    Just a note, with the PTT button in channel mode. You can program it to transmit to a blank channel, and the radio will just not transmit when you push PTT. I did that for all of the channels I scan.

      The PTT button, or Push To Talk, will switch you over to transmitting when held. This is what requires a HAM license in the US so in Jimmy T's case, he programmed it so the PTT didn't do it in his case.

      FRS, GMRS and MURS are all now LICENSED BY RULE. I am pretty sure (with exception; GMRS requires a license, no exam just pay $70'00). Conduct yourselves accordingly. That's that. Do not interrupt others and do not be ignorant/rude/profane, or otherwise negative. The FCC does not have the time, manpower or resources to track down all the people/children/families/hikers/campers/workers using 0.5W, 2W or 5W frequencies...that are provided for public uses anyway! It is ridiculous and it is obvious. Furthermore, these are bands that do not interfere with amateur Ham radio operators anyway, so I really do not understand the technician license holders getting so irate over people showing an interest in the exact same system/hobby that they are interested in! That is also RIDICULOUS! Why would I care if anyone gets a fine? Instead of encouragement and positive support it is "You don't have a license. I do! You aren't allowed to do that. I am!" If that is what amateur radio clubs are all about I'm going to have nothing to do with them, or their shite licenses.

    The extra watts with a good Nagoya or Diamond antenna and you have a very good emergency radio.
    The great thing about the uv5r is the price. I recommend getting the originals, they are about 22 dollars on Amazon and make excellent backups for your faraday cage.
    I have a couple BFF8HP's with NA-771's and they pick up damn near everything in my AO with excellent clarity. They also have CTCSS and DCS scan capabilities.
    Highly recommend this model as your backbone, its not that expensive, and once you learn to program it manually you won't find a better radio in the price range.

    Communications plays a role in almost any disaster or emergency situation. Your ability to reach out, and get the help you need, is not only about your radio gear, but also your ability to use the gear and radio spectrum effectively. The radio by itself is useless.
    Think of training for survival and emergency communications like a First aid course, or some other course which gives you a specialised skill and you will inevitably find yourself asking whether or not you should get an amateur radio license. The answer short and simple is YES! This way you can add a skill to your Survival skillset, and be able to make the best of the tools on your communications toolbox.
    Finally, amateur radio is a utility. The training and practice we do in amateur radio are no different than my own tactical training, self-defense training, first aid, or hiking trips in the back country. Take it seriously, because it can safe your life, or help you save a life.
    This video is awesome :)
    Thanks again TUP

I feel bad about it still. The radio didn't reach very far, even with a Nagoya 20 inch whip antenna. It was a ridiculously big antenna. Still I recieved almost nothing. My advice to anyone who wants a baofeng is to save your money for something more high quality like a Yaesu or an ICom, get a base station if you actually want to communicate with more than static. I'm a ham from canada. Rules to be a ham in canada are kind of strict. That is all a possible explanation for my sour experience with it. But I am not letting it get me down. @@imjustmetoo7419 It still picks up the emergency weather stations just fine from almost any front porch, and that could be critical in a disaster situation. I've seen people mod their baofengs on youtube to reach crazy distances. It can be done. I just believe that I am a poor study at ham lol. I threw money at the problem and it got me nowhere. A good ham with some tinfoil and copper cable can do wonders. They're not wrong when they describe the unit as being incredibly versatile. It is a platform you can use to do great things. Again, I regret selling my model. Especially since I live in the countryside. In rural parts. It could be handy in this situation regardless. For the price, you can't go wrong. Good review, I have the UV-5R and really enjoy it for the price. When it comes to higher power radios remember, you have to double your watts to increase your antenna's db. Technically speaking although the 8 watt HT does double the UV-5R's power the increase in db at 8 watts is still minimal. The single most important factor in a radios performance is the operator and the operators skill level not the output power. Thanks for the video I might pick one up just for fun

      Congratulations well done. I'm just considering the idea of Ham Radio. Not sure of what I could use it for right now. Years ago back in my youth when CB became the thing because of the movie Convoy I had an AM CB radio but they outlawed them in the UK and forced us to use FM at at max 2 watts.. You could shout further and also all the school kids got them and it was a nightmare from school finish time till past midnight so it died. Some guys kept their AM radios with SSB and would DX a lot. But for the most part it's was Breaker Breaker 19 do I have a copy. Then the usual what's your handle, mine was Dick Turpin and the conversation went something like what was my power reading what is your twenty etc etc nothing of any real interest people transfixed on how far you where getting out for distance and clarity. Then power mikes would bleed over and block any opportunity to have a conversation. So looking into the Ham side now, I'm coming up on 66 and now live in Canada, lots more of open country here than the UK so more chance of bugging out for the weekend away from the hustle and bustle of civilization

    I bought one on a lark and like it except for a couple of design flaws that really aggravate me. There is space in the memory for 127 channels, but no provision to skip channels in scan, except through the chirp software. I have an older handheld receiver (AR8000) where the scanning is much more sensibly set up - there are banks you can switch between, and you can lock out channels with nothing interesting or with too much interference through the keypad. This omission really bugs me, because as a firmware engineer, I know it isn't that hard to do, yet is very useful.
    If the BF-F8HP could do this, I would program repeater settings for places I go to, and simply pick the ones that are appropriate.
    Another thing that bugs me is the A/B display handling. I would like to be able to commit the two lines to identifier _and_ frequency.
    It may be that there is some way to do this through the keypad that I haven't discovered yet, if so, let me know.
    I hate it when otherwise good products are 95% right, but the 5% is aggravating.

    yea u can use it as a scanner but it scans much much slower than an actual scanner....if you're just going to use it to scan then buy a scanner such as the Uniden BC75XLT or the BC125AT. However, if you do plan to get your license, then get it. I would still get an actual scanner though on the side. I have the BC125AT, and I love it. I was at Walmart today with it, and it automatically picked up walmart's radio when a CS rep transmitted as the BC125AT has the close call feature. That's epic shit!

    Thank you TheUrbanPrepper. There was so much information here I'm going to have to watch this again.
    The 100% backward compatibility approach with this radio and the standard UV-5R is an excellent feature by Baofeng and quite rightly that significance shouldn't be underestimated.
    In an emergency situation, having commonality with your equipment, especially items such as batteries and chargers is exceptionally useful and allows their sharing between devices and people if necessary, especially useful if yours are unavailable or inaccessible, to get comms up and running again and more importantly to keep them there. In this scenario it's also great that people will be able to use another's radio with little or no additional training, as they'll hopefully be well used to using their own.
    I wish this type of interoperability would be more widely adopted in all walks of life.

    Does BaoFeng or any other company carry a 2 way radio that can reach 20-30 miles and takes rechargeable batteries that doesn't require a license? If not or if so what brand and model would you recommend?

    • @weirdweaver149
      @weirdweaver149 7 лет назад

      I recommend getting a license. It's not hard to get a Tech class and for that type of range your wanting the only thing license free is a cell-phone.

    • @edcjunkie
      @edcjunkie 7 лет назад

      No one does. The FCC isn't going to allow you to pump out enough EM radiation to reach 20-30 miles without being certified to do so.

    The UV5r is a 4 watt radio. So you are actually getting an extra 4 watts of power. Also the UV5r comes with a 1800mAh battery. The charger is a 500mAh per hour charger so the 2000 mAh battery will only take four hours. Now my big 4500 mAh extended batteries take 9 hours.

    Great review! I've been looking into getting the UV-5R, but now I'm glad I saw this. The new model looks like the way to go. After upgrading the battery and antenna on a UV-5R, I'd be pretty close to the same price.

    Good comparison between the BF-F8HP and UV-5R. Thats exactly what I was looking for!
    I can tell you are relatively enthusiastic about radios. You should get your license! Go for your Technician Class to get started!!
    While we're here, just a heads up on a few things. This is all to the best of my knowledge (and please correct anything I say thats not accurate) and I'll do my best to try and help and hopefully encourage you. I don't want to come off as the radio police, I don't do many posts, but I do hope I can help on a few things:
    You should be extremely careful handling that radio without a license (if you're licensed, I apologize in advance). And so should anyone reading this post that owns an amateur radio but does not have a license (or is considering buying one to have "in case of emergency"). Knowledge is power and I strongly encourage you study hard and get your amateur radio license. Its a wonderful experience and you'll meet some very cool people and learn a ton.
    Even WITH an amateur license that radio can be tricky because BF radios are notorious for being able to operate (transmit) outside of licensed/legal amateur radio bands. I personally don't have any Baofengs but my understanding is they can transmit just about anywhere you can turn the dial. Obviously without a license, no matter where you are on the bands, transmitting is illegal.
    The way you set the radio to transmit on an FRS frequency as a precaution to stay legal is still a slight issue. I like what you're thinking by trying to stay away from accidental, illegal HAM band transmission but you're still technically going to violate FCC law by using a device that is not certified to operate on FRS bands. Will anyone ever notice, who knows. Is it legal, not unless the device is FRS compliant and I don't think it is.
    I believe you correctly stated the Part 90 requirements weren't met by this radio and neither is Part 95.
    You do not need a license for FRS transmission (you DO for GMRS, which is very close to FRS) but you do need an FRS rated device. The little Motorola units you can get at Wal-Mart are FRS rated devices.
    FRS also has strict power rating limitations and, to my knowledge, that radio will easily exceed maximum legal FRS transmission limits. I believe FRS is limited to 500 mW (1/2 watt) MAXIMUM effective radiated power and I believe that radio you're holding boasts the ability to push 8 watts (not much in HAM, but way too much for FRS).
    GMRS/FRS falls under FCC Part 95. Next time you're incredibly bored (haha right?) google it and see how in depth it can get. While you're there, read up on Part 97 and get into 2 meters :).
    Do yourself a huge favor (and the radio community as well) and go get that license! I can tell that you're enthusiastic enough to purchase, program, and have ready on standby in case of emergency. But you will not have a good understanding on how comms really work unless you start using it.
    Hope to hear you on the radio waves some day.
    Best Regards - PAK

    One thing that I noticed that you missed off when talking about range. The use of a rats tail, a 19.5 inch counterpoise wire that is easily fitted to hang from the belt clip fixing. That can hang down from the radio out of the way. This will act as an earth for the set and give the user virtually a half-wave dipole antenna instead of a quarter wave antenna. 73 de John _ G0WXU.

    • @exgenica
      @exgenica 4 года назад

      How do you manage the dual-band nature of the antenna that comes with the radio? I notice that so far, everyone I've seen on RUclips seems to be cutting their "rat tail" to the 50cm(~19") of a quarter wavelength for the 2m band, but
      quarter wavelength for 70cm is about 17cm(~6.5") and these aren't easily factored multiples for both bands.

    I also have a BAOFENG BF-F8HP radio, and when you pointed out the type error "Protable" vs "Portable" it made me take a closer look at my label, and believe it or not it is actually spelled correctly on my BF-F8HP, which I thought was odd.
