Angelll you got the shortcuts app, you press the plus sign on the top right, and press add action, and then scripting (the icon may look like an x) then you press open app, and press choose and pick any app you want. After that, you press Next (it’s on the top right) and you type the name of the app then press done. Then it’s gonna go back to where we started with the app/shortcut, press the 3 dots on the app/shortcut you named then press the 3 dots again, then press add to Home Screen, press the button below the preview and it’s going to ask to edit the icon and you can choose photo and put any photo you what for it. Then press add tap done (2 times) Now you have the app with the picture you want! Now edit all apps and press the minus button on the default/pervious app that you used and move to library.

Update
1: Open shortcuts
2: Tap plus icon top right corner
3: Tap open app below then tap the greyed out “app” button next to open
4: Tap blue icon top right
5: Tap add to Home Screen
You should be able to change the photo and name. Tap add when done and boom.

I have a Samsung and love it but it's cool seeing ppl ideas with iOS 14 widgets not going to hate
So true! The creativity is great, but not having it on iPhone this long to begin with has been sad 😅
I have an iPhone and I like it but customization is still VERY limited even with this update.
Please help if you can. I downloaded widget smith, and yes I have the 14 IOS, every time I try to open the app it immediately takes me back to my home screen. (In other words it basically doesn’t let me open the app). Please tell me what to do if you can.
Kanixia reinstall the app, and if it still doesn’t work restart the phone, as in power off and on.
Now with this update people showing off iOS customization thinking they are cool, as a Note 20 KLWGT user, I fell like a god watching, little ants
Tipp:If you delete the shortcut app (after you’re done) it will lead directly to the actual app without the extra step

I hope this helps a little.. If you go to accessibility and click on reduced motion, it skips the shortcut app a little faster.

This was very helpful thank you. Just hope there will be an update in the future where you can freely replace the app icons without having to make a shortcut so you can see notifications and what not.

I was so excited until I found out people are using the shortcut app. The extra lag for each app isn’t really worth it to me but hopefully Apple will finally let us customize more! Strangely I didn’t really want customization until it came out. Now it feels nice to have a minimalist home screen!!!
Updates make it that apps are opened immediately and doesn’t take you to shortcuts now which I lovvveee!!

The best thing they could add is if they allow you to do this without shortcuts, the ability to reorganise App Library and rename folders and to remove the word ‘Widgetsmith from beneath each Widget’

Hopefully next update they let you customize icons without using shortcuts or they make it so apps opened using shortcuts opens the app directly instead of opening shortcuts first and then the designated app.

Is there a way to have notifications show on these shortcuts? For instance when I receive a text it doesn’t show a “1” on the new icon.
You can’t show notifications with the new icon the only way you can see it is if you go to the App Library

After you create the custom icon do you have to keep the photo in the photo library in order for the custom icon to stay? Or can it be deleted?
you can delete the icons after you make them
u can delete them, but I suggest to just move them in an album just in case if you accidentally delete your shortcut and u want it back with the same picture.
