What some people miss is that to get the information he needed from Lisa, Vinnie had to know exactly what questions to ask - which means that he knew the answers already. He'd already spotted the same things Lisa did, but he needed someone to testify about them.

4:15 "Once they get you in a room, that's when you get your lawyer". Actually ... even some law professors recommend never saying anything to the police without a lawyer present. If police show up to your house and start asking questions because you are a suspect, even before they put you in handcuffs or read you your rights or indicate you might be arrested ... from the very first second ... you start refusing to answer without a lawyer present. That is true whether you are guilty or innocent. Even if you 100% know you are not guilty, you still don't answer questions without a lawyer present. You gain nothing by talking to them on your own: there is only risk, no possible reward.

You are correct, but important note, you have to actively invoke your right to silence, you can't just say nothing at all, you need to say or request through writing, or I assume sign language, that you are using your right to silence and THEN not say anything. I think it's incredibly stupid, but that's what the courts ruled.

Most people miss the level of brilliance he did in the questioning of the guy regarding the grits. He did ask if they were instant grits of course to make sure that the guy's breakfast took 20 minutes. But I don't think most people picked up on the question of whether he likes them regular creamy or al dente. Al dente means they are underdone so they would be crunchy. If he did not ask that first, the guy could have came back and said that he likes his grits undercooked. But being the good trial lawyer that he was he made sure that that was covered

Joe Pesci "Vinnie also came in "Home Alone" and Fred Gwynne who played the judge was "Herman Munster" in "The Munsters" and the guy who played "Billy Gambino" is Ralph Macchio who also played in "The Karate Kid" and needless to say, that the beautiful, cute fiancee of Vinnie is "Marisa Tomei" who not only played in "What Women Want", "Spider Man", "The Perez Family", "Untamed Heart" and also in many other movies. Cool shows ladies. Goodday. Adios. PS: After the two school boys left the store, there went two other guys who went in and robbed and killed the store clerk. Even though they never showed the two, towards the end when the sheriff went to go double check again on the make of the car, he had just been notified that in a place called Jasper County, two guys had just been arrested in the last two days were driving a car just like the two defendants and with them the cops found a gun, the same kind of gun that was used in the killing and the robbery of the store clerk. Good move girls. Keep up the good work. Adios.

...When we see Vinnie sleeping like a baby in jail (with a smile on his sleeping face), it changes the context of all the prior running gags, in which Vinnie and his girl Mona Lisa Vito couldn't sleep because of the noise: It was NEVER the presence of noise alone. Rather, it was ••unfamiliar, sudden RURAL noises•• that kept him awake. As soon as he was surrounded by familiar CITY noises (which the prison riot sounds were close enough to resemble)... Vinnie slept just fine.
    ••••
The "Two Yutes..." "What is a Yute?" business, made it into the film because of a real-life accent confusion problem between Joe Pesci and the film's director. After the misunderstanding of the actor and director was cleared up, the creators knew it was funny enough that it damn sure had to be put into the story.

"...no sleep... I guess that's so much better..."
What makes it hard to sleep in a place isn't noises, it's _unfamiliar_ noises. People who live near train tracks sleep through trains going by. Their brain recognizes it as a 'harmless' signal and ignores it instead of waking up to deal with a potential threat. Vinny wasn't used to the farm whistle or the train sounds or the screeching owl, and so his mind woke him up to deal with the 'threat' they posed.
Then Vinny is in jail, and there's a prison riot, and his brain... shuts it all out. It reminds him of home... Brooklyn. It's a joke about how crime-riddled that place is, that gang fights and so on are _so common_ there that a prison riot sounds like home, and so he's comfortable with it. And, to be fair, New York has frequently had serious crime issues, being both a very large city _and_ a serious tourist location (as opposed to other large cities which don't attract as much tourism). Both of those _tend to_ be associated with higher crime rates (the city because you end up with more people in poverty but no one in the community to help them unlike more rural settings, as well as more access to drugs and other big money crimes; the tourism because tourists are both tempting targets for criminal activity as they almost never do anything about it since they don't live there and don't know their way around, and _also_ tourists are more frequently criminals themselves, compared to the average for their level of wealth, for much the same reason, you'll be gone in a few days and be much harder to track down, plus some view themselves as more entitled and break local laws like taking artifacts and so on).
"...he's transforming into this awesome lawyer..."
They showed this early on. What Vinny doesn't understand is _procedure._ And he is 100% correct that they don't teach that in law school. The _discovery_ bit he should have known, and explains why it took him six tries to pass the bar, but court procedure is learned by being part of a firm where they take you to court and cover the bits not mentioned in law school. And there is a good reason to do it this way. Law school is there to teach you _law,_ in a fairly general and generic way that is applicable to a large set of situations. _Procedure_ varies between courts, sometimes between judges, and changes more frequently than law does. It's like the difference between learning to be a doctor and knowing how some particular hospital works.
They told us that Vinny was good at arguing, twice (once with his cousin mentioning it, once with Vinny mentioning it to the prosecutor when describing how he became a lawyer), and we've seen that in the flirty argument he had with his girlfriend, in the repeated negotiations he had with the guy from the pool hall, and even his interactions with his cousin whom he convinced to give him a shot.
So at this point in the movie we're seeing the switch-over from _procedure_ to _argument,_ argument which he's been shining at this whole time. That, and his natural suspicious nature and sarcasm are what make him so effective here. It's also likely why he's never been to trial. Arguments can be made in writing, and so in personal injury stuff he did this same sort of thing, but using the written word instead speaking, and was likely fairly effective. Honestly, having him on a team with one other person who's really good at the procedural stuff would be a _frightening_ combo to go up against. As it is, the procedure things _can_ cause Vinny some serious problems. Sometimes you have time limits on when you can send in a form, and if the form is filled out improperly it can mess up a case, too. It's _less likely_ to be a problem than not knowing law or being able to argue, but it's still a bit risky. If there were someone as good at procedure as he is at arguing, and the two worked together on a case, I'd be peeing myself if I had to go up against them, it'd be a perfect sword and shield combo. The only thing that would work for me is if I was sure I had _all_ the facts on my side, and honestly I'd ask them what they had early on to see if I just wanted to drop the case.
    "...he was asking the witness..."
This is my favorite part of the movie, because it _humanizes_ the judge. The judge is just a person, too, and can _also_ make mistakes.
"...he wants to be his friend..."
Well, to be fair, _good_ lawyers on either side _in a sense_ don't care about the outcome of a case. The good ones aren't 'trying to win', they 'trying to find the truth' as best they can, and present the case as best they can for deliberation. The prosecutor was going on the information he had at the time. Given what the prosecutor know, he was making all the right calls and doing his job well. Vinny came in and found that the initial evidence the prosecution had was faulty, which is problematic, but the prosecution got _more_ information, which he used to continue the case because... well, let's face it... what _actually_ happened (with the two other young men in a car of the same color showing up within the 20 minute span after the two in this movie left) is _extremely_ unlikely. This entire movie doesn't happen if they're driving a different car, or it's a different color, or they have different tires. Moreover, being a good sport and admitting your opponent was really good at what they did is something we should all strive towards, and it's nice to show, within the movie, that this was a comedy-drama, that there weren't _villains_ involved (just the two guys who were never on screen that actually shot the clerk). I think that, alone, makes this an _amazing_ movie because it doesn't really contain a 'bad guy'. Not the judge, he's just a stickler for the rules, not the prosecutor, he was just going with the evidence he had at the time. So many modern movies portray one side or the other in this as 'evil', the bad guy, and the other as the 'good' guy, but that sort of thing isn't how it should work.
Another good legal drama this way is "A Few Good Men". There's an actual adversary there, a villain, but not among the legal group. The judge isn't evil, the prosecutor isn't evil, the defense team isn't evil. The only evil person is the one who did something severely wrong. It's a great movie, and it's the way I think legal dramas should unfold more often.
Of course, in real life sometimes the lawyers _are_ evil, or at least incompetent.
"...he dresses like a thug, still..."
And does in one of his most famous roles, too. Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas... for which he won an Academy Award, and deserved it. Joe is a great actor, did a lot of good work. I can honestly recommend several movies he's been in. He does comedy basically, but many of his comedies include other aspects. With Honors is a comedy-drama... and it's good.
"...that's why you need solid evidence..."
You'd be _astonished_ (and sickened) to know how little evidence most cases actually have, and how often people go to prison for crimes they know they didn't commit. Most cases come down to 'someone said so' and how believable you think they are... which is usually nothing more than a measure of how confident they seem, _not_ what information they are imparting. But the main reason that lots of innocent people sit in prisons is that they are under threat. The prosecution will ask them to be held in jail during the trial, which can last months or longer, _or_ they can plead guilty, take a plea deal, and be out in one month instead. All while presenting the supposed evidence they have (some of which is sometimes mistakes or outright fabrications).
And we don't just do this in law, humans do it _all the time._ It's why people believe conspiracy theories or

Iirc, I read somewhere that Vinny's character is meant to be dyslexia, which is why he had so much trouble passing the bar exam. However, as it was shown in several other ways throughout the movie, he's naturally talented at debating/arguing which is why he did so well once he actually got into action in the courtroom. Apparently they weren't sure how to portray his dyslexia in the film so they didn't include it in the movie.

If the defendant in 12 Angry Men had Vinnie as their lawyer...
A very interesting connection! If the defense lawyer in that scenario had done a better job of deconstructing the prosecution's case, the jurors would not have had such a difficult time sorting through all that evidence themselves. (And there wouldn't have been such interesting plays / films to watch; most compelling stories are born of conflict and things not going as well as they could / should.)
[I started a soap-box about the criminal justice system, but decided it was too much. I'l just enjoy the movies, and leave the more serious discussions of real-world issues for some other time.]

Try Grits - Its all about HOW you season it - lots of salt and butter or cajun spices with shrimps - they are delicious - but if you don't season them properly they are gross.

11:36 "There are only _two_ ways to answer. Guilty or not guilty."
It's at _this_ point in the movie that I find myself at a loss just what it was that first got Vinny _interested_ in the law. I mean, evidently, he did _not_ find his interest from watching legal dramas, because everyone in legal dramas (in every single case) wears a suit and understands what the question, "How do the defendants plead?" means. I'm not saying that legal dramas are gold standards for iron-clad accuracy that never take any literary license, but I think they make _this_ much clear.

28:36 "He has... a speech... problem."
Yeah. Which makes me wonder how _this_ guy became a lawyer.
