I can see how you think that but she's definitely not selling out. If you look into her project more, you will learn that the mission statement behind this album was not to get her onto the radio necessarily, but to bring jazz more into the forefront of today's mainstream music. If you haven't already, you should check out the DVD that went along with the bonus edition of the cd, it contains 10+ music videos and some really awesome behind the scenes features that are worth seeing.
I love this woman. She's a female version of Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Rick James, Billy Preston, Lenny Kravitz, Larry Graham, Stanley Clarke (as well as so many others whose names are too long to name). Versatility in every sense of the word defines her. Can't wait to see her in concert one of these days.
BTW, they played this @ Starbucks just now. I plan to get this bad boy next pay period!
So this was written nine years ago. I hope you have learned by now that listing male performers to praise her really don’t make sense in many ways. Are you saying male performers are better but she is included as an equal? Listing so many of them to suggest she is unique? Why does she have to be a female version of anyone?

By the way, Jazz music should have more love than Pop music.
Personally, MOST of Pop songs are only about, you know, inappropriate things for children and MOST kids today are really messed up because they watched/listened Pop music videos. Jazz songs are more about life, deep thinking and stuff like this. Plus, Jazz musics are more complex than Pop musics, which can, probably, make people way more smarter than those that don't even know what Jazz really is and that listen to Pop only.
(Anyway, that's what I'm thinking and what I noticed around me.)
P-S : My English may be very bad, sorry.
Edit: It's been 5 years and I still listen to Esperanza's music and jazz music in general and it's fantastic. Though, I just want to precise that people can like/listen to whatever music they enjoy and we shouldn't restrain ourselves to listen at only a few specific genres. Discovering and varying our tastes is good.

Sure, Esperanza Spalding is talented, but I agree with the critical consensus that the arrangements on "Radio Music Society" leave it unfocused and missing the mark somehow.
If you love radio pop music that is true. As a very competent woodwind player of pop, R&B, classical, mostly jazz et al for decades I find this music beautiful creative crossover music from a genius. It hits the mark perfectly. Some of the hard core music I play would make your ears bleed. She could play it as well but is trying to bring quality musicianship to more ears. I love and respect it.
Saw her at Yoshi's Oakland in 2008, after stumbling on either on npr or RUclips in a search bass musicians. Whatta find! Solid Gold!
