We quickly discovered the only problem with doing early reviews.... learning without Rodney!!! 😱 such great, clear instruction as always, thank you for creating a wonderful resource! 💕
I am currently on book three of the Red Rising Trilogy, and I am hungering for more from that universe - so here I am! Very excited to learn this one!! *grabs popcorn*
I subscribe to Jamie’s channel mainly for his tips on getting started developing board games, but his channel has a lot of great content and he comes off as so personable and friendly.
Rodney, you are such an excellent teacher and such a lovely human being! Thank you so much for such excellent content! I love that you had “the arrow in the quiver” with your shirt! Such a nice and elevated touch!
I kind of like the idea of a Stonemaier filler game. This might fill the spot of something in my collection like Century Golem, a great small game but one that I’ve played quite a bit.
Some games happen more in the card interactions/combos and effects than in the general rules that govern their play. Not saying there is enough game here for your particular tastes, but something I figured I'd mention.
2:04 I am always amazed by little things you pay attention to like how you make sure to draw exactly 5 cards... Thank you for another great video Rodney :)

Back again with the suitable replacement jokes. I don't know why those get me laughing so hard, but please keep them coming! Another great video, Rodney!
Jamey said it was heavily influenced by Fantasy Realms, and that's very evident. I also think it shares a bit with Capital Lux, by getting different rewards from the four columns.
Great video Rodney. As a BIG fan of the Red Rising series I have to admit, I was a bit worried that this game may be a disappointment. But it looks very enjoyable. I am definitely looking forward to getting my deluxe copy. Awesome job Jamey and Alex!
Such a beautiful and easy presentation as always Rodney!! You ALWAYS make games so inviting to learn 😭 also loving the new animations and b roll! So clean! 👌🏽
@@ddobrien1 I've been working on the script. Rodney sets such a high bar that I lose my nerve when I think about it. But yes, I'm going to muster through and put it together. I plan on having it available before pre-order so folks have have another bit of data to consider.
Rodney! Great video as always. I finished the second book in this series recently and found out the next day about theRed Rising game. I was super excited and even more excited to hear Jamey say there'd be a Watch It Played video coming out today. Keep up the great work :)
Some of the abilities on the bottom of the cards that score at the end remind me of the scoring abilities from hero realms...good stuff!...looks like an excellent game!
I purchased this game today and put it through its paces. A lot of the strategy comes from building up the final "reveal". You're trying to work up to a hand state where the cards' bonuses synergize with each other as much as possible. You can also do things like draining Luna of cards so that your opponent will have a difficult time taking the sovereign from you. Another thing we've found is that pushing to end game before your opponent is ready is ridiculously punishing in this game. You can place yourself in a position where it looks like you've still got three things to do to trigger end game, so your opponent is counting on three turns... Except you play a card that gives you two favor, then use your bonus to get the last helium you need, triggering end game while they're holding a dead hand... Or worse yet, their hand is full of penalties they were counting on resolving. Is it a deep game? No, admittedly it isn't. That's not to say it's a boring game... There's definitely more than enough here to keep board gamers of all experiences entertained and even playing with one another. Plus the price point makes it a very low risk buy.
Very cool looking game. I really like the art on the cards and the components, and it seems like one of those games that’s easy to teach but difficult to master.
Thank you for the fantastic how to play! I didn't want to be interested in this game but it looks really simple and fun. And the collectors version is just so pretty
I haven't read the books, but I've had that happen with other books I've enjoyed. It can be fun to see an artists vision of a world that only existed in your head.
Nope. There are many differences. Especially end game trigger conditions. There is a deploy ability of every single card as well. And finally, you can banish cards. Quite different from Fantasy Realms to be a version only, right?
The creators at Stonemaier have actually referenced that Fantasy Realms was their primary inspiration! Here's a link to their designer diary - stonemaiergames.com/games/red-rising/design-diary/
Amazing video as the game is very innovative n creative too very colourful n your shirt 👕 worn is perfect for explaining this game as it matches the theme 😁👍
I am really excited about this game, having read the five books in the series. I think it would be be a great game for us too. Easy to play with two players, and a good theme. I am a little surprised the balloons were not a suitable substitute for helium....hmmm. Great video. I love the mechanics with the cards, and interplay between the different houses. I am already on the notifications list, and am a member of the Stomemaeir Champions, so I will be able to get it as soon as possible, and I am thinking the collector’s edition components are probably worth it. Add another!
@@WatchItPlayed FINALLY got it on the table (a year later). Living in the trailer took a toll. We did not have to use any alternative resources for helium, but I am glad we got to play it. We had a good time and are going to play it again right now!!!
Probably an instant buy for me. But I do wonder about the scoring. I love it, but I think it will be a bit to dynamic for some players. Point salad + very dynamic scoring with the cards is quite a lot.
Thanks for the great video as always Rodney. Any chance you might start letting us know when the publisher expects the game to be available for the public to buy? I always get sad when I watch your videos, head over to either my LBGS or my online retailer and they say "I've never heard of that game". Thanks for all you do,
It's not something I'm in the habit of doing, and frankly could end up out of date (or not apply to all regions, etc). This part I've been leaving to the viewers to find out for their regions.
I've been thinking a great charity event raffle would be the chance to play Rodney in a virtual table top match. Be it zoom, tabletopia, table sim etc.
Hey Donald, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized review comments on the games I feature. What I like someone else might not - I prefer to show the game as it is, and hopefully that can help you decide whether or not it looks like something that might suit your tastes.
Rodney, thank your this video. I got this game a while back and am ready to star playing. This video was well done but I do have a question about the 4D painter card you were describing at around 8:12 on. You said that you would collect the bonus of the original deploy location. You played it at Jupiter, then moved it over to the yellow section. And then he said about picking it up and putting it in your hand if you want to., And then you collected the bonus from the yellow section. Wouldnt you have gotten it from Jupiter since that was your original deploy location? Just wondering, trying to get the details down. Thanks so much!
Hi Eric, I think I see the point of confusion. You gain the bonus from the location that you collect a card from. ruclips.net/video/NqfSYn0-_00/видео.html The importance of understanding that Jupiter is where I originally deployed to in the example of 8:12, is so that it's clear that the column I take "from", can't be Jupiter (as that was the original column I deployed it "to"). Let me know if that clears it up.
The scoring won't be as complex as it looks. You're just adding up a few categories and most of the cards end up with numbers ending in 5 or 0, so they're easy to add up.
Hey, thanks for the interest. I tend to avoid giving personalized recommendations. What I like, someone else might not. What might be suitable for one new board game, might be too complex for another, but hopefully the video can help you make an assessment based on the person you're thinking of.
Thanks Rodney - I wasn’t sure abt the game initially because I know nothing about the books but now I’m sold! I do have one question - say a card is worth 12 points and it also states 14 points if it’s with a blue card, is that an additional 14 points (so 26 pts in total)? Or just 14 pts in total?
The example in 9:35 of the block ability card: Rodney says after revealing it to perform the block effect it's returned to your hand. I'm assuming in the case of the card in the example that isn't true? Because it says after revealing it you must banish it for the effect to take place. So in order to block you would banish that blocking card. Is that correct?
I read Red Rising a while ago, but never finished the trilogy. Jamey Stegmaier may have just convinced me to do so... sooner rather than later. 😊 Great video, as always, Rodney.
I know I'm quite late to this but I'm just now getting to play this game so i have to ask how do you actually end up withore than 7 cards because it seems to me that you can get them exchanged basically meaning u give(deploy) one and take one in return
It's been long enough since I shot this, that I forget what some of the specific card effects are (but I'm guessing your answer lies in how certain combinations of effects create those situations).
For end game scoring, can you use an orange card’s ability more than once? For example, I use an orange card to be named as “Darrow” and then later on I use that same orange card to be named as “pax” is this possible?
I'll repeat the answer Jamey gave you over on his site where you posted it there :) "You give each orange card one name, and it is that name throughout end-game scoring."

Neat components, the rules seem simple and mostly intuitive (and you did a great job explaining them), but I’m not sure there’s a ton of game there.
Well, according to the dev diary, it's directly inspired by a 20 min filler called Fantasy Realms.
I kind of like the idea of a Stonemaier filler game. This might fill the spot of something in my collection like Century Golem, a great small game but one that I’ve played quite a bit.
@@kylesmorgabord5592 Well, despite the fact this was inspired by a 20 minute filler, Jamey was pretty clear about this not being a filler game.
James C, what do you mean? This looks like a pretty solid hand managment/set collection game. Not every game is going to be Terra Mystica.
Some games happen more in the card interactions/combos and effects than in the general rules that govern their play. Not saying there is enough game here for your particular tastes, but something I figured I'd mention.
