

I don't get people saying the final version is simpler, John is just fucking around with chords in this one, playing some ska stuff and Flea just following along. The final song ended bring way more complicated in terms of interplay between bass and guitar, and way more structured... But somehow I guess I prefer hearing this one. There's a bit of Wet Sand and Make You Feel Better, like that happy chordy vibe, the final Californication has this almost robotic vibe to it and a melancholic weird sound
this demo really shows importance of producer during recording seasion. if not for the rick rubin, we would never had the californication version we love today.
@@ZackMahalati sure frusciante made final arrangment (btw he was inspired by the Cure riff in his final version) but it was rick rubin that pushed him to do it. othwerwise they might have just settled with this version and move on
This shows exactly why John is needed in RHCP. As great as Flea is on the bass he doesn't have the same ear for arrangements and neither did Josh Klinghoffer, and certainly not Anthony. I am absolutely certain that John was somehow involved in rearranging this song completely. Whenever John hasn't been in the band, Anthony has been allowed to get away with exactly this type of crap melodies. That's why most of the stuff with Josh is so dull. It's certainly not his playing. It's just that the band needs someone like John who can direct them musically. Josh has the skill to do that, but not the personality. And that's understandable, since he was always more of the "new guy".
they weren't satisfied with this version and by the end of recording process john was listening to carnage visitor by the cure which has chord progresion i-VI and from that he got the idea for the aragement that ended up being on the album.
@@theycallmejpj Yes, Rubin works really well with RHCP, but he doesn't have much to do with the arrangements of the songs. He's not that kind of producer, and he'd be the first to admit it. He has little knowledge about that. His approach is all about trying to help the band create a perfect creative environment and to highlight the sweet spots and that's perfect for RHCP when they have John, but Josh didn't like Rubin and other bands like Black Sabbath didn't really like him, because they wanted someone more involved with the music. Their mistake though. Should have done their homework before hiring him.
i disagree, the chilli peppers said in multiple ocations that all of them are involved in the creative process, even john talked about how flea created a lot of the songs in the by the way era like, for example, universally speaking despite of him being more interested in going in a different direction that john and anthony were going musicly at that time, plus, anthony said in multiple ocations that john wants him to find his own melody for the riffs that he brings to him, the only exception to that that im aware of is in the chorus of wet sand wich was idea of john, who also said in multiple ocations that he finds anthony very talented for melodies and lyrics, i just think youre making a lot of assumptions and underestimating the talent of the rest of the actual and previous band members like josh, who helped them to stay alive after john left the second time and helped to create im with you and the getaway, both amazing albums with great melodies and guitar parts like, dark neccesites, go robot, sick love, the longest wave, the adventures of rain dance maggie, look around, factory of faith, brendans death song, and the list goes on and on and on :p
