I get that lump in my throat, shortness of breath. Eyes well with joyous tears. I love what she does to me. No one else ever did this in my 38 years of loving music.
This track is therapy after a long day at the job...loop it a few times on the way home from work and you're guaranteed to feel better. Only genius can get this accomplished while singing about it!
I love Esperanza Spaldings music so so much!! I own almost all of her cd albums. Sadly not many people know of her outside of the jazz musician community. I tell everybody about her music!
Just discovered her and I'm blown away! Heard this cut on a college radio station (since it's too good for regular radio). Wow, the funky bass line, the complex melody, the beautiful vocals... sign me up! Can't wait to hear the whole record and see her live!
I love this woman. She's a female version of Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Rick James, Billy Preston, Lenny Kravitz, Larry Graham, Stanley Clarke (as well as so many others whose names are too long to name). Versatility in every sense of the word defines her. Can't wait to see her in concert one of these days. BTW, they played this @ Starbucks just now. I plan to get this bad boy next pay period!
So this was written nine years ago. I hope you have learned by now that listing male performers to praise her really don’t make sense in many ways. Are you saying male performers are better but she is included as an equal? Listing so many of them to suggest she is unique? Why does she have to be a female version of anyone? You must not be alive being so badly handicapped. Rip.
I remember when she won the best new artist Grammy over the biebster with his outrageously silly baby, baby, baby song and all of the little girls were outraged that he lost to Esperanza!!😆😆😆
@@akemygoto4425 that wasn’t my intent. All I was saying was she’s right up there with the greats before her. She even surpassed some of them. It was just a compliment, no more no less. And you’re right, she IS her own version (gonna edit that in my comment, thank you).
This song is great on many levels. The lyrics are great but listen for the point and counterpoint between the voice, rhythm section, horns, and of course the bass. The blending of styles is remarkable and worth listening to many times to appreciated what she has pulled together.
I can see how you think that but she's definitely not selling out. If you look into her project more, you will learn that the mission statement behind this album was not to get her onto the radio necessarily, but to bring jazz more into the forefront of today's mainstream music. If you haven't already, you should check out the DVD that went along with the bonus edition of the cd, it contains 10+ music videos and some really awesome behind the scenes features that are worth seeing.
I must say that the video is fun to watch, too. I should keep this CD in my car and play it the next time I'm in a traffic jam. Maybe people will get out of their cars and start dancing.
Fantasticoooooooooooo!!!!!!! Eperanza è FAntasticooooooooooo !! Bravissimi tutti , video e brano meravigliosi! ti ho visto a Lucca nel 2016 non lo scorderò mai
Esperanza ! I woke up at 5.30 am because I wanted so much to hear this song, The Song ! What a groove ! I love love love love it ! Thank you so much Esperanza !
i 'met' Esperanza just a few day's ago at youtube, but i already bought her cd's. Swinging, musical, grooving (my style, ooh yeah) sound great and is just nice to listen too.
I went to see her in concert last night and I tell you she sounds even BETTER in person! My goodness! Esperanza and the Radio Music Society are absolutely AMAZING!
I'm a retired drummer who loves mathematics as much as he loves music, because they are really both one, and the same thing. My love for math led me to discover your music. Now I am in love with you. You go girl!
Heard the song like 1000 times and still I want to dance. What a girl! :D Moving like Michael Jackson, a voice that makes me think she is Charlie Parkers' sax and playing bass like Mingus, Chambers and Pastorius. And it all works together. Damn!
I never saw the video before. What fun! It's every commuter's fantasy. The story is exactly how I got turned on to ES.I started bopping down the freeway and when I got off, I pulled over and started searching for a pen...
it like she read my mind! after work, i was tired of the radio so i downloaded this album and listened to it in my car. sadly it was rush hour, but this song came up and i was happy just groovin' and singing it wrong. haha
@JayBlanche lol I wasn't surprised. I actually grew up in the UK and lived in France, but now live in America; That was why I immediately recognized the vehicles were not American. I knew the plates were neither French nor English, that was why I asked. But someone here says the video was shot in spain. btw who doesn't like efficient cars?
Mathews Barbosa Or, y'know, personal taste. Just because something is popular (or unpopular, for that matter) doesn't automatically make it good or bad. Putting down one musician to big up another is just silly and unnecessary.
I met Esperanza last night...she is absolutley as wonderful as her music!!
Playing bass so skilled and singing so effortless is crazy difficult. She's truly brilliant and groovy hair to bootsy
The way the sound changes at 2:15 get me teary eyed. It's just such a beautiful sound.
❣
truth
I hear Erykah Badu, Basia and Steely Dan in this one track alone. Brilliant. The world of jazz was waiting for Esperanza.
I get that lump in my throat, shortness of breath. Eyes well with joyous tears. I love what she does to me. No one else ever did this in my 38 years of loving music.

This lady is pure class.
This song is brilliant on so many levels... technically & emotionally.
What an amazing artist & what an amazing band/team!
She is #class 👌🏾
She has the flava of a back in the day NYC Village jazz club singer. Wow!
This needs so much more publicity... this is the best song I've heard in a very long time
This Song needs a LOVE button!! Warm & Fuzzy good feeling listening to this!
Thumbs up if this songs the one..

This Girls is off the chain, I mean..... Such a great Intellect in sound!!!!
Yeah she's pretty amazing. Lol I kinda love her.
I was nine feet away from her last night in Charlotte. Her and her band was crucial. She funny as hell to and even more beautiful in person.
Man, Radio Music Society saxophone section is just the best...
This is the smartest song EVER! Such intelligent song writing! If people are not listening to this there is something wrong with them! Beautiful!
Generally love the groove in most of her songs !!!
Really has this repetitive feel in a lot of her tunes, snare hit on 3, bass line on 2&, 3, 4.
oh. my goodness. so good. sooooo good. genius status.
THIS IS GOLD!!!! brightened the hell outta my day!!!

More like Jaco meets Billie☺️
In fact, her name should be in this list. Why gender comparison? She is her own version.

She will definitely contribute to healing America, but this country needs more than just her. We need everyone. Together. :)

What a brilliant song, brilliantly sung by Esperanza.
I could listen to this song ten times in a row and love it more each time. Amazing as she is on the recording, she's even better live.
I can see how you think that but she's definitely not selling out. Esperanza is so amazing!!!!! She's introducing a whole new hip hop generation to jazz.
Saw her last weekend in Rochester, NY at the Jazz Festival. Fantastic. Can't get this song in particular out of my head.
Just saw Ms. Spalding perform live in Toronto.... my mind was blown. Her live show, it's like I've never heard music before. I was in awe.
OH THE POWER OF SONG! What a wonderful world we live in!
I must say that the video is fun to watch, too. I should keep this CD in my car and play it the next time I'm in a traffic jam. Maybe people will get out of their cars and start dancing.

Sadly this wonderful song never gets played on the radio. However, it's not junk, so it doesn't fit their standards.
I am here after hearing it on the radio
Saw her at Yoshi's Oakland in 2008, after stumbling on either on npr or RUclips in a search bass musicians. Whatta find! Solid Gold!
This song, this song is so, so wonderful. This is a cross between Weather Report and Manhattan Transfer. Great song by a great artist.
Heard the song like 1000 times and still I want to dance. What a girl! :D Moving like Michael Jackson, a voice that makes me think she is Charlie Parkers' sax and playing bass like Mingus, Chambers and Pastorius. And it all works together. Damn!
