    Lithium Batteries should be recharged when they hit 20 to 30 percent, for them to last longer. Ni-Cad batteries are the only ones that need to be fully discharged, before recharging, due to a memory problem that can develop in Ni-cads. This is the information I've learned, since I've been flying Mavic Drones. I don't know if you will harm your batteries if you drain them all the way, but from what I've previously learned, optimization would be not to allow them to drain all the way down, and most definitely do not manually discharge them.

    Thanks for the great video. I actually bought a Greaval UV-5R but it's laid out like your radio. Once I saw your cheat sheet and the notations of Ward, Stake, and Bishop I had to laugh as we have something in common. I'll have to build a cheat sheet like that too. It's great to hear/see another brother HAM operator (I'm brand new - just passed my Technician test). GMRS license cost me $70.00 for family for 10 years (rules might have changed since 2015). Also, power, and permissable use of FRS and GMRS radio regulations may have also changed since then as well. Anyone can listen anywhere without a license, but transmissions may only be made by certain equipment and or licenses permissions.

    Unlike NiCd batteries, lithium batteries love to be topped off and kept full. Every time you completely deplete a lithium battery you damage it. They give full power all the way until the end and do not have 'memory' like NiCd batteries do.

    Having got my Amateur Radio License in 1993, I can tell you that, transmitting at 5 watts for any length of time will make your HT so HOT it will burn your hand!
    Once the radio gets too HOT to handle, you can either set it down, reduce power or just turn it off to cool down.
    I can't even imagine how hot this tiny thing will get at 8 watts!!!!!

    No do not fully discharge lithium batteries. You are better to not cycle lithium batteries because the battery life are based on the number of cycles. Also lithium batteries do not have memory. Keep them charged up.

    Aaron, thanks for your time and effort posting this video. Going to get one of these to use up in "The Great White North" as CB has been dead and gone for many years now up here in Canada. I've surfed the Net for opinions on this radio and even though it comes in at quite an incredibly low price, the overall feedback is surprisingly positive. I'm a long time retired trucker but for some irrational reason decided to get back behind the wheel and head off into the west coast mountains where communication with other trucks heading the other way is critical, especially during the winter. The frequencies available on this particular model are used by logging trucks going "up" & "down" on the resource roads but also by highway trucks when not interfering with the loggers. Thanks again and never mind the few comments from wannabe radio cops. If they ever get out of the "shack" and get a real job, they might just understand why the FCC (and our federal dicks) make as much sense as a goldfish. Come to think of it though, those fish make way more sense than some peckerhead that wants to lecture anyone on "The Rules". Your video came through 5x5.

    A lot of confusing misstatements. First FRS, at the time you made the video it was 1/2 watt max TX power like you said but that radio can only go as low as just over 1 watt. More than FRS (narrow band) allowed at that time plus isn't certified for FRS. Second, it's called GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) (wide band) and also not legally allowed to be used with that radio. The GMRS frequencies you chose allow up to 50 watts TX power. The BF- F8HP power is fine for those frequencies. Long story short, not legal for FRS or GMRS but in a life or death emergency it may be used IF YOU HAVE NO OTHER WAY TO GET HELP. Also GMRS does require a license and at the time of your video it was $85 for a 5-year (I believe) license. When I renewed my license in 2017 it was a 10-year license like it is currently. Soon the License fee will only be $35 for a 10-year license.

    technically you may not use this radio to transmit of GMRS or FRS radio frequencies because it puts out to many watts. You may not use the radio on any ham frequency without a license to do so.

    What did they expect people to do during a major emergency like we're in the midst of now, if we cannot even go take a licensing test? I just ordered a basic BaoFeng radio handheld
    this past week. Been studying for the Tech., but there's nowhere right now in LI NY to go test. Also, should you set the main power output for the radio for listening only at Low Power?
    Or is it only an issue for transmitting? I already have the CHIRP software on my PC, and I'm conversant with that.

    Can you lock the push-to-talk button to prevent anyone from inadvertently transmitting? I don't have a ham radio license but I do intend on possibly buying this radio to use as a scanner to monitor the ham radio frequencies and any other bands that this radio is legally programmed to receive. And I would also like it for emergency situations where I can legally transmit without a license.

    I have found one issue with buying a baofeng that runs 8 watts. GM RS radios are not to put out more than 5 watts per FCC regulations. Also when you program in family Radio Service you are not to transmit with more than .5 watts of power. Also with FRS you are to have a fixed antenna. This makes the BaoFang 8 watt radio not acceptable for family service radio or general Mobile Radio Service. Which I find to be ridiculous.

  • @DCJNewsMedia

    I guess I missed it...but in general how far from one hand unit to the next will this go....the ones we used at a small agency one time worked about 9/10 mile to 2 miles on 4 watt with high gain antenna....but not a 15.6 inch antenna...... so I'm wondering if you think with a long antenna and 8 watts if we could get 1.5 to ,3 miles from hand held to hand held approximately.... and can you buy like 4 to 8 at a discount with the 15.6 antennas and a cord for frequency setting.... etc
    Thanks

      not exactly you have to program in the frequencies that it is supposed to scan. it has a 127 channel memory but wont just scan through every channel ever lol thats a shit load of channels

    • @thiscorrosion900
      @thiscorrosion900 4 года назад

      I'd use CHIRP software via the PC to load up a bunch of your local repeaters, HAM frequencies, and some weather and Fire Emergency etc., stuff, and it'll scan through the range
      of the channels you've programmed. It's a lot faster using the software via the PC link. Otherwise you have to program each frequency or repeater by hand. It doesn't
      work like a Bearcat scanner, it will only scan the frequencies you've pre-programmed.

      You have to have the FRS frequencies programmed into the Channel mode of your radio. You or someone with ham radio knowledge can add these FRS frequencies to your radio using a programming cable and software. To obtain the FRS frequencies you can do a search on Google.

    Hi! I would like to get 2-3 of these radios for my family (BH-F8HP).Mostly for If Shit Hits The Fan, emergencies and for when we are out hunting/camping.
    How much do you charge to program them?

    • @Coalrollinfurry
      @Coalrollinfurry 6 лет назад

      Kon Kurts programing is best learned on your own, there are only 127 memories and thousands of frequencies on both bands.

    I went to the familyprepnetwork.org and it takes me to a website that wants me to pay almost $18.00 a month to join. Why is that?

    Beware: not all BF-F8 radios are alike. On mine, the battery charge indicator is a fake, non-functional display.

    Hi there, I have purchased a Baofeng UV-5RE and when you go on channel mode it's 127 and you can't change the frequency or channel - it's like it's locked there - do you have anything to help? I have seen your video and it's helpful. Please help with this problem.

      Press and hold down the # key on the bottom right corner. It toggles the lock and unlock option for each channel. It has a picture of a blue key next to the # button.

      +Julio Noda If you have a Ham radio that has a Family Radio Service (FRS) frequency programmed into it, then anyone without a license can broadcast on that frequency. The power output on the FRS frequencies is limited to 1/2 watt. It basically makes your Ham Radio act just like a regular Walkie-Talkie that anyone can buy at Walmart. With the Ham radio that I sell, I have pre-programmed a number of FRS frequencies into it so anyone can use the radio. In addition, my Ham radio will communicate with many of the standard walkie-talkies on the market.

    • @N3OST
      @N3OST 7 лет назад +3

      but it is technically not LEGAL to do so...because this radio puts out more than 1/2 watt

    • @N3OST
      @N3OST 7 лет назад +3

      Ham radios fail the FRS/GMRS legal requirements at least in 3 areas: 1) they have detachable antennas, 2) they provide minimum power superior than 0.5W ERP, 3) They are not Part 95 certified... Sure that in an emergency situation any frequency is allowed. If one needs a good and legal GMRS radio (no exclusive FRS frequencies) there are a few higher power versions available. I guess the point is not how many got caught using ham radios on these frequencies or whether the FCC can easily enforce it, but the question is why one would consciously break the law when there are legal options? It is a personal choice.

      Ham radios FAIL!!!??? PLZ Michael do some research before u make such assanine comments!!! Ham/Amateur radio operators have been around for 100yrs! They have been there to assist disasters all over the world! Whenever all other types of comms have failed...Hams will assist! Hams have the ability to communicate across Continents!, Not just neighborhoods as do GMRS/FMRS radios do...Conversely, Hams do not operate by FMRS/GMRS FEC REGS...GMRS/FMRS Radios operate under what the FEC has established & THAT WHICH HAMS HAVE OPERATED UNDER FOR YEARS!!! Go to ARRL.ORG & review...after that...then you can be a BIG BOY & COMMENT!

    • @ChuckBradfordPhotography
      @ChuckBradfordPhotography 6 лет назад +1

      Your reading comprehension is questionable, nothing you said addressees anything Michael said. Context: Ham radios fail the FRS/GMRS legal requirements, this is true, these radios are not designed to transmit on FRS/GMRS frequencies, and the reasons are stated.

    That is not proper battery maintenance. It's not good for that much fluctuation in battery cycles. I learned to keep a battery at 80-100% for the best life out of a battery. So when it gets to 80% then charge.

    GMRS... You DO need a license. It's about $70, and lasts 10 years. I dont believe you can transmit on FRS or GMRS with this radio. Check with FCC.GOV...

      @AaronKGilbert  5 лет назад +1

      I apologize to the FCC for breaking their laws. I also apologize for going 5 miles an hour over the speed limit every time I drive a car. Let me know when they are ready to enforce that law limiting the broadcast power of FRS to only 1/2 watt.
