This is the only Toccatina where I can actually follow the pulse all the way through! Kapustin's recording had parts where I lost the beat and couldn't convince my ears that the measure lines were where they were.
Kapustin often writes like that on purpose. The drums give a different feel to it, allowing you to know where the measure lines are all the time, but Kapustin often makes measure lines unclear.
Sickening............and this guy plays piano for fun. He is a professor of maths and computer science at a Hamburg university..... Great stuff. I subscribed after watching your 251 tutorial. Get some more jazz stuff on here! Greetings from Hannover.
Awesome!! Nice to hear someone with jazz instincts interpret Kapustin. Being crossover classical/jazz, for some reason seems to be inticing mainly the classical oriented so far. Nice to hear it pulled to the jazz side.
Hello everybody. I have just uploaded the drum and bass track only, so you can play along and practice. Look here ruclips.net/video/b92EXFbCzOU/видео.html Have fun!
Just amazing! Without drums it's already freaking good but with this it just makes even more sense and shows the meaning of certain rithms in the music it self! NICE NICE NICE!!!
This is the best Toccatina ever! It's one of those compositions where everybody decides they're going to be the World's Speediest Speed Freak. "Watch how fast I can sound these notes" is not a legitimate style of interpretation. And everybody does that. I don't care to listen to that. I want to hear the music. In this performance, I can hear the music. I would listen to this video over and over, even without the clever drums and bass added.
This is the only version I feel comfortable listening to the section after 1:20 into the peice. I think there is so much syncopation in this part I lose track of the beat when listening to other performances. Thanks for the upload.
Apart from the fact you made a great arrangement, I also want to notice your great techinique and a perfect feel of Kapustin's jazz-classics mixture. Keep it up, good sir, it is a rare occasion to see a musician that is not only technically good, but is also creative and actually thinks about what he is playing :)
This is awesome! The added bass and drums really helps give the piece some musical context to one that might just be starting to learn this piece or any other of Kapustin's pieces, which can often be difficult to interpret through those thick passages! It helps the learner to "see the wood through the trees" so to speak, so we can better grasp the mood and paint a better music picture with the notes. Thank you this!
Thank you, I grew up listening to my fathers jazz records, so its a second language, so when I first heard this piece played by Yuja Wang it immediately sounded like a jazz piece, and hearing this it definitely is. Great posts
This is the best Toccatina. I agree with Frederick Gestwicki. "Everybody decides they're going to be the World's Speediest Speed Freak. "Watch how fast I can sound these notes" is not a legitimate style of interpretation. " So right!
I loved this performance when I first heard it about a year ago, but now that I am working on this piece myself I appreciate it even more. There is so much to enjoy in this performance....Perfect Tempo, Great Dynamics and Expressiveness. I love the bass and drum parts you wrote and even the camera shots are very exciting and add to the whole experience. Great job Stephan!.... and as far as Nikolai Kapustin being around to enjoy this, last I heard he is still very much alive!
Super Hot !!! This is the first version I've heard of Kapustin's Toccatina op. 40 no. 3 with a rhythm section accompaniment and it really rocks. The music is perfectly written and played to compliment the rhythm and vice versa. Great playing on a great composition. 'Loved it !!!!
I love this! I've heard it played so many times in a rushed way where the basic pulse is obscured, and this felt so solid and rhythmic...so fun! Probably my new favorite of this Toccatina :)
This is the coolest video I've ever seen. Amazing work! Best rendition of a classic. God knows how you put those drums together to make sense but you did, and I would know, I'm a drummer who's always wanted to hear this behind a beat lol.
I never thought I'd say that Shan-shan Sun's rendition of this Kapustin could be topped, but you seem to have equalled/done it! (High praise, high praise!)
It is true as someone wrote that the piece doesn't need drums and/or bass, but I loved it anyway really great job! And if you had fun...(and we did with you), that's enough!
Very cool...Mr. K. is harder to play than it looks...and it LOOKS hard! Very precise, high level playing too...right in the groove. I hope Nikolai hears this!
After 10 years you did it, i discovered this. Amazing version!!
Groovy! The drum and bass allow for a slower tempo which really makes the jazziness stand out here.

It’s a hemiola. That tempo thing is on purpose

You're welcome! Amazing stuff.
Be good to see some more jazz tutorials for the lazy boys like me ;-))
He's a genius
why are the math professors always the ones good at music

This is brilliant! Thank you for sharing. Putting it on repeat for a while.

Eh to be fair, this piece sounds really cool fast
This is exactly my words. Point blank!
the op 36 is also cute
this is how fast it's supposed to be played, as per kapustin's own recording
You are so right! I'm not impressed with "fast, fast, fast can you do it as fast as me?"
This is the only version I feel comfortable listening to the section after 1:20 into the peice. I think there is so much syncopation in this part I lose track of the beat when listening to other performances. Thanks for the upload.
Exactly my thought!
Agreed, 100%

still listening this. My alltime favorite

What a great idea and execution. You have perfectly brought out the essential jazziness of this composition. Hats off!
Kapustin would have been proud! This is awesome!
Mezmerizing! I love this performance!
still the best version of this i have ever heard
i seriously wish i could faorite this 10 million times.
This is a legendary performance, i bet after more than 10 years of posting this, you have already mastered this piece!
This masterpiece is kind of a short movie. Great directing and performance!
Thank you,

Great posts
Gosh... if only Kapustin were around to see this. He would've thoroughly enjoyed it :) Amazing work!
you know he's still alive right?
Whoa whoops! I could've sworn I heard that he died in the earlier part of the millenia :P
TheExarion Ok. I think this version is worth for being seen by Mr. Kapustin. I definitly have to send it to him.
P P Did you really send it to him? If so, how did he reply?

Wow, this packs a great punch. This Kapustin is very exciting as is the player.
Love it!
It's slower but it loses nothing in terms of energy and groove.

This reminds me of emerson lake and Palmers somehow, you are a really good player
What a vibe!!! Love it 👏👏👏👏
Gorgeous!!! I'm learning this soon!
Really brilliant! I wonder if Kapustin himself has seen this! Considering his background, I think he would love it! Bravissimo!
Cool, brings out another dimension of this great piece!
Adorei a sua interpretação cheia de bossa da linda música do mestre Kapustin.
Great music, balanced mixture of piano & drums bass, plus great camera work.
I like the tempo! It grooves! Plus, it gives the listener a chance to enjoy the musical percussion of the piano. Great work!
I love this! I've heard it played so many times in a rushed way where the basic pulse is obscured, and this felt so solid and rhythmic...so fun! Probably my new favorite of this Toccatina :)
Оригинальная версия ! Отличное, яркое, энергичное исполнение!
THIS IS BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!
Breathtaking
Stunning performance!

this is breathtaking!
amazing!
I could listen to you, to this, All day
wow, fantastic arrangement and playing! this is a real highlight. Drums seem to be an excellent addition to a lot of Kapustin pieces. Bravo!

Can I get the drum track!? I learnt this piece for a performance couple years ago, would love to play along!
Need to be of very high level of playing.
@@lewismartiniello9441 Actually it is a very managable piece. You can learn it rather quickly once you get the rhythm and the akward jumps!!
Fabulous, excellent drum track
Wow!
No more words to be said.

fascinating! I believe Kaputsin would be pleased.

Outstanding!!! Parts of it remind me of Dave Grusin. Excellent technique sir!!!!
Awesome! very nice idea
BEAUTIFUL!!!
Incredible playing! It reminds me of the rendition by mouse on the keys!
Great stuff, works really well at a clear tempo with the drums, well done!
the tempo, for me, is perfect !
Wow, what a brilliant idea, and well played!

This is impressive. The arrangement is so good. XD
