Nah, lawsuits galore. For example, children are only allowed to be filmed for a small time. Its why do many infants and toddlers in shows are played by twins, like Mary Kate and Ashley Olson both playing Michelle on Full House. Each one could only legally he in front if the camera a certain amount. To be sure, they grossly exceeded that with Truman.
Repeat to yourself that "It's just a show, I should really just relax".
In the fictional universe of the Truman Show, the show creators already, probably through bribery/donations, rewrite the laws to be able to adopt a child as a corporation, so they could rewrite those filming limits. I've seen a lot of movies, with a lot of villains and evil characters, but "He was born in front of a live audience" is one of the COLDEST lines ever.
I like to imagine that Truman got out, sued the crap out of the TV Studio and then used his vast fortune to move to Fiji with Silvia.

@@x_mau9355 I mean you can't use someone's image to monetary value without their permission. It doesn't matter if it's a corporation that adopted him. It's no different than people using kids to make money in Hollywood. If the kids earned it, it's theirs. We have to assume Truman never signed over his right's to his image. Thus he's owed tons of money. Even if he was tricked into signing something at a young age most judges would side with Truman.

This movie might have been the most "ahead of its time" I've ever seen. It has really aged well, IMHO. So many themes of the internet age that hadn't really happened yet. Genius film.
You've obviously never seen THE first movie which not only accurately predicted Reality TV, but hilariously spoofed the entire concept. Albert Brooks' Real Life filmed way back in the late 70s.

How lucky are you two to have gone into this movie without any spoilers. When this movie came out in the 90s, everyone was aware of the entire premise. The tailor was spoilery, it was constantly playing on TV and everyone was talking about it. Until I started watching reaction videos, I was unaware of how mutch better this movie is when going into it blind. I really appreciate your reactions, because they allow us to revisit these movies with a new set of eyes.
The first thing the movie tells you is the premise.
Weren’t they told that Jim Carey performed in this? Regardless, the fans spoiled it.
Yeah, but those of us who watched this movie when it was first released, had the chance to watch what was basically a sci-fi movie that anticipated the voyeuristic evolution of television shows at the beginning of the new millennium. It didn't go as far as in the movie (which was meant to be dystopian), but shows like The Big Brother came out just a few years later and today we are here watching "reactions", that is waiting to discover other people's emotions and feelings while they enjoy the movie we already know.
This "prescient" quality of "The Truman Show" might be lost to people that grew up in the 2000s.

I recognize the interior of Truman's car, it was my first car. An old used '97 ford taurus. That thing was a BEAST. I put that car through hell as a teenager and it never let me down once, it even had a V6 engine. I like to think she's in car heaven now 😥
Same! I had a sliver one, but I didn't get it until 2011. It only lasted me until about 2015 or so.
Laura Linney is the wife, she's such a great actress.

Signing a government birth certificate is giving a corporation a level of parental rights over a child. It's just that most people don't realize that the government is incorporated.

In a corporation the worker don't get to elect their boss and HR, you're in a democracy I assume, be glad you have some sort of control over your government, If you're not satisfied with your institution take it upon your fellow electors.

Democracy dead out generations ago during the Reconstruction Era following Lincoln's War. Look up what the Organic Act of 1871 and the 14th Ammendment created and you'll start to see why my previous comment mentioned government birth certificates.
Besides, democracy isn't something to praise as it's just mob rule. It's just a breeding ground for a strong figure to take rule with unattainable promises. That's why the Gilded Age followed the Reconstruction Era, powerful Mercantile groups took deep roots in you democracy and began changing schooling, medicine, media, academia...
It could be argued that George Washington was not fighting for revolution but rather setting up another branch of the British East India Trading company. Compare the flag he used during the war, the Continental Colors, and the flag of the British East India Trading company and you'll see that they're remarkably identical. If you care so much about democracy than it's symbol, in the form of a flag, is rather important. I know it was for me when I was in the Marine Corps and simply read the standards and regulations for the flag.
I hate when people think they know everything but have only passed a fifth grade social studies test and parrot mainstream media. I'm sure if I just *vote harder* we'll really change the government.
Unfortunatly we are alredy there, im pretty sure in the eye's of the law (UK at least) each individual is regarded as their own corporation for thing like finance especially. If i recall right its the difference between a policeman and a police officer, the first covers comman law the latter covers corperate law....something like that...

I'm one of the people thinking Truman already knows something is wrong already at the beginning of the movie. He just discovers he's the ONLY one during the movie.
He plays a role, greeting the neighbors with the famous "Good morning, good afternoon" and so on, he gets push against the wall by the two guys, etc. The only thing he doesn't know is how the hell to get out of that prison.
When he sees his "father" he loses it, since it's the proof of the hoax. So he goes on playing and he also "kidnap" his wife so to find a way out. When the cop recognizes him I figured he can't go out with the help of nobody, so he plans to do it by himself.
He liked Silvia? Yes, but he used her as a decoy to divert the attention from his escape plan and when he realizes his water fear is induced by a fake death, played by an actor, he leaves screaming at the cameras to do better to stop him!
That's why he greets anyone with "Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!", to mock them, as saying "You thought you were acting, but I was the best actor." He pretended a life while all the actors were living a real one with him, sleeping with him (wife), working with him as colleagues and being his friend as his friend.
And he's a better actor. When he sees her wife's fingers crossed he proves it again.
And then people... have you tried to clap your hands in a shop? Nobody looks at you? Another proof he looked for, to check if his friend is totally involved.
Of course, he didn't know it all along, he discovered it at young age I think.
I love this movie.. it also kind of shows the volatile relationship of fathers and sons... the creator thought of himself as Truman's father... and he wasn't going to give his son up, even if it killed him... this movie has many levels. As always, great reaction. Thank you. 😊 You guys are becoming my favorite reaction channel.
The creator wanted to keep running the show to get money and promotions so he allowed for his fake father be written back in after he snuck back in. He needed to manipulate Truman to stay by doing this.

Some people might think that Christof's request to Truman at the end of the movie was rediculous, because why would Truman agree? Truman knows it is fake, the viewers know it is fake. Who would even watch it then? But in reality, there is also a similar show named "Big Brother", where people go and live together in a fake environment, knowing that everything is fake and people are watching the show also perfectly knowing that the actors in that show perfectly know it is fake too. But people still watch it for some reason. I guess humans are just weird. 😅
You two are the best reactors for two specific reasons. First, you actually watch the movie and react without talking over the dialogue. If you have something to say, you always pause it. I don't know how many times people talk over a critical point in the movie and then get confused by what's going on later. People also miss some of the favorite lines or jokes that we've been waiting for them to react to, but they miss it. Secondly, you don't ever chime in on your personal philosophies as an ongoing commentary some people constantly do. We're here to watch you watch a movie that we already love. So well done ladies! You do it right. By the way, I'd love it if you watched the 1978 movie "Foul Play" with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase. It's super great. You two would love it.

If you watch what is in the the camera angles and listen to what the people are talking about, what is actually happening is it is peppered product placement.
The Truman Show version of advertising.
Real TV shows and movies do it all the time.
If you see something with the brand name or company logo on it in a TV show or movie that is product placement and that company paid to have their product promoted in that way.
Apple does it a lot, I mean all the time.
That is why you see iPhones and Apple computers in movies and TV shows so much.
Honestly, it could he argued that mass media only exists for product advertisement. Watch the old Beverly Hillbillies, Honeymooners, etc... and the had placement was done exactly like what was shown here. It's made to he less overt today with logos being clearly seen in frame but advertisement has come first with entertainment coming second since the beginning.

Great reaction! Another great Jim Carrey movie with a crazy mind-bending premise is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, can't recommend it enough, I think it's a great choice for reaction channels if you haven't seen it!
This is one of three "serious" movies made by JC: The Cable Guy, The Truman Show, The Man on the Moon. They are three masterpieces. Good you have one of them 👍

this movie is great. so important for people to watch it. I'm very glad both of you realized the absolute evil of these show-makers. Many reactors are like "I am starting to think they shouldn't be doing this." lol Those reactions make me sick thinking people are so oblivious to one of the worst evils ever to walk this earth.
If people realize that all the crew and actors on the show, all their incomes are dependent 100% on Truman remaining "in his place." So when you see them in the end come together and start marching to hunt him down like a lynch mob of "friends and family," it should make very clear how horrifying his perspective must be. They have MUCH motivation to break, oppress, and keep him obedient. Thousands leeching off of one. Ayn Rand to the 10th power.
Another thing I think people miss is when he finds his dad again, he says "i never stopped believing." THEN he hugs him and looks sad, terrible, and cries - not happy tears but sad tears. There's a reason for that. His heart is breaking because in that moment, while they're framing their "oscar shot," he's realizing internally that his father is ALSO part of the scam. His father was his last hope of real family/love since everyone was working to keep his father away, it would see to him like his father was the rogue agent not part of the conspiracy. But at that point, he realizes his father is part of the sham, too. At that point he was realizing they were all fake, from wife to mother to friend to father.

Girls, its a total spoof of reality TV years before reality TV was everywhere. Think about it. You are so used to Reality TV everywhere that you take it for granted. MTVs Real World, Survivor, The dozens and dozens of ridiculous Reality TV shows. The Real Wives of blah blah blah etc. This movie is genius because it raises all the issues of Reality TV, just in the extreme ultimate way.
But now you need to watch THE very first movie done about reality TV. Its called REAL LIFE, directed by Albert Brooks. Filmed in the mid 70s. 30 years before reality TV. Its hilarious.

This movie was not like the other Jim Carrey Movies. I saw this in the theater with my friends back in those olden times. We came out a bit be-fuddled expecting something weird and outlandish. But now that I am older I see it's a movie ahead of its time.
It’s the most popular dramatic Jim Carrey movie. Everybody loves this movie, it had a great affect on the world… however it didn’t have a positive mental impact on the world. People started to think that they were being watched by the whole world too
… also, I need to add that all Jim Carrey movies are different from eachother. He’s one of the only comedians who’s versatile and plays different characters in all of his movies. That’s one reason why he’s the best

For an outstanding but VERY different Jim Carrey experience, try Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Also has a brilliant turn from Kate Winslet (who's almost always brilliant).
As others have noted, the premise of this movie was pretty well known going in, so people didn't get caught up in the sinister nature of the setup in which Truman was place - this allowed the movie to be seen more of as an absurd comedic drama. So back then, it was a crazy premise and a fun ride watching it unfold.

The handsy twins were putting Truman up against an advertisement for the cameras. He is often used as a vehicle for advertising throughout the film, just like your RUclips videos 😅 at least you know it’s happening though

I think the movie Videodrome predicited some aspects of social media today.
The patient reacted like that because they weren't actually a patient and they werent actually asleep so they didn't expect to have their leg almost amputated when it was all supposed to be fake..

The creator of the show decided who he wanted Truman to be married to. Meeting " Meryl ", who was an actress, not a real person was forced on him. They were controlling his whole life on a closed in set without him knowing it. Everyone were actors and actresses. Sylvia tried explaining it to him but they didn't want him to know. That's why they took her away. His parents weren't even his real parents. His real mother didn't want to have a baby so she gave him away to them. It's all explained in the movie. Sylvia isn't in Fiji. They lied to Truman saying where they were taking her.
The real villain in all of this was ghe man in the bathtub, 'Montgomery von birdseye'.He came up with the idea to the producers for trump's fear of water. so that he could stay in the bath most of his life to watch him and feel privileged..

I love this movie, which is essentially a dystopian science-fiction story, and I think the last scene (“What else is on?”) is one of the best in movie history. However, the basic idea was not original. In my opinion, it was stolen from Philip K. Dick’s science-fiction novel, “Time Out of Joint” (1959). Dick is the author of books and stories that have been made into many films, including “Blade Runner,” “Minority Report,” “Total Recall,” and others.
Ah, yes! PKD, the master of "what is reality?" and "what is human?" themed stories.

I love this movie so much. I can't believe you hadn't had the premise ruined for you already. It is still so relevant. If you're looking for more good Jim Carrey films to watch, I recommend "I Love You, Philip Morris" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".

Since we don't get to see what happens after Truman leaves I will speculate...
Truman would likely meet up with "Silvia". With nowhere else to go she'll take him back to her place and show him how she spent her life as Free Truman activist.
Truman will now be world famous and would likely not be able to freely exist in the general public. He would also be financially set. No worries about needing job.
Susan and Truman would likely come up with the idea of actually following through with the crazy suggestion of moving to Fiji. It is a very remote part of the world away from most people and rather expensive. But not to worry since they are loaded with money.
Truman and Susan, adamant on privacy and independence, live out the rest of their lives unrecorded, photographed and most likely childless sipping on cocktails living that beach life.
Until boredom sets in about 10 years later. Devoid of TV, Truman catches wind from some local tourists, who are more vested in watching a show on their cell phones rather than enjoying a 2,000 dollar per night Cabana, that there's been a new reality show created. With not one but several young kids being brought up on their own reality show unbeknown to them.
Truman rushes back to tell Susan all about it. Enraged and with nothing better to do, with tons of money and resources, they set out to "free" these new kids from their fake invented TV show prison's.
And maybe after they succeed society decides to move on making all forms of visual media obsolete as entertainment. Which brings us back around to the way of life we see on Star Trek :)

I remember watching this when it came out and the general emotion was different than I see from your generation. It's really interesting. We were rooting for Truman, but you guys get angry. Maybe because it was such a foreign concept and it seems more possible now. Back then, I think MTV Real World was the only thing resembling reality TV and most people I was around thought that was stupid. It's just cool to see how people roughly the same age watching it 25 years apart have such different visceral reactions. LOL

Syvia was probably contracted to be a flirty extra, whileas "Meryl" was contracted to play Truman's wife, & probably renegotiated her contract when Christoff wanted her to give birth to Truman's child!
Everyone are actors. "Mom" & "dad" were contracted to take the designated newborn out of the real hospital & across LA to the domed set. Truman has never seen a real sky, a real sunset; or anything else that isn't staged using actors & special effects!
The studio light imitating a star in a constellation fell because saboteurs (like Sylvia) have been undermining the show. Because, although the outside world is clearly dystopian, a movement exists to *free* him!
The set fills the giant dome visible from space. Seahaven Island plus the token mainland, with its fake nuclear power plant, is the set. I'd imagine the mainland is mainly a staging area & storage facility for large, practical props like cars & trucks that visit the island. The fake cop who inexplicably knew Truman's name was probably a bit actor who wanted a role on the show, & two hours before his appearance was in his living room enjoying the show when he got a frantic call!
The Truman Bar is no different than if dedicated fans of Star Wars created a bar decorated to resemble the Catina from Episode 4! Staff wear makeup to resemble aliens...
Thirty years on the air... I'd imagine audience pushback forces the studio to give him his overdue 30 years' back pay!
The fans were invested in Truman's life for 30 years. When he started rejecting his fake world, his *true* fans rooted for him to rebel, to escape his prison.
A fan theory is that his pal Marlon was a similar victim, an involuntary child actor who'd likewise grown up onset. His absence spent "traveling" was at rehab overcoming his imposed alcoholism. A cut scene even showed Marlon finding Truman, but not stopping him!
P.s., about the patient's reaction during the fake operation? Scalpels are super ridiculously sharp. Just resting the blade on the unsuspecting extra's knee was super painful!
Poor Meryl... Normally, "the hospital" was where she got to rest off camera; & talk to family & friends. Instead, Truman's unpredictability forced her to participate in a bogus operation!
I imagine the hallways & rooms existed in the hospital for injuries. Real doctors are brought in & prepped. They stay in character as a resident of the town the whole time that Truman is in the room.
Did either one of you think the strait separating island from mainland looks fake as hell?
The part that messes with me is, the girl from college that he's in love with, and she's in love with him.... WHY DIDN"T THEY JUST LET THEM GET MARRIED and let that be the continuation of Truman's story? They literally could've allowed the two people who actually love each other, one of them being the main character, to just play it out naturally, and Truman would've just lived in the town forever, happy, with no care to his surroundings at all. So dumb.
Sylvia didn't seem like the type to sign a contract and commit the rest of her life to the show. The rest of the cast were already signed on and the producers and everyone else were ready to go ahead.
@@honovy4393 Literally everyone on the show signed up to commit their lives to the show. It was just happy accident that Her and Truman got on. Let them have it, is what I'm saying. It's dumb to not.
Because the producers knew if there was real love the risk would be too great of her revealing the truth, as she did.

The closest thing we have to the Truman show is the mommy vloggers shoving a camera in a child's face from the moment they're born without their consent. There have been children that have grown up and have started speaking out about how terrible it is and how it has affected the rest of their lives.
