From the beginning of her life to her current success as a creative musician, Esperanza Spalding has charted her own course. The young bassist/vocalist/composer was one of the biggest breakout stars of 2011-not just in jazz, but in all genres of music. Her receipt of the 2011 GRAMMY® for Best New Artist was unprecedented-the first time a jazz musician had won the award- but Spalding continues to make the unprecedented the norm.
Born in Portland, Oregon, Spalding grew up in a single-parent home and learned early lessons in the meaning of perseverance and moral character from the role model whom she holds in the highest regard to this day -- her mother.
But even with a rock-solid role model, school did not come easy to Spalding, although not for any lack of intellectual acumen. She was both blessed and cursed with a highly intuitive learning style that often put her at odds with the traditional education system. On top of that, she was shut in by a lengthy illness as a child, and as a result, was home-schooled for a significant portion of her elementary school years.
However, the one pursuit that made sense to Spalding from a very early age was music. At age four, after watching classical cellist Yo Yo Ma perform on an episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, the roadmap was suddenly very clear. "That was when I realized that I wanted to do something musical," she says. "It was definitely the thing that hipped me to the whole idea of music as a creative pursuit." Видеоклипы
Going into 2024, still playing this on repeat , and sharing with brothers and sisters
I was at this video shoot and I tell you it was a perfect day in NYC, she was gracious and social to all of us extras, the music was banging (yes they had an impromptu jam session after the filming), we got tee shirts and were fed.
One of the top 5 best days in the last 5 years for me...
I was there too!
we were fed. GOOD. ahaaa CRUCIAL detail right there ;) love it
Peggy G: Was the recording of the song done in one take?
@@dianewentz9400 No, they did several angles and takes. But they would play the song in full, take a break, change angles and do it again. We did sing along and clap so they got that audio.
In the interim between breaks we would hang out. Most extras just hung out but her die hard fans were up in the front chatting her and Algebra up. I've met her once before and I can say she is an awesome person.
You can't see any of us in this video. I guess we weren't cute enough.Doesn't matter, it's stll hands down one of the best NYC days I've ever had and I'm over 50.
@aidan pee Yes, yes it was!
This is in recognition of good men and good fathers everywhere
judith Cohen That's father is Esperanza's old friend, a good father himself. Sadly, Esperanza's father left her when she is very young.
I sing this to my 3 babies (actually 1 grown, 1 tween and my little 3 yr old) Cause they are so precious, black gold!!
black gold
Black bassist here. I do appreciate this song a lot.
Brings tears to my eyes! Our young kings need to hear this!
STILL RELEVANT
This song suddenly came to mind in the present situation. R.I.P George. BLM
Me too. I love this song
you can't be saying George Floyd is black gold are you ????????? This song should be dedicated to black people who work hard and become good ambassadors to their community not a criminal.
Teach your kids !!! Do not leave their education up to the classroom !!!
This echoes so loud in my soul...
Oh yes !
Betsy Cicilese: Indeed! Particularly now, when, schools attempt to be more honest about the past, and certain parents incorrectly claim that their kids are being taught "Criticle Race Theory," because said parents are completely clueless about what "Critical Race Theory" really is (a class taught in law school and some graduate schools). When you really don't know what you're talking about, to make idiotic claims only underscores how stupid you are.
Facts💪🏿
Every time I watch this video, tears fill my eyes with so much pride. I play it for my son all the time. These ladies are so regal, and a reminder that we hail from the original Kings & Queens. 👑👑
We ARE Gods. (Psalms 82:6, John 10:32-36) If you could imagine what a goddesses' voice sounds like, wouldn't it sound something like her's? And doesn't her voice sound very much like the timeless voices we all love? It is time to put away the rhetoric that speaks to "remembering" who we were. That is the distraction. That is the trap! Nobody has to remember how to drive a car, how to type, or how to dial a phone...we just do. Live in the cool confidence of knowing...assuming you create your heaven. Peace
Where’s your sons dad?
It makes me cry too X
They are beyond regal. As Maze stated, they are divine.
Me too and I'm white
I wish both Esperanza and Algebra would get more music credit. Two beautiful voices in one great empowering song.
YAAAAAAAAS!!!!
We need more father like him in the Black community. If we did, we would makena come up and trunaround. Shout out to the ones holding it down and serving as a great role model not only to their own children but to others as well.
Algebra AND Esperanza....I'm in musical heaven!!!!
I'm Asian, for me this music and this video have a powerful meaning for everybody who listen it and can feel a real meaning of this song. I really love this song! It gives me smile and spirit :)
This song brought tears in my eyes. Am in Africa, South Africa to be specific and its amazing to know that we are also celebrated. Esperanza Spalding you just made my day. Please do come to SA and perfrom.
Finally. REAL INTELLIGENT GOOD music. I felt so inspired to do something great upon hearing this
The beginning was powerful
Now this is REAL music..........thank you Ms. Spalding & Ms. Blesset for this gem. Thank you, thank you, thank you......
There are folks hell bent on tearing you down... But your Golden Baby... Black Gold with a Diamond Soul.. Thanks ESPERANZA
I have been telling my son that he is Black Gold for 8 years now. I needed him to know the words to this song are exactly what he is Black Gold with a Diamond Soul. He is still young but old enough to see how the world works within different communities. I speak life over my son and the other boys out there. You ARE Black Gold.
I almost cried watching this :'D
I play this song for my students every morning when they come in off the bus at breakfast time. Now I'm teaching virtual elementary music classes, and I'm going to leave them with this as their listening assignment. We have to get this message to sink in. Thank you, Ms. Spalding, for making such a powerful and beautiful song.
Well done Sis!! This is beautiful
I Hope you are not in Florida because you would be considered a "subversive".
Esperanza is a gift to humanity.
Wow,let's take a deep breath and grab a hold of ourselves! This song and these images are a gift and a balm for us all.Try and bring your/our little child self up to the surface and be the Black Gold right here and now.Blessings on you Esperanza, I hear you...
I get a lump in my throat every time I watch this.
The end really had me tearing up too.
I believe that nothing is by accident, so it was no accident that i found this. Right when my inner man is waking up to God's Truth, I find this beautiful sister expressing God's truth. Esperanza Spalding may God continue to bless the wings of truth on which you fly. Peace
I LOVE this SONG!!!! I sing this to my boys before they go to bed and before they get out of the car for school. I want to HUG Esperanza until she hollers cause this is right up there with "Young Gifted & Black!". Love Love Love this song!!!
Haters, keep hating, we gon' LOVE you ANYWAY!!
One of the top ten songs we should be blasting from our speakers this summer.
I love this intro, a black man with his sons.....so beautiful.
I love Esperanza's fulani earrings in this video! Love the song and intro too.
You know, as I listen to these two beautiful black young ladies, I begin to think about Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and woman who try to get up and make a difference in the music, we as people have to come together and realized through it all we have survived, we are more than what they try to made of us, we will come together, and what was last, will be first, we will continue to rise up and continue to be black gold!!!
I love this chick. She is awesome on the bass guitar !
In this video Spalding demonstrates everything that black parents are thinking and wanting to tell their kids about African-American heritage, achievements, etc. I remember when my mother had that very same conversation with me.
This is my new anthem.
Yea I agree, my parents always trying to have this conversation with me in the early 90's. I went to a predominately white private school so my parents where always trying to reenforce black beauty, black this and black that.
Ammar Napata i go to one too, i know exactly what u mean
This is real pro black, afrocentric music
This song is one of the best i've heard in a while, love how it profiles the African continent and its proud lineage and history that is barely discussed
Happy Birthday Esperanza Spalding (born October 18, 1984)...multi-instrumentalist best known as a jazz bassist and singer, who draws upon many genres in her own compositions. In 2011, she won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist at the 53rd Grammy Awards, making her the first jazz artist to win the award.
This is a healing song! The genius of Ms. Spalding.
Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Lil’ Kim, Rihanna and the like, take notice. This young woman is pure class, producing the highest quality music with little to no regard for commercial success; doing it with grace, elegance, and beauty, positively repressing our people.
And with keeping her clothes on!
thats such a nice thing to say , not many people understand that being proud of who you are doesnt mean u hate everyone else.
Just pure magic. Just brings a smile to your face listening to this song and watching the video that is perfect for the song. Good sound, good message.
Whenever I listened to this song, I thank god for being an African
Thaanks Esperanza for making me feel that
Awww! This just warms my heart. I wish we learned more about African history in school!!!
Thinking o' this song today as it's Black History Month. Cheers Esperanza Spalding fir this beautiful song.
We Are Beautiful🖤 💛Black🖤 Gold💛
I'm from Ghana, Africa; It's a beautiful song. I'M A MUSICIAN TOO. WOW !!!
So beautiful. I want to play this song to my children one day. We are Black Gold, let no one tell you otherwise
This video made me wanna cry.... It was beautiful. I loved it so much, beautiful, very beautiful.
This tune does something for my soul; musical nourishment.
Mearon Michael it heals it
I just heard her sing on the new Prairie Home Companion show, driving home. If I were able to stand and shout bravo I would have. I did shout out, so incredibly moving what i heard her sing and now i'm listening to all her songs, purchase next. Amazing!!!
This song actually brought a tear to my eye...WOW
Aaaaaaaaaaamen!!! The song is just THAT BEAUTIFUL too.
This song is very relevant for 2020 this an anthem
Considering the war that the GOP is waging in education, it's indeed a very relevant song. If they are fighting against even teaching shaming points of white America, let alone any African history.
Tears of Joy Power and Positivity. AWESOME.Great vidi...Hold ya Head.
Such a breath of fresh air.
Feeling 😕 and this song came into my mind & reminded me who I am.....
I wish the world could really understand the depth and the truth about this..Black Gold...it is far more valuable then we actually think...It moved humanity forwards, still moves...still impregnates the world with a mix of resilience, intelligence, power, beauty, fertility, creativity, generosity, biologic integrity ...If the Gods do exist..they are probably black :)..Black Gold..needs very little to flourish beautifully
I am in Love with the most beautiful black woman
that ever existed. I truly never knew what happiness was until her!
I’m most definitely gonna play this song for my kids! I adore this!🌹🌹🌹🌹
She is so beautiful, I love her, such an articulate bass player and amazing vocalist.. World is a better place because of Esperanza.
I am black gold. I don't live in the ghetto OR the just the hood. But a neighborhood. were we as AFRICANS love and support EACHOTHER!!!!!!!
Thank you so much Esperenza, just like your beautiful name, you and your music give me hope!
Omg why is she so beautiful though, for real.
Let's see:
best jazz players - black
best basketball players - black
best marathon runners - black
Jimi Hendrix - black
inventors of funk - black
;-)
How about no? You can't even rate 'best' jazz players. I don't care about sport, the goals are clear there.
of course you can. Karl Malone. best Jazz player. lol
That one, I believe, was completely lost on some, but I was rather partial to John Stockton as well. Those two playing off of each other on the court was pure ebony and ivory gold. :-)
@@BenjiSun 😂💯!!!
@@TheDarkestSmurf yes the combination was a one, two punch🏀✔
Beautiful
Brought me to tears. Beautiful song.
BEAUTIFUL BLACK GOLD

Thanks Miss Spalding.
This is honestly my first time ever hearing an Esperanza Spalding song, and all I can say is that this is amazing. Her and the rest of the band are very talented!
Who is still watching in 2020? Love this song! 😍
Whenever I'm having a rough morning, this is my go-to song along with some meditation and scripture. It works every time :)
This song brings tears to my eyes. My children love it and it makes me proud they sing this around the house instead of Nicki Minaj!
as a mixed race aspiring bass player, i gotta say esperanza is a real inspiration for me. love this video!!

Love this comment, don't ever be ashamed of who you are and don't be afraid of loving others who are not like you. Racial diversity is beautiful..Isn't she though? Just radiant.
Beautiful, music. Beautiful statement.
Black Gold...stay encouraged. Keep smiling and living well.

This message of this song needs to be spread out every year!!!!
Agree. I played this for my kids most of their lives..sometimes they just bust out singing it randomly
@@nakuro2686 it’s a good message and to uplift your kids to remind them how beautiful they are God’s precious gift from above ☝🏾 🤲🏾 🙏🏾
I love this song and this album. Black, white, red, yellow, whatever. You're all gold.
Healing music. Good for my soul.
years later this song still makes me smile....Thanks Esperanza
This song and video brought me to tears because the man in the video WAS my father, after my mother passed he did exactly what you see in this video. AMAZING and power song please keep pushing through
Love this song, just because! 👍🏾
This made me cry of joy
Can't get enough of this ❤️
I just discovered this song and vid on a website after searching the internet for positive websites that uplift black women. I wasn't expecting it but I ended up in tears. Wonderful song and message for young black men and women and all black people.
The people in this video are so diverse in origin and together, they create such an unimaginably beautiful audience. It honestly presents the beauty of diversity in a country which struggles to be pluralistic.
I love this so much... - My eyes are just welled-up with tears... because of the racist state of this world STILL in 2019... - When I see the beauty of what HERITAGE means for people of color (& particularly African-based heritage), my mind continues to be blown as to the length, depth & breadth of the African heritage, culture & community. - One Love To All... 💞
this is my motivational song when I need to get through the day. Imagine it's 2017 and this stats fresh.
That's a real woman right there. No hair weave, confident, beautiful.
i think that all of the musicians would love to hear that :) i want to do the same, make someones day with music
This song rocks...And I love the footage of the family.
I wake up to this
just amazing…. I'm addicted to this video, and the message that it send.
