  • In this video, Dr Peter Coleman, who is Board-certified in Addiction Medicine and in long-term recovery himself, answers a viewer question about whether there's any reason to get off Suboxone (buprenorphine) or Methadone, 2 of the forms of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Use Disorder. Naltrexone is the third evidence-based form of MAT.
    -Safe, Comfortable Outpatient Detox
The Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine has been a leading outpatient addiction treatment center since 1998. Our innovative withdrawal management programs, often referred to as The Coleman Method, have helped thousands of people free themselves from addiction to Alcohol, Opioids, and Benzodiazepines. Originally founded in Richmond, Virginia, our network has expanded to cover 10 cities across the US.
    -3 - 8 Day Opioid Detoxification Process
For short-acting opiates like oxycodone, most patients complete their detox and begin Naltrexone therapy within 5 days. Longer-acting opiates like Suboxone and Methadone typically take 8 days. Our standard opioid treatment package in Richmond, VA includes the detox and 6 months of case management and Naltrexone therapy. As a non-addictive opioid blocker, Naltrexone dramatically reduces cravings so that patients can focus on their recovery. We have a 98% success rate for completing detoxification and starting Naltrexone therapy. During the detox, we work with patients and their families to develop an appropriate aftercare plan. We also offer a convenient, 3-day outpatient alcohol detox and a Benzodiazepine Detox.
    -Caring, Empathetic Environment
Our founder, Dr. Peter Coleman, understands first-hand the challenges our patients are facing due to his own personal struggle with the disease of addiction. He has been in long term recovery since 1984. Dr. Coleman has dedicated his career to treating addiction patients and creating a team and an environment conducive to long term recovery for his patients.

A reason to get off Suboxone is to not trade one addiction for another.

i will syay on buprenorphine for life. i have no other agenda but to live free of the craving and shame. it works if you want it to because the high is gone. but so is that crippling craving.

Ive been on and off MAT for about 8-9 years. I relapsed once during that period and that was when i was pressured to get off of them early by the closest around me due to the stigma of being on the meds themselves. Even now the few people that know im on MAT assisted treatment now ask when um going to get off of it. I wish more people understood the benefit of MAT and didnt see them as harmful drugs.

Alot of 12 step meetings of NA say members on any mind altering substances cannot share but listen and share with someone after meeting. I don’t feel this is right. It stigmatizes people on MAT and other example would be people on phy mds.

@jwelch1027 yes me too.. I was on methadone for 6 years and I'm at day 33 without it.. my highest was 135mls but tapered down to 30mls and just stopped from there. Probably should have tapered down to 1ml but it's too late to turn around now lol... I had 3 straight weeks of physical withdrawals which were intense, then that started easing off a bit now I'm dealing with post acute withdrawals.. having alot of anxiety and depression but im pushing through. Hope your doing alright... how far along are you?

@@jwelch1027 yes it's the most brutal shit. I still don't feel right it my body even 33 days later.. its the first time I ever tried to come off methadone and was not realizing how horrible it would be...made it through the physical withdrawals without craving but since I got past those I've been wanting to use.. I think it's because of the anxiety and depression I'm dealing with now but not going to cave....Hoping you get through it this time cause I know how hard it is ❤️

a reason to get off methadone is my freaking COLON, my large intestine has literally quit working and dr's don't want to help me figure it out. I'm in pain everyday.

Obviously it is a different story for others. Everyone has their reasons or what not. If people want to get offf then more power to them…they would like to stay on then move power to them. Pretty simple. Do not judge because you never know what someone could be dealing with! My detox has been 4 years then another 2 for paws. I’m just glad I didn’t hesitate when I felt the calling. If I can do it, anyone that wants to CAN GET FREE. AGAIN…difference strokes, different folks. 💪 to anyone this resonates with please, drop me a message about your experience about this crap! Positive vibes, love your prayers your way my friend. 💪💪💪💪💪💪✌️✌️✌️❤️

I have a list of reasons to get off mat but I would rather run long distance for my mat than take an opioid. I could not run 20 miles the 3.5 years I was on mat and once I was 100 days off mat I ran a marathon again and plan to run ultras again.

Well what about women who want to get pregnant? And not have their babies addicted to Suboxone? Men might have a easier time but there are many Suboxone babies who suffer tremendously.

Ditto! That shit is poisonous!! After being on it for just 4 months made my skin gross, and I gained a whopping 45lbs in those four months!! Plus the two clinics near me were full of dealers making it very hard to stay clean. I was still using off and on when I wasn’t methadone. I switched to suboxone and for me personally, saved my life! Methadone was my personal demon!👿

Methadone is for people who want to keep using but don't want to be sick. Or for people that are ready to stop using opiates all together including Methadone. Methadone then, should only be prescribed at a tapering dosage regime once the patient is comfortable. This whole system is designed to maximize profit $$$$ for them. The current system needs to let only people with practical experience to be allowed to work in this field. 😐...... I'm going back to school 🤠 ..... so many people need help and I have the perfect plan. It won't be for greed either.

Dear Doctor, I would truly appreciate some help please? I am 45 and 13 years clean from Heroin ( i was born addicted as a result of my mother using during her pregnancy) I have used the lowest dosage of Suboxone for 13 years but now its out of stock country wide. How do i safly get through this? I am very afraid! I don't have a support system and i work full time at a very demanding job. Suboxone gave me a life i never thought possible but now it may no longer be available. I am in South Africa and our health system is nonexistent!! What advice can you give please?
